There will be Windows 7 phone, but what about the Windows Mobile 7 - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Hello all,
As we know all, there will be the Windows 7 phone series, with the new UI,etc... OK
But, anyone know if there will be a Windows Mobile 7 ?
In fact, a lot of compagny use Windows Mobile 5 or 6 on PDA or NON Phone device, in order to use professionnal application.
I would like to know if Microsoft will release a Windows Mobile 7 in addition to Windows Phone7
Thanks a lot if you have an answer
regards,
Nixeus

I've written about that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=634790
In short: The Windows Mobile 7 project is dead. They killed the project about one and a half years ago and started from scratch with what is now Windows Phone OS 7.0.

Wow
I don't understand the Microsoft Choice !!!
How companies will use Mobile system for Non phone ARM device ?
They will need to use non Microsoft system
I'm sad that Windows Mobile is dead

That's not actually an answer to the question.
There almost certainly will be PNAs etc, as CE6.0 or CE7 will be available. They may not have the WP7 UI, but I don't think you get the UI on any PNA.

[Q] Will Windows Mobile 6.1 / 6.5 Apps work ?

Hi guys,
Over the years as a Windows mobile fan, i have acumalated quite a large amound of Windows Mobile 6.1 / 6.5 Apps / games etc.. I know they have almost always worked on both 6.1 and 6.5 but will this be the case for Windows Mobile 7 ?
Are my collection of apps etc.. any good ?
Thanks
WM 6 or older apps won't work on Windows Phone 7. There is no backwards compatibility.
Consider WP7 not as "Windows Mobile 7", next generation of WM, but something completely new.

Exactly. It's not Windows Mobile 7 but Windows Phone 7.
So this would mean everything new from scratch, but i'm sure new apps and stuff should start coming out for it considerably quick right?
I'm a bit of a app/game freak love to customise my gadgets, loved the CHT UI for my HD2 so would love it if something like that was available for Windows Phone 7.
I want to but the HD7, but at really attached to my beloved HD2 and all the apps and custom stuff i have done to it, i'm sure you know what i mean and how i feel.
Thanks for the replies very much appreciated.
There will be lots of apps and especially games for WP7.
However, there will not be any sort of home screen customization/hacking. Maybe eventually but it will only come in the way of hacked firmware and will not be officially supported (this is no different than CHT though).

[Q] Android on Windows 7

Will android be available on windows phone 7? I had a hd2 and loved being able to switch between windows mobile and android. Im thinking of buying the hd7 once it comes out on t-mobile but want to know if there will be a realease of a linux hack for android on windows phone 7 later on.
Since the OS is locked down (for the time being), I wouldn't hold your breath as I don't see that being possible anytime soon.
Not at the moment.
Someone might be able to make this addition to the phone sometime but there are no options at the moment.
Guess the same goes for Windows Mobile then? Damn i wanted hat HTC 7 Pro..but not with Windows Phone

Why would you want to downgrade to an OS made by an advertising vendor?
Windows Mobile would be an upgrade.

windows mobile 7 application

Hello,
I have seen freeware websites , there are windows mobiles 7 applications , but i cannot download straight to pc like windows mobile 5/6 , i need software like Zune Software or something like that , i have never been using windows mobilw 7 phone so never been trying.
So anybody know is that windows mobile 7 applications can install manually like
windows mobile 5/6 or do i need special pc software like itunes.
Thanks
to install apps you must use the Marketplace tile. this will let you access music, games etc. beware you must have a data connection and probably wifi for bigger files if you want to sync your music and picture you MUST use Zune software. and the sync it with your WP7 device.
so , do you mean i cannot transfer cab file to the device and then on the file explorer i cannot install cab file by double clicking like windows mobiles 5/6?
Thanks

You are correct in your assumption.
Windows mobile 7
i have owned many windows mobile phone since the xda1.
i never owned such a rubbish as bad as windows mobile 7.
i have now moved to android 2.2 and i am very happy but why microsoft ruined such excellent windows mobile 6.5 with this rubbish.
you cant sync with outlook.
you dont have file explorer.
there is no expansion slot for sd card.
i cant use any of my old softwares.
the platform is gone back to different system
Microsoft is doing same thing apple is been doing for years..... manipulating users.....

As a former wm6.5 owner, I can say you're full of crap to call WP7 rubbish.
None of the things you mentioned with the exception of SD card are missed.
Just because things are done differently doesn't make them rubbish, just different, and in this case, better.
And if you think Android 2.2 is better, you are certifiably mad!

MS didnt ruin WM 6.5, its still available and you can always get a WM 6.x device if thats what you want. WP7 is completely different from WM and as such wont suit anyone looking for the power and flexibility of WM.

there is no expansion slot for sd card.

There's also another saying that goes, "People fear change because they are afraid to leave their comfort zones. They usually stagnate."
It's Windows Phone 7.
There's no such thing as Windows Mobile 7, you cannot install or use apps from previous Windows Mobile 6/5/4 oses. Windows Phone 7 is a completely new os.

So do you mean all applications that i bought for Windows Mobile 6/5/4 oses will be useless for Windows Phone 7.
Many thanks

Yes
Yes, you are correct, Windows Mobile 6.X applications will not work on Windows Phone 7. However, as I discover daily, more and more 6.X applications are being rewritten for WP7. Today, I use many WP7 versions of the WM 6.X applications I depended on.
BTW I will NEVER go back to WM 6.x, NEVER!!!!!!
Yes, windows mobile is no longer fully supported and WP7 was built from the ground up. No Winmo apps will work on WP7 as it utilizes an entirely different file type. WP7 is not Windows mobile 7, it's something much bigger.

[Q] Windows Mobile 6 Apps on Windows Phone 7?

Hi !
As far as I know, beneath Windows Phone 7 there is basically still Windows CE running. So I'm wondering, is/may/will it be possible to run Windows Mobile 6 Apps on Windows Phone 7? Or do we already know that this can't happen because the underlying architecture is too different? Is anyone working on this?
For example, has anyone tried to copy a Windows Mobile 6 Filemanager to WP7 and run it somehow?
Best regards
intripoon
I'm going to go with no here.... not only from all of the months and months and months of people saying no but from the simple fact that WP7 is based on silverlight which wm 6.1 and 6.5 aren't.... at all....
This is why aps aren't backwards OR forwards compatible which people put up a pretty big stink about when WP7 was announced but seems to have died down now that we're able to see what can actually be done with silverlight
So... no.. not compatible
Also, just think about the work to emulate the wm6 crappiness. Thousand of empty bucles, glitchy graphic rendering, millions of delays, agggg..
No, seriously. Windows Mobile was powerful, but it's just too old. It should be possible to emulate the applications (in theory everything is possible), but I think is just too much effort, and there is no such big reason to put resources on something like that.

Installing Neverware/CloudReady Chrome OS on Surface RT

If you guys haven't heart about it: neverware.com
I have already installed it on old laptops. I wonder if I can do the same for the Surface RT? Is it possible through hacking, etc.?

Only if it has support for ARM. We don't even have secure boot unlocked yet, so this isn't even close to possible until then. why don't you work on getting the secure boot unlocked? or work on porting apps to RT 8.1

Windows 10 iot working on Windows RT
I was doing some searching the other day and came across a post on twitter where someone has managed to install Windows 10 iot for the Raspberry PI onto a Windows RT. Not sure if this is old news but, was thinking this could open some doors for progression on a fully working windows 10 rom.
