Anyone figured out how to access GPS in Motorola A3100? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Bought a new Motorola A3100 this month and it's fun, and look at the potentials!
One thing I'd like to do is access the built-in GPS hardware in something other than the preloaded Google Maps. From what I read online and from poking around the registry in my phone I know that it has a GPS hardware that speaks NMEA 0183 (I have seen a log file on my device with the same NMEA stuff my standalone Garmin eTrex provides), has a GPS intermediate driver that all apps needing GPS access should go through, the hardware is in GPD1:, and GPSID provides COM1: for others to use. But when I tried to open COM1: with PuTTY it never succeeds.
My immediate goal is to get GPS2Blue to work - right now it hangs and needs a soft reset to kill it. Longer term goal is to load a second map/nav program which can store entire maps on device instead of going data all the time as I only have 500MB/month.

use gpsgate software which loads at boot, runs in background, finds gps on com7 and makes a virtual com port for it on com2 and distributes gps to any app ...go get destinator9 and maps and install and the thing works great!! ...all that stuff is found on this site.

Dash W/ Google Maps and Bluetooth GPS reciever?

I have a T-mobile Dash and i installed the new Google maps software for smartphones. and picked up a Cellink BTG-7000 bluetooth gps reciever.
I can't get google maps to detect the bluetooth gps
i paired the device and created a outgoing com port to the gps ( says BTG-7000 (com 7)
- ive tried un checking secure connection
- also created an incoming port but does not have gps reciever name in connection...
the google maps software says i have to goto the start - settings - GPS
but i do not have such an option.
Anyone have any ideas?
dave
Hmmm, I am not sure either. I just tried to get it to recognise my bluetooth gps device. Surely someone knows what is going on.
Same issue here
I am having the same issue with my Dash/Bluetooth GPS with Google Maps. There is a FAQ (http://www.google.com/gmm/gmmfaq.html?platform=winm-SmartPhone-T-Mobile+Dash/web#4) that refers to a "Settings->System->GPS" control panel applet that does not exist.
I have the same problem. I think the issue has to do with the initialization of the BT GPS unit and have WM see it first (as GPS) rather than as a BT device that it has paired with. The GPS applet would take care of it by sending it cold boot parameters etc.
Alternatively, you can download a smartphone version of the applet from the GPS manufacturer and run that before running Google Maps. I am not sure but it might fix the problem.
Edit: I wonder if the HTC S620 Variant has the GPS applet in its ROM? If it does, perhaps someone can extract the cab file and share it with the community. That might fix our GPS woes...
I'm running the s620 ROM. There is no GPS applet that I see...
there is no gps
Darn..that sucks.
the settings they tell you to go look at only exist in the PPC version.
Was able to use a BT GPS device to work with Windows LIVE search ( Google Mobile Maps rival )
If GMM can be forced to use a particular comm port it should also work .. anyone ?
HTC S620 phone BTW.
Figured it out !

Umm, same thing I wrote in the other thread:
Folks, is there a reason you guys are so desperate to use GMM? Especially knowing your GPS doesn't work natively without hacks?
Just use Windows Live Search Mobile? IMO, LIGHT YEARS ahead of GMM in terms of usability and fit and finish. AND it'll find your GPS both on GPSID (what GMM uses) as well as COM ports. No hacks. Simple. Straightforward. Elegant.
http://wls.live.com from your mobile phone. Click the Windows Mobile client.
I've played with both and I've found GMM to be much more one handable. Now when I say that I know WLS is one handable but things go slow. You can do things quick with GMM one handed.
Also GMM adds a features that WLS doesn't. One example is that if you go to a contact in your contact list it gives you the option to 'Locate on Google Maps' and it will use the address in the contact information to locate the contact on Google Maps. And I might be wrong but isn't Microsofts Satelite (Not Road Map) imagery older then googles?
GMM cleaner and smaller but lacking big feature
GMM also seems to use much less memory. Great footprint compared to WLS which slows the whole phone down. When I turn off WLS I also have to restart most of the time because the phone can't recoop some of that memory. The one thing I don't like about GMM is that when using the directions feature with GPS, you can only look at your route, or follow your track - not both at the same time like WLS. (IE right before every turn you get a popup with which way to go.) It's much more manual with GMM.

GPS - how to test it

Hello,
I got this PPC a few days ago (from t-mobile. germany) and I still did not get the GPS thing running...
Does anyone have an idea with witch free program I can test GPS and how I have to configure it? GPS isn't really covered in the manual.
Or do i have to buy an antenna or something extra?
Thanks for help
Did your device come with some GPS related software such as a navigation package, if so which one?
You don't need an external aerial for it to work, if you haven't got any software there are a number of free utilities that can be used to check that it is working - Mike
ok, it's great to hear that i don't need a hardware addon to get it work, but i don't know other gps programs than gpsdash... and gpsdash doesn't work, i dont know how to configure it, it always says "satellites in use: 0"
how do i have to configure the com port and the baud rate?
For a start leave the GPS icon alone you don't need to mess with that.
In GPS Dash you want to select the following:
NMEA data type
Baud Speed 9600
Com Port 4
then you should start to see things working, I don't have that application on either of my Arte based devices, but these settings will work.
Otherwise have a look for the old TomTom GPS driver from version three or earlier I know this works as I use it from time to time on both devices.
Download, unzip and copy the CAB file to your memory card, then using the file explorer on the device locate the cab file and tap it to install the application. - Mike

