HELP! VZW-TP2 - Problems with Exchange activesync and attachments??? [+VIDEO] - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I am having the most bizarre problem with a brand new out of the box Verizon TP2, with trying to sync Exchange 2007 email w/ attachments. I have had the same email account on the same Exchange server for a couple of years, and this account worked fine with VZW TP1 and the Samsung i760 before it.
I have installed nothing on the TP2, in fact all I've done is go through the HTC setup wizard. I chose not to setup Exchange using the HTC wizard and instead opted for going to Activesync and going to Add Server Source like normal.
I added email, checked the box for download attachments, and the one below it to download only 250KB and under.
What happens is while syncing, all the email comes through ok, but then when it gets to attachments, a lot of the time it tries to display the attachment in another window.. a lot of the time this results in a blank window with a bunch of garbled text that I press OK on and then it moves to the next attachment. It will NOT continue the sync process until I press OK. Usually within the next attachment or two I get the window yet again and have to press OK. I have hundreds of attachments.. so you can imagine this gets quite annoying.
I have tried hard resetting a couple of times and I get identical results. So my choices are to not be able to receive attachments, or to not be able to have my email up to date, not to mention the time and annoyance of pressing OK through most of the attachments.
I took an AVI video of what it's doing with MyMobiler because I know this is hard to articulate in words.. The video is after all the emails have downloaded and the attachments are being sync'd. About 30-40 seconds in, on attachment 93/213 you see a screen full of gibberish that is part of an attachment.. I have to press OK.. then on attachment 94/213 it does the same thing.. I paused for a bit here to show you it will not continue until you press OK.
I called Verizon, they had no clue and pointed to HTC. HTC Support had no clue and has escalated it to Tier 2. *sigh*
Anyone else seeing this?
EDIT: XDA is not letting me attach files, keeps saying upload failed. Therefore, please get the video here: http://www.MegaShare.com/1457504

Are you syncing over the data connection or cabled to your pc? I'm a little confused why your ActiveSync window lists the Precision 390.
I've been syncing over a data connection with direct push without issue.
In the weird error message that pops up, the IP is 192.168.something. That's a non-routable IP address (your PC???). If you are cabled to the PC, maybe it's an issue with the PC if the IP in the error message matches the PC's IP. (I suppose it could be your phone's IP if you are connected to the net via WiFi.

I am syncing over the air to the exchange server at my work. I also have Activesync setup for my workstation (though nothing syncs directly from the computer).
The message that pops up is an attachment in an email message.. in this case a license from one of our vendors. That's the weird part. Instead of just downloading the attachments in the background, it is trying to display them. The IP address you see on the screen is inconsequential here.. I wish I could have shown other instances of what I'm talking about but some of the attachments have company or personal information.

Timeout-Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device

I have a couple of POP3 accounts on my O2 XDAIIs. I used to be able to download my email from ISP without problems.
Lately, when there is any email waiting, it will connect and try to download and pop up the following message "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again."
The other POP3 accounts work fine, even with the same ISP, and this POP3 account used to work when I first got the unit. The POP3 account in question works fine from my Treo using the same SIM card (I have Cingular).
I searched all over the web and forums, I see many have the problem and some have not been able to resolve it. I tried:
1) Soft and Hard Reset
2) Deleting and reentering the account
3) Used the Sprite Mail cleanup utility (which basically cleans all emails and attachments)
4) Tried a registry key that had worked for some: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox, create new DWORD ForceOffSSL and give it a value of 1.
5) Checked with my ISP – they could not see any problem with the account and works with anything else but my O2 XDA IIs.
6) I tried the Flemail 2006 program (formerly WebIS) and it worled for email. But the program is so buggy and slow that I had to delete it. This tells me the problem is with the native pocket outlook.
If there is NO email, it will connect, check and disconnect with no error.
There is a timeout somewhere. The other accounts can connect and download without problems.
Has anybody else had this problem and does anybody have any suggestions?
No one else has had this problem? Any suggestions?
I know it is device specific as it works on the same GSM account on a Treo.
PPC6700 with same problem
I just purchased the PPC 6700 and I love the device itself, but I have had many problems with it after owning it for only 4 days.
1. Sprint failed to let me know that my phone had to be updated. Thanks! I only found out about this update after 1 hour of phone tech support trying to find out why my phone randomly went into flight mode. What a pain in the ***.
2. I have my own servers and cannot download my mail from them or my home isp. Sprint by the way repeatedly told me this must be an issue with you server. I told him after being on the phone for 3 hours (I could tell he wasn't happy) "You must be right! Microsoft has always developed software much more then anything ever put out in the Unix world".
So the only help I guess I can offer to you is "Yes, I have the same problem with the native outlook that comes with WM5.0

