HTC Desire - Dust spec! (Photo) - Desire General

So I started noticing a pretty small dust spec on my new Desire, thought at first it might be a stuck pixel of sorts but on closer inspection (much closer!) it is definately some dust.
Below is two images shot of it through a microscope...

...would you replace your handset because of this? I've had it only one day, and you can see it with the naked eye if you know its there (albeit alot smaller! - about the size of a period/full stop)

You put your HTC Desire under a friggin microscope? My advice: Replace it if you really can't live with it, but you should realize that the dust spec is only about a 1/2 pixel in size...

Yes! The reason is that I wanted to check if it was indeed something above the screen or not. With the eye it looks to be a small square, right in the middle of the display. It is quite annoying to be honest, when the screen is one solid bright colour it is quite clearly there (like writing an sms), I constantly find myself trying to wipe it off like the other dust that gets attracted to it but it just stays!
I think I will get it replaced... it's just annoying that I've waited so long for it and now I have to send it back. Got to get the w910 back out the drawer! *sniff*

Have exactly the same problem, T-Mobile are going to do an exchange so no need to be without the phone. Just waiting for stock now.

what kind of camera did you take those photo with?
and this dust cannot be moved if you shaking the phone a little bit?

saquib, good to know I'm not the only one! I got mine from vodadone, will ring them up tomorrow hopefully they will do the same did they agree to replace straight away? And are they sending a replacement or letting you pick another one up from the store? Thanks
Edit: no shaking does nothing its sealed below the screen. In fact under the microscope you can see that it actually sits in a teeny tiny air pocket

I have nothing on the phone yet I have a dust spec on the camera.
I'm not sure weather to take it back or not, it doesn't seem to effect photos.

lol I got a spec of dust but never see it unless I look.

wobbly screen?

Ok, now when I tilt the screen of my touch pro2 up, it has a slight wobble (in the direction the screen tilts, not sideways). Is it normal for a tilt screen device to have this "freeplay" from new?
Hi All
I have the same problem. My screen wobbles too. min 5-7mm "freeplay".
See my post yesterday
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524432
Just had blokey on from the company saying it was normal for the TP2. I must have had a good 4-5mm of play when it was tilted which seemed odd as my Kaiser was (and still is) totally solid with no play at tilt.
It would be really useful if people could post to say whether they have any 'freeplay' or not when tilted.
Thanks
John
yes freeplay here about 10m i would say its very loose

even 10mm is super loose
i think becoz it use different mechanism.
Have logged a call with HTC supprt to get the definitive answer, to wobble or not to wobble. Will update this post when I get a reply
Sent my unit back today and hope to get a replacement soon.
There was something seriously wrong with my unit.

tiinking of sending mine back to be replaced not only does it wobble in tilt but with the keyboard closed if i holed the phone flat of my hand and put slight pressure on the top left corner the screen slide about up just on one side is this normel so the screen can look off set
mine is loose but that is normal as you can't have the screen too rigid in tilt position. also its on hinges and that will have a part to play with the wobble. remember the screen is attached to the body by a ribbon which needs the screen to have that bit of play to take tension off the ribbon. when in tilt position look at the back of screen you will see the black ribbon. wobble the screen and you will see the kink in the ribbon when wobbling. now imagine having a really taut screen and the pressure that would be exerted on that ribbon. wobble is acceptable as it plays an important role! thats my opinion. i have a kaiser/tytn 2 and the screen is very wobbly and loose.

I second that Shingers,
My Kaiser became very loose after about one year.
The Rhodium looks to have a much more robust design though and yes there should be some amount of free play.
Time will tell how good the redisgn of the tilt mechanism is though.
Cheers,
Beasty

