Is there a simple way to downgrade to WM6 or WM6.1 after installing WM6.5? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I've read people saying that it is possible to downgrade back to WM6.1 or 6.0 after upgrading to WM6.5. I'm trying out some new ROMs on my Hermes, but I don't want to be stuck with a WM6.5 ROM if I decide that I don't like a ROM after I flash it...
I have HardSPL Olipro on my handset. Say for example I wanted to flash Josh's Dark Winter WM6.5 ROM (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461490). I have the OEM AT&T stripped ROM, and I have the flavour of the ROM I want to flash.
Is there an easy way to downgrade or flash back to WM6/6.1 from this point if I successfully flash the WM6.5 ROM? I've looked round xdadevs and other venues, and the only downgrade guides I can find are mrvanx's SPL guides. I'm sure somebody has written a downgrade guide but I can't for the life of me find it!

just download a WM6 or WM6.1 ROM of your choice and flash it

At the moment I'm flashing WM6.1 ROMs using the SD card method from the bootloader. Would this still be possible after flashing to WM6.5, or would I have to flash with the USB cable?

You still can use the SD Card method.

Just Flash it

You just need to flash the 6.0 or 6.1 with ANY method... its a Hermes not a PSP!

Haha - so it's really that simple? I can just take the RUU_signed.nbh from ANY WM6/6.1/6.5 release, rename it to hermimg.nbh and SD card flash it with HardSPL... and it'll always work fine, no problems?
The reason I'm being so careful is because my Hermes is my only phone, and I have no other phone for at least several months Can't afford to brick my only communications device!

Once you have HardSPLed the Hermes its virtually impossible to brick it. Also the same methodology and process that was used to flash the 6.5 ROM can be used to flash the 6.1 ROM. So do a search, download and flash to your pleasure is contented.

the fact of it being wm6/6.1 or 6.5 is just the os that is in with the rom unlike computers the whole rom is flashed so the os is removed with it.
Have Fun

Well that's cool
I was under the impression that flashing some WM6.5 ROMs did stuff to the radio stack, which then caused problems if you tried to flash back to WM6.1... As long as you've got HardSPL, is this not a problem then?

I've done it many times, just make sure you flash a stock OEM rom first, the different compressions used may cause a problem, which is taken care of by the stock rom. After doing that, as long as you have the hard spl, you shouldn't have a problem.

haha.. guess u didnt finish reading the thread on wm6.5
josh was da one who said its not possible to downgrade but at the end of the thread. he said he was jus joking. lolz
its okay that u flash 6.1 from 6.5. it makes no difference. but always flash a default rom first cos there might be problem if u flash directly from rom to rom. especailly from big storage ones

I got a bit worried after I kept on seeing people saying that it was difficult / possibly dangerous / impossible
My problem is whenever I use xda-devs, I always open 12 threads at once in different tabs - then I flick back and forth from one tab to another reading so many different things at once, sometimes I don't read everything in a thread by mistake. I guess that's served me right hasn't it!

I was wondering why the 6.5 ROM chefs were recommending that you flash the stock AT&T rom before flashing theirs... Thanks for inadvertantly answering that question for me
Thanks also to all who replied to this thread. I couldn't find a single definitive answer on how safe it was to flash between 6.1 and 6.5 (and maybe back to 6.1 again); I've had a look at the various 6.5 ROMs and they seem to be fairly similar - but do people have their own particular favourites which work well and have a decent featureset?

Can anyone tell me where i can download windows mobile 6.0 for HTC Touch 3g please as i need to downgrade if from WM 6.1. Thanks in advance

If you're having trouble installing, I recommend SSPL, but I'm NO EXPERT so do what you think's best. Mine works fine for me.
(If in doubt, I've included the easy-wrapper I've nicked from Faria's Clean ROM so you can do your own)

