AT&T Pricing, better off buying off-contract ? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

It looks to me like I'm going to be money ahead to pay full retail on the Tilt 2 next month.
I'm on Media Net ($15.00 / month). If you buy on-contract, AT&T is going to force you on to a $30.00 / month data plan, so that's an extra $180.00 a year.
By my math, if I keep the phone longer than 13 months, I'm better off paying full retail of $499.00 for it and staying on Media Net.
Thoughts ?
The AT&T news keeps on a'comin' this weekend. After getting an idea of when the HTC Touch Pro 2 (aka Tilt 2) may be released, and then seeing it show up in inventory, the Boy Genius Report now says it has pricing information for it, as well as a couple of other anticiapted phones. Let's do this the easy way:
* Tilt 2: $299 after contract and $50 rebate; $499 retail.
* Touch Diamond 2: Codenamed the Warhawk and already seen at the FCC, will be known as the Pure and will go for $199 after contract and $40 rebate. Retails for $349.

I'm thinking about this too. Apparently though it doesn't matter if you buy it on or off contract. The new policy is if you get a new Smartphone (AT&T branded, however you do) after September 6, they can and "will" change you to the appropriate data plan. I don't know if they will actually enforce it for people who buy them off eBay and off contract.
What I am really surprised about is the Diamond 2 is only $350 off contract! That is dirt cheap! They go for around $500 on eBay!

The announcement about enforcing smart phone data plans was for people who didn't already have a smart phone I believe.
I'm hopeful I'll be able to keep my contract as is and get the 2 year price but no rebate. I'll be ordering through premiere though, so its usually more lax about the contract stuff.

I don't see how they could unless they are going to do some IMEA enforcement, and they never have before.
I guess ebay is going to be the way to go.

there are different ways to do this:
1- if you are able to, buy from premier. they dont ask you to change any data plan or anything
2- if you are unable to, buy it with contract, add the data plan. go home, put ur sim in your old phone (or any non-smartphone), call at&t and tell them you want to switch phones, and re-add the $15 medianet plan.
theres no point to buy it off contract if you can buy it w/contract

Where can I read this new policy ?
Does someone have a link to it ?
Thanks

Well AT&T has lost so much money with the iPhone that they had to make it back somehow. Good luck with AT&T. I hope they work out better for you than they did for me.

I think the particulars on this one are what's going to matter. I could purchase it on my wife's number .. she's got no data plan at all. I wonder if ATT is going to force you on a data plan if you don't currently have one now (and don't want one)
Again, worst case scenario I can pick one up on ebay and avoid their new policy but it would be nice to know for sure what the policy is.

They are supposedly going to do IMEI checking for all phones. They already do with the iPhone.
I can go all the way through checkout until I confirm my order on Premier and it doesn't ask me to switch data plans. If you have access to it, use it.

Premier isn't an option for me, but thanks for the info.

I am just learning about Premier, what is it or how do you get to be premier?

Premier is AT&T's service for corporate/business customers. For instance my employer has an 'employee' discount on plans, handsets, accessories, activation etc for personal accounts, though I've never noticed a price difference on phones. Usually just cheaper plans and better customer service.

When I bought my Tilt (1) they had me increase my plan too, but the guy told me that I dont have to keep it at the higher plan. He told me to wait 45 days, then call AT&T and switch it back down to the lesser plan. Worked just fine... Granted that was 2 years ago, so who knows if they changed their stance on that kind of thing...

AT&T Off Contract
My TP is about to die and I want to replace it. I prefer to get off contract and right now I have two concerns:
1. 3G speeds. Can I get it with a AU phone like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-HTC-TOUCH-P...ones?hash=item27ab9cfc19&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Will this phone really work at 3G speeds on ATT?
2. I'm also interested in WinMo 6.5 like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-TOUCH-PRO-2...ones?hash=item27abab1dc0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Does anyone on this site offer a ROM service?
Thx.
James

It only has UMTS850, not UMTS1900. That means it will work on some of AT&Ts 3G network but not all of it. Either the listed lied or didn't know that you need UMTS1900 to FULLY support AT&Ts 3G network. Just wait a bit, AT&Ts version will be out in less than a month. You can buy it retail for $500 off contract and probably less on eBay after it comes out.

