BBC Iplayer on HTC Desire..> - Desire General

Can anyone confirm if the playback of BBC Iplayer videos are flawless like on the iphone?
=============================================================================
Thanks for your comments guys. Had the desire for about 3 weeks now, and can say that Beebplayer plays videos at a 'watchable' quality over Wifi. It's not as good as the iphone (Which I will give a 10/10 to, because of its perfect quality and smooth framerates), but you have to take into consideration that videos on Iplayer are also specifically converted for iphones, while BeebPlayer uses a copy of the video converted for standard phones. Eastenders, for example, is a ~30 minute soap which is only 42MB in total to stream...
All in all, its okay. Should be better when Flash 10.1 comes round.

seems to play fine. only tested one show using beebplayer. worked fine! not great quality unfortunately but more than watchable and seems pretty good!

evildead - did you have to pause the show for it to stream for a little while, or did you click play from the beginning and the video finished without stuttering?
On the slashgear review they said that you had to pause and wait for the whole video to stream first...kinda stupid..

im pretty sure it depends on the connection speed so as phones dont have speeds we have in computers then you gotta pause it for a bit to let it load

Worded fine for me via beebplayer - incidentrally, opening up the iPlayer website and selecting a vid to watch gave me the option to use beebplayer which worked a treat.
streamed over 3G/H and played fine from the start, no need to pause.

nope. on a 10mb wifi connection no need to pause. Took approximately 15 seconds to load on it. Tried it on 3G and the same. The quality is halved (as is the file size when on HSDPA.. think thats what it is) so no stuttering at all.

Beebplayer is great for watching iPlayer (available in the market)

Thanks guys. Reassuring to know it works, as that is what I will be doing 80% of my time.

I've checked streaming via beeb player as well as streaming directly from news.bbc.co.uk - both worked fine on 3G.

Are you guys having a larf? I tried this on my Desire last night and BBC1 played at about 3 frames/sec in VERY crude video.
Right beside it was my iPod Touch playing smooth in high res.
And both were on wifi.
Does this thing really play content properly?

I think we need to wait for the official iplayer app for android, which has already been announced by the BBC.
http://www.neowin.net/news/bbc-announces-news-and-sport-apps-for-iphone-android-and-blackberry

Seeing as the BBC Trust has shelved the News and Sports apps for the time being, perhaps the Beeb will turn their attentions to the Android iPlayer app instead? [SUGGESTION]

To confirm my experience of the beeb player app so far on the desire is flawless on both 3g and wifi connection. obviously quality suffers on 3g but load times were fantastic. I always assumed it was the network speed making it run slow on my G1 but on this phone same network same location runs alot smoother!

Yup. They all work perfectly. Never tried it on my iPhone so can't comment but this works 100%

checked out the beeb player app
yeh, works ok, thought the quality of the vid was relatively poor tho, still...cant complain too much as its free and the only option at the moment.
Not an app i'll be showing of to my former bredren (the iphone users)!

Don't forget that you have to factor in that you're watching it on a screen that is higher res than the iphone - think watching SD content on a standard CRT TV as compared to watching SD on a Hi-Def LCD/Plasma - the SD content will actually look better on the CRT. Same difference between iPhone and HTC Desire. The Desire will come into it's own with higher res material....

For sure,
y'know i miss the ability to just fire up the iplayer mobile site on my iphone or watch tvcatchup but i'm prepared to wait for the goodness to start rolling in on the Desire, it is after all a brand new device

Beebplayer works fine for me here, I tried watching Jonathan Ross which worked ok, but I get a problem whereby the audio and video is slightly out of sync, probably 1/2 a second. Anyone else getting this?

10live.com

anybody here ever heard of 10live.com? it's a chinese website that allows you to view movies and tv shows in crystal clear definition....even on EDGE...only problem is it's in chinese....there's an app that you can download over at that you can put install on your phone but again, the controls are in chinese...using it involves a lot of trial and error but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy....would love to hear anybody's opinion of this thing...
There is no "crystal clear" definition for our tiny 320 x 240 pixel screen and definitely not on EDGE!!! There's only so much you can do with the small bandwidth EDGE offers and the relatively small resolution the screen will display.
not misleading anybody...
I can tell you this much...it's a whole lot clearer than Technology's BLU-RAY player( not knockin' ya Tech...I still love the player and use it everyday) or the TCPMP flash video bundle player(which I also love and use all the time)...and besides , I wasn't trying to sell anybody on this thing...I just wanted to know if anybody's heard of it and/or using it and what they thought of it...it has it's limitations...for one thing there's a lot of movies but you don't actually get a chance to choose just any movie or show...you're limited to what they have on site...but it's a lot and it's updated almost all the time...and again...you gotta look through every link to find a movie you want to watch since the titles are in Chinese...
actually....
actually....what I really wanted to know if there's a website like that in English...and how come we don't have anything like that here in the States...
thats why
Because we have legislation that strangles the American people from enjoying anything.
so....
you tried it?? what do you think of it?

