What OS-ROM version are you running?
That is, have you flashed to a custom/cooked ROM?
I'm asking because various message-related issues are reported with some roms that are based on Manila 2.5 (beta) or WM6.5.1 (beta). The fix to these problems are sometimes "try this different messaging version" or "disable HTC messaging" or "flash to a less-beta ROM". If so, check the thread where you got the ROM.
But, if you're running the stock ROM that came with your phone...has it been like this since you got it? If not, did you add something or change something before this behavior started?

my rom is 1.19.401.0WWE,WM6.5.1, I installed chinese font before it started.but i can reply and revceive the SMS
Have you tried a hard reset? It worked for me on my kaiser when it would not let me send MMS over 300k. If you do a hard reset make sure you back up your phone just in case but do not restore your backup. Reinstall programs 1 at a time and test after every install to see what is screwing you up.
i have tried hard reset, the problem is when i type menu and select sms, there is no TO option, I cannot type everything,annoying.

Firstly thanks to all the hard working people that bring us upgrades to the OS on our phones.
I was running the LVSW 0408 version for a week without problem. After reading the vote for the best WM6, I decided to switch to Black 2.0.
I have noticed that I have a new message stuck on my Today screen and also 1 unread message in the Text Messages folder, but there is nothing there.
I tried the "Clear Text messages" option and empty deleted items, but no luck.
After a heap of searching I found a thread that suggested to install clearnotify_878.zip, but this did nothing. I cannot even find the application, although the system says it is installed. I did do a soft reset after the install
I understand this is not a major bug, but it is annoying. Has anyone got a fix ?

i cant send a sms. i go to add recipient and it is greyed out.
i also get a message that says
"cannot be signed or encripted"
if i go to read a message, can see there is one there but when i open it, it is blank and i cant reply or foreward, i donno

It's not a common problem, usually if there's a messaging problem its with mms, not sms. Have you tried a hard reset?
hard reset of course solved the problem

ASOP roms always **** up when receiving mms (the will receive but always be tiny)
sending is ok
my APN's are setup/backed up and known to be right
im on o2-uk.......seriously, is there something im missing !!?!?
why the doesnt it work properly ??
someone must know
(theyre always fine with sense based roms)

Ah-ha, I had this exact problem!! And I solved it like this!!
1. Delete ALL APN's from your device!!
2. Input the APN settings from O2 (Here: http://mobilereviews.o2.co.uk/devices/device.jsp?deviceId=651&tab=8&step=2&settingId=3201 )
3. Press so the green dot is selected (This APN will take care of Internet Access AND MMS, no need for 2)
4. Reboot your device.
5. When your phone starts up again, go to Messaging, Press Menu and go to Settings
6. Scroll down to Custom User Agent
7. Select iPhone (3.0)
(Optional) 8. If you are using Handcent (or another SMS App, you will have to change the User Agent in there to match).
PLEASE NOTE!!
If you are using Handcent, you may not be able to download MMS pictures via Handcent itself. If I receive a MMS I need to go to the Stock Messaging app and download it via that!!

shame ive just Nandroided back to Leedroid (without a back up for defrost!!)
ill stick defrost back on this evening and give the settings a go....i know my backup of apns is correct as ive used them on plenty roms but ASOP ones always buggered up....never knew of the iphone setting tho, i shall be most pleased if this works (using chomp at the moment)
so, just to confirm, your MMS come through at the correct size ? and sending MMS has no issue ?

I tried LOADS of APN's (including ones which came with various ROMs) and the one from O2 is the only one I have had to work.

Instructions seemed to work ok but its a bit of a pain that you need to download the mms manually in the stock app first
not sure why the download button within Handcent doesnt work!

Hi everyone,
I got a CDMA Desire (USCC) and using it ouside the us.
I encounter a regular problem when exchaning texts with my friends whose phone numbers contain "0" i.e. zero digit.
The problem is that when I receive a text from them the digit "0" is replaced with a letter "D" or "d" in sender's number. I can't use "reply" and therefore, to respond, i have to create a new sms all the time.
i googled my problem, but haven't found any similar threads.
Any help will be appreciated!

I have no idea, but have you installed custom fonts, languages or a keyboard.
And what apps are you using for text messages?
I installed morelocal app to enable russian. Fonts and keyboard have not changed. Do u think that could be the reason?
It's possible, try to uninstall it and reboot and see how it goes.
You are on a stock ROM right?

I think, I've ran out of ideas by now, then . It looks like it's an error in your ROM, since you are on a stock rom and using stock apps. The last thing I can think of is to use some sms backup, then delete the data of the "messages" process and see if it happens again.

Hello everyone I have a problem four days, I can not send and receive text messages, he says "can not send." All from when I installed a custom ROM. Thinking it was a problem with the configuration of different countries of the ROM I tried reinstalling the stock, but the problem persists. The number of the Message Centre is correct. I own a T2 Ultra D5303. I also tried it with other sim of different operators but the error persists.

I had similar problem.. once... with stock rom.
what i did is :-
if you have hangout installed
set it as default sms app
then try sending sms through hangout
install latest ver. of hangout from this link
if msg is sent/worked then try this :
click menu
click settings
click apps
click all (swipe to right until you see all)
search for messaging & click it
click force stop
click clear data
click clear cache
click clear default
Restart phone
now open messaging app
now try sending message
reply here what happened
I tried to clear the cache and the data but the problem persisted.
Now I had to change sim and phone operator and I had to reinstall the stock rom to inviase text messages, trying to re-install the custom rom the problem returns.
I state that the installation of custom ROMs is done properly, also tried starting from stock rom clean, but nothing to do. The message center number is always correct but it appears yellow trinagolo with the error can not send, receive, not even text messages. I tried with 2 different custom rom, but in both there is the problem
You can make a call? If you put your SIM in another phone can you send SMS?