A guy on brighthand was just doing a little juggling between an old iPhone and his current Nokia smartphone. He actually has a $30 smartphone data plan, but the point of his post was that after he undid a little iPhone issue, got his old 3G plan back up and running and put his sim back in his nokia, he immediately got a text informing him of his need for a smartphone data plan, and that one would be added for him if he failed to add it. They aren't ONLY checking the iPhone anymore.
They're definitely tightening things down. I doubt it is anywhere near airtight yet, but I'd be hesitant about using last year's workarounds.

I have this phone and it does only have 850 for 3g. For me it works just great because the area I live in has 850 for 90% of ATT 3g. You don't have to have the 1900 band to get "full" 3g it works on one or the other. But if your area doesn't use the 850 band then you won't get 3g. I agree, with the phone from ATT coming in one month it would be better to wait because you will save about $300.00 off retail.
My phone is unlocked and I have flashed Miri's v2.0 ROM, all works great and it is much faster than stock ROM. Once you get the ATT phone just HSPL and flash away the ATT bloat ROM.

T-mobile upgrade?

I know that Touch Pro2 price on t-mo has not been annouced.
I have been with t-mobile for 2 years, so my contract expires anyday now.
I was wondering about upgrade pricing, are the upgrade prices usually the same as for new customers? or do they try to rip off their current customers?
also my plan with t-mobile is a family plan, two phones. Can both phones be upgraded? or is the upgrade only for one phone? One phone will be upgraded to TP2, other to something more compact.
Last question, when doing upgrade, you don't have to return old phones?

No you don't return you old phones and you can upgrade both phones to whatever you want.
I don't like the way they have made it to where people have to get the data plan for upgrades. They started that crap with the release of the G1. Even though I have a data plan, doesn't mean everyone wants it or needs it. Just another way for these networks to make more $$$..

this is what i have seen in many places as well.
where did you get the 299 poetry?
T-Mobile Reps said they don't know it could be from 250 to 300.
3G Required No Matter What.
You can check over at TmoNews.com. I read around on a couple on different sites, and the most consistent price estimate I've seen is 299.99 on a 2-year contract. Or 349.99 on a 1-year. aanndd I don't think 3G is required. :]. The data plan is for sure, though. I got to preview the Touch Pro2 and all its goodness at my local Tmo store. I asked the Rep about the data plan, and he confirmed it is required.
In my opinion, it's well worth it. I might have to sell my Shadow and possibly my G1 for the Touch Pro2. When you're 17 and work at a theme park, money doesn't always go too far. Gonna be a shame to see my G1 go. I've taken a liking to Android, but it's no competition for the Touch Pro2. Gotta do what you gotta do. Anyways, there's my two cents.
^ agree that these prices from the tmobile blog are about as good as it gets for this awesome ppc! Let us know if anyone hears about any pre-orders!!
Anyone want to bet that the price will be over 250?

no, i mean the 2 year contract price, the same price you would pay if you were a new customer... in really rare cases customer care is able to take off 5-10% the 2 year price but that is really rare

Correct
Not anymore
All data or All-in-One devices REQUIRE a data plan of either $24.99 or $34.99 and it's CONTRACTED! Even if you decide to use another device that doesn't require data, the data plan can not be removed.
The ONLY way to get around the data plan is to pay full retail for the device and that goes for any device. (Effective as of 06-03-2009)
Thats crap! I hope AT&T doesn't start that BS or I'm going to have to start paying ridiculous amounts for my phones on eBay! Why doesn't stupid HTC put all the bands in at once? Why DONT they want people importing them? I'm sure they make more profit on the unbranded ones AND they don't have to warranty imports.

Buying an unlocked T-Mobile TP2 for $400...

Seem like a good deal, is it not? Also, would it work with 3G/HSDPA on AT&T and Media Net?
A TmoUS TP2 WILL NOT work on AT&Ts 3G at all, just EDGE. If you're with AT&T, just buy their Tilt 2
Damn, it was just intriguing for me because I was going to trade my Fuze plus $100. Alright, I'll just try and sell the phone for $300-$250 and put it towards the full price . No upgrade till 10/1/10.
AT&T mentioned something about me getting the 2 year contract price on a new phone plus $75. Anyone ever heard of this?

