Push email on the google mail application? - Desire General

I've set up my gmail account with my htc desire and can access my emails fine using the Google mail application (the one with a red M in an envelope). However, to test the push email function, I emailed myself from another account. On my pc, the email arrived instantly, but my desire didn't notify of a new message till almost 15 minutes later.
Is there a setting somewhere that i might have missed - to enable retrieval of emails as they arrive?

Were you using wifi? Push is really crap over wifi on the desire, the only time I get the push email instantly is when I use mobile data instead.

I was having the same problem and think that it doesnt allow push.
I then set ot up in exchange activesync but im worried about battery life :

Hope that is of some use.

Yeah I always use mobile data too. I hardly ever use wifi unless I'm downloading something big to my phone such as copilot maps.
Anyway, I've set it up with activesync now and push is working flawlessly. Sometimes I get notified of emails before they even arrive on my pc.

hot-fuzz, I'm gonna start tomorrow with a full charge and have active sync running all day. I'll post my findings here if I observe dramatic decrease in battery life.

got it set up on the one i am using and it seems to work just fine. Emails appear on the phone within seconds of arriving at Gmail.
I do sometimes get periods where it is a bit slower though, i think generally when in a bad signal area where i only have 2G. I'm guessing when it has lower signal or only 2G, it may slow down the checking to save battery power or bandwidth or something....

That would be very useful. Thinking of doing it myself.
If i have mine setup for every 5 minutes thats 13 times every hour (including on the hour). I need to know if exchange polls take up more battery than checking 13 times an hour, if i get less than 13 emails an hour via exchange (which i do).
hmmmmm

Be interesting what peoples findings are on battery life and different ways to grab email.

I want to get back to the main topic.
I came from HTC Hero where Gmail push (in the gmail app) worked perfect - also on the 2.1 custom roms.
Not on the Desire it does not push the mails instantley. I don't want to go the way over the HTC Mail app...
Anyone has an idea how to fix it?

[Q] Is it real push mail(Gmail)?

I've setup my gmail account on my desire HD. Sometimes it worked well, I can receive notification just when I received a mail, but sometimes it will be several minutes later, and for now, it didn't show up at all.
I've checked all settings, it's correct. And if I changed some settings at sync&Account options, it'll show push message several minutes later; but after a while, it won't work again.
I never faced these problems when I use Iphone. So could you give me some advice on this issue?
BTW, when I received a message from i.e. whatsapp messenger, the push mail notification will show up at the same time.
My GMail push works flawlessly. Instant notification as soon as I get something. No idea what's wrong with your account/settings though, sorry. The only thing you could mess up is turning synchronization off for the whole device or even only for your GMail account by accident, but you said you checked that...maybe double-check it again, that would be my only idea right now
Always remember you need data connection for gmail to work.

Thanks to all, maybe network problem.
I finally got my notification 30 minutes later. It's work status seemed not stable. And today I got my mail notification much sooner, I mean less than a minute.
Maybe it's network problem, I'm not sure because it's all OK when I used Iphone.

i get exactly the same problem...
i do notice that notifications work perfectly when i am on my wifi..however under cellular data (3G or H) sometimes the notifications can take their time..sometimes it comes immediately..and i know because i set up a notification widget at my work pc and that works flawlessly,
so what i end up doing is to set exchange for gmail!..
and that works perfect..well almost 99% of the time..
for this to work..you set up exchange put your username and no domain..
and server for gmail is m.google.com
set the update for push..and thats it..
now gmail on cellular network gets push correctly...
it sucks cuz i rather use the gmail client...but it will do for me...
so ..am guessing that if it works on wifi ..it might be an issue with the cellular network..i am with vodafone..
I'm with Optus and I get new mail notifications on my phone near instantly over 3G.

I noticed this too when I started using my phone
exchange server seems to be real push, gmail app takes a while to update for me but i like the gmail app more than the standard mail app, maybe theres a better one out there.

[Q] Email is killing my battery!