test gps chipset functionality

Hi there,
Is there a way i can test if the gps chipset on my new p3300 is working properly?. I installed Iguidance but it will never get a fix although it does auto detect the gps port . I ran quickgps over wifi and despite downloading the latest fixes, Iguidance fails to get a fix
I am looking for any freeware appz which can just tap into the gps receiver and start spitting some data so i can be assured its not the gps module but Iguidance. Something like a gps viewer which displays the # of sats, lat n longitudes etc.
I appreciate any help I can get as I have only 2 more days before i can get this device exchanged.
Thanks in advance!~
btw, I am running Wm6 using B&b3.7 rom
Search on google for visualgpsce.
Bye
Grab a copy of the TT GPS Driver 2,06 from here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=13 install that as it is an application in its own right.
Fire up the application on the Artemis and select the GPS tab in the application Use the following Settings:
Top drop down box "NMEA 0183v2 9600"
Second drop box "COM4"
Make sure the two sliders in the middle of the screen are to the right, then check the grey/ blue box top left, return to the "Status" tab and take the unit outside, you should see some activity and get a position fix after a couple of mins - Mike
Thank you guys so much..
After running the app, i got 12 sats in view and 7 fix. So w00t, the gps chip is working.
Now to figure out whats wrong with iguidance
Thanks again...
Not too sure about that app as I have not tried it (yet) - does the GPS hardware actually start when you fire up the application - if you can configure it to use COM4, Baud 9600 do so and try it again. The indication the GPS has fired up is down to the LEDs on the device, once started it will flash orange to signify its in use. If this doesn't happen you might need to look into using Fransons GPS Gate to present a virtual GPS port to the application - Mike
Well, I do see the orange light blinking when Iguidance is running but still sees no sat's.
I even upgraded to V3.01 and same issue. Also tried Franson gate app and no luck.
I could try tomtom since that appz does see the sats and gets a fix ( tried it using a free US map) but i am having trouble loading the N.A+canada map since i don't have the cab file for it just the extracted map files which Tomtom HOME will refuse to load unless its a cab file i believe
Off to google to hunt on instructions on how to make cab files...
last time i checked iguidance v3 wasn't compatible with the artemis.
Oh ic. I did come across a couple of posts reflecting the same .
Oh well..I loved the map loader feature of Iguidance. Sad to see its gone in the upcoming V4.
Anyways I got tomtom running.. i was suppose to have the maps in the root folder of the memory card not in a sub-folder !

what does the GDP port acutally do?

Found in Settings, System, External GPS, Programs
I know that it says that this is the port that GPS data communicates with software wanting GPS data but how does that actually differ to COM9 which communicates the GPS Data.
I know it sounds like a strange question, but please read it twice and it will make more sense.
Thanks
This is the MS virtual GPS driver port that interface with the actual physical on-chip GPS port COM9. This basically functions like gpsgate such that multiple GPS app can open that GDP port simultaneously.
thanks ww2250,
that was a very clear explanation. I had heard that these newer handsets could do what Fransons GPS Gate could do!
It does give you the option to set it as a COM port or just nominate a GDP port. How do you know which one to use?
And is it best set to none (aswell as disabling 'manage my connections automatically') if only 1 application needs access to the gps data?
thanks.
If you are just using one app at a time, i.e. no simultaneous opening of any GPS port, these settings shouldn't concern you. It will work regardless of what you set in the GPS applet if you use COM9 directly.
I do plan on running multiple applications at the same time.
Infact, whilst I am running TomTom Navigator 6, I am trying to run in the background a datalogging program, called GpsDIS by E Gerlach.
So whilst 2 apps are needing the NMEA data, what should I set the GDP port to?
(on a related separate note, does WM6 have vb runtime built in, or does it have to be installed?)
thanks
Then you just choose GDP1 as the virtual port and COM9 as the physical port in the GPS applet. In your GPS app, use GDP1.
There are some old stuborn apps that just refuse to use ports other than COMX, however.

Tilt2 GPS Port # and mapping?

I'm trying to configure DeLorme Street Atlas 2010HH to talk to the GPS on my new AT&T Tilt2 stock. SA only seems to understand COMn ports and the GPS port doesn't seem to be in the list.
Google Mobile Maps at least has a radio button to select using Windows Location information, and that worked.
There is an control panel for External GPS that seems to map hardware ports into shared COM ports, but I'm not sure if that will do the trick for SA2010HH.
I haven't gotten it to work yet.
Any ideas?
What is the port that HTC provides a driver for? How do I map that successfully?
Thanks,
Dave.

Every reference I've ever seen has the GPS on the TP2 assigned to COM4. I'm not really sure how you can map to that for SA2010 (never used it before)

I had the same problem at first. What I did was take the phone outside where I could get sat lock, opened Google Maps Mobile, while GMM still opened I opened SA2010 went into GPS settings and it pretty much found it by itself. That was about a month ago so I'm not exactly sure about my sequence.
This is what I see in GPS settings for SA2010
Device NMEA 0183
Baud Rate 4800
Comport COM4:
State Pennsylvania
Coords 40 You get the idea. I can't think right now how to put the degree symbol in there.
If I remember correctly I set the state before trying the GMM so I don't know how much difference that will make.
Number 1- You should always search before starting a new thread. I am sure you would find the answer to you original question. It is Com4.
Number 2- I am pretty sure you don't use External GPS, you keep it configured to use the GPS as is. Delorme should see it, just like Goggle Maps does.
Number 3- Why not contact Delorme customer service?
