very dissappointed with the camera...any suggestions? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys.
i come from a photography background. classical training (dark room, color and bw), plus many years with very expensive canon dslr equipment. point being i have a penchant for photography and a good idea for image quality.
i wasn't expecting the quality of my G11 from this phone but i was definitely expecting better than what i am getting. pictures at night or in restaurants come out horribly overblown. most places pictures come out blurry and/or very soft focused.
i've seen posts blaming it on the camera software (sense). can the software really be crippling the hardware that much? is there an alternative camera software or a fix to the existing software?
has anyone successfully ported the CM6 camera over to sense?
how are you all getting alone with your "8MP" camera?

The new 3.30 update is supposed to help with dark shots, have you had a chance to try it out yet?

no i haven't. i'm not changing roms for the camera. but i'll look into moving the camera app over from the 3.30 rom. see if it works?

If you're using the older stock ROM you can flash it over top of the one you have and only wipe the dalvik & cache, that way you keep everything as is. If not you should be able to just copy the camera stuff. There's more to it then just the .apk file though, someone posted a list of changed files and I believe it showed some of the camera files in the system/lib folder changed also.

yeah but it's a phone that bragged about being able to capture bleeding colors thanks to its 8mp camera. if i'm getting the same image quality as my samsung code was getting me, it's dissappointing
the image quality problems we're experiencing i think are due to software limitations. hence why pictures supposedly come out better on CM6...

Nah, it's hardware. HTC has never been known to have good smartphone cameras.
I came over from the Epic... Lordy, what a great camera that thing has!
What's the deal with people saying that their camera took better pictures once the outer lens cover cracked, and was removed? Any truth to this?

Does anyone have a link to this apk. Or do I have to switch roms. Better yet I'm on a rooted stock sense Rom how would I get this apk on my phone.

I'm testing out VIGNETTE for taking photos.. so far it looks better.. I dont like the fact that it creates its own gallery....
how does the new 3.30 camera app work??

My lens cracked so I took the cover off and replaced it with a custom piece of clear scotch tape. Pictures look better now than they did before ( I'm serious). Here's a close up.

Mexican must go "right through him"

I agree with the OP. Yes it's only a cell phone but if anyone has used the camera on a BlackBerry Bold 9650, or a Tour for that matter you'll see the difference is night and day.
Hi all btw, I've read a lot on here but never posted!

@ Max Pain:
I completely agree with your assessment on the poor quality of the camera, as do many others who bought the whole "HD Cam" nonsense that HTC sold us.
To be fair, yes, this is a phone... But, the marketing (go figure) for the Evo hyped up the camera abilities as HD, 720p video. This phone does neither well. While they have made improvements in the coding since the release, this camera struggles immensely with jitter, poor low light capture (in which most cases the flash seems to wash everything out), and horrible audio quality during video.
Lastly the compression used is awful, and here's why I don't care how many megapixels the silly sensor captures, at the end of the day compression rules all.
95% of my pictures come out grainy and crappy, particularly while using the digital zoom. The software just cannot cope.
I started a thread about this very issue a couple months back, unfortunately the devs don't seem to view this as a task worth undertaking, and after the little amount of research and specs I've seen this may be because the cam sensor used sucks as badly as the software controlling it. It just doesn't do low light well at all. I still believe there's hope if someone with the programming stones who also shares a love for good photography steps up to the challenge.
Otherwise, we probably won't have a good camera until the Evo 2.
HA.
Anyone interested in seeing this topic gain momentum can go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782211
And just to prove I don't think the hardware is to blame check this out, this camera can shine under the right conditions. This photo is fully stock, not retouched in any way, and was taken using one of the various sense roms floating around mid summer. If we could get the low light shots, and video on par with this, I think we'd be in good shape.
The second photo is in the dark but shooting a bright frame, up close...
I don't think they are bad at all, they just rarely turn out like this.

I noticed that it takes 5-10 times to manually focus before taking a shot to get a sharp looking picture.
It's as if the algorithm for autofocus is broken, and only occasionally does the camera focus properly.

Me too. I'm always tap tap tapping the screen, and swearing at it. By then I've usually missed the shot I want to take.