10 Live
It's a great software. I have in both of my Tilt, Blackjack and N95. Great viewing quality and ability to fastward and resume at any point. It's only avaliable in chinese, however it is not that difficult to master it.
Hey,
I tried using Google to translate the page and this is what I came up with as the description:
10LIVE billion from the Shanghai Science and Technology Co., Ltd network of independent development, a cell phone client software for playing audio and video, support online live television, online support feature film programming; have the latest streaming media technology, no waiting, no need to download. More Multi-version landing http://www.10look.com/down.do
10LIVE support cmwap, cmnet wireless streaming media player software! 10 LIVE can be realized in low-speed networks under the condition of smooth wireless streaming video viewing experience!
1. Brand new interface, more rich content collection
2. Built-in programs here, here to watch a one-stop service
3. Automated software upgrades
4. Infinite Playlist
5. For the adjustment and optimization of China's mobile network transmission network
6. To support a variety of networks (including wifi, gprs, edge, Bluetooth)
7. Fluency high
8. High-definition
let me try and get the software
can someone post the link to the software and is it workable at all or it's of no use to us English -speaking peeps?
Here's the .cab. latest version 1.6.1538
it's kinda hard to use at first. with all of the chinese writing and all, but the movies that are english speaking moves. the audio is in english.... but there are chiniese subtitles for them. It runs at abour 15 to 18 fps and rarely buffers, even on edge.
Shouldn't the thread be locked already since the OP leads to a warez site..?

Guy I know where you are coming from, first of all, you are talking about DEFINITION Mobile Video, a ultra clear stream, because of what they have in their stream signal. That why I dont argue with the mind that say, Oh this phone is a 320x240 resolution, like setting a LIMITATION on a LCD screen.(LOL) That because they don't know, if you know something that that they don't, then it cannot be true.(LOL) Here is my favorite DEFINITION mobile entertainment website {IN ENGLISH} with super ultra clear video resolution, http://mobile.ardcorp.tv. The video is ultra super clear because of what's in the video stream signal,{Ultimate Codecs} now see will it set ANY limitation on your 320x240 screen LCD, but you already know that it will not, because you said that it better than my Blue-ray Screen Video Player and you are correct(LOL), because it's a DEFINITION video stream. Their will be more DEFINITION website in the future, take care enjoy Saturn Liberty...............!
Hiya Tech...been to the saturn liberty website but...it's no good if you're not on a wireless connection...too much buffering and choppy video...unless you know a setting that makes it smoother...would love to hear from you....btw...any luck on humyo.com?

[Q] BBC iPlayer on DHD

Hi guys,
I'm sorry if this is a noob question - the DHD is my first Android device. What do you use to watch BBC iPlayer? I've tried going the BBC iPlayer mobile website, it works as Froyo supports Flash Player 10.1 but the resolution isn't very good... I don't want to cause any arguments but I've come from an iPhone 3GS and a 3G before that, and BBC iPlayer is crystal clear on the iPhones. This is just the way it is or is there a sneaky short cut to get some good quality BBC iPlayer streaming?
Thanks in advance.
Got to the market and download...
myplayer
It's free, the resolution is okay, not the greatest, I recommend you "Download" the programs rather than stream them, better downloading over WiFi but will download content over 3G.
the best way imo is: go into internet settings and disable mobile view.
reload iplayer website, which should then load full desktop website instead of mobile, then from within that you can play the videos - i've found it does stutter sometimes but I use the lower bandwidth version which helps , killing all tasks to free a bit of memory also helps! (scroll to bottom left of the page when on video, and click 'lower bandwidth') - even then the video quality is good. (much better than myplayer methinks!)

