Hi guys, I'm having a few issues taking photos with the Desire - I just can't seem to get used to using the trackpad button as the shutter button. I've got really big thumbs and I'm finding it difficult to keep the phone steady enough for the phone to refocus and take the shot after I hit the button.
Does anyone have any tips for taking decent shots? I'm so used to using the shutter button on my N900 (half-press to focus then full-press to shoot).

Maybe this can help: enable "self-timer" in the camera settings and set it to 2 seconds.
That will give you a moment to steady after you hit the button.
Not a problem for me, but I think that smile detection option doesnt work!

smile detection? you mean face detection? it works for me and follows the face around and maintains focus. I did not see the smile detection option though. must check.

You could try the way I occasionally take photos with the Desire is to cradle the Desire in the right hand with your middle & ring finger on the back of the cover and your index finger on top and little finger below, both arched round slightly so it looks like the phone slots into your hand and then use the screen to take photos with your left index finger by holding down on the screen for a couple of seconds, it'll focus then take the photo, that way you should get a steady shot as your right hand is steadying the phone.
Best way I have found is to use the focus point select, by placing a finger on the point you wish to focus and just keeping it there. It prevents you from really moving the phone while pressing a physical button. It will focus and then snap. Give it a shot. Excuse the pun.

The idea is that when you take a picture of a scene with a person on it (i.e. a person with, say, mountains in the background), you would mostly want the person in focus. The face detection basically finds people for you and automatically focuses on them by default, rather than whatever is in the center of the frame.
Its so you dont get this age-old problem of center focused shots...

Are you kidding me... This is AWESOME!!! I was annoyed that sometmies no matter how careful I was some photos would blur due to camera shake. There is obviously no image stabilization in the software etc. This is not such a problem on bright days with a very fast shutter speed, but indoors or dull weather will often blur very slightly on a touchpad button press, no matter how delicate you are.
I also found you do not need to press and hold the screen! you just need to press for slightly longer than a tap and then let go and hold your camera steady with both hands. perfect images. a tap to focus, a short press to take a shot. you will figure out how long I mean by experimenting, but its literally just a bit longer than a tap and it will focus and take a shot itself, you can just hold it with two hands.
I was so impressed I uploaded two images. First one is a button press while being very delicate and trying to get ZERO blur.
Second is the same image with a 0.5 second press and then holding the camera with both hands. Spot the difference!!!

I've noticed that this method takes slightly darker shots, but they are much sharper and have more clarity. I'm ok with that. A sharp dark shot can be brightened, but a blurred bright shot is harder to deal with.

Dont know if anyone else has noticed but having a plastic lens on the battery cover makes the picture lose sharpness and maybe even blurry.
Try it your self take a picture with and without the battery cover on, And yes the lens was perfectly clean inside and out when i done the test
I was thinking about drilling the lens out on the battery cover. I know theres the chance of then geting dust in there but my Touch HD never had a lens
I still think the Touch HD was beter at taking pictures in full sun light though

I know what you mean. I think in theory the lens protecting back cover should not affect the image at all. It's too close to the lens to have any affect on focus (blurred or sharp) so once its clear it won't affect the light getting to the sensor. even a small finger mark or dust on this cover should have negligible effect on the sharpness or blurriness of a photo.
Have you tried the above screen press technique to take clear sharp shots with the back on. They should be just as sharp as without it on. I have not tried though to be honest so I'll take your word for it. I don't think I'd drill the lens cover out unless there was a massive improvement.
When i done the test i did use the optical track button, so i will try again with the screen press method.
I only done this test because i removed the battery cover to clean both side of the lens and once clean i held it up to the light and though it looked hazy or not as clear as i thought it should be.
I agree with what your saying although if the plastic isnt of high quality wouldnt it have some impack on picture quality? That was my reasoning behind possibly drilling it out

Could anyone provide series of photos taken by HTP2? I'd like to compare them with other devices.
More people would be welcome so we can compare even pro2 between themselfs. I've already met one pro2 with blurred and shaded camera. I just dont want to believe all those cameras are so bad.
It would be nice if you took photo in different conditions. Like outside, in the dark, of the text, of the colorful scene, inside the building with poor light conditions etc etc.