For the TP2? I doubt it unless that's a new customer price. Existing customers upgrade price is usually significantly higher but i don't know how att uprgrades work. Usually they advertise lower prices for new customers to lure them into a 2 yr contract. TMobile new customers get it for $149 but for existing customers upgrade it's like $350! Should be the other way around if u ask me.

Best price for off-contract DEFY?

Id like to buy a DEFY for my wife for Christmas, but I want to get it without the contract. The T-Mobile site says $379, most other places are $400+. Costco is listed as $329, but I don't think they sell off contract? Has anyone found a better price than T-Mobiles MSRP?
Anyway, maybe it would help others if we post good deals here when we find them. With a contract or without. Thanks!
Most places I have seen (off contract) have been more than the Tmo $380.
Amazon says list price $299, but then when you try to buy the price was over $400 (don't recall exactly).
Check costco if you have a membership there. If you don't you have to add $50 to the price anyway so you may as well go to a Tmo store.
The Amazon site is a little funny right now. It says $300 list price, $50 with a contract, then does the math for how much you're saving based off that $300 list price. But when you try and buy it without the contract it magically becomes $420. Something just seems off. Why wouldn't they base the savings off the $420 and tell you that you would save $370 instead of $250?
Just seems like being so close to Christmas time that you'd be able to find the phone for less than the MSRP. If I could get it for 300-350 I'd be pretty happy.

So do I. The price in UK going down 20 pounds.
Amazon sucks.
I actually was looking for the cheapest price myself off contract. I want to unlock it for use with at&t..
And I was so enraged when I checked amazon... I felt like it was false advertising because, I was about to order it from there on the spot..
I mean.. it has the 850 3g band for at&t... and none of at&t's phones were even rugged last time I checked.. I don't know if they still have tundra and rugby.. but, they were both ugly looking.
At any rate.. I am really hopin to grab this phone..

You can get the Tmo phone from the their stores and they will give you the unlock code if you pay full price for it.
I was told you have to call or email support and have your receipt ready, but they'll give it to you.
Then just stick your att sim in and go!
Keep in mind that att 3g is both 850 and I think 1900, but they are moving away from 1900 IIRC so chances are you will be ok.
This is of interest to me too. My primary carrier in Canada is Mobilicity which uses the AWS band, but all the major carriers (Bell, Telus, Rogers and their subsidiaries) use a network that is mainly 850 with some 1900 reinforcement in urban areas. The extra band is nice in case I need to use a different SIM outside my coverage area. And this would be a nice secondary phone to my Nexus One, for use when durability is necessary.
I don't know that anyone has started importing this phone in to Canada yet, but I'm close enough to the border that I can go shopping in WA state.

thats pretty good to know the odds are I won't be affected by lack of 1900, and it reinforces my desire to have that phone.
However, I'm also worried about the tmo version being more likely to be picked up and tagged with data than the unlocked version.

I don't think that would be an issue, but I can't say for sure.

will do as soon as i get back to California on the 15th, gona be the best Christmas with a $290 defy if i can pull it off
For anyone still interested..
Motorola's offical website is offering a free charger with the defy.
The defy at motorola is only 10$ more expensive than the actual tmobile store.
So by the time you add in taxes for me to buy it locally, it would be in the neighbor hood of 420$ plus free charger means I don't have to pay as much.
I would really rather *never* use a car charger.. but, emergencies happen.

