Question RE: unroot - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I had a t-mobile desire, i rooted with pauls instruction and zip.
I have a problem with sending mms to some phones and have read that an unroot will solve this
Question, if i unroot with generic HTC rom (1.15.405.4) will i then be able to download and install new roms that occasionally appear on the HTC site ?
i kinda think that might be possible because im gonna be unbranded ....right?
or am i all confused ?
anyone !?

Yes you will. The only way to rebrand your phone would be to install a T Mobile rom (Why you would do that is beyond me )

One more question please
This is the guide i will follow, from madaco site
The Guide:
1.Make sure your goldcard is in your phone (If Required)
2.Turn your Desire on
3.Connect it to a Windows PC
4.Run the HTC RUU
5.Let it run
6.& YOUR DONE!
Question, do i double click ruu.exe from my pc or from my phone !?...i'm guessing PC?
(Sorry if its a dumb question!)

Happens to me quite a lot!
careful! You don't want a McBrick.
Saying that my Orange Desire currently has the pay's ROM on it
Mega, a quick search will tell you everything you need to know. Create your Goldcard and flash a ROM, not much too it!
Jpcurrie, did you notice any improvment in battery life after getting rid of the Orange ROM?

Can you really brick when just flashing a generic ROM? I thought it was just when rooting.
I did actually find my battery life seems to have improved since flashing generic from Orange, but really that could be cos the battery has had a few good charges now and is reaching max capacity, or just cos I spend less time on the phone than I did in the first couple of days.

Could someone please clarify something...
a) would flashing the generic HTC rom require me to root my phone?
b) If i donot have to root it...would i still be able to receive over the air updates of the OS? or that doesnt matter if your phone is rooted or not?
A little confused here....
Ive got my desire from orange!

If you don't touch the radio (which you can't without rooting) then it doesn't make any difference that it's simlocked.

At a guess thats an Unbranded Desire
when it loads up do you get the HTC welcome screen or a T-Mobile/Orange/O2/etc screen??
I think it is unbranded, so that is good. But maybe you should wait for someone else to join into this discussion, because i'm not fully sure and don't want you to end up with a phone which is locked.

i don't wanna root my device....can i flash it with official RUU as said by Flaggie???
Just remember that with rooting you don't have any new languages, you still need to flash a custom rom. You could just first flash a generic rom (which you don't need to root for just connect your phone to your pc and run the .exe) from the xda website I mentioned before and see if you like the regular rom.

Good good, its all about the Custom stuff

give it a read and when you feel comfy with rooting go with it, and if you get stuck just add onto the end of that topic, simples!
Dear Ones...
I tried to update firmware with generic ROM but got the error....
Can you help me with this please ???
Make sure your phone is in Bootloader,,, then into Recovery mode
The 170 error is normal. At this point your desire is in bootloader mode and you just need to reboot your pc and re run the RUU.
If tour trying to downgrade - I don't think you can without root. I tried last night and It fails. I'm on 1.21 but my phone is now network locked and as its only 2 weeks old the imei is not listed yet on any database to undo the network lock.

Thx all for support...but once again i ended up with same error.....
i have HTC Sync installed and all other thuings i had taken care while updating...no result
Can i have complete detail...i mean step by step procedure..here or anywhere written....

[Q] Two questions

I'm on T-Mobile UK and getting the DHD soon. I've done quite a bit of reading on rooting and I will definitely do it for the added benefits to my phone. I have two questions surrounding the subject...
1. The VISIONary page says to have a 'safety net' ready before attempting to permaroot. Can someone tell me, or point me in the right direction (Links would be nice) to preparing a copy of the stock ROM to reinstall if something goes wrong? If there are any guides please share =)
2. If I needed to send it for repairs would the only thing I really need to do is to use VISIONary to Unroot the phone? What about any apps that required rooting? Would they have to be un-installed first? I assume that in such a scenario once I got the phone back just re-root it again.
Hi and welcome to XDA.

One such "safety net" is to ensure you have all the correct drivers installed on your host computer, just install HTC Sync 3 and it will take care of that. Also download the correct RUU (Rom Update Utility) for your particular region & carrier. You can use this to revert your DHD to the state it was when you took it out of the box.
Here you can find the --> Desire HD Files. HTC Sync will come on the SD Card of your new phone.