Camera test

Could anyone provide series of photos taken by HTP2? I'd like to compare them with other devices.
More people would be welcome so we can compare even pro2 between themselfs. I've already met one pro2 with blurred and shaded camera. I just dont want to believe all those cameras are so bad.
It would be nice if you took photo in different conditions. Like outside, in the dark, of the text, of the colorful scene, inside the building with poor light conditions etc etc.
Thanks you all.

thank you for your post. Colors are so dull. I tried to increase contrast and it looks bit nicer. Anyway I think pro2 would deserve better camera.
Could anyone else share his opinions about the camera?

You can actually make the Kaiser camera ten times better by simply taking off the back cover when taking pictures or video. For some reason the plastic on the camera cover is dingy and blurs it a little.
Some people have actually removed that one plastic piece from the cover or just drilled a tiny hole, personally I couldn't do that.

just an FYI all, i didnt adjust anything. not even sure my pics are set to fine quality. I will check the settings and report back
EDIT: *** ok yup, had all the default settings with no adjustment to any of the lighting
I didnt change the settings in device. I changed contrast in Irfan view just to see if images may look better.
Lets admin that camera sux lot in HTP2. I just want to insure myself that the better result may be achieved by the software changes (like change of contrast for example).
On almost all photos i've seen there is some kind of gray curtain. Because I want to use camera in my next device I was thinking about it and i decided that its enough for me that photos looks good in the device when showing to friends. I dont need extra quality as compact camera could provide.
I was wondering what the video recording capability is on this phone. I'm told it's capable to record in 640*480 resolution these days. Is it any good (crisp / fluid) or choppy and.. well.. reasonably useless like the recordings my P4350 takes (taken into account that that phone records into the size of a poststamp)?
Bottom line: will I be using the feature to take my holland's funniest video and win 10 eurocents?
R_phAn - I can tell you in advance that this phone can't record fluid 640*480 video!
This is a result of a myriad of excuses:
- Drivers blah blah
- Hardware camera Interface to phone blah blah
- Processor blah blah
I've determined All this without even testing out the camera functionality myself... Imagine that!
And people get excited about this phone that uses even more dated processing hardware than the TP1?? (7200a)
LOL!

Tell me about it!
Admittedly this is the same across the board for all commercially available WM 6 series devices at the moment but it still stinks.
I am hoping this will change when Snapdragon processors are released as this is said to have at least 720p 30fps playback and record capabilities.
How is the screen, like when you Shake the Xperia X1 during taking a picture the screen won't lag.
A.t.m. on dutty's rom, he has done the same. when shaking the phone while in camera, the camera screen does not lag or get any delay.
Is this also the same on Touch Pro 2?
I'm considering getting a TP2 and sell my Touch HD.

Did the phone put the time stamp on it ? is able to be turned off ?
If you want a qwerty slider phone that is this slim then you have to accept that you cannot get a video camera into it
Phone is always a compromise between size and features and functions. Think about the size (the thinness of the slider part) and then compare it to the phones you say have good camera. They're a lot thicker.
Someday the technology will go further but this is what we have now.

Side-by-side comparison of iPhone 4s / Galaxy Nexus pictures (can you tell the differ

I was tired of hearing all the threads regarding how poor the quality of pictures are when taken with a Galaxy Nexus. I was also tired of the constant arguments about how the lighting wasn’t set correctly, or how I should be using a tripod, or how etc, etc, etc… Face it, if I was going to go through any of those motions to take a picture, I wouldn’t be reaching for my cell phone
So in the spirit of this, I took pictures of three simple items I had laying around my desk with both an iPhone 4s and a (CDMA) Galaxy Nexus. Both phones were set to complete auto and taken within seconds of each other to ensure identical lighting conditions. Once the pictures were taken, they were immediately downloaded. No further editing on either camera beforehand was performed.
The results:
Test #1 – “Moosejaw”