Whenever I see this (and I see it a alot) on mt XDA IIs, I just select Accounts|Clear <account>
If it doesnt work immediately then I restart the Outlook Inbox app and/or disconnect/reconnect.
Been through searching registry/deleting this & that database file / re/installing accounts. Havent had to do that for ages.
I access 5-6 pop accounts from various servers, several are my wife's. My bet is that it has something to do with whether the current status of the emails downloaded in your device matches the server etc - due to the function that you can delete the emails from the server by downloading, deleting and then deleting from the 'deleted items' folder and re-sycning
HTH
ME TOO! Any resolution??
I am having the SAME EXACT PROBLEM with my new 6700...did you ever find a resolution?
THanks,
I am having the same problem on a Hermes / TyTN.
My first TyTN was fine. I have 3 email accounts. 1 uses SSL and the other 2 don't. There were no problems using either account.
Having replaced my 1st TyTN with a new one (due to poor wifi on first device) I now get the message 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again'.
The only solution is to use the ForceOffSSL setting for my 2 none-SSL POP3 accounts. Then I have to reboot the TyTN without the ForceOffSSL settings to use my SSL POP3 account.
Continually changing the ForceOffSSL setting and rebooting is annoying, so for the time being I'm using nPOP email client for my non-SSL accounts.
getting an email timed out on cingular 8525
I am getting the same message 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again'. I am having the same problem intermittently with Htc Tytn with a pop account yahoo. I seem to connect without a problem on the internet but i do get this error intermittently. any solution?
Same here ... cannot send mail via OptOnline Account
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK...I got a resolution to this last night on the Cingular forum.
Quick answer is that OOL's SMTP Server is locked down. I needed to change the outgoing server to Cingular's (CWMX.com).
Thanks to anyone who took the time to click-in on this thread.
Happy New Year, all!

===================
Hi all, OK, this marks my first post on this board. I've been a lurker for a few months, and have settled into a Cingular 8525 as my first Pocket PC Phone.
I noticed a few days ago that I could not send mail via my OptOnline Account, unless I was using WiFi or the 8525 was tethered to my home PC via ActiveSync. I was thnking all along that it was probably due to some piece of third party software that I installed over the past few weeks (a hearty thanks to all on these forums who develop and/or market their wonderful wares, btw).
But today, for a lack of anything else to do, I hard reset and tried simply setting up that one account to try my machine out in its pure form. Lo and behold, I still get the same error, 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again.'
As a matter of fact, it seems this message itself is in error, since it happens when I try to SEND a message, not when I try to receive them. I have even received emails in this account at the same time this error message appears, but at any rate, messages in my outbox do not get sent.
As far as I can tell, all the settings are correct. I have played with them, and tried all the permutations I can think of, but this baby will not send mail via this account. My XpressMail and Hotmail accounts work fine, both sending and receiving, and I can browse the web fine via My ISP or WiFi.
I have spent a lot of time searching the web for an answer to this problem, but it seems it's been quite prevalent with WM5.0 devices for well over a year, and still does not have an answer.
So ... my first post ... which should have been a thank you all, and Happy New Year, has turned into a request for the talents of you folk who know so much more than I regarding these devices.
Can anyone please lend a hand? Also ... is it "legal" to cross-post this message onto other forums on this board?
Thanks so much to anyone who can provide a solution.
-Paul Slabowski (a.k.a. pvs)
I got it working
Like others in this thread I was getting the "unable to download messages to device" error when sending. My solution is:
Try leaving the 'domain' field blank.
It's on the Server Information page, and also on the Outgoing Settings if you 'Use separate settings' for your outgoing server.
Hope this helps you.

Domian Blank
My Domain is blank and frankly im just getting very agrivated by this. Does anybody eles have other advice to give towards this "cannot download message"?
I've got WM6, I've tried clearing and deleting the account, soft resetting the phone, making sure the domain field is empty, etc. It still gives this error for my POP account while my IMAP account is fine. Anyone find a solution?
Yes, deleting the domain really works in some cases (f.e. Gmail), but the same error occurs in my other account although I delete the domain. And funny thing is that it occurs only when there are some emails in outbox, receiving emails seems to work normnally :S
I'm still encountering this problem after trying everything on this post...
any other ideas?
Just had the same problem tonight. My mail server recently changed IP addresses, so I suspect DNS issues were the cause of my problem. I tried using the new IP address in place of the host name, but that didn't work for me. The account settings didn't seem fixable. Deleting the email account entirely and adding it back did the trick.

