EVO 4G Screen Glass - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if the EVO has an oleo-phobic coating on the glass like the iPhone or the HTC Hero?

I believe it is Gorilla Glass.

Nice. I see on the Corning web site that Gorilla Glass is available with the coating, so I guess the question remains...does HTC order it with the coating? Is the glass on the HTC Hero Gorilla Glass?

google it.
http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/index.aspx

So, further searching on Google reveals that the common belief is that HTC doesn't use Gorilla Glass on any of their phones. The Motorola Droid does. So, I guess the question remains unanswered...

Somewhere on Android central someone posted a reply from HTC saying it was normal glass with a plastic coating for better touch accuracy. Same as the Incredible.

A plastic coating, eh? That sounds weird. I'll see if I can find the post...thanks! I really like the oleo-phobic coating on my iPhone 3GS. I had a screen protector on my 3G just to combat fingerprints. No need on the 3GS...any prints wipe right off on my pant leg.

Dug up the post.. It was on AndroidForums. The latest word is that it is standard glass with a flexible plastic covering.
http://androidforums.com/htc-incred...ing-gorilla-glass-htc-says-so.html#post703648

Thanks for the link, but I'm not buying it. Windows Mobile phones require a plastic layer on the outside of the glass to work correctly, but Android doesn't. Take the Hero as an example. Or the Incredible. I have a friend with one and can confirm no plastic layer. iPhone doesn't either. Well, Windows phones up to the HTC HD2 that is. It has a capacitive screen, too.

My brother has access to a Mass Spectrometer which could put an end to this once and for all.. Just have to smash a screen into powder first
Looks like if we can get a hold of some "Flouric Acid" we could test the screen as well.. Just bring a vial and put a few drops on the demo unit at the Sprint store? http://www.hoyaoptics.com/specialty_glass/flat_panel.htm

considering the Incredible is AMOLED and this isn't (and the same size as the HD2), I'd bet the EVO screen is more like the HD2 than the Incredible. I'm not sure if the HD2 uses gorilla glass, but it's still pretty damn resistant to scratches.

I've had my EVO 4g for a year now and while it is very scratch resistant, it loves fingerprints :-(
However, a good coating with RainEx (original) keeps it fairly clean and easy to clean. Needs a new application about every 2-weeks.

[Q] Best case to prevent screen *cracking*?

Are there any cases that can actually prevent the screen from *cracking*? Like maybe a contoured case that stuck out or something. Anyone have any ideas?
None. There are some that offer a little more protection. Otterbox makes a great case. None that will actually prevent the screen from cracking.

Trident Cyclops or Trident aegis are good too

Actually, the myTouch 4G does in fact have a gorilla glass screen.

Gorilla glass may help... but it is by far the end all be all of safety. My 1 year old dropped my wifes phone on the kitchen floor. About 14" drop. Landed on the corner just right.... spider cracked all over.
Gorilla glass may help. But its still glass.

that list is wrong...mytouch slide, if you looked at the screen wrong it would crack. had mine shatter like 2wice.
Gorilla Glass or Chuck Norris Glass, nothing truly protects it from shattering. The cases mentioned above are the closet you can get. If its dropped unto something that's smaller than the cases, then obviously it might break. So, as people have said, be careful and buy a case.
Don is right gorilla glass doesn't really help prevent shattering, gorilla glass is just suppose to be more scratch resistant than your average glass.
I think it's just the luck of the fall, i.e. how it lands/hits. I've dropped my phone probably 10 times in the 4 months I've had it, and not a single crack. I don't use a case either, just best skins ever, and I swear I really do think it has helped protect the phone. It's true though, if it falls just the right (or wrong) way, it's gonna break, so who knows.

HTC devices with Gorilla Glass from the corning site, I doubt they have a reason to falsify the info below:
HTC: 7 Mozart, 7 Surround T8788, Aria, ChaCha, Desire, Desire HD, Desire S, Desire Z, Dopod A6388, Dopod T8388, Dragon, Droid ERIS, Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, EVO Shift 4G, G1, G2, HD2, HD7, HD mini, Hero, Incredible S, Inspire 4G, Legend, myTouch 3G, myTouch 3G Slide, myTouch 4G, T9199, Thunder Bolt, Tianxi T9188, Salsa, Trophy, Wildfire, Wildfire S

Htc Desire screen is Gorilla glass confirmed in gsmarena..