Agree with the quality but you can't "Download" the content off the mobile site, but for streaming - yes much better.
In saying that the downloaded content is reasonable, I tend to download one or two programmes and then watch them while i am on the bus to work or at work (on my break of course )

Hi, I'm looking at trying to download BBC content directly to my DHD - I know myplayer allowed this, but is no longer up and running (not in it's previous form anyway) - and as far as I can tell the actual iplayer site (mobile and full) doesn't allow content to actually be downloaded.
Two questions, am I right in what I've said above - and if so, is there any other app/method whereby I can download content to then be played at a later date?
Thanks in advance.
This makes me miss beebPlayer. It was such an awesome app while it lasted

BBC Iplayer HD Stutters

Ok I am using the Dophin Mini browser and I have set the User Agent to Desktop. When I go to bbc iplayer website, and go to view a show in high quality mode, it plays ok, but I am getting some stuttering.
When I go to play a HD video from the iplayer website, it is like watching a slide show its that slow.
So how come I can watch 1080p videos on youtube just fine, but I cant watch bbc iplayer videos.
How do you change the User Agent setting on the standard browser, as I believe that is GPU accelerated so I should be able to play bbc iplayer HD videos fine?
I don't think it is related to this site or the user agent that's not "gpu accelerated", the whole browser is hardware supported but there is some streaming players that are more optimized than others on the 3w. For now I only have a galaxy S and with the default browser I can watch 480p youtube videos just fine but I low quality videos stutter on some other sites like engadget, so I guess it's the same thing that happens to you.
And btw what's the point of watching 720p or 1080p videos on a 480p screen ?
Just stick with the resolution that you can watch it will be well enough I think. just my 2 cent

But watching the HD videos I do notice a difference in quality, there is less artefacts. Anyway even playing in standard definition I am getting a bit of stuttering.
And surely all flash videos should perform the same, my theory is because BBC Iplayer is using higher bit rate would that cause problems?
I think its all in your head, but anyways, opinions are opinions. Higher bitrate, maybe, who knows. And the issue for the UA string in the standard browser has been addressed atleast two times, so please search wisely next time. You change the UA string by typing in about:useragent

Ok changed the user agent thank you.
And I have three options for watching iplayer. I can either watch in mobile mode, which significantly degrades video quality. I can watch it in desktop mode on low quality mode, and believe me there is a DIFFERENCE in quality between the two. Or I can watch it in HD mode, but I agree there wont be much difference between HD mode and low quality.
Still getting stuttering even in Low quality desktop mode.
Yeah I've noticed this as well. Kinda surprised as I thought the phone would be able to handle iplayer HD or even standard considering it plays 1080p youtube videos in browser without any trouble. The only one that works in the browser is the mobile version.
I also tried using the iplayer app my phone came installed with and medium and high quality are both a bit laggy whereas low quality is fine
Iplayer is just as juddery using the iplayer app
I would be very interested in finding a fix for this, as the iplayer app is unwatchable on this phone, stuttering constantly. Even when connected to fast wifi / adsl. The quality also seems to be heavy on artifacts.
Why aren't more people complaining?
I've just loaded the KF3 firmware and iPlayer still stutters.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more flak generated by this. Maybe it's because I'm in a small minority of SGS2 owners affected?
Are there owners out there with a completely smooth BBC iPlayer experience?
Not for me ;-<
It's really annoying - anyone know how to solve this ?

[Q] Best video format?

i've never really watched videos on my phones (mostly due to screen size etc) but i figure now that I have the Galaxy Nexus i could watch a few things on it..
What would be the best video format to convert things to? I dropped an avi of a tv program onto it and it worked but it lagged a bit..
I just converted something to an HD mp4 using Permute for Mac, it bumped the filesize up about 100mb but tested it and it runs smooth in QuickPic or PlayerPro but when trying to use the built in video player (to get the true full screen) it plays for a second, stutters, then says it can't be played.. :S
has anyone managed to get moboplayer working ? says i need an arm7 neon codec - found that on their site ... followed instructions but it still wont work
Video playback may be a bit iffy until the apps are updated; one of the Diceplayer mob posted saying that it now supports HD playback for .mkv. They didn't mention .avi but that generally needs less resources than .avi so you could try your avi in Diceplayer.
The general trend in open source video development is towards .mkv, I'm trying that first.
I'd be surprised if much works well right out of the gate. The true beta is when the masses begin tinkering
vplayer seems to play avi nicely
Ill have to try it out.. downloading now
I've got the same question. And I don't mean what other player can I download to play movies. I mean what format can I encode videos in to get them to play in the native player. I did find the article below. I have tried each of these formats with no luck. Anyone know why Android can't play a movie out of the box?
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
And I also tired MoboPlayer with no luck.
pretty much if you use a baseline .mp4 format you will be fine
basically:
h.264 video
LC-AAC audio
no CABAC
and you should be fine up to 1080p these settings work on all my android devices
just set mpeg 4 level 4 and it should take care of it by itself

I have tired those settings on several encoders (handbrake, Adobe Media Encoder, Magic DVD ripper) and still no success. What software are you using to encode? and have you tried the movies on the galaxy nexus? Because I have never had a problem on any other Android devices. Just this one.

