Genuine HTC Touch??? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Where to begin? I purchased what I thought was a real HTC Touch(GSM), only to have received what I think maybe a Chinese clone or Chinese version of said phone. The phone itself is tagged HTC even in the battery compartment. The phone doesn't say DOPOD (Taiwanese subsidiary) anywhere on it but I have my suspicions. Aside from the roms and badges, is there any difference ,hardware wise? I know the Chinese versions can't utilize a 3G network. Is this issue Hardware or Firmware? If it's a DOPOD, will it take a U.S rom once I unlock the CID? Can I save the old ROM (just in case)? Are you tired of me asking questions yet? With the info bellow can it be determined if I was scammed?
ROM 1.11.706.1b CHS
model ELF0100
model# HTC P3450
p/n 99HDM030-00
I picked a bad week to stop drinking tequila.
I had enough of this, I,m going to drown my sorrows. I'll check back in the morning.

Appears to be a regular Elf model Touch?

It appears to be, but looks can be deceiving. Also there are tell-tale signs,( spelling and grammatical errors in the UI, missing features, etc.).What I really need to know is if it is, are there any physical hardware differences between a US model and an Asian Knock-off? I went to the US HTC website to check for updates and I found a rom update. After inputting my ser. number for the download, it replied that it was not a legitimate serial number. IF it is a Chinese version can I convert it to a US model? will I have 3G accessibility? Inquiring minds want to know.

Unfortunately, that I cannot answer--although if it is a knock-off, and therefore of no use--might as well try, right?

Well, yeah, I can try, but I can also end up bricking my phone if they're not the same. Can't I?

US 3G Data?

So I'm looking around for a Rhodium to pick up, and find out that (at least that I've found) don't have the 3G network data for the US... just every other country >_>.
I *really* want this phone. I have a tilt and this is the next logical step. However, the ATT version has a crap keyboard, so I want the original model. So my question is: Is it possible to manually update the 3g network data for US usage? It's kind of pointless to spend over 600 bucks on a phone that I can't use to it's full potential.
Second, anyone know where I can pick one up less than 600 bucks?
usually it has to do more with hardware rather than software, so you're out of luck. Less than 600, more likely it will be a used one off of here or ebay.

No it´s not possible
I understand your concern, on my case is the same or buy the beautyful european version without american 3g or wait till some american carrier bring it and with the diferences like keyboard, color, etc...
I am just about to decide to buy the europe version, just will wait till July 22nd as that date aperently att&t will have it on sale.
As for the price, if you want to buy an european version there are plenty sites with good prices like clove uk
Let´s see what happens?

from what has been posted on this forum, the at&t version does not have a crap keyboard. your probably talking about that picture that shows a red one with a jacked up keyboard. That is NOT the at&t version. Somebody here on this forum saw an at&t version in person and said that it has the same exact keyboard layout as the unlocked version.

I think it's T-Mobile that'll have it on July 22nd, with their T-Mobile weird/specific 3G bands, not AT&T. I'm still anxiously waiting for AT&T to announce the release date...
^yep, the July 22nd date is for Tmob...hopefully it won't be pushed back!

Orly? Yeah, I was talking about the one with the red keyboard (the red was cool, the 10-key was not >_>). If that isn't the ATT model, then what IS it and why is that picture out there?
If the att version is standard keyboard, then I'm all about getting one from att with (hopefully) US 3g.
Thanks for all the replies!
That was a mock-up picture. If you look at the slide it says 5-Row QWERTY but the picture of the phone shows a 4-row QWERTZ. I also doubt they would keep that hideous red color.

My ebay purchase, thats going back.