Firstly please check the link..
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire-3077.php
so..as u can see our Desire's screen glass is Gorilla glass confirmed only by gsmarena and i also checked other sites but none of them contain this spec.
so i'm kinda confused regarding this, coz i dont want to use my phone with plastic screen which protector worn out within few days and have to change over and over again..
so what is ur xperience using Desire without any screen protector?
Just NO. Yep, sure it doesn't get scratched by keys and knives, but if you keep it in your pocket thin and sharp dust particles can be deadly. A friend of mine tried to go without a screen protector, and after a month or so there were a few light scratches...guess what happens if you go on like that for a year or so. Also, the first time you go to the seaside you're screwed: so happened to my gf with her brand new ipod touch, which now has a big nice smile in the middle of the screen...dust/sand particles are really dangerous, even for gorilla glass, believe me.
Firstly a screen protector wont 'wear out' within a few days, unless you have finger nails like edward scissorhands then itll last for months before needing to be changed.. ive had my cheap protector on for 3 months already and its still as good as new.. not bad whan it was something like a quid for 6.. and when i do come to change it I know theres still a pristine screen underneath.
Secondly even if it is so called gorilla glass its not immune to getting scratched, isnt it best to have an extra layer that can get scratched before the glass below it does?
You just have to look at the state of some iphones to realise gorilla glass isnt all its cracked up to be
Absolutely no scratches
My Desire was one of the first delivered last year - and until today there is absolutely no scratches on the glass. And I wear the phone with me every day, it has fallen into the dust etc., etc. The metal frame has scratches, the metal plate around the cover of the camera. But not the front glass. I'm really extremely happy with the glass quality.

You might have been lucky there..ever tried to look at it under a very strong light? Micro scratches aren't very likely to be seen in normal use.
I scrached it with sand so easy and once it felt on flor and got deep and wide scraches on glass and small bumps on metal. When screen is off I can see scraches easy.

I confirm: absolutely no scratches. NO. Not big, not micro. None. Niente. Nada. Nirwana. Gar Nix. Rien du tout.
And if they aren't noticeable under normal light what does it matter
My 1st desire arrived the day after orange put them on sale, so it was one of the 1st. After 2 weeks of keeping it in my suit pocket the screen had some nice scratches on it (probably from a lighter). So I would say all ways have a protector on it, in my case a Zagg which went on my 2nd desire, 1st one got sent back as it was playing up later to be found out it was due to using some power saving app, least the replacement arrived with no scratches and the zagg went straight on.
Someone should do this to their Desire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2EYnUGUti0
Until then, I do not believe this has gorilla glass.

omg!!!! thats brutal!!!
thanks all for helping me to determine weather should i use my desire with or without screen protector....
so the bottom line is our desire actually doesn't have gorilla glass screen and it is not advised from most of u that not to use without screen protector...
Well, tbh i don't know wether it's gorilla glass or not...what i do know about that kind of glass is that it offers a good resistance when you try to break it, and it's overall more durable, otherwise it's like any kind of scratch resistant glass. This said, there's plenty of vids on youtube showing gorilla glass getting scratched (like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EimSyAIuDoI&feature=youtube_gdata_player), so why risking it, i'd say
I'm fairly certain its not Gorilla Glass since I've got a couple fairly big scratches through normal use.

Well it still means that it can be scratched: if it falls face down on gravel you can be quite sure you'll get something noticeable
Also, maybe tiny scratches won't annoy you, but for sure they will affect screen durability...i mean it could crack more easily you know.
Hey man, i don't wanna be a ****, i just wanna say that all of the superduper hax glass powered devices i had or stumbled across in my long phone nerd career got scratched sooner or later...but hey, at the end of the story it's your baby, not mine
Also its kind of pot luck wether you get a good qualitly screen protector.
I bought mine for like £2 for 6 and they show scratches after a week
whereas my friends ones, which were also bought from ebay for a similar price do not
show one scratch in months, and hes a bmx rider and his phone goes through alot
more than mine. All his friends with iphones have cracked screens so its stronger than
that at least. Ill always use a screen protector anyway, gorilla glass or not.
people...google it. here is a link. my desire has no scratches at all, and i hate screen protectors. i like my phone pure - without anything on it. all the best
I cannot post links, so go to the corning gorilla glass and see the products
the desire definitely does not have gorilla glass. it is very odd that corning who makes gorilla glass says that the desire does have it though that is incorrect as htc has said it does not. i had my desire without a case for a few weeks and it has 2 micro scratches that can only be seen when you shine a light on it while the screen is off. i hate the feel of screen protectors so i just have a plastic case for it and i haven't seen any new scratches on it for over a year.
er...just buy a case, no screen protectors needed. My Desire is 12 months old and not a mark on it. Case I use hardly adds any bulk whatsoever.

Trying to get ahead of the game. Isn't the Infuse the same screen size and layout as the Epic Touch? If so Seidioonline.com has some great screen protectors.