You can actually make the Kaiser camera ten times better by simply taking off the back cover when taking pictures or video. For some reason the plastic on the camera cover is dingy and blurs it a little.
Some people have actually removed that one plastic piece from the cover or just drilled a tiny hole, personally I couldn't do that.

I know, I usually quit the cover... and the quality is MUCH better than the ones taken with pro2.... I hope another samples with other configurations will be better, I wont buy a new phone with worse camera than the one I have!!

Well maybe its just the same issue, the backing cover lens. Its supposed to be a 3.2 mega pix.

just an FYI all, i didnt adjust anything. not even sure my pics are set to fine quality. I will check the settings and report back
EDIT: *** ok yup, had all the default settings with no adjustment to any of the lighting
I didnt change the settings in device. I changed contrast in Irfan view just to see if images may look better.
Lets admin that camera sux lot in HTP2. I just want to insure myself that the better result may be achieved by the software changes (like change of contrast for example).
On almost all photos i've seen there is some kind of gray curtain. Because I want to use camera in my next device I was thinking about it and i decided that its enough for me that photos looks good in the device when showing to friends. I dont need extra quality as compact camera could provide.
I was wondering what the video recording capability is on this phone. I'm told it's capable to record in 640*480 resolution these days. Is it any good (crisp / fluid) or choppy and.. well.. reasonably useless like the recordings my P4350 takes (taken into account that that phone records into the size of a poststamp)?
Bottom line: will I be using the feature to take my holland's funniest video and win 10 eurocents?

I've determined All this without even testing out the camera functionality myself... Imagine that!

Here you can check out this sample video (from pocketnow's review)... Looks pretty good to me (and yes, it's in 640x480 )... It's not some fast moving test or something, but in general the video looks good...

Tell me about it!
Admittedly this is the same across the board for all commercially available WM 6 series devices at the moment but it still stinks.
I am hoping this will change when Snapdragon processors are released as this is said to have at least 720p 30fps playback and record capabilities.
How is the screen, like when you Shake the Xperia X1 during taking a picture the screen won't lag.
A.t.m. on dutty's rom, he has done the same. when shaking the phone while in camera, the camera screen does not lag or get any delay.
Is this also the same on Touch Pro 2?
I'm considering getting a TP2 and sell my Touch HD.

Did the phone put the time stamp on it ? is able to be turned off ?
If you want a qwerty slider phone that is this slim then you have to accept that you cannot get a video camera into it
Phone is always a compromise between size and features and functions. Think about the size (the thinness of the slider part) and then compare it to the phones you say have good camera. They're a lot thicker.
Someday the technology will go further but this is what we have now.

i come from a photography background. classical training (dark room, color and bw), plus many years with very expensive canon dslr equipment. point being i have a penchant for photography and a good idea for image quality.
i wasn't expecting the quality of my G11 from this phone but i was definitely expecting better than what i am getting. pictures at night or in restaurants come out horribly overblown. most places pictures come out blurry and/or very soft focused.
i've seen posts blaming it on the camera software (sense). can the software really be crippling the hardware that much? is there an alternative camera software or a fix to the existing software?
has anyone successfully ported the CM6 camera over to sense?
how are you all getting alone with your "8MP" camera?

no i haven't. i'm not changing roms for the camera. but i'll look into moving the camera app over from the 3.30 rom. see if it works?

If you're using the older stock ROM you can flash it over top of the one you have and only wipe the dalvik & cache, that way you keep everything as is. If not you should be able to just copy the camera stuff. There's more to it then just the .apk file though, someone posted a list of changed files and I believe it showed some of the camera files in the system/lib folder changed also.

yeah but it's a phone that bragged about being able to capture bleeding colors thanks to its 8mp camera. if i'm getting the same image quality as my samsung code was getting me, it's dissappointing
the image quality problems we're experiencing i think are due to software limitations. hence why pictures supposedly come out better on CM6...

What's the deal with people saying that their camera took better pictures once the outer lens cover cracked, and was removed? Any truth to this?