I've amended the link on my thread to reflect this. Sorry, should have done in the first place.
"as the SPL will be overwritten and you will be stuck with whatever ROM you flash onto your device... honestly man... do some research before posting..."
No you won't.
I should have advised people to only use SSPL if they've previously only used SSPL to make sure they don't lose their own bootloader alterations. It's a simple error mate. I've ****ed about all day trying to make this as easy as possible for people.
I know you know considerably more than me about ROMs but I've been using SSPL to flash ROMs back and forth for ages and been able to go back to official Orange WM5 every time. Nonetheless, I've put a big, bold warning on the thread.
using SSPL is ALWAYS a bad idea...it makes no difference if theyve used it before or not..
By using SSPL you overwrite ANYTHING, so if hardspl is on your device it will be overwritten...increasing the possibility of a nice permenant brick of your device if the flash fails...also the IPL will be changed.
The radio flash will be slower aswell
NEVER EVER use SSPL when flashing a ROM.
You can use SSPL when flashing a rom that contains OS only correct? Whereas this new ROM contains IPL/SPL it is not wise to use SSPL. Am I right on that?

that is still stupid... as SSPL uses an Old method of flashing... as the new 2.* codebase has improvements for error correction and you have less chance of owning a brick...

The SAFEST way to flash Official AT&T WM6

Hi!
I’ve just received my phone back from AT&T Repair Center. Sent it there because of “No GSM” problem. Guess I was experimenting with ROMs and radios too much. Anyways, now I have my 8525 with virgin WM5 installed on it and I don’t want to mess up the phone again, ‘cos my life without it was really miserable. But I really got used to WM6 (I was using Pandora 9.1 for couple months prior to breakdown). So I would like to upgrade the ROM to WM6, but do it as safe as possible. As far as I now, it is better to flash latest official AT&T WM6 ROM before flashing any modified ROM. I did check Mr.Vanx guide, but I couldn’t find the answer to my question – it guides you how to flash modded ROMs, however I couldn’t find info about how to flash original ROM.
So , could anybody quickly guide me through the process of doing it SAFELY, please?
Hard-SPL – should I do it before I do it anything else (before reflashing original AT&T WM5 with original AT&T WM6). I still do not understand what is this “Hard-SPL” , the only thing I know is that it can potentially prevent bricking bricking the phone, have no idea what exactly it does though
If I remember right, you cannot choose Hard-SPL when using Official AT&T ROM upgrade utility. Should I extract the nbh file and put it into a folder with Custom RUU Wrapper in it and run it from there?
From SD card or via ActiveSync? Which is safer? Is Hard-SPL needed if flashing with SD card?
Should I install the complete AT&T WM6 ROM or install vp3G ROM without a radio, so radio is left untouched (it is 1.40.30.00 now)
So it all comes to the question - What is the safest installation sequence?
1) WM5 -> WM6 from SD card
2) WM5 -> WM6 via ActiveSync
3) WM5 -> Hard-SPL -> Official AT&TWM6 from SD card
4) WM5 -> Hard-SPL -> Extracted nbh from official AT&T WM6 coupled with Custom RUU wrapper via ActiveSync
5) Other
Thank you!
And please, do not send me to search, I did... Just pick the number Thanks again!
i vote for 3
Are you crazy I was like u I instead got a new 8525 from Craigslist, but anyways came with WM5
and THE ABSOLUTE 1st THING I DID WAS HARDSPL : 2.10.Oli and then the ABSOLUTE best ROM for AT&T customers is vp3G's WM6 v3.62 AT&T ROM but I have an older Radio like 1.16.00.00 but I am scared to FLASH my radio to 1.54 so till I grow the balls to flash my RADIO I'm gonna STICK WITH 1.16 and vp3G's WM6 v3.62 AT&T ROM like he says "AT&T WM6 sweetness without all of the suckiness"
if you are simply wanting to use stock at&t wm6 just us activesync and open up your update package. you can then use hard spl if you wish to falsh a custom rom

I agree wholeheartedly with this advice. HardSPL is a great utility, but if you have your mind set on the stock AT&T ROM (I've been using it for months, and it's not that bad), then simply use the one that's legit, and don't mess with anything else. This way, if something DOES go wrong, it should still be fully covered under warranty.

You're actually fine with flashing hardspl (for xda rom cooked upgrades) and flashing back to stock ATT rom if you're sending your phone back for a replacement. I've done it twice within my 1yr warranty coverage.
I never had any issues with ATT receiving my broken phone and telling me they would not honor the warranty. I received my replacement phone and I'm fine.