As stated! Literally 78% of battery usage. I have only just started using email on my phone! Battery was amazing up until using email. I'm on rooted 2.3.3! Could anyone help.
The stock email app blows for exchange connectivity. It constantly hangs on me (the retrieval of email that is). I find when you have an area with a flaky connection (in and out of 3g), you get these issue. With it comes battery problems I've noticed.
I use touchdown for my primary exchange account to solve the lack of incoming email, but it too has battery issues if when it goes in and out of 3g coverage. It was fine until an update earlier in the year (on my old phone, then i noticed the battery issue, still notice on the arc now).
Are you using exchange or just regular email? If you notice your battery draining quick, its probably best to do a force close on it. You should be good to go for a few more hours until it happens again and the cycle repeats. The issue has been around wince 2.1 and I'm not sure why google doesn't get around to fixing it (I'm assuming the mail app at least uses a background service by google as I had the same issue on cyanogenmod since android 2.1). Its a well known issue.
I'm sure this doesn't help, its more of a "Me too".
I hope it gets better for you.
Yea its exchange mate! What a nightmare this is! Work email too so really need to find a work-around for this! I don't seem to have the issue of incoming email, it purely seems to be the battery usage! What a shame. thank you for the speedy reply.
you could try forwarding all your email to your gmail/ googlemail account and use that instead... doesn't solve the problem of replying though.. but you would at least get instant notications of incoming mail, without screwing your battery.
I also have this problem on my Arc - Accounts: Gmail & Exchange. With use of Green Power (Battery Saver which enables data traffic only 1 minute, then 10 minutes data traffic off) this drain-problem becomes WORSE. Before Update to 2.3.3 Green Power really saves some battery, after update 2.3.3 Green Power makes the drain more.
Best solution for me atm is: use only 2G, and don´t use Battery Savers like Green Power. I have to try playing around with exchange refresh settings (Push, once per hour...)
With this my battery drain ist about 2% per hour (no wifi, no gps, no calls... Only phone idle). Not perfect, but best i can get atm...
I use moxier mail for exchange mail. It's a pretty expensive app, but works flawless for me. Maybe there are some free exchange apps too try to search the market. Moxier mail doesn't even site up in my battery usage stats.
Thanks, I will give moxier mail a try.
Hard to justify since I bought touchdown already. I've since turned off push in touchdown and set to 15 minute intervals. Not ideal, its no longer draining my battery.
I've had this same problem for a while after updating to 2.3.3, I think the general solution is to NOT use push email and rather, set a interval (15 minutes or greater).
If you're in an area with scarce connectivity, the email application apparently continues to attempt to sync even with no signal so in that case, maybe a 3rd party email client will be better. Though apparently the popular K9 mail doesn't support active sync =/
Can anyone tell me how to set up email using Moxier? I cannot get it to connect to my exchange account at all, i have tried all possible combinations. My email address is [email protected]. Can you tell me what my domain would be? (previously using stock app i used @broadfieldprimary.herts.sch.uk - this worked fine) What my server would be (using stock app, I used db3prd0204.outlook.com - and this worked fine also. But trying to use Moxier - Paid - I cannot get any connection to this email!!! I'm sorry if this is a basic question, but If anyone could explain the set up I would need I would be eternally greatful!!

[Q] Android mail eating battery! Please help!

This may have been addressed, but a search didn't reveal anything exactly like this. Please bear in mind that I'm an Android newbie!
I bought the Incredible 2 last Thursday. No rooting, nothing weird, still mostly stock. This morning it's running very slow, screen transitions jerky, etc. and even text based email takes minutes to open. I messed around in settings, and notice that Mail (com.htc.android.mail) is using 48% of my battery, more than twice what the screen is using! I force close, and the phone speeds right up, lag is gone, screen transitions smooth but, minutes later, Mail comes back on line and the phone goes to crap.
I've used more that 1/2 my battery in two hours. I notice that the uptime is 1 hr 58 minutes, and the awake time is 1 hr 44 minutes, so I assume that the mail app is also preventing the phone from sleeping.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!
This may sound obvious, but did you try resetting your phone? Turn fastboot off (settings > applications > click fastboot so it is unchecked) then kill mail, and before it has a chance to restart hold the power button, then shut down. The restart option might work, but for things like this I prefer a good old fashioned power down, power up. Anyways, power your phone back on by pushing the power button for two seconds or so. Then see how it goes. This is an error that I have not heard about, but a reset is a universal problem solver. If it doesn't work, tell us what kind of email accounts you have set up (pop, imap, exchange) and how many, and also the settings for checking the mail.
Hopefully the restart will fix it though.
Sent from my Incredible 2 with Xda app
Thanks! My limited Android knowledge told me to try a restart, but I actually didn't know how on the Incredible 2!!
Anyway, the problem went away for a couple hours, then came back!
I use a POP server for my work email, and gmail for personal. I really don't understand this, as nothing has changed since yesterday, but the phone has slowed to a crawl!
Try a third party email app. I don't know of any offhand as I only use gmail on my phone. My gmail account checks my imap account on another host so it's all together, and I can distinguish which account is which on the emails through gmail tags.
Umm I think this will require a factory reset, because you can't uninstall stock mail nor freeze it without root
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
You can temp root, and freeze the stock mail app if that is the way you decide to go. Instructions found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068544. But that sounds more like something faulty with the software, because like I said, I have never heard of that happening before. I would take it back to Verizon, complain incessantly, and point out that you could have fixed it yourself if the phone had an unlocked bootloader
Do you have them set to check mail constantly, push, or are they on a delay? Can you use imap for work instead of pop? I have four accounts set up on mine, including an exchange, and three imap accounts. The fact that it just started happening leads me to believe something broke in the system, though. A factory reset and re-flash may indeed fix the problem. Also, do you have good 3g coverage most of the day? Check your time without signal under battery status in settings. Click on cell standby and it should give it to you. Or are you using wifi most of the day?
Sorry for the rambling questions, just writing stuff out as I think of it. Trying to narrow down what the problem could be.
Thanks, again.
I'm using the mail settings that the school requires, so can't change them. Currently set only to update when the app is opened.
I generally get good cellular reception at work, and I have wifi as well. I've been trying it with or without wifi today, with no changes. I'll try a reset and see if that helps.
I just mentioned trying another app because I don't see these problems and I do not have the stock mail app configured in any way.