I'm testing out VIGNETTE for taking photos.. so far it looks better.. I dont like the fact that it creates its own gallery....

My lens cracked so I took the cover off and replaced it with a custom piece of clear scotch tape. Pictures look better now than they did before ( I'm serious). Here's a close up.

I agree with the OP. Yes it's only a cell phone but if anyone has used the camera on a BlackBerry Bold 9650, or a Tour for that matter you'll see the difference is night and day.

To be fair, yes, this is a phone... But, the marketing (go figure) for the Evo hyped up the camera abilities as HD, 720p video. This phone does neither well. While they have made improvements in the coding since the release, this camera struggles immensely with jitter, poor low light capture (in which most cases the flash seems to wash everything out), and horrible audio quality during video.
Lastly the compression used is awful, and here's why I don't care how many megapixels the silly sensor captures, at the end of the day compression rules all.
95% of my pictures come out grainy and crappy, particularly while using the digital zoom. The software just cannot cope.
I started a thread about this very issue a couple months back, unfortunately the devs don't seem to view this as a task worth undertaking, and after the little amount of research and specs I've seen this may be because the cam sensor used sucks as badly as the software controlling it. It just doesn't do low light well at all. I still believe there's hope if someone with the programming stones who also shares a love for good photography steps up to the challenge.
Otherwise, we probably won't have a good camera until the Evo 2.

And just to prove I don't think the hardware is to blame check this out, this camera can shine under the right conditions. This photo is fully stock, not retouched in any way, and was taken using one of the various sense roms floating around mid summer. If we could get the low light shots, and video on par with this, I think we'd be in good shape.
The second photo is in the dark but shooting a bright frame, up close...
I don't think they are bad at all, they just rarely turn out like this.
I noticed that it takes 5-10 times to manually focus before taking a shot to get a sharp looking picture.
It's as if the algorithm for autofocus is broken, and only occasionally does the camera focus properly.

Me too. I'm always tap tap tapping the screen, and swearing at it. By then I've usually missed the shot I want to take.
I recently discovered this on a white lumia 900 and wonder if this is normal or if I need to get my phone exchanged.
The camera always gives a slightly discolored halo in the middle of a picture taken without a flash. I took a picture of a blank white wall and the effect can be seen clearly in the piture. (I adjusted the brightness a bit) (since i cant post links)

Also, it doesn't take really good pictures in the dark. One weird thing that I saw is in this picture below. I took a picture with the phone in complete darkness and then opened the picture on the phone. The screen looks black but then when you pinch-to-zoom and increase the picture size, all sorts of weird dots and stuff appear and also can be seen if you auto-correct the final image using any picture software. I clicked the picture of the phone screen in a dark room.

Lulz. Welcome to the world of photography. You have discovered two things that have been discussed in photography for well over a century vignetting and noise/grain.
I have a $300 NONZOOM lens that if used on a $3000 camera will show vignetting if you shoot it wide open (f/1.4). Not sure why anyone would think the tiny lens on a mass produced phone handed out for free would be immune to that.
A guy bought a DSLR for $6,000 new and put a $1,500 lens on it. This is what he found...

The Lumia 900 is an awesome phone but it has to obey the laws of physics. You can't cram eight megapixels into a space the fraction of the size of a fingernail and expect to get noise free images. That's why miniaturization and the megapixel race are an anathema to good photography. I'll put it to you this way one of the greatest photographers ever prefered to shoot his work with an 8x10 camera. That's right a camera with film that measured 8x10 per a frame. Now you are shooting in terrible lighting conditions with a sensor that is a fraction of the size of your fingernail. My question is what did you expect?
Here's a little primer on sensor sizes...
For professional photography Canon APS-C is really the minimum. Sigma Fovean can be used but it is a very unique technology. Four thirds cameras take some decent pictures as well but that is about the limit. FYI see that tiny green box on the left? The sensor you are critiquing is a fraction of the size of that. Also when I really want to take I nice shot I use a medium format FILM camera. It's negative is even bigger than the medium format sensor on that chart.
Arizona Highways is considered to be at the pinnacle of photographic magazines. It usually only uses images taken with FILM cameras like this...
So bottom line is that vignetting and digital noise are present to some degree in EVERY camera phone. Are they at an unacceptable level in your particular unit? I don't know. I would have to know a lot more about your testing methodology and see similar sample pics taken under the exact same conditions by a variety of phones. Your phone may be defective or you may just be one of those special people that really pays attention to the quality of photographs. Some people for whatever reason are just really tuned in to what looks good and what looks bad. I love showing people like that my pictures. They can actually appreciate them or at least tell me what looks bad.