Worth early contract cancellation and move to Verizon?

are any of you considering instead of buying the unlocked version for 750ish dollars instead just cancelling your current contract and moving to verizon for the supposed 200 dollar contract price?
I'm thinking the Pros so far would be LTE and verizon is currently having their 4GB for the price of 2GB data plan.
I thought about it briefly only because my fiance is on verizon and it would be nice to get a shared plan. However, I am on a very cheap legacy T-mobile plan with unlimited internet. I get anywhere from 5-10mbps down and 2 up in my area. It's not worth it for me.
I hadn't planned on buying the unlocked version at all. I'm currently on AT&T (and ridiculously on a contract...despite not initiating it) and I'm jumping ship when it's released for Verizon. Right now it's like a $230 ETF, but AT&T credited me $100 because it was their miscommunication that entered me onto a new contract, in the first place. Yes, I'll still end up paying $130, but I saved $300 when I bought my phone (I was planning on buying it outright, they gave me the contract pricing but started a new contract).
Pros:
*MUCH* faster internet. I have devices on both networks and the difference is massive from 4-6Mbps and 25-35Mbps (both of which are the average of what I've gotten on both networks)
*Much* better coverage. Inside of the city I have great 3.5G on AT&T. 30 minutes outside of the city things start dropping off *very* quickly.
Better group data connections. On AT&T, anytime I'm in a very crowded area (think baseball or football stadiums) my data connection drops off to nothing. I still have full service, but I get no data at all. This means I get very few texts, if any, and my internet is all but useless. This is the biggest annoyance I have with AT&T, and I've been true for years.
Currently it is cheaper to switch then it is to buy unlocked. I am on AT&T right now and my prorated termination fee is $235. If I switch to Verizon it will cost me the $235 + $199.99 or $299.99 (whatever the phone ends up costing). in other words I will be spending $435 or $535 for the phone vs. 700+ to import it. On top of that I can sell my current phone (atrix) for around $200 (with accessories) which will bring my costs to either $235, $335, or $500+ depending on what I do.
Long story short its currently a better deal to switch carriers unless they release the unlocked version here in the us for ~$500.
If you're switching from AT&T it's probably worth it considering the monthly plans are about the same price If you're switching from T-mobile it probably isn't considering your plan is probably much cheaper.
Obviously you can make your own call on your situation, if you have LTE in your area, if Verizon's voice service is better in your area, or if you have family members on Verizon, etc.
I think the answer is different for each case. There's definitely no 1 answer here.
I was considering doing the same thing until I looked at how much it would cost me on Verizon vs. the cost if I were to stick with my T-Mobile plan.
Right now I'm paying a nice $113/m for:
750 minutes split across four lines, all with unlimited texting, and unlimited data on my phone.
by my calculations, it would be at least $80/m with my student (15%) discount at Verizon for just me, never mind the fact that I would need to pay a $200 ETF and then $200 for a phone. By the time I have my GN in hand it would have cost me $400 to get there to a more expensive plan..
If I were to switch my entire family over to Verizon, it would cost so much more per month, and they would all need to buy new phones - it's not worth it.
Instead, I sold my old nexus one for $150, bought a SGS II for $275 and am currently about to sell it for $520 or so. By my calculations, that takes off about $400 of my GN, bringing it down to about $300 - a very reasonable price for this phone.
The speeds on T-Mobile here in Seattle are pretty awesome as well. I just did a speedtest and got 7mb down (for some reason only 300kb up), while LTE may be faster, the price and battery drain makes it completely not worth it.
Unlocked + $30 PrePaid unlimited 4G T-mobile plan = pure ownage.
I'll be also swapping my HTC Rezound for Verizon's Nexus as it's within the return policy frame. Two Nexi woot
I think it may be worth switching now after reading the comments from that youtube video of the Verizon version of the phone it's listed as having 32GB as opposed to the 16GB for the unlocked version.
I'm ETFing my 2-line family plan with T-Mobile and switching to Verizon. About 4 months ago, the data speeds in my neighborhood dropped from about 2.5 Mbps to 0.5 Mbps. T-Mobile has done nothing to rectify the issue, so I'd rather pay a bit more each month and actually get what I pay for. However, I am not interested in any phone other than the GNex.
And this why carriers continue to rule in the usa because the sheep like subsidies. Vomits.