}
Hard to spot any differences. Sure, when zoomed in you can see the differences based on pixel density, but at 30,000 feet… it’s all the same to me.
Test #2 – “Ehpple”
Now we’re starting to see some slight differences. However, it wasn’t what I expected. To me (and I’m no expert), the top picture has a brighter feel to it, but also seems a bit washed out. The bottom picture, while a little darker, seems to be slightly sharper and more in focus.
Test #3 – “Hometown Pride”
This is an interesting comparison. My initial reaction was: “Woah, check out the first picture… the color is WAAAY off. The second picture is much more accurate!” However, if I hold the actual pop can up to the computer monitor and compare which picture is more accurate, the top picture’s color is spot-on while the bottom picture has a deeper “red” to it compared to the can in real life. BTW, I have passed all my tests for color blindness… really!
To me, the bottom picture looks more appealing… but the top picture is more accurate. Crazy!
In conclusion, I don’t see enough of a difference to warrant all the hate towards the Galaxy Nexus and it’s camera. One camera appears to make more "appealing" pictures while the other seems to better capture the "raw" aspect of the image.
If I want to capture a “moment”, the Nexus camera will work just fine for me. If I need to capture an “image”, I’ll leave both phones on the table and grab the Rebel instead. If I need to be acknowledged by anyone waiting for the 5:30PM ferry from the city back to Larkspur, I'll grab the...
P.S. I did not identify which pictures were from the iPhone and which were from the GN on purpose. This was done to avoid a placebo effect for either phone. However, if you really want to know, check the file names and reverse engineer it from there.
Great comparison. But which picture is from which phone? lol
Edit: Ok I read your last comment. Im having a hard time figureing that out with Jake and Andy.
top = GN
bottom = iPhone
Haha yeah, Jake has to be code for the iPhone though (Jake the Snake).
And Andy? obviously for Android...
=P
Did you get those Nexus pics on the first snap? How many did it take with each to get them?
The camera on the Galaxy Nexus is perfectly capable of taking great pictures and in my opinion it always does but I think what makes people write the camera off is the colour reproduction. The iPhone 4S and Galaxy SII seem to take pictures with colours that just 'pop' whereas the colours on the Nexus are duller and washed out. The vibrant pictures from an iPhone 4S or a Galaxy SII may look better visually but as mentioned by the OP, the colours are not accurate whereas pictures from the Nexus aren't very vibrant but they are accurate in terms of colour.
So people just want a camera that produces pictures that makes objects look better than they're supposed to! But you can easily use the photo editing features on the Galaxy Nexus to make the pictures similar to an iPhone 4S or Galaxy SII or maybe Google could release an update that makes photos seem more vibrant and saturated.
Faygo "rock and rye" ftw. Now I gotta go to the store because you got me craving some.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Top one looks better on the first two and the bottom looks better on the third. I'd say it's a wash.
For those who want to get the most out of their camera it would be a good idea to make pictures made in artificial lighting (like flash) with the white balance set manually. Experiment and find which setting gives you the most realistic result.
The "mood differences" in the pictures posted by the OP are mostly because the cameras chose different white balancing modes.
Auto-white balance (AWB) is wrong often, especially in artificial lightning, even in DSLRs.
Top picture was actually the iPhone in the first two pictures, and then i switched them around for the last picture.
I like the theory on the naming convention, much more exciting than the fact that i'm Andy, and my coworker (with the iPhone) is named Jake.
I totally agree with the white balancing issue, but i tried to make this a 'lowest common denominator' style of test, i.e. everything set to auto. I guess it's fair to say that the iPhone did a better job of light balancing... this one time, under these specific conditions.
Im glad someone else got the Faygo reference. However, now that i'm not in the office, it's time for a niceSanders chocolate stout from the Detroit Brewing Company for me.

First snap for all pictures with both phones.
The iPhone 4S camera looks amazing even in dim light!
Thanks for the comparison
Nice post, OP. I think you should have taken pics in different settings though because I think the SGN does considerably better at taking close-up shots than scenery/landscape shots or lower light indoor shots (with and without flash) You should do the same thing in those conditions to see the differences. I have the SGN and plan on getting the wife a 4S sometime soon (her OG Droid is barely working for her nowadays). So I planned on doing these types of comparisons when she got her phone too .
I'm sorry to say but I'm not seeing the major difference between these shots. Why are people saying this camera is so much crap when evidence like this shows otherwise? Maybe these indoor shots play to the GN's strength, but from the outdoor shots I've seen they're all marginally close.
Sure the iphone4/S & SGS2 may be better in every regard, but surely not enough for all the crying we're seeing on here?

Exactly my point.
Imagine comparing the two phones as automobiles (sorry, I live and work in Detroit... it's a habit).
The iPhone is the Ford Focus and Galaxy Nexus is the Chevy Cruz. One might be slightly faster in a straight line while the other would get better fuel economy, but the differences are so subtle that 99% of the users won't notice them. They are both cars (cameras) for the masses.
Lately, it seems like one camera is being called the Ferrari F430 and comparing it to a 1983 4-cylinder 4x4 Ford Ranger (I drove one all through college, trust me; it's a right ****ty vehicle!)
Can you do a side by side testing the flash on both cameras? My GN seems to take pictures with a yellowish tint. Its mostly noticeable on Asian people's skin which turns out looking sickeningly yellow.
I bought my wife the 4S when it came out and I got the Nexus when it came out (from my droidX)...I agree its not that big of a difference..mostly just more natural colors that can be spruced up if thats your thing.
Bottom picyure looks better in all 3 cases. Nice to see the GN can hold its own in the camera stakes. Another 'negative' ticked off my list of reasons not to get one in a couple of weeks
once I get 8 posts it will let me post photobucket photos from my nexus and that should change a lot of minds as well....must make 8 useless posts...2 down ;-)

[Q] Weird camera pictures. Should I exchange my phone?