I'm not asking sarcastically, I'm generally curious: Why bother with screen protectors on these? They only cloud the view and the screens are so incredibly hard to scratch that I can't imagine what you'd have to do to them that a screen protector would manage to prevent. I know my Epic 4G didn't acquire a single sign of damage in its year, and that's pretty unsurprising given the Gorilla Glass that's used on it. Same should apply to the Touch.
I've got the same seidio protector on my epic. You can't even tell its there. Looks and feels exactly like the screen.
Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I've tried another companies invisishield?? and it totally sucked ass! Paid dearly for it too, like 30 bucks. It was nothing more than a piece of vinyl.

I've had my original epic without a screen protector since the first day it was released and it still doesn't have a scratch on it. The salesman at the sprint store even commented on how it looked brand new when he was trying to sell me a screen protector for my new Epic touch.
With gorilla glass it's really not needed, unless you just like spending money.
I ordered the Skinomi one too.. but you guys (and others) are making me doubt its necessity. I'm just paranoid that one day it will be scratched by some sand or keys that I forgot were in the pocket.
What if you drop it on sharp pavement/asphalt in such a way that it simply slides across it, would it still not scratch the gorilla glass?

Just search YouTube for Gorilla Glass and watch the absurd and painful things they do to it without effect. RAZOR BLADES across its screen, baggies full of screws, etc.
And in your scenario you'd be far more likely to shatter the screen than scratch it, and no protector will stop that.
I agree with the no need for a screen protector on Gorilla glass. I used to sell phones on craigslist all the time and did find that some people managed to scratch iPhone screens. I'm sorry, but if I pay that much money for electronics, then I am gonna take care of them. Then again I've seen people with ragged out Mercedes and Audi's also, so go figure.

Because they don't cloud the view at all if you use the clear ones and they actually do scratch quite easily by sand and other debris. Look no further then the plethora of scratched iPhone 4s with gorilla glass and you can see it's nowhere near scratch proof.
i made this for every1 asking about screen size of infuse v epic touch
The dimensions listed are sometimes misleading on those sites; I owned a Vibrant which was techincaly a different size than international SGS yet every single accessory fit like a glove. That is obviously not the case with this device, but the dimensions are pretty close.
I opened like 4 boxes of Infuse accessories at Best Buy this morning looking for something temporary to protect my device while better options appear and aside from a few minor things, all of the cases fit the ET4G well. The Infuse is more square than our device and the headphone jack and volume rockers are a tad off (though still usable). Only major incompatibility is that mic hole is in wrong place on all the Infuse cases. I ultimately did not end up buying anything, but I am almost positive that Infuse screen protectors would be the exact right size.
All it takes is one scratch to ruin your phone experience. That's my opinion.

So why doesn't the Galaxy Nexus have Gorilla glass again?

The predominant reasoning for this on the interwebz was because of the 'curve' of the screen. I never did understand if this was the concave curve of the screen from top to bottom or the convex curve of the screen around the edges. (you know...the one that makes dry screen protectors bubble up around the edges if they are not a few mm smaller)
HOWEVER,
This morning, Anandtech released their review of the Nokia Lumia 800. That phone has both macro and micro curves (I've held the N9 with the same glass) and that glass is Corning Gorilla glass!
I understand that Gorilla glass can be scratched with a material hard enough etc.,etc. I just want to point out, it doesn't seem to be a technological limitation that keeps Gorilla Glass from our phones.
Below is the incomplete link:

It's funny cuz you can't scratch any phone screen ever with keys...
I managed to scratch mine within days of getting it. I'm not sure how, but it's rather frustrating. It would be nice if it remained pristine for at least a few weeks...
My GN has a hair line scratch that can be seen at an angle on a black screen. Its a bit annoying since im OCD but compared to my Epic 4G and the abuse that one went through its kinda sad.
Why? Simple. Because they have to kill too many Gorilla's to make the glass.

I did hear that Corning has a new product out called 'Lotus glass'.....but the primary feature of that product (if I remember right) was large scratch resistant touch screen surfaces like TVs etc. I think there may be some physical limitation that keeps gorilla glass from being used on devices much larger than a laptop. Lotus glass was supposed to solve that.
But you're right, I KNOW the rest of the case is going to scuff. With or without a case. Just give it six months. Unless you go the polymer skins route.
Anyways......It isn't about what you're going to do with the information now. It was just interesting that the main reason cited as behind why Gorilla glass (and search ANY forum for the clamor behind the Gnex not having it) does not appear to be true.

I literally LOL'ed!
A few months back I said the hell with screen protectors on my Droid Incredible. I knew I was getting a new phone soon anyway. The incredible has gorilla glass, and it is now covered with a bunch of tiny little scratches. No glass is scratch proof, it's all in how you treat it. If you have a desk job and you are careful with you phone, you probably won't scratch it up too bad. If you work construction, you may still mess it up with an otter box.
If the nexus had gorilla glass there would still be threads about scratches on the screen. We probably went from a 95% chance that you won't scratch your screen to a 91% chance you won't scratch the screen with this new glass. If you don't buy it, look at most phones with gorilla glass that are not handled carefully and you'll see scratches.