Actually they rule because of coverage and devices. tmobile works for some people and doesn't for most which is why it is in the financial quagmire it currently is in.
I think it's totally worth it, and I almost did it. Ultimately, for now I think I will stick with the GSM version, but the lure of LTE is very tempting. Here are the factors you should consider:
1a) Verizon has (much) faster data speeds on their Nexus if you have LTE in your area.
1b) Verizon has slower data speeds on their Nexus if you do not have LTE in your area.
2) Verizon is much better for use in crowds, like at football games where AT&T doesn't work at all.
3) Verizon generally has better coverage in buildings.
4) AT&T and T-Mobile have (much) better international options. Verizon is basically unusable internationally because you will lose your double your data plan if you ever switch to an international plan and/or rent an international phone, even temporarily (and yes, I had something like 4 conversations with various Verizon representatives about this).
I have unlimited data on AT&T, so that plus the international issue (1-2 trips a year) made me decide to pass for now. It's still incredibly tempting, though, so I wouldn't blame you at all. Just do yourself a favor and don't let the carrier subsidy be the deciding factor.
I have to admit, I didn't think of this angle. I still have a contract from AT&T from the original iPhone 4 (sold long ago). I believe my ETF currently is around $180 or so. I bought the unlocked GN two weeks ago and have been loving it, but Verizon's (expensive) network is tempting as is LTE.
But I look at it this way. I don't need more than 5 down. I mean 25-30 would be nice, but I just don't see the need for that type of bandwidth on a phone. Perhaps if I had a tethering plan, but add that in and you will burn through 4-6 gigs/month fast...so then you look at the 10 gig plan, which is a fortune. Next thing you know, your monthly bill for one line is like $130, and that's with only 450 non-rollover minutes and no texts. Not for me.
I have two lines on ATT, both with unlimited data and 200 SMSs. After my company discount, it only costs us $117 after taxes. We have like 4,000 rollover minutes.
I just can't justify it, but I do fully agree Verizon is a much better network than ATT. And then there's the "toss any pre-paid SIM" international angle...
It's just sensible to stay where I am for now. If Verizon ever did an unlimited data promotion again, I'd join in a heartbeat. They already tested the waters with double data, so I'd say it's always possible for a short-running unlimited data promo.

Also if you think the GSM nexus is going to be at this price forever you are nuts. As soon as more supply opens up and other retailers start selling it the price is going to fall rapidly. I'd just wait a month and be perfectly happy buying it from Amazon for much less.

What do you consider "much less?" I'd bet it holds above $550 for many, many months.
For reference, the SGSII is still $552 on Amazon. It's been out for quite a while...
I don't think a single person thinks the GNEX will be $750 "forever."

$200 less and no etf is a lot of change.

Just found out they are offering Microsoft Employees unlimited data for 20 dollars, so looks like i'm definitely switching over to verizon and just cancelling AT&T

...so basically MSFT is incenting their employees to go to VZW for, well, Android phones?
Sounds like a great deal! (/sarcasm)

I like options. Sometimes its cheaper to buy outright and other times its cheaper to go on contract if you plan to be with a carrier for a couple years. In the US we only have 4 carriers really, 2 of which are GSM... so we don't switch carriers often and prices are about the same.
Buy now, pay later is the American dream.

[Q] Verizon Unlimited Data Note 2

I have a HTC Thunderbolt with unlimited Data and most months I go over 2 Gigs. I'm going to get the note 2 when it comes out and I want to keep my data plan so I need to know some things.
1.) Has anyone went through this ordeal yet ?
2.) Do I need to buy an international version, and why?
3.) Where can I buy one for under 50 Bucks ? (Just kidding) !!!http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
International version will not work with Verizon LTE. You need to wait for the Verizon announcement.
You won't be able to use any other model on Verizon than the official Verizon model. That's the fate of it being a CDMA carrier like Sprint, even when both use LTE which is a GSM based technology.
Not sure if you are aware but if you plan to keep your Verizon unlimited data plan, you will need to buy the phone unsubsidized.

Yes, I know, but, does that mean I have to buy it from Verizon, or can I get it from Amazon ?