I've had the Inc 1 and now the two. I've always turned off the (auto sync) this would require yyou to open your mail and manually refresh or of you use the sync all widget it works that was as well. Seems to save a ton of battery only drawback being you have to manually check it. Ie. No mail notifications. Just a thought maybe you want to give it a shot.
Thanks, everyone. Using a combination of all your advise, the problem is resolved. I factory reset the phone, then installed only my gmail account. This worked fine all of yesterday, so I finally got off my butt and learned how to use gmail to read and send my work email last night. That seems to be working well. I'm still getting email notifications, but gmail is only using 3% of my battery, as opposed to the 48% that Android mail was using.
Still don't know what caused the trouble, but I'm very pleased with the solution.
Thanks again!!
Email battery problem also on Nexus S
I have also the problem that the standard email is consuming the biggest part of the battery - mostly over 50%. I use an exchange account and a pop email, but both not synchronized automatically (manual sync interval), and I do not use them so often - max. one sync a day...
Anyone an idea how to improve this?

Mail Syncing issue

Posting this in general, as I'm not asking a question. I'm stating my findings. Though, feel free to chime in with your experiences.
I'm quite frustrated with mail on my One X. It drives me so insane, I want to go back to my Gnex or iPhone because mail works flawlessly on those. I have read others claiming they don't have this issue, but that's bull. I have had the AT&T version and now the International version and this problem is very real.
I have two accounts set up as Exchange accounts: One is my work e-mail, the other is Gmail. I also have Gmail set up through the native app.
Mail will work fine for a while, then just stops coming in. Today, it was my work e-mail account. I went into Accounts and Sync and there was a "!" on Calendar. It seems like when it can't sync one component of the account, nothing else comes in. I could be wrong. Most certainly, mail stops coming into the Mail app from time-to-time. It's like it just goes to sleep.
It will then inexplicably start working for a while, then stop again. It drives me batty. The moral of the story is, I can't rely on my phone for e-mail at this point, which is kind of a fundamental function of a smartphone. It's even more frustrating when I see the mail come in on every other device and my One X just doesn't get it. If I open Mail, it comes in and sometimes it will work normally for a while after that, but then it stops again.
Really hoping HTC fixes this soon, because it's a serious issue. The only thing I haven't tried is using a 3rd party client, but I don't want to do that because then the mail conversations won't be threaded in my contact history. And honestly, I shouldn't have to.
Also, disclaimer, I am NOT set to Smart Sync on any of my accounts. They are all push.
I can confirm that I am having the same experience and its really pi##ing me off!
Occasionally I get a message stuck in the Outbox as well and then it just keeps on resending the mail. 27 times once!
It also really sucks the battery when it plays up like this.
Always seems to happen after low or no connectivity.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
It happens to me with WiFi here at home. It's not just Mail but also other apps that need to sync like Weather. It's not because of the apps but because even though it shows my WiFi is connected, it is actually disconnected.
I went to another house with WiFi the other day. Perhaps they have different settings... Either way it never happened there. NEVER. I received e-mails right away on my Mail Exchange... Right away. My Weather never missed the update schedule.
Btw, have you enabled the security thing with Mail For Exchange? Something to do with the server. I have only enabled it yesterday.