I appreciate the feedback but I have two problems with this particular advice.
1 - Have you seen the permissions for that player? Why would a video player need access to my "Phone calls - Read phone status and identity" and "Your personal information - Read sensitive log data"? Really?
2 - Why the hell can't this phone play videos out of the box. <rant>I have, as I suspect a lot of us here do, a fair few friends that I would call iPhone fanboys. One of the biggest gripes I always hear about android is that every time you run into a problem on Android is the best answer is to root your phone and install cyanogen, or go get xxxx app and that will take care of it, or you should have bought this phone instead. So I get this phone and think that finally Android is going to hit the main stream and I can't even play a movie. WTF!</rant>
Like I said, I appreciate the feedback but I am still looking for a way to play a video in the default video player.

no i have not tried on a galaxy nexus yet as that one week delay sim free means i wont be able to have mine in my hands untill at least next week :\,
i use mediacoder to encode videos, cant speak for the GN but ive used it for my xoom, nexus S, desire hd, htc legend and SGS 2 in the past (however SGS2 supported all codecs quite nicely anyway)
according to the android dev site the supported video list hasnt changed so this is quite strange.

Thanks for the info. I will seek out and try mediacoder.
FYI...I got my GN SIM free from Phones 4U. It was not easy though. I went in to a few stores before finding one that would sell it to me SIM free. And I think that I happened upon the manager at the store that did sell it to me. What makes it even better is that I am in the UK on business for a few months and so I can get the VAT back on my way out. Which makes it nearly 90 quid cheaper.
Thanks again,

seems as if media coder works. Though that is one complicated program. You could get lost in those settings for days.

That looks very smooth, I want to use it along with PS3 controller to play ShodowGun.
From the video, it looks like the Media Link can only handle mirroring but not streaming. Consider this cost almost the same as the Apple TV which does have both mirroring and streaming capability, I don't think I'll buy it at the current retail price.
P.S. Mirroring means both screen shows the same content. Streaming means you can play video from your device to the TV while do something else on your phone like web browsing.

I don't think so, unless a developer from XDA implements it because it uses HTCs Sense 4.0 software
im hoping that someone comes out with emulators that stream to tv , so the phone just shows controls

Yeah you can use streaming. You can also launch a film on the One and send it to the TV and continue to use your phone to call someone, send sms, go to network... EVERYTHING
I will add a new video tomorrow or after tomorrow about Media Link with video player
Some HTC Staff person have played to ShadowGun and they said me it's amazing! It's looks like a PS3!!!
+
I have asked to know if I can use it with my DHD and they are not sure because of compatibility with Sense ;(
Was thinking about getting one of these but this video confirms what i thought the experience would be like, i think for the most part it's going to be useless, the guy in the video spent 90% of it looking at the screen on the phone to see where he is poking the touch screen
streaming works, i seen it work at a demo. Here

It's true for games it's not a miracle but when you are lot of people to see a movie or other things (documents, pictures...) it could be so greatful
PS: I have added a new video :

Hey, ive got one question. This HTC Media thing, ist it connected via Ad Hoc Wifi or is it (or MUST it) be built in into your home wifi?
Why this question?
Because my Wifi Signal is very weak at home and therefore the Signals are weak as well. But with an Ad Hoc Connection only between the HTC Phone and the HTC Media thing (that connects to the TV..) you can get a good connection. BUT when your connect to the ad hoc WiFi (to your HTC Media Thing) are you able to surf via Wlan? Or do you have to use 3G?

Just to inform everyone so you don't make the same mistake that I did. The HTC Media LINK and the HTC Media Link HD are very different. The mirroring will NOT work on the HTC Media Link....is works ONLY on the HTC Media Link HD.
It's very ambiguous in all posting and documentation but again I am speaking from experience. The standard HTC Media Link will not mirror the One X. it can only act as a DNLA device.