Yeah so do people with three thousand dollar cameras. It's all a matter of degree.
Unfortunately, the camera on this phone sucks. I have one and it takes horrible pictures 90% of the time. 10% of the time you will be amazed at how great the pictures look, the rest of the time you will be disappointed.
Not sure how how Nokia screwed it up this bad.

Also, it doesn't take really good pictures in the dark. One weird thing that I saw is in this picture below. I took a picture with the phone in complete darkness and then opened the picture on the phone. The screen looks black but then when you pinch-to-zoom and increase the picture size, all sorts of weird dots and stuff appear and also can be seen if you auto-correct the final image using any picture software. I clicked the picture of the phone screen in a dark room.

Let me see if I can give a simple explanation..
For your halo effect or as you can see its yellowish in the middle a been a noted problem in the lumia phone ( Samsung SGS2 forums are filled with similar problems what they call as the pink spot).
Apparently the phone might have a problem of adjusting the white balance and hence giving the yellowish tint.
Solution : I would try and see if you can manually adjust the white balance on the camera setting and see if it makes a difference to you as people have seem to found better results then the auto settings.
Regarding the Second problem as mentioned above its Noise which you probably get with low light photography.
SOLUTION : Try using flash with lower iso if possible, The higher the iso the more the noise, the lower the iso the less the noice will be and also make your pictures more darker, best to use flash.
Just my humble thoughts... and I dont have the lumia yet, but hoping to purchase one soon.
There are quiet a number of bugs in the lumia 900 which nokia has acknowledged and will be addressed in future updates

If your Lumia 900 is taking "horrible" pictures 90% of the time it is either defective our you aren't using it correctly.
There are several adjustments on the camera. I suggest playing with them. I definitely change the color balance depending on the lighting conditions and I mess with the scene settings as well.
When you say the pictures are "horrible" what are you comparing them to? Frankly I've never been impressed with the low light capability of sensors smaller than Canon APS-C. Especially if you decide to go pixel peeping the way the OP did. I pixel peeped an image from a point and shoot camera years ago... I never did it again. You see all kinds of things you don't really want to know about.
I've been using camera ZOOM as my main camera app and I'm finding that almost all my pictures are blurry, even if the objects are stationary!
Has anyone else experienced this? For those people, have you found an app that fixes this problem?

Experienced it only with camera zoom on an older phone where all other apps were fine.
That said, camera zoom works fine on my razr i, but I prefer stock.

I don't use Zoom but I noticed the same thing. I have only owned the phone for a a few days so it may be more user error than hardware issue.

yup. worst camera ever. I don't take nearly as many pictures as I use to now that I have this and not an HTC device anymore.

ICS Auto Focus was jack up on mines.
It never really focused all the way, if it did, right before shutter press and taking picture it would refocus and take the blurry pic.
But after I installed JB on there that problem is gone. Though to take good images you still have to play with Apature and Exposure.
Also make sure u know what the lens can and cannot do. You are playing with only a cheapo Cam.