Thanks for replies guys!
So HardSPL is not necessary if I want to flash AT&T ROM on AT&T phone? It can provide some additional safety only when flashing custom ROM? Is vp3G's WM6 v3.62 AT&T ROM considered to be "Official" or "Custom" from the HardSPL point of view ("Derived from AT&T Final WM6 ROM (3.62.502.3)")? I have to admit that I am a little afraid to mess with the radio. As of now, I am leaning towards flashing vp3G ROM (OS only) from SD card without HardSPL.
P.S. My phone is not under warranty anymore. So when I came to AT&T store asking if my phone can be fixed (No GSM), they offered me to buy a new phone
All you have to do is plug into activesync and flash it.
It doesn't matter because the WM6 AT&T official rom doesn't need to be hardspl or anything

If you decide to go with vp3g, you should definitely flash HardSPL first. That is NOT an official ROM. Don't get careless, now. Warranty or not, you don't want a brick.

First time installing what do ya think?

Like the title says this is my virgin flash. So what do you guys think should be my first ROM? I've looked at a bunch.
Looking for stability and style.
Just to get this correct I need to unlock my phone even though it's att and I'm using att. (Should I just unlock the CID or both)
Then I need to install HardSPL 7.1?
Then flash the ROM I choose.
Then load APPS as needed?
Thanks for the help!
Hardspl v7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
I would unlock and supercid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665 then I ran hardspl again just to make sure, because unlocking changes the bootloader.
Then you should be good to go. Hardspl will help you in case you get a bad flash or bad rom, it's easier to recover. Supercid will allow to flash unsigned code (custom roms).
Looks like your on the right track, I'm just not sure where you got v7.1 for hardspl? That's why I included the links.
Also, "any rom you choose", but only from the Hermes forum. Flash a rom for another device means instant brick and you may not be able to recover it.
Hard SPL is a safety net only, there are NO guarantees you won't end up with a permanent brick, Hard SPL or no...
Most times you have to do something REALLY dumb to end up with a total brick but there is a miniscule chance, especially if you are playing around with the radio rom.
Happy flashing...
It was late last night and I couldn't remember if it was 7 or 7.1 lol. I'm charging the phone now. Gonna make sure it's nice and full then I'm gonna give it a shot. Thanks to you both for the help. I just needed to hear I was going about this the right way. I think I'll try one of Schaps ROM's first then try one of Josh's and see what I like about each. I've only got about 50 pages in on each so I'll read alittle more while the phone is charging. Thanks again!!
Oh wanted to ask also is there a Page or sticky just for Apps, skins, themes, and such or do I need to know what I'm looking for and search it?
Dang I thought my other phone had a microSD card in it.....turns out it's M2. Guess I'll stop on the way to work to pick one up. Non SDHC 2gb or less! Another question when it states now copy this to your phone....What file do I copy it to? (I'll head back to the Wiki and see if I can find that myself but figured I'd ask).
copy the RUU_signed.nbh and rename it hermimg.nbh the exe file is the flashing utility, and you don't need it if your flashing via the sd card.
make sure the card is formatted as fat32 (not fat).
Ok I did it the RUU way without the SD card. I'm now at 2.10.01 so I'm good. Now off to work and will hit the unlocker next. Thanks for the help!!
Ok unlock has been completed now I'm going to run Hardspl again. What about the radio I see that is has changed. Should I change that back to what it was at some point?
Ok I've done my first ROM flash wow! I grabbed Schap's WM6 Pro 4.31. I'll try it out and see if I like it. If not try another. Thanks again for helping me thru!
If you wish to risk changing the radio, do so but only if theres a problem. If the radio rom flash is interrupted, you will almost certainly have a brick on your hands.
Use the sd card method to flash so you then minimize the amount of problems you may have.
Remember though, if the radio rom is working fine, don't touch it....
Cheers...