E-mail and USB

Well, I am sure that some people out there might have a similar issue with their device. I have finally been able to setup my e-mail accounts to work properly. I have it turned on to connect to "The Internet" (Wi-Fi on the Dash) every 15 minutes to check for new email. However, when I have the Wi-Fi feature turned off, it won't do it; which is what I want it to do. But when I have it connected to the laptop via USB to charge, it checks for the e-mail. This is pointless as I am already receiving the e-mails on my laptop.
Is there a way that I can have it not use the USB to check for e-mails? I heard in another forum that I can set ActiveSync to "Work" which might resolve the problem. Anyone know how I can do that?
Finally, if that doesn't work, what e-mail applications do you guys recommend? I have my Outlook on my laptop setup so that I receive e-mails from both my account into a single Inbox and I have the option of choosing what account I want to send from. Something like that for the Q/Dash would be very useful.
Oh, and one more thing. Is there a way to have the Q/Dash delete the messages from the server when deleting from the handheld? I would like to be able to filter my messages when receiving them on the handheld so that I don't have to re-read them on my laptop when I get home. If there isn't a setting for it, is there a program that offers this option?
Thanks in advance...
Deleting messages from server
I'm assuming you're using POP and not IMAP to check your messages on your Dash. If so, this is what I do to delete messages on the server:
1. Download messages onto Dash (of course)
2. Delete messages on Dash
3. Empty the Deleted Items folder on Dash
4. Send/Receive messages.
This has the effect of removing the deleted messages from the server. Of course, you must also delete them on the Dash -- so I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for. Another option is to use IMAP...but my email server doesn't support it so I'm using POP.
Hope that helps!
Manzil
Move to Microsoft Exchange you will get Direct Push to your device and will not have to worry ever about e-mail synchronization issues
How would I move to Microsoft Exchange? Can you be a little more specific?
If your school or office doesn't offer it, this is for personal use -- you'll need a hosted Exchange service. There are a lot out there, google 'hosted exchange', or, take a look at the best, http://4smartphone.net

Anyone know how to change ActiveSync to "Work" instead of "The Internet"?
Change the sync directories.
Can you explain how. I'm really ignorant when it comes to these things.
Don't remember exactly, I found it in the help files, or the manual -- one or the other -- take a look.

If you want a free hosted exchange service that does push email and 1 Gb of storage will suffice, you could also try Mail2Web:
https://services.mail2web.com/signup/mail2weblive/mail2webLive_01.asp
Looks good -- just curious though, I noticed the free version is for use with the @mail2web email address format -- can you pay and use your own domain name. That's how 4smartphone.net works, but I couldn't find info on it at the mail2web site.

- not sure, but not a bad trade-off for free, right ?
Call me part of the ingnorant bunch too, but how can I configure POP on my DASH?
I connect through Wifi all the time. When I got to configure "Email Setup" and put my info in, is says contacting server please wait and nothing happens. It tries for a few minutes and then craps out and say it could not connect? But I can browse the web, can view my mail though my web mail accounts and can view my Yahoo account.
Please some advise on this.
you are part of the ignoran bunch! ;P

WM6 Exchange EMail help

I am currently using WM6 and am trying to get EMail through our Exchange server setup; however, my Dash s620 will not properly save the server's address.
The address for our OWA is (ex) mail.email.com:8888/exchange
and this address works fine in Internet Explorer etc, but when I enter this into the phone it removes the /exchange and only saves up to :8888, which then gives me "Error synchronizing" when trying to connect. Our Exchange server does have Exchange ActiveSync enabled along with Direct Push enabled.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
I think that you have to check your ActiveSync settings on Exchange. I know that Microsoft have a lot of KB's about that.
It does the same thing on mine, erases exchange, but mine is cool. Are you sure you are putting in the Domain?