-I normally try not to use Flash. (It gives the image a wierd Bam There is light somewhere look)
To compensate for that, Try to use Exposure + to make it brighter. The exposure also helps if its too bright to darken it like wearing sunglasses.
-Make sure the back lens area is clean (Oil streaks or finger prints or face fat, will result in blurry pics or Twilight Vampire like Glow to everything)
Use a dry soft cloth to clean or Soft toilet paper works great. Dont use ur Girlfriends or any type of Tissue with some sort lotion build into it.
Because that will have the same effect as oily finger prints.
-Focal Length, Figure it out (The closest distance ur cam can go to the object or subject before it goes schizophrenic trying to focus)
I found out that my Razr M Likes it about at the 4 inch mark, getting to about 3 inches it cant focus on the EyeDrop bottle.
Distance shouldn't be an issue just the object gets super small hahaha and i may not be able to focus on the desired object no more.
-Auto Focus and Manual Focus tracking I think thats they are called (Sometimes the Cam tries to focus on the wrong item like background instead forground)
The object blend in the back ground too much or cam wants to focus on something else,
tab the area where u want it to focus.It may take a few times before the cam surrenders and takes ur tab as the focus point.
-Shutter speed (Our cams aren't DSLR or High end Point and shoot)
Don't shake too much and try to stay steady to take the pic, After u hear the Click wait a bit before you move. Depending what you have running in the background it may take longer to save or process and the click SOUND maybe coming before the actual shutter CAPTURE so when moving, it may cause blurriness bc u moved while it took a pic, the digitial sound maybe off sync.

I believe it has preamp outs for a sub amp, but no input for a cam.

Can't really expect them to support other party cam setups. You could rig up an IP cam back there. There are a number of apps on Play that should be able to receive it.

My main concern with a setup like that would be screen burn-in on our AMOLED display. I used my GNex in a powered car dock with the screen always on, and I could clearly see the giant Pandora "P" burned into the middle of the screen from my car-home application.

Why would you need to keep the display on all of the time? Of course, if the clamp doesn't allow access to your power button, then it is a pretty big fail for Android.

If there was an option to dim the display or even go to sleep, with a way to quickly wake it up (Car Home Ultra recently added this feature) then I'd be fine with that. Otherwise, what kind of hoops would you have to jump through to skip/pause/change source/etc with the display turned off, all while avoiding an accident?

Well, I am assuming they thought this out, and ran everything by the lawyers as liability can be a big thing with something like this. Of course, it may be half ass (with no one thinking about sleeping/waking the phone) and just put up a universal disclaimer every time you power it on, much like my Eclipse "user interface from hell" in-dash nav head.
Guess will just have to wait and see.

Yeah, too light on details to know at this point. But I don't think it would really matter as much on non-AMOLED phones. I'm just wondering if this is tailored more for Xperia phones. If I had all the standard playback controls as physical buttons I'd probably be happy with it. It does look like it might have physical volume buttons, but I can't really tell what the others are for in that tiny pic.

The buttons on the front are source, voice, and volume, and maybe dual purpose (long press) as there are other labels printed next to them. It also comes with a remote for when the phone is not docked.
It is tailored for Sony models as it has the magnetic charging port for them in the cradle. I just hope it was not designed for always on screens. That would be a waste.
i will never, ever, ever ,ever EVER buy another sony product again, much less another head unit. i bought one last year that was 1/2 assed at best, and the firmware updates were pathetic. Plus when everyone complained in the forums, they buried the car audio forum in miscellaneous products with all the dead proprietary tech they abandoned. STAY AWAY
this head unit has potential. i've always wanted to do something with my N7, but this is a close second, and portable.

i'm wondering if this thing can be modified to fit a tablet!? at the end of the day, it's just the mounting mechanism that gets in the way.
I have yet to find a tablet that isn't polarized at 90°. That means it is un-viewable in landscape when driving with polarized sunglasses (which I always use).
Thankfully the Moto X is polarized at 45° and viewable in both portrait and landscape.

good point. the 7 is def polarized at 90.
i seemed to have had a similar problem with my old DROID1/2/3/4 lines. once i added an anti-glare screen protector, it seemed to correct the issue. i wonder if the same could be accomplished with a tablet or if its too much real estate.
That's kind of cool that it has a small display behind where the phone sits, that kind of resolves one of my concerns about it being totally useless without a phone, and having to uninstall it later when I sell the car.
Those "shelfs" on the top and bottom look like major dust catchers though, that would drive me nuts. The "release" button makes me wonder if the clamping mechanism is motorized? Would be cool if the magnet was strong enough and polarized correctly to trigger the Car Mode on the Moto X too.

you could always tape/glue a magnet to engage it.