Is it because of sync setting?
I have 2 work email account, one set as push and another set to auto sync every 4 hours, both works fine no matter i'm on 3G or wifi. Besides, my Gmail using the native gmail app also works fine. The moment i saw a notification on my desktop then immediately the phone will notify me.
This is a very real issue for me, i was just about to make a thread on it myself. I have 2 email accounts, a hotmail and a gmail, neither refuse to sync. I Cant see new or old messages, sent, deleted etc on either account. It did work at one point but then it stopped again for no apparent reason.
100% battery
doesnt work on network or wifi
everything else syncs fine, inc dropbox and weather.

Er... Is it because it is set to sync only when you open the app?

There is definatly an issue on HTC's side.
My exchange mail isnt working well as well. Set it to push...the first few minutes/hours AFTER I turned off the screen pushing works more or less good.
Test mails arrives a few seconds/sometimes minutes after I sent them to my own mail account...but when the phone is idling for some more hours it wont sync the mails anymore...it starts syncing the mails again when I turn on the screen.
Really annoying imo. On gingerbread push mail was working fine..mails arrived seconds after you sent them to the maila ccount that syncs the mails on the device.
I think the issue is smartsync in the settings.apk.
It tries to handle the data connection of the device to give better battery life..but therefore breaks for example proper mail syncing.
On gingerbread you was able to deactivate that feature, it was called "constant mobile data" or similar..if you unckecked it, your mobile data went to sleep after a while when your turned off the screen....on ICS you cant control it yet...Hope htc will fix it for the next OTA.

Well if thats the issue then its poorly designed. I'm seriously considering exchanging for the S3.
Regardless of when it is set to sync, it should sync when i want it to. So if i have manual sync, then when i refresh it i should be able to see new email, correct?

Yeah, that's what it seemed like to me: That HTC was defaulting to smartsync, even when it was set to Push, because it'll start working fine for a while, then stop again. This is really my only issue with the phone currently and it's also one of the most critical. It needs to be addressed sooner, rather than later.
This has been happening to me too. It is not new though. It happened on my HTC Sensation. E-mail would gets stuck in the outbox and tells me it has failed when in fact it is sending it over and over and people end up with multiple e-mails from me. It is extremely frustrating. I also get the exclamation mark when trying a manual sync. It ONLY happens over WiFi and it is not all the time. It happens on different WiFi connections, not just mine and it can sometimes be fine for days. The annoying thing is, I do not know I am unable to receive e-mail until I try sending one and it fails. As soon as it fails I know the problem is back and I have to switch WiFi off.
Glad I am not the only one with this issue. I may end up trying a third party mail app if it isn't fixed.
Yes, this is very annoying.
Happened to me once too, and I had to remove my account and re-create it.
Fixed it - but that's just really a work around for a problem that shouldn't exist...

Battery Drain issue - Exchange service eating up battery

Hi All,
I have had this beautiful device Ascend P6 for more than a couple of months now. Used ROMs B107, B111, B118CN, B122 and currently on B125. I must say that this is a very good device and give me close to 12-14 hours of battery life with not so high usage.
I have configured 2 company emails using activesync on Exchange and have kept the refresh interval at 1 hour with 3 days of sync for both the emails. What bothers me is that when I check the battery usage the Exchange services takes up more than 50% of battery every time. If this can be reduced, I am sure that the battery would rock.
I have attached 4 screenshots with the battery usage config, details on exchange service and my sync settings on both the emails.
Can somebody let me know if anything can be done to make this better, or should I just stay with it.
The amount of transfered data is not really high but depending on the amount of contacts and calender entries it can take a long time to get it synchronized.
If you don't synch contacts and calendar every hour you will encounter more efficient battery drain.
Still the same

I sync with my works exchange and have never had these issues (been on 3 different roms, currently on 122), I have it set to push, days to sync = all, sync email and calendar but not contacts. I only sync with one account though, maybe try removing one account and seeing if that helps, and then re-add and remove the other?
One issue I did have with the stock version was the lack of ability not to set a quiet time, ie weekends and at night, tried a few other apps but didn't like them as much. I just use the profiles at night to turn auto sync off, and at the weekend I just ignore the emails
I get about 2 days out my battery from full charge. I also have it syncing with hotmail, use bluetooth in the car for 2 hours a day, browsing the web etc. So i'd say i'm a mid level battery user.