Yeah I've tried every which way I could think of for the login credentials.
I'll sift through some more MS articles tomorrow afternoon, see if I can't find anything... baffled though, really.
K this is going to be a huge PITA I can tell.
I adjusted the Virtual Directory for the default web site in Exchange System manager to point directly to /exchange, eliminating the need for anything after the :8888. It works fine in IE etc, quickly brings up a login prompt. Using the phone's IE and going to the http://mail.email.com:8888 works fine, prompts a login accordingly...
I configured a coworkers Blackberry to use our OWA and it works fine, but I'm not sure if it uses Push Email (Exchange ActiveSync).
What is it about the Dash that won't mesh? The server is not using SSL so I couldn't see it being a certificate issue (maybe it still is?). Is there anyone around who manages an Exchange Server and could perhaps shed some light on common settings that need to be adjusted for Exchange ActiveSync?
Such a nuisance
ActiveSync on the phone reports "The server could not be reached. Please verify the server name." Support code: 0x80072EE7
It reports back with this no matter how I enter the address (which again, works fine in IE). Devil phone
8888 is definetly not standard for publishing ActiveSync.
the software will connect to either MailServer:80 if the SSL checkbox is cleared or MailServer:443 if the checkbox is checked.
don't think you'll get ActiveSync connect to something else.
Why don't you change your port back to 80?
you are already exposing your server to internet without any form of protection (no SSL so your password can be sniffed over the network) and having port 8888 buys you nothing in terms of security since any port scanner will report the port as opened and eventually get the HTTP banner from the IIS Server.
So, get back to a standard config and you'll love your DASH again.

IMAP email inconsistencies

My ISP's mail server is an IMAP server. I have entered all of the info correctly and I am usually able to connect and receive and send email without issue. However I am seeing a few consistencies:
1) Occasionally it won't be able to send and/ or receive email. I do get an error about network coverage, settings, etc. but I have changed nothing from the last time I used it. Often, shutting down the phone and removing the battery for ten minutes will resolve the issue. Sometimes, it seems that it works thru WiFi but not through T-MO phone service, other times it's exactly reversed (maybe switching between the two is the problem?). It seems that I D/L'd a patch or found some system setting change for this problem on XDA-dev for my old silverface Dash (I now have a Dash 3G), but I can't find it anymore despite two hours spent searching the forums.
2) None of my self-created subfolders on the IMAP server are D/L'd to my Dash. Additionally, email deletes are not transferred either direction. Email deleted on the phone stays on the server and vice-versa. (Yes, of course I checked the "Remove from server " check-box)
Any help is appreciated!

[Q] Why does my mail app mark emails as read on server when checking?

I'm not sure if this is a HTC Wildifre S or an Android Gingerbread related issue and looking through the web I did'n find any solution (to be fair I didn't find other people having the same issue), but this is my problem:
I configured my HTC built-in email app in order to check my email account. I set the incoming mail protocol as POP3. Now, every time my email account gets checked on my phone, nearly all (but strangely NOT ALL) the downloaded emails are authomatically marked as read on the server, so if I look afterwards at my emails on the webmail or on my pc (Thunderbird set wit IMAP protocol) they look to be read, even though I never opened them! Only on my phone unread emails are correctly marked as unread, as the marking seems to happen after the downloading process and thus doesn't affect the already downloaded emails.
This is of course a problem, as I risk to miss unread emails that don't appear to be unread on my pc even though they actually ARE unread.
Did anybody experience the same issue?
Any suggestion?
Thank you
I just discovered your question with no answers last night when scrolling through on my phone before falling asleep so:
This primarily has to do with the difference between web email and client email. Keep in mind that, as always, terms can mean different things depending on the content in which they are used. So web mail, typically uses IMAP as it's protocol and you can read mail on the email server from a variety of devices. When a device (computer, tablet, phone) reads it, the mail is marked as read on the server and when any other device checks for mail it will find it as read. An email client typically uses POP (although some can use IMAP also) and will download mail to the client and delete it from the server; however, often the option to leave it on the server can be selected, but it might still be marked as read because it is also downloaded.
A good example would be the aol desktop program that one would install on their computer, going back to dial-up. You could set it to dial in at intervals and download new mail to the desktop, then disconnect from the aol server. If you read that same mail downloaded to another computer that also had the aol desktop program installed, the first computer would still show it unread and the second would show you read it.
It's kind of the same with current, always connected devices, and to add a layer of confusion (or mystery?) consider how you have the program, on a particular device you're using, set to check mail. If it checks and says you have mail, but you don't check it on that first device but read it on a second device it will still show unread on the first device until it checks the server, for example every hour or whatever time interval you have set. If you have it set to check every hour AND on opening then you might see it flash unread and then show read on that first device (having read it on the second device). Throw in something like your phone's email program checking mutliple sources, aol, gmail, etc. against the above scenarios and it can be hard to keep it all straight...oh yeah, throw in Thunderbird on the same device and...good luck
Thank you MiCeltic. It's probably as you say. Still, I already used to check my emails with different web clients on different devices, some set with POP and some with IMAP protocol, and it never happened to me that a POP-using web client marks all emails as "read" on the server simply by checking them. But the default email client on my android phone probably brehaves like this, as you say. My solution was, in the end, to set all my email clients with IMAP protocol: at least every email is now marked as read (on all devices) only if I actually READ it.
Bye
Mic