thanks for the input guys,
John, let us know what's the official position on this. Apart from the wobble device is working fine so I decided to keep it, it's not a deal breaker for me - i operate it while flat anyway and it stays tilted when put on the desk.
The looseness is like, when you tilt it and shake back and forward slowly, it eventually goes down in 3 shakes. Using the touchscreen when tilted is impossible unless you have a finger behind it.
I don't know, all the reviews are praising the stiff tilting mechanism of TP2 and online videos show people applying a bit of pressure on the device to tilt the screen, mine is not like that, that's why I started the thread.
It did say it's the first batch here in UK on the MFDirect website, so could be an early flawed version.
Will do, still waiting to hear. Just think its a bit disapointing if this is a part of the design as (and I really don't want to take anything away from the brilliance of everything else about the phone & how much people, including me seem to love it) it makes it feel, well cheap.....which as you say was the opposite of the reviews the phone has got from everywhere else.
Maybe mine was a lot looser than others have experienced? maybe I'm just a fussy ba***rd, don't know?
MPD won't replace it as they say it is normal, I'm waiting for it to come back then I'll send another email with a couple of snaps/video to HTC to get the definitive view. Will keep you up to date.
And waht about this,it was a little hard for me to explain it corrctly,so i'v take a picture
is it normale ?
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/4057/tp2a.jpg
yes i think it is. Its the part that slide's out and also can be tilted. That means that it isn't attached to the bottom of the device and i guess that is wat causes the problem. I also have that problem a bit.
When i slide the device out and NOT tilt it it looks perfectly straight, but when i tilt the screen it wobble's a bit but i guess thats normal to..
same problem ..... same wobble .... still i love it
Thanks guys so i will love more my tp2
The definitive view part 1
Hi all
HTC have replied to my first query. Posted below. Basically there should be no looseness/wobble. I'll speak to them and MPDirect and see what happens next.
'Thank you so much for contacting HTC Technical Support Team.
Regarding your request, kindly note that the symptom you stated (the screen when tilted was loose on its hinges and wobbled back and forth by a few milimetres ) is not a normal symptom. the Screen should be firmly in place.
For further assistance please don't hesitate to contact us on our hotline < 0845 890 0079 > or visit our website at www.htc.com .
Respects & Regards,

preventing dust intruding from the camerahole

Even if the TP2 is very nice, I got mine last week that stupid camerahole bothers me and the TP1 was the same.
So I taped that hole (look at the picture)
Or does someone else got a better solution for it?
P.S:
I can still take nice pictures

To be honest, I don't give a thing about the camera that doesn't even has a flash
@gcheok
What's the point with the screen protector
I don't want dust in the back of the phone.
Agreed. Having a protector in the lens is only useful if you're planning on jabbing sharp objects through the hole in the back cover.
A much more effective solution is to cover the hole itself, thus preventing the back of the phone from filling up with dust.
Seems like a bit of a weird thing to do on HTCs part, though I can understand it. On my TyTN2 I actually took the back cover off to take photos as the "lens cover" was so obliterated and caked with dust.

Screen gap

I read about screem gap but i was unsure what exactly was meant. I just took a closer look and found out that there is a tiny gap between my screen and phone on top in which dirt fills in and it pisses me off. I havent dropped my screen once and if i push the top left part of my phone i can hear a sort of "click".does that make my phone faulty? Im really annoyed vy the dirt that fills in... Apart from rhat phone has no problems.

send it back. that is what i am doing. left hand side of the phone between the screen and the plastic you can see dust getting inside there to. plus if you press the left hand side tad hard you can hear it creaking as well. i called HTC to see if they could replace it for me straight away without sending it for repairs..waiting for an outcome tomorrow...if they say no i will just send it for repairs and hope they find the problem and either fix it or replace it then...i know it will drag for a week but at least that way you know one way or the other it will get fixed...
i was going to say if it does not bug you then leave it..but you sound just like me that even though the phone works fine it will bug you cause you know it is there
should i go to my provider or directly cpntact htc? And just to understand it better. Gaps are not supposed to be there, am i right?

It amazes me some of the reasons people will find to return an otherwise perfect handset. Considering the amount of serious problems floating about this phone, I don't think a creak or 1mm gap between the bezel and screen constitutes a return. Get over it and enjoy the phone.

Ive heard that the one x was made in 2 different countrys taiwan and china... china being the worst built ones buttt I must have a really faulty dhd. I've had it for 10 months now and my screen moves, doesn't fit right on the phone as there should be a lip round it but isn't my speaker isn't straight so is sloping. Looks like the cnc machine hasn't cut it right. Power button is really recessed too far in..... I think a little sqweek is nothing to really worry about if the screen falls out then ya I'd send it back.

well that is what worries me about the whole damn thing..if it gets to hot to soon and in two months down the line the screen actually does fall out
TBH ive just checked mine and it does have a slight gap with lint building up already (bare in mind ive had this phone 2 days) Also have the yellow blotch on the screen AND a dead pixel. This is by far the best phone ive ever owned...But my word these little niggles are grating on my moobs! Ive never had to send a phone off to a repair centre before but im not really willing to put up with the problems the phone has (however ridiculously small they seem to some ) You expect some software issues in an early batch, but dead pixels, discoloured screens, gaps occuring out of nowhere between the screen, its a bit much really! Im gunna have to get it sent off soon i think, gutted!