Exactly! It all comes down to the user.
You scratched up an Incredible with Gorilla Glass, and I personally have had various phones w/o Gorilla Glass and I never use cases or screen protectors and they were all in mint condition when I passed them onto someone else.
So moral of the story, focus less on what brand the glass is and more on how you protect your phone.
Yup.. When I took care of my Incredible it was always in perfect shape. Then I stopped giving a crap when the Nexus was announced and I knew I was switching. Gorilla glass or not, scratches showed up.

You know what happened the last time I talked up Gorilla Glass on a Droid RAZR?
The guy I was talking to took the RAZR, banged it as hard as he could on the desk corner, and cracked/powdered the screen. "Not so tough," he said.
Moral of this story is you, the user, can protect your phone far better than any manufacturer.

Everything is about $$.
Nexus has a few extra things that probably push it's cost higher, so they are likely going with an unbranded version, in order to keep the cost down enough.
I'm sure the screen is pretty costly in itself, while the Note is same resolution and tech - it's bigger so probably easier to make.

Screen protectors?

Hi All,
I know that the Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass, but does anyone know how scratch resistant the screen is? I have never used screen protectors, and don't really want to put one on my Nexus, but if the screen is easily scratched I might have to think about it. Any thoughts?

I have a Zagg Invisible Shield on mine. It's really nice... adds a bit of friction, but is just a minor learning curve.
I know how you feel OP. My previous two phones had Gorilla Glass I and never felt that I needed a screen protector. However, the coating on this screen does scratch fairly easily so I recommend picking one up. I just put an XO Skins screen protector on mine and I am loving it. You can't even tell it's there.
@sn0warmy: Thanks for this. When you say it scratches easily, just how easily? I tend to treat my phones pretty gently (i.e. never in the same pocket as keys etc), so do you think I still need a protector? Is the screen at all scratch resistant?

Yes, many people are getting scratches on their phones from just random dirt in their pockets.
It sucks...I've had Gorilla Glass phones in the past, that have been thrown like a baseball at cement walls that haven't scratched or chipped, not to mention never needing a screen protector.
With all my phones I have used an Otterbox Defender series while at work and a sunglass bag when off work, out and about. It works for me, I'm not too clumsy and I am fairly careful with my phone so no scratches for me. I don't know exactly why, but I dislike having to use a screen protector.

The GNex, while a great phone, does not have the gorilla glass that you've all come to know on other phones. It's bad, and your pocket might as well be sandpaper around it. Cover it up quickly with a screen protector. I speak from experience, my GSM version GNex got "mysteriously" scratched from one day to the next.
Now the question is: Which one? Zagg is leaving horizontal lines on my screen and is pissing me off, so that's out of the question.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
This is all very strange to me, because I had my SGS for nearly a year, never used a case, tossed it in my handbag or hoody pocket with my keys all the time...it has no visible scratches.
I've had my Gnex since Christmas and it already has one deep scratch and also a "ding" in the glass, both of which can be felt if you run a fingernail across the defaced area. I have not been nearly as rough with it as I was with my SGS.
I know the plural of "anecdote" is not "data", but still, my Gnex now wears a screen protector, as much as I hate the bl**dy things. I'm also waiting anxiously for someone to come out with a protective case that I don't hate.
@alias3800 @lilirose --> I guess, judging from both your experiences, it does seem like the Gnex has fortified glass, that is weaker than the well known Gorilla glass from e.g. SGS2. Not that Gorilla glass can't get scratches or break (I've had both situations), but from your descriptions I get the feeling, that it will take less force to damage the GNex fortified glass.
If true and if Gorilla glass is stronger, then one can only wonder why Samsung didn't use it on the GNex, like on the SGS2. Doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, I will have to see. I hate cases and screen protection, so I will take the chance with no protection and see how it goes.

On the same data point, I've discovered that dry-application screen protectors are worthless on the Gnex because of the curved glass. I was afraid of the wet-application ones but I decided to try one (XO Skin) after going through 12 dry-application ones without getting a single one aligned and placed without enormous bubbles and peeling edges. I admit I suck at applying the dry ones but with the Gnex it seems pretty much impossible to do.
I consider myself to be gentle on my phones. That being said, I already have a couple small scratches in the glass that in my opinion would not have occurred with a higher grade of fortified glass. I am sure the screen curvature factors into the options they had. So what screen protector is most recommended that is invisible and does not increase friction?

I don't think there is one that's 100% drag-free, but the best one I've found is XO Skins....it doesn't have an orange peel texture, and the drag is only slight after you've broken it in a bit. When I first got mine I thought I wasn't going to be able to stand it because it was rubbery, but after two weeks of use it only feels slightly different to my SGS (which has bare GG).