I recently discovered this on a white lumia 900 and wonder if this is normal or if I need to get my phone exchanged.
The camera always gives a slightly discolored halo in the middle of a picture taken without a flash. I took a picture of a blank white wall and the effect can be seen clearly in the piture. (I adjusted the brightness a bit) (since i cant post links)
imgur.com/caiBu
Also, it doesn't take really good pictures in the dark. One weird thing that I saw is in this picture below. I took a picture with the phone in complete darkness and then opened the picture on the phone. The screen looks black but then when you pinch-to-zoom and increase the picture size, all sorts of weird dots and stuff appear and also can be seen if you auto-correct the final image using any picture software. I clicked the picture of the phone screen in a dark room.

Lulz. Welcome to the world of photography. You have discovered two things that have been discussed in photography for well over a century vignetting and noise/grain.
I have a $300 NONZOOM lens that if used on a $3000 camera will show vignetting if you shoot it wide open (f/1.4). Not sure why anyone would think the tiny lens on a mass produced phone handed out for free would be immune to that.
A guy bought a DSLR for $6,000 new and put a $1,500 lens on it. This is what he found...

The Lumia 900 is an awesome phone but it has to obey the laws of physics. You can't cram eight megapixels into a space the fraction of the size of a fingernail and expect to get noise free images. That's why miniaturization and the megapixel race are an anathema to good photography. I'll put it to you this way one of the greatest photographers ever prefered to shoot his work with an 8x10 camera. That's right a camera with film that measured 8x10 per a frame. Now you are shooting in terrible lighting conditions with a sensor that is a fraction of the size of your fingernail. My question is what did you expect?
Here's a little primer on sensor sizes...
For professional photography Canon APS-C is really the minimum. Sigma Fovean can be used but it is a very unique technology. Four thirds cameras take some decent pictures as well but that is about the limit. FYI see that tiny green box on the left? The sensor you are critiquing is a fraction of the size of that. Also when I really want to take I nice shot I use a medium format FILM camera. It's negative is even bigger than the medium format sensor on that chart.
Arizona Highways is considered to be at the pinnacle of photographic magazines. It usually only uses images taken with FILM cameras like this...
So bottom line is that vignetting and digital noise are present to some degree in EVERY camera phone. Are they at an unacceptable level in your particular unit? I don't know. I would have to know a lot more about your testing methodology and see similar sample pics taken under the exact same conditions by a variety of phones. Your phone may be defective or you may just be one of those special people that really pays attention to the quality of photographs. Some people for whatever reason are just really tuned in to what looks good and what looks bad. I love showing people like that my pictures. They can actually appreciate them or at least tell me what looks bad.

Yeah so do people with three thousand dollar cameras. It's all a matter of degree.
Unfortunately, the camera on this phone sucks. I have one and it takes horrible pictures 90% of the time. 10% of the time you will be amazed at how great the pictures look, the rest of the time you will be disappointed.
Not sure how how Nokia screwed it up this bad.

Let me see if I can give a simple explanation..
For your halo effect or as you can see its yellowish in the middle a been a noted problem in the lumia phone ( Samsung SGS2 forums are filled with similar problems what they call as the pink spot).
Apparently the phone might have a problem of adjusting the white balance and hence giving the yellowish tint.
Solution : I would try and see if you can manually adjust the white balance on the camera setting and see if it makes a difference to you as people have seem to found better results then the auto settings.
Regarding the Second problem as mentioned above its Noise which you probably get with low light photography.
SOLUTION : Try using flash with lower iso if possible, The higher the iso the more the noise, the lower the iso the less the noice will be and also make your pictures more darker, best to use flash.
Just my humble thoughts... and I dont have the lumia yet, but hoping to purchase one soon.
There are quiet a number of bugs in the lumia 900 which nokia has acknowledged and will be addressed in future updates

Unfortunately, the camera on this phone sucks. I have one and it takes horrible pictures 90% of the time. 10% of the time you will be amazed at how great the pictures look, the rest of the time you will be disappointed.
Not sure how how Nokia screwed it up this bad.