Do you even realize how big 1mm is?!!!! Get a ruler and see please....
I doubt even a blind person could enjoy a phone with a gap big as that. You would not just see this, but also feel.
I have a gap that's about 0,1-2 mm big (measuring with paper, which is about that in average I think 0,1 till 0,3 I think but also not sure) and its around the whole screen on both sides of the ring.
Ugh...1mm...
But seriously guys, how big are the gaps it makes you return it?
I mean should I return it with 0,1 mm ? (maybe less) seen a bigger gap on SGS 2.

Purple tint/noise on camera

Has anyone else noticed the infamous purple noise problem on their Verizon Ones in low light? There's a giant thread about it here in the international variant's section. It gets especially bad when you take a picture in total darkness or cover the lens entirely. If your phone has one of the defective sensors, the whole screen will turn bright purple.
Also curious to see if there's a certain batch of camera sensors behind this. If you have this problem, could you browse to /sys/android_camera/sensor and post the text inside? Mine says "st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-05-03".
Before anyone suggests that this is a software problem, there are a quite a few units that don't exhibit this issue and show perfectly black images in the dark, so I'm more inclined to believe this is a hardware defect.

Wow, that sucks.
I'm considering the same thing, though I'm not facing such an issue. I want to know if this camera problem is widespread to see if it's worth exchanging; it would be awful to go through the whole exchange process and wind up with the exact same problem on the replacement. And it would especially suck to lose your bootloader unlock for nothing...

My dad also has the HTC One from Verizon (got it a week later). His camera exhibited no such issues. I am going to try messing with his again tomorrow.
Its definitely a widespread issue though as you can see on that XDA post. I've also been following that since I got the phone. There is someone who thinks it might be a software issue and can be fixed by flashing libs. He is working on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45158495
I am just afraid of returning it and getting another headache such as dead pixel(s), chassis gaps/scratches, or anything else like that. I am trying to determine if I could live with it. I don't take many low light shots, but it will suck when I do.
When did you get your phone? It sucks that I have to decide by tomorrow!
EDIT: My camera pretty much does the same thing as shown in this pic (For others who may not be aware what we are talking about)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45298491&postcount=966
I got the phone about a week after release. Not sure that means much though, they seem to be randomly using old leftover parts to build the phones (according to the serial number, mine was built in July).
Can you post a picture of the purple stuff? I've seen other threads on this - in one case it did look like classic low-light issues that plagued certain Dincs, but another guy's pictures seriously did not look like digital noise to me - looked like an oily smear, maybe a manufacturing defect.
st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-06-20
Mine doesn't have the issue and it was purchased in the release day.
I had this same problem. I went in to verizon and showed the guy and we went through 3 replacements before he swore it was a software issue. Then I showed him that covering up the camera lens on their display model showed a plain black screen, while the replacements were showing that purple/pink tint. Here's an album with a couple of pictures of what it looks like.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m93o47ugxapos4v/hB6YN6kw-n/HTC One
My camera does the same.
I took it to the VZW store today but didn't have my ID nor did I bring the box with me.
Planning on going back tomorrow.
They told me they'd replace the phone for me so we'll see what the new one does.
Will report back!
BTW, nice car Frankie1588 if that's yours
Mazda RX-8?
For reference - here's a pair of low light shots, one with night mode on and one without. Definitely worth replacing because this phone sees better in the dark than I do, and that's pretty cool - this scene is nowhere near as bright as the pictures make it look, and night mode gets rid of speckling artifacts entirely.
So just going into the Verizon store, you guys were successful in getting replacements? How hard was it to sell that the phone had an issue?
guess I'll test the camera as soon as fedex drops off the phone tomorrow. I'll just call if its bad and make them overnight me a new one.
so if you take a shot in low light without the flash on, and it comes out fine, your camera is ok?

I just went into the store today and they took my word for it when I described the problem.
Said they have been having a lot of people come in for the same reason.
Since I used another line's upgrade they said I couldn't swap out in the store.
But because of the device still being under warranty, they're shipping me a new one
And I just have to ship my current one back. I seriously hope this new one doesn't have

I got mine with the Edge program (don't judge me), and they were very easy to deal with in store. I just told them that it's an awesome phone, and the camera wasn't working. I showed them that it wasn't working by just covering the lens with my wallet. It showed that pink/purple tint on the screen. We went through three phones before we found one that didn't have that when covering the lens. I would definitely take yours back because the lens, when not taking in any light, should be completely black.

I got mine via edge to, 5 months after getting the note 2 on my upgrade. I'll either pay it off or trade it in at half paid off.
I think some of y'all might be mistaken on the camera.
You need to take a picture in pitch black room, not just cover the camera with your finger. Mine was able to draw light in through my finger, but when I went into the bathroom with the lights off, I got a solid black picture.
Just like a flashlight shines red through your finger, so to some extent can natural light.