Update: LTE! There are many people commenting about this. Apparently there's a version of the international Note 2 (not the N7100) that sports LTE, the model number is N7105 and it comes with "LTE 700 MHz Class 17 / 2100" (Sources: GSM Arena, Engadget and XDA forums). If you have a N7100 the LTE radio is simply not there. However this is not guarantee that the N7105 will work with AT&T's or Tmo's LTE, it all depends if those frequencies are compilant with those carriers' respective LTE signals. As LTE network compatibility can be a deal breaker for many people within the US, I suggest you to research very well before buying it. If someone can squeeze any info out of AT&T or Tmo, please comment. To shed more light on this issue, you can Google the xda thread 1917383.
No, you will have to wait until Verizon launches their version. The ones you see on Amazon are international versions and only works on GSM networks (ex, AT&T, TMobile)

I guess I have no choice. Thanks for the info.
wait for verizon version, go to best buy or wherever and get it, dont let them activate it, go to a verizon store and have them activate it and make sure they maintain your unlimited data.
also if you get it at best buy consider their $10 a month insurance as its supposed to come with no deductable and you are now buying devices out right full price....otherwise face verizons rip off insurance or having to buy a device out right again or use an upgrade and lose unlimited if you break it.
this is how i did two s3's with no problems and kept unlimited. (i have not had to use the insurance from best buy yet, so i cant speak as to how well they handle a claim).

2 phones @ $700 a piece = $1400 (intrest free, pay off with tax return)
3g max use = 10g, now 4g = max 40g a month. (myself, not including light usage of other 2 phones on plan).
current cost for 3 smartphones unlimited data each = $205 a month.
cost a month for 3 smartphones with 10g data shared plan = $220 a month for 10g + $10 a month for extra 2g to get 40g = additional $150 = a total a month of = $370 a month to satisfy my usage.
$370 - $205 (current cost) = $165 extra a month x 24 months = $3,960 extra to get my phones subsidized over course of two year contract using the data I currently use now. The subsidized phones would save me $500 each phone = $1,000.
So $3,960 - $1000 = $2,960 more over two year contract to get subsidized phones (2 of the 3 I have on my contract, the other is still the same).
$2,960 - the cost of buying out right ($1400) = $1,560 dollars more + out pocket cost of 2 subsidized phones ($300) = $1,860 saved over the course of a two year contract.
....$1,860 or $78 a month saved by buying 2 phones out right + i keep unlimited on 3 lines, dont renew a ****ty contract, and can use as much data as i like on any line.
someone check my math....
(side note; i didnt even go in to comparing the insurance vs. verizon insurance....as far as it concerns me anymore the only thing i need verizon for is their network, i could care less what else they have to sell me).
either way even if i lost money, id rather give it to best buy then verizon

My unlimited contract is over in March. Will I have to renew the contract or is it a month to month thing. I gotta keep my unlimited data.

if you buy the device out right your contract will expire and you go month to month under the same terms, the up side is you keep unlimited,, the down is you pay full price for the device. some people point out that since your contract is technically over Verizon could make changes , but that would cost them business as people would just leave since there's no early termination fee or contract.
basically if you let Verizon help you (subsidize) with the device cost, that's when you're back in contract and lose unlimited.
i chose to buy my device, let my contract expire and keep unlimited. then i don't pay for home internet to save extra money.
that's my understanding of it.
---------- Post added at 09:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:27 PM ----------
its interesting as now i get the upgrade notifications and don't care anymore, i don't care about when this phone or that goes off contact. i don't care about their anything, not signing up for two more years, if i want I'll leave with no early termination. really with no contract i don't care what they say about anything.
when phones came out they hit you for over minutes, then roaming, then minutes were cheap and there was no roaming. that's when text were around and they hit you for texting to much. now they gave unlimited data to get people to try smart phones and once devices improved and people got hooked, capped data.
not me, I'll go back to a dumb phone if i ever actually lose unlimited data.
Good information faber78... I feel the same way. Once VZW pulls the grandfathered unlimited data I'm gone...
Just picked up a SCH-I605 from Swappa for quite a bit less than the long dollar @ full retail.
To date, I've had good luck buying "new to me" phones on both eBay and Swappa. However, I think I like Swappa thing a bit more... it seems a more straight forward and user friendly. (Didn't feel like I was shoveling through all the busted screen & bad ESN phones.) Plus, there is a link to swappa in the xda banner above.... If XDA gives it a thumbs up, it must be good.
Only thing that slowed me down was waiting for the micro SIM card. Just had to call VZW customer service they FedEx'ed me one straight away.