Using the above RUU's your DHD will be factory restored. Everything you did will be reverted back. All the apps you installed will be removed. There would be technically no way HTC would know you rooted your DHD.

Thanks for the answer.
How do I know what RUU to use? From my glance I would assume mine would be the: TMO DE 1.39.111. Also know how I can confirm if it's the same version as mine or older? thanks.
If your getting it from T-Mobile UK then you will need a TMO-UK RUU, sadly there isn't one available yet. The TMO DE is for T-Mobile Germany.
You could use a generic HTC RUU, just find the latest version. If you are planning to root, S-OFF, etc... then avoid this --> RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_ 26.04.02.17_M2_release. As this will lock down your DHD.
Thanks again. Though I'm not sure if I shouldn't just wait for a TMO-UK RUU to make an appearance before I root my phone.....Would a generic HTC RUU work for my current firmware? Also wouldn't a generic RUU be a problem if I tried to send it back for repairs?
Oh also I heard mention of a gold card a couple of times here and there. Would this be needed for using an RUU?
No problem at all,
Yes a generic HTC RUU would work. I got my DHD from Orange UK, as it was from the first batch I received it unlocked & unbranded, just a generic HTC DHD. Although carriers will supply you with a branded & locked handset 99% of the time, people still get generic HTC handsets.
If it went in for repairs, T-Mobile will just replace the software for their own anyway.
A goldcard is a modified SD Card that will allow you to flash unsigned ROM's to a locked (S-ON) handset.

[Q] Desperate help needed to unroot - no usb

Ok so long story short my usb connection is toast and I need to return my still rooted/s-off htc desire bravo to tmobile to get it repaired.
I have a reader for my sd card but it seems that i cant simply install an ota stock zip, i cant connect it to my pc and obviously i can't return it as is.
Can anyone push me in the right direction. Sorry but i've been googling for about an hour
could someone perhaps provided me with a stock backup i could restore would that work?
did you tried usb brick fix ..?
sorry i should have been clearer the connection itself is damaged as in it will not charge
Uhm this isn't the right section, but you can flash a RUU by putting the OTA.zip on your SD-card, and renaming it to PB99IMG.zip
Boot into fastboot and press Yes (volume up)
You might need a goldcard for this, so better hope you made one before.
More information is here:

no i dont have a goldcard.....
so can i at least flash a generic stock rom?

The nandroid will no help u to unroot anyway..Even a stock backup doesn't remove ur custom recovery, and the s-off
Explain much clearly the problem..Why do u need to send it to repair? If it obviuosly an hardware fault, "maybe" they don't care about the software..
EDIT: Anyway on http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo there are some RUU available..This one is for tmobile uk (rename it as PB99IMG.zip e put on the root of ur sdcard, reboot ur phone on bootloader, wait and accept the update, u should noot need a goldcard if ur phone is tmobile uk branded)
yeah but i'm recognising now that close is better than nothing

Help Please, HTC Stuck On The HTC Logo Stock Rom

Hi all.
This is my GF phone so i have no idea about them. Been working fine until today. She popped the wifi on and it said there was a new update do you want to update and she said yes so im assuming she has updated to the new firmware. After that it rebooted and then just hung on the HTC logo screen. This is all stock never been messed about with so just shop bought if you like and all official.
I can get into the boot menu ETC and ive recovered it and that still didnt work but the recovery only seemed to delete all my data im guessing as that was the only option
Can someone please help ?
Thank you
Did you go on the thread named Troubleshooting conveniently stuck on top of the thread?
I did mate. its says to format all those listed but all i had was wipe all data. i dont have a clue how or what to flash onto this
Whats does s off and s on mean mate ?

Right have the Bravo, But you say boot into fast boot which ive done connected via usb which is done, but then Run RUU. How do i do that ive been looking about and re-read your sticky but im either thinking RUU is a programme or RUU is a rom ? im a little confused and dunno how to run lol
Thanx for your help mate which is really appreciated but sorry for my htc noobness
RUU is a Windows program which flashes a firmware onto your device. Read more: Desire Unbricking guide and Goldcard FAQ
After installing HTC Sync, you uninstall HTC Sync alone leaving the drivers installed. Then run the RUU and follow onscreen instructions.
Thanx Guys, appreciate all the replys and the help