If your Lumia 900 is taking "horrible" pictures 90% of the time it is either defective our you aren't using it correctly.
There are several adjustments on the camera. I suggest playing with them. I definitely change the color balance depending on the lighting conditions and I mess with the scene settings as well.
When you say the pictures are "horrible" what are you comparing them to? Frankly I've never been impressed with the low light capability of sensors smaller than Canon APS-C. Especially if you decide to go pixel peeping the way the OP did. I pixel peeped an image from a point and shoot camera years ago... I never did it again. You see all kinds of things you don't really want to know about.

[Q] gnex camera vs...

I've read a lot or reviews and post saying that gnex camera is junk... but actually how is it? compare let said to an iphone 4 which is has same 5mp camera? or a SG2? or a Xperia arc? anybody has an idea which phone has a camera similar to the gnex and how bad really is it?

how does anything less than awesome = junk? Misstatements and exaggerations are not the good way to start a thread..
And that's why I'm asking... every single thread here and review said that "the camera sux" "the camera is useless" etc... since I dont own one, I was wondering how is compare to cameras that I've own in the past...
I think the camera is great. There may be better, but I'm coming from a droid 1 which had a pretty bad camera. The zero shutter lag is amazing.
The Camera is decent, not really "bad" by any means but of course it will be bad compared to the new generation of phones like the GS3 or iPhone 5.
Im actually quite surprised sometimes even if the shots are a little grainy. My friend even took a few decent pics in a club with the flash, so it will be good for most needs.
Its probably on par with the iPhone 4 camera. Maybe slightly better than it.
a few of my galaxy nexus photos..
anyone who says that the camera is bad just doesnt know how to use a camera

^ Exactly. A camera is only as good as the photographer.
My friend can't use the "awesome" camera on his HTC 1s to save his life.

btw, every one of those locations where these photos were taken, were under 4-7 feet of water monday night due to hurricane sandy
those pics look really good... if the camera is the same or more efficient than the one on iphone 4, is a good camera too me... I just wanted to be sure before buying this phone...
As a former S2 owner I can say that the picture quality of the Nexus is lower. I don't say that it's junk, but the difference is visible. What I like about he GNexus's camera is the zero shutter lag, it's quite helpfull in some ocassions. If you want good quality pictures use a dedicated camera, a smartphone is a smartphone. The pictures that I take with it are used mainly for Facebook and other social sites, the resolution or quality isn't that important.

Out of curiosity, are you using the stock app? or another? I agree for the most part this phone takes pretty good pictures...yours are excellent though.
Let's not exagerate. They are abover average, but they can't be compared with the ones taken by an S2, I4... they are of lower quality.
Hey Simms22
How do you take pictures like that. Mine come out fuzzy. Like it looks good before I take it, and then boom it looks so bad and ugly.
Sometimes I just take a screenshot Cuz that comes out Better then the picture. Why is it better before the actually taking a picture???

stock camera app. but i do have to admit, photography has been a hobby of mine for over two decades. the place where most normal camera phone users dont look at is lighting. taking the right kind of photo for the lighting available, or finding ways to get the kind of lighting thats needed. many times its just a simple matter of tilting the phone at different angles, like sunset photos. when shooting sunset photos i tilt the phone at about 20-40 degrees. if you shoot the photo with the camera phone pointing stright at it, colors get washed out or photos are too dark(except the sun). by tilting the phone up, you get to see all the wonderful colors in the sky. there are lots of little tricks like this that could be learned. also, using a flash in daylight, i do this to bring out bright colors in flowers instead of letting the sun "bleach" the photos with overly bright light. also, very important in camera phones, is cleaning the camera lens cover before shooting. almost no one does this. photos appear slightly blurry or smudged if you dont.
same photo with and without a flash, completely changes the mood...
and a few more, all stock camera
I usually never use the flash. I agree with the screenshots solution but never tried that. For example the other night I wanted to take pictures of my lit pumpkins. The image was nice and dark and just showing the glowing faces. Snap a pic and it come out like a deep purple background and nasty. The image on the screen looks great but sucks once it captured it. I'm sure it would do the same thing with any other phone though.

the samoled screen of the gnex is pretty, but misleading. it tends to oversaturate colors and blacks. thats why photos look better on the phone, but not as vivid on other screens.

you do great work!
Gnex camera is not so good on low light. I previously owned a galaxy note and the pics taken from that phone is better at low light. Not that surprising as the gnote is 8mp. Then again i literally suck in taking pictures. Gnex cam is not that good but not that bad either

Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1Ql9Ym1KMQ
It's a review for the same product but for an iPhone. It's probably comparable to the HTC One lens. Seems quite nice.
I see these on eBay and very tempted to try one out.