Hey folks,
I just made an ebay purchase for an A8183.
I recieved it today and the box barcode and labeling match the imei and model number, but under the status setting it says A8181. The back says next g and telstra plus the box matched the sellers description.
The seller is allowing me to return it. So everyone planning to scoop one up, make sure the seller sends you a picture of the status page under settings, and it says a8183.
peace
My Desire is A8181 as well. What's the difference?
Frequency for hsdpa/umts. a8183 is for att in the usa.
it's possible that the seller flashed an A8181 ROM. if you haven't done so already, did you test to confirm you could/could not use at&t 3G? what is the model number under the battery? A8181 or A8183? i mention this because if i used a UK ROM cook's European ROM on my Telstra Touch HD, it would show a UK ROM number. it didn't matter tho, i could still connect to at&t 3G. oh yeah, my HTC Telstra HTC Desire also says A8181, but i can connect to at&t 3G without a problem. the seller flashed a UK ROM on the device.
I got a feeling your right, because everything matches under the battery. It says a8183, but the status page under settings shows a8181.
The build number as I investigate show test keys in their tag.
What radio are you using? Its the baseband I believe.
Any suggestions?
Yeah I am using the nextG branded and I got it from the telstra shop, so it is legit, but I just checked mine and it says 8181, though mine has been rooted, did its have any of the telstra cooked in crap or not? if not then I would say it was actually legit.

Presumably you are using this on AT&T in the US. If so, if you can get a 3G connection, it's an A8183 and you are good to go.
Regards,
Dave
Definitely AT&T, the lack of 3g is what tipped me off. But there was no telstra software apps, just branding and packaging.
Also the baseband was not the same as the Telstra specs, and the rom version was not found anywhere within xda or google. I think the kernel version ended with the word test keys. 1.21 and
But I got my refund and reordered an unopened today from A GA company.
Is it possible that the radio or rom was to blame for the lack of 3g. I think it can from my should I say lack of experience porting android over windows.
Caint wait... I have been having withdrawal syptoms since I did the return. Suddenly my free backflip is awkward and dull.
peace,

Original ROM or Telstra Serial Number?

Could somebody please provide me with the original Telstra Rom from AUS for the Touch Diamond or tell me a serial number for a Telstra Diamond, as I bought mine from eBay and it isn't Telstra original
I guess no one might provide you a serial number! But you can do a little search on google or on xda and I'm sure you'll find it
Personally, I don't own a Telstra Diamond! Sorry
why would you want a telstra ROM? much better to just get one of the custom ROMs from this forum - you'll find they're faster and more feature packed (and work fine with the telstra network).
however if you really want it, you can get it HERE

[Q] Hardware Differences Between Versions of HDH

I am going to buy a Desire HD in the next day or two in Beijing. Some of the sellers are saying things like 'I have the xx version so its a bit more expensive' and according to my research I've found that there may be:
Taiwan version
Mainland Version
Hongkong Version
European Version
Asia Pacific Version
So my question is... Does it make any difference. Ive heard claims of difference is signal quality which would mean different radio hardware of some kind.
The other claim I've heard is that there are quality control differences between market versions.
Anyone got anything real on this?
There are only 2 versions of the DHD. One is the version of Telus, and the normal version that any1 else has. The telus version has some problems with sound on some custom roms, but there are fixes for it.
However, there are some differences between the normal dhds also. There are 2 different screens (sharp and au optronics) and 2 types of touch panels (synaptics and atmel). The only difference is that sharps screen is slightly better, but you nearly wouldn't notice the difference between those two displays.
You can flash any custom rom on the normal dhd, doesn't matter which display and touchpanel you have
maybe there are some differences with the signal quality, but this is related to the software and not to the hardware.
Normally all versions should have the same good (or bad) quality. A friend of mine bought his DHD at the same store where I bought mine, his has a blurry camera and a bad sim cover

I talked to a few sellers on taobao and the line they are all using is that you won't be able to get OTA updates if you have the european version and you live here in Asia. I told him that wasn't an issue for me and I bought a european version because they were selling it a few hundred RMB cheaper.
In the end I think its nothing more than a way to increase profit because based on the keyboard languages available I have an asia pacific version..
as i'm just a little far from China, i can't give you specific advice, but you should read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902385
it sounded a little scary to me, but to make a long story short, except for Telus all DHD are virtually the same, with no hardware differences, i bought mine from singapore and it is exactly like my friend's one that was bought from UK.
you can consider Inspire 4G a DHD too, but it's other story! ehehehe

HTC 10 in Japan, ok for root?