Ah, cool! Thanks, vp3G! I guess I took all the info wrong. Reading the 2 threads it wasn't clear. I guess my method worked though! haha
Yea, it's all quite confusing... Hard-SPL ended up negating the need to use pof's unlocker. Olipro is a friggin' genius (as is pof).
So all I needed to do was Hardspl and I would have been good to go? I have another hermes I'm doing for myself. I do find I'm not getting very little service if not none at all in the house. I use to get 3 or 4 bars. Should I change the radio? Does the radio change with each ROM loaded?
You can try going back to the radio that you originally had, just do it the sd method to minimize the chance of something going wrong.
You could compare the difference between the 2 hermes.

True, but if you wish to sim unlock then you still need Pof's unlocker.
I have to admit I'm getting there myself LOL. It really isn't that hard after you do it the first time. Some things I got stuck on (Pure newbness).
Some ROMs are compressed with .rar and .7.....I found you must download a unzipper/compressor to extract the files you need. I used Winrar some use 7zip. I'm getting there. There is soooo much info on this site. You find that you search for an answer and you get a page of answers with 3 different ways to do it LOL!
We have all been there at one point, too!
When I first brought my hermes home and it was still locked to the at&t network, I was so worried I was going to break it.
Lots of reading, and lots of tinkering later, and I am working on my own rom. Granted, I didn't port it, but I have done so much tweaking that I don't think anyone could tell where it came from.
Funny thing is, I still keep learning so much more. I think it's like my other hobby, ham radio, I don't think anyone can try everything! It seems to go on and on.
Ya know you gotta love the internet LOL. I've learned about so many things (mostly due to them breaking lol). Here's another question for you guys. For those who have Josh's 6.1 ROM. Where is the lock unlock button??? I see the lock device setup for password protection but I don't see a regular lock the screen so I don't make but calls button. LOL I'm gonna try to load his S2U2 thing when I figure out how to do it.
You can add device lock to the today screen under settings>today (at least it should be there), but if your using manilla I don't have a clue lol

Upgrading/flashing my TyTN

Hi there
So, i've been reading a lot about flashing and upgrading with roms. I want to upgrade my 6.0 to 6.5 but i'm scared that if something goes wrong my device will be ruined. Is there any way to recover a scrambled flash ?
Thanks a lot
if you read the wiki for the hermes you will see the ways to hopefully stop your phone becoming a brick, such as hard-spl and using the sd card method can also help, if youve get any more questions after reading the wiki pages just ask.
Have fun
Here you go: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeForBeginners
By the way, it is more risky to flash the radio part of the rom. This is where you really can brick your pda. Basically there is no need to flash the radio module as long as your hermes is "phoning" correctly.
All 6.1 and 6.5 proposed by our chefs are "radio free". If, as explained in the above link, you have installed HARDSPL, and if you use the SD card flashing method, you will be quite safe. (I did it... i do not remember how many times...and my hermes is still fine)
Just one think. Some roms are using a special trick to enlarge the capacity remaining for your applications. This is greath. But it mixes up a bit the structure of the memory of the hermes. Basically no problem with that as it is not permanent. But if you want to flash a new rom after this one, you will need to flash first an official rom (like the ATT stripped one - means: without the radio part - flying on this forum) This is intended to restructure the memory scheme and avoid strange behaviours like automatic hard resets, etc...
For example, look for a rom from Tai. There is a link to the ATT rom on his thread.
Good luck and... welcome to the flashing addict community
It is good practice to flash such a rom

Going to try anyway

Well since no one seems to know. I have the HTC banded Excalibur with the Dodpod 6.1 WM rom. The Dopod WM5 rom doesn't exist anymore. I am going to flash it with the T-mobile WM5 rom on this site. There is no better ROM, that will depend on your personal needs, but believe me there are great ROM´s even better than the "official" ones...
Good luck,
Thanks and apreciate the response. But it has more to do with my first post of not being able to sync with PC. I was told that I need to revert the rom to the original. I had issues syncing with my PC with WM 6.1. You can flash the original rom ( I used the original T-mobile rom) using the bootloader. With your phone off, hold the camera button and plug in ur USB then hit power button. the Tricolored bootloader screen should appear. You can flash your phone to the original rom from there. Once your phone is flashed, you might wanna think about flashing a WM 6.5 rom since the syncing problem is pretty much not an issue.
P.S. all of this can be found by reading through the threads.