I completely agree about not covering it with your finger, light still gets in. You can definitely find an object to cover up the lens, though. The display model at the Verizon store was black when covered with my wallet, but my phone was showing that tint when covered.

I completely agree about not covering it with your finger, light still gets in. You can definitely find an object to cover up the lens, though. The display model at the Verizon store was black when covered with my wallet, but my phone was showing that tint when covered.

then I would definitely get a replacement. Mine was solid black. Also don't have any gaps along the top, or scrapes, imperfections that I can find.
Only thing I noticed was the white band at the top was not quite flush. Have to really look to notice. I'm considering myself lucky.

yea I got lucky as well with the build quality.
I am hoping the same with camera.
I just tested in pitch black.
taking pictures with out the flash on obviously left me with a black picture.
with flash everything was great.
am I do now believe my camera is ok?
or did I test wrong?
thank you in advance.

[Q] Does your device creak?

I got my note 4 days ago. At first everything was ok, but yesterday I noticed my device is terribly creaking. Almost every time I touch the back it sounds like the plastic would break a little bit (Although I don't think it would actually break).
Do you have the same issues? Or should I sent it back and get a new one, since it's really annoying me...?
Thank you )
Nope.

Mine creaks a little in the bottom right corner. Everything else is fine. I think it's the plastic back giving a bit. I had this on the Nexus 10 as well.
Creaking is for Hollween not for my Tablet!

Yes, When I held the tablet with my left hand to touch the screen with my right it creaked like a rock band with bad music! Geeish.....the silver chrome or whatever the material is wasn't tight and it just bend. I returned it right away. I really didn't want to return it. However, I paid full price and not second hand money so I expect the performance to be right, that means no noise. When listening to music or watching a movie it seems as if someone was moving around and that can be pretty annoying. I tried holding it different ways with no change. So back it went. Let Samsung sell. This I know imagine you trying to sell it to the next person, what do you think they might say and how much will the value go down?

Yes, As soon as I opened the package, I noticed the bottom right hand corner was creaking an popping. It is not like I was looking for it. That made me investigate if the rest of the trim was doing the same. If you put your mind into into it, you can get some creaking from other ends of the trim but nothing like the bottom right hand corner. Every time I pick it up, it is annoying me so much that I feel I should take it back. I am not sure the guys at PCWorld would accept this as a reason for full money back or replacement claim. I do like the tablet, but do not want a noisy plastic in my hands.
Is this enough of a reason to ask for a replacement?

Sadly I dont think it is (pure guess so dont take my word for it) BUT I can 100% say that your Tablet will have a little bit of lightbleed along the bottom and sides....this alone is a good enough reason for them to accept and exchange - Good luck.

Hi,
Could you please elaborate on the light bleed issue. How do you determine if you have a light bleed and what is the significance of it.

Put screen britghness to 100% and open this http://www.net-tracker.net/android/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/black_bg_1024x768.png, make sure it covers the entire screen inc notifications part and then switch off your lights in your room and you will then see light bleed, Its nothing major and common on LCD'S but it is a valid reason for a return/exchange.
I had lightbleeding on my first note but I found it to be acceptable however on my 2nd tablet I found the bleeding to be excessive and off putting so I got a refund from John Lewis,
Anyways this thread should give you an idea too - best of luck :good: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554094

same here
Got mine 2 weeks ago, and it sounds like a bowl of snap, crackel, and pop, sitting on bubble wrap.
If i look at it wrong, it makes noises. I might take it back and have them look at it... see if that warrants an exchange.
Sent from my freekin huge Note 10.1 ?

If your one is not creaking then this definitely should be a rightful exchange claim for all those unfortunate to pick up badly put together tablets.
I am even considering getting my money back and going the Apple way. Excellent build quality, and I know that because I got some for the kids.
yeah maybe idk. Sammy is also known for build issues lately so you have to really inspect before you take home. The Note 3 home button is all wonky and wobbly on a lot of units.

Sorry for the question, but what is "idk" in your post?
Having a creaking case, would that get worse in terms of speading all around the tablet's trim?
Any experiences but no guesses please!

"IDK" means "I Dont Know".
I guess if the creaking was coming from say a loose glass to the digitizer i think it could be something that spreads. Since if the glass isn't glued down well enough i could see slight dust getting in there and causing more separation over time. I doubt this is the case as you'd see bubbling at the edges if that was happening.