I am living in Japan and I definitely want to buy the new HTC 10.
I am concerned thus that I could have problem to root it or unlock the bootloader since it's my first time to buy a phone here in Japan, not sure if that could be a problem.
I was considering to ask my friend to send it to me from UK, to have a European version.
What do you guys think? Would it be fine if I buy it here then root it as I always did?
Thanks in advance!
In Japan, too, and will be snapping this baby up hopefully when Au releases it in June (my guess, based on past summer releases and what I have seen on HTCsoku). I've had no issues unlocking and getting s-off on HTC phones (Desire then the M7, my current phone) here in the past, so I don't see why we'd have any issues this time. Hopefully, we'll get some joy from Sunshine soon enough and can find out for sure.

Thanks for your help!
I was a bit concerned as I own a UK M8 now with a BiCSim provider sim card, but it seems like I cannot get a 4G signal, as I don't have band 1 unlocked on this phone.
For this reason I was a bit worried, you never know...
Just out of curiosity, what kind of ROMs are u flashing on your HTC? I mean, is there a thread specifically made for Japanese phones/ROMs?
Thanks again!
No probs. It's early days yet for everyone, things being tested, guides being made, so keep an eye on the forum. Very few people even have the phone at this point, and we are still at least a month away from Japan release. Be patient, grasshopper.
I have TWRP and still have stock on my old M7. Was easy-peasy. As far as Japan-specific phones go, in the past they have basically just been one or two sub-threads within the particular phone's forum. There are a few XDA folk based in Japan, but not so many HTC users - who knows, I haven't fiddled with my phone for almost two years, so there may be more these days). Best idea is to keep an eye out here and on local HTC fansites (like HTCsoku, as I mentioned - you might need Japanese ability to get the most out of them, mind you).

HTC in Japan
Also living in Japan. I have the HTC One rooted with Android Revolution HD 92.0 installed. I have a Rakuten Mobile sim card and LTE works fine (when available which is not at many places).
I am also planning on buying the HTC 10. I haven't yet found the detailed differences between the different versions but the Asian version may be preferable to the European version (at least that's what I decided for the HTC One).

True, I checked also on the amazon UK website and its definitely cheaper, around 85.000 yen, about 550£.
I still have a 50£ voucher on Amazon UK, still thinking to buy it there and ask my friend to send it to me, I guess even with the delivery will be much cheaper.

This is the only thing I am worried infact, because my M8 currently doesn't work with LTE here, but is basically a 2 years old phone, at that time 4G was still kind of new.
For a while I will keep looking..
I should have looked better: there are apparently only two versions available, US and EMEA (see here: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_10-7884.php).
For Japan, the bands available are not that great.
Docomo is mostly on bands 1, 3 and 19.
AU on bands 1, 11 and 18.
Softbank on bands 1, 3 and 8.
The HTC 10 EMEA version is on bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40 and 41.
The US version is on bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, 28, 29 and 30.
If you are on AU, you have only one band available whatever the HTC 10 version chosen.
If you are on Softbank, the EMEA version has all three bands covered.
With Docomo, either versions are possible (only two bands covered)
This was my main concern, if the HTC 10 EMEA would cover the LTE signal or not, hope it will work with my BiC SiM card, I am using Docomo carrier.
I am wondering if 2 bands are enough for a decent LTE signal thus, but if we really will have only 2 HTC 10 version, it should work..

So... anyone in Japan purchased and rooted the HTC 10 (HTV32) yet? Just about ready to make the visit to the AU store and say sayonara to my M7. I have been looking for experiences on unlocking and rooting on Japanese sites... can't see anyone having done it as yet. I am guessing jcase's method (sticky on the HTC10 forum) will work with this one just as well, but always nice to see others do these things on the exact same version of device prior to diving in yourself (well, for relative noobs like myself, it is less nerve-wracking!)

I bought my HTC 10 from Amazon and I noticed that it has been delivered from Taipei, of course Asia firmware.
No problem here working flawlessly, S-OFF, unlocked bootloader, Lee Droid ROM, ElementalX Kernel.

Awesome - used the method I mentioned? (jcase) I assume it was already unlocked. Which carrier you using, btw? Amazon: might look into that.
Actually I don't even know what is "Jcase" method.
I always follow xda's guide.
I don't have a contract by the way, just using iijimio monthly sim card plan.
Edit: Sorry I forgot to tell you that the HTC 10 I bought is not the Japanese version you mentioned, here:

With US models, TouchPal is installed and that does not have a Japanese option.