I had Olloclip for my old iPhone and it was very good http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7758VC/A/olloclip-quick-connect-lens-solution-for-iphone-4s4 and also Manfrotto KLYP http://www.manfrotto.co.uk/klyp-iphone-4-4s which both worked very well. I would be interested to know if there was something just as good out there although the One camera is far better than the iPhone bare imo
Whoa looks cool. Wonder how it compares to that sony zoom attachment

I have thought a lot about this and, although a nice idea if you don't own a decent camera, it is (to all intents and purposes) pointless.
The beauty of a smartphone camera is that it fits in your pocket and is always there. Given a choice between carrying around all that extra junk, knowing I was off taking some serious photos, or just taking the SLR and do the job properly guess which would win out?
Face it, this thing is a geek toy (and there's nothing wrong with that, I've been a geek for over 40 years) but as a serious replacement for an SLR? I think not.

Watching the video of the iPhone version it does work pretty well with obvious softening around the center focal point. The different is price though, an SLR is easily in the hundreds or thousands not including extra lenses. While this lens is under $30. Totally get it isn't going to match a SLR in any way shape or form, but for that extra zoom at a concert or something having the phone in your pocket and the lens in another, I can't complain. So, I guess I agree with you in a sense. lol

Exactly my thoughts.
I don't own a professional or even midrange camera.
The last digital camera I bought dates from 2002.
Since mobile phones came with a camera, I been relying on those for my snapshots.
Snapshots taken on a day out to the beach or museum. Even if I had a "real" camera, I'd still be tempted to use my smartphone because of how small it is and easy to put away. I'm no professional photographer by any means.
And for someone like me, a zoom lens is actually an interesting idea.
Just like you said, going to a concert using this thing if it really works well, is a really nice thing.
Last time I was at a concert, the footage I shot was rather disappointing simply because of the distance between me and the artists on stage.
Of course the question remains if stability wouldn't become a problem then using such a gadget if it zooms really far.
This also troubles midrange digital cameras, lol. I saw a review of one of these pocket HD cameras. It had incredible zoom, but without a tripid and a stable surface to put it on, it was nearly impossible to shoot a video you can actually watch.
Mmmm...I've been spying one of these for a little while.
...but I'm not really interested in the 12x lens...but the case for the phone, as it has a threaded hole around the camera opening.
I'd like to adapt a screw-in fisheye lens, just because I'm not a fan of the magnetic ones. that and the fact that the magnetic ones don't really play well with my current case.
One of my friends has a few spare screw-in fisheyes from his iPhone because he keeps breaking his cases, and buying new ones...so hopefully the thread on the screw-in part of the lens is the same as on this 12x case.
Will post my feedback if I decide to "MacGyver" this setup.

Be sure to leave an opening for the flash so you can still use it when the lens is off.
Clearly this isn't an SLR replacement or even a super high end lens, however..
Outside of raw pixel count, the One has pretty much the best low light and pixel to pixel sensor (1/3" - the same size and similar MP res you'd find on prosumer/professional minidv/dvcam/hdv videocams not too many years ago), not to mention the fastest (or at least same as) aperture stock lens (f2) of just about any skinny jeans pocketable camera in existence. [Keep the lens in your other pocket ] Not to mention solid manual controls and on-body OIS.
Learn all the kinks of the lens and put it in some capable hands, you could really do some high quality damage with this thing. This really isn't all that different from mini35 hacks to attach focus screens and film lenses to consumer cameras. The camera is basically just being used as the ccd/cmos and storage device.
Video could be tricky, but doesn't seem any different than any other rolling shutter camera.
(as long as you don't have the red sensor issue)
$20 meh, in for 1.
Throw a small enough circular polarizer on the end and that would be even slicker.
Don't you think this would be a better choice??

Sony already made specific product that meet your need
from HTC One
For the price of that Sony wifi camera, one might as well make the jump to a fully functional digital SLR.
