Possible ways to Root Droid Incredible - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically this is for organization and for people to understand and help contribute to our root attempts
The Thread should discuss the ideas to gain root and why they won't work or what the status is. Also if you have a question of will this help us gain root, then post it or PM me and we can discuss it on IRC or in here and then come to a conclusion if it will help or not.
In no way am I a dev or understand how all this works completely but I would like to help and if this is a way I can, great and trying out new things.
Ideas
1) Newer Kernel Exploits
Status: ???
2) Zip File Fuzzing (Bootloader overflow)
Status: ???
3) Root Level things running
Status: ???
4) Mount internal storage and modify OS
Status: ???
5) Trick from the Desire
Status: We need a signed ROM from HTC to get that to work.
6) Let's put an image on the SD and see if it will boot that
Status: No. It doesn't work
7) Trick from the Evo
Status: No. The Evo depends on some specific stuff that Incredible doesn't have.
8) Fastboot oem unlock
Status: Everyone and their mom tried, doesn't work
9) Flash a new image
Status: No, you and what root?
10)Shoryuken ptrace() exploit.
Status: No. It's been patched.
If you guys think this is pointless, delete.

Future Use...

2nd Future Use...

Thanks for putting this together!

Been looked at, something was potentially found but there were ethical concerns about using it because it would be a local root exploit on anything running the same Linux kernel as the DI.

Um... OK? Use it, root the phone, and any phone running the same kernel for that matter, then submit so it can be fixed. If the devs here found it, I'm sure someone more malicious WILL find it and exploit it.

It would be highly unethical.
Script kiddies would potentially have an opportunity to exploit thousands of vulnerable devices until they were patched.

Just a question.... It seems to me that if we already have root.... thus the statement above.... that it's weird that the dev's are going " We have it, but we won't use it. Lets just look for a more difficult way to do it."
My question is can a phone be rooted through a "package" where it cannot be seen how it's done? So we reap the benefits of rooting, but the "script monkeys" cannot utilize it without figuring it out for themselves? Or maybe somehow package it as an updatable update.zip? Am I missing something?

not Delvp or any thing. But i was wondering is the way the droid incredible has the internal memory 8 gbs and the way stuff is stored. could this be one of the stumbling blocks? reason i ask is vzw/htc must have noticed a problem with and had to throw in a memory card because some apps need sd card...

I agree with a previous poster, lets get this thing rooted by any means necessary and then report the loophole before anybody with the wrong intent gets ahold of it.

i'm glad the people that are actually working on it are wiser than to try that. aside from the already stated ethical reasons....
even if a kernel vulnerability were found and exploited (and subsequently patched), anyone with a patched phone wouldn't be able to root their handset. so if you were to lose your phone (or it fails), you'd be outta luck, because any replacement you receive would almost certainly be patched by htc at the factory or a verizon store.
DISCLAIMER (i may be talking out of my butt here and anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but....)
gaining su via a kernel exploit also wouldn't necessarily allow you to do stuff like unlock the bootloader or write unsigned images. in which case you wouldn't be able to write a custom recovery image, and therefore would still be unable to write non-htc signed roms to the phone (thus defeating half of the purpose for which you went through all the trouble).

It's already BEEN reported, and fixed I think. That's how we know the hole exists. The problem is that there are still tons of people out there running the exploitable kernel.

You're not the only one. I can understand why they haven't released the exploit , but people are always going to abuse things like this. Sooner or later this exploit will be found by someone else and that person may or may not use this exploit just for the DI.
That being said, I really want to root my DI.

I agree

Well heck guys, root away!
No one is stopping you.

I agree with the people that say the exploit should be used, but then again I'm not agreeing out of simple greed.
I'm agreeing because not releasing it is essentially security through obscurity which is a shaky philosophy at best. The idea that the hole isn't or won't be exploited unless it's released as a DI root is unproven.
But hey, I'm not a dev, maybe they understand the implications better than I do. If they don't want to release it then we'll have to find another method.

I rooted using this method while still on 4.1.2 and it worked flawlessly.
I then paid for and installed SuperSU Pro and activated "Survival Mode"
Lastly, after the OTA update was COMPLETELY finished, I followed this simple procedure to get root back again.
SuperSU disables Knox for you on 4.3 which is also nice. I should have qualified here that I am COMPLETELY stock other than root. I have not "frozen" any apps., deleted any Samsung provided files, etc. and I have stock bootloader and stock recovery. This will likely NOT work if you have done any of those things.
Is there a flashable version of this? If not, can somebody make one? Thanks.
I'm running a custom rom and rollouts/updates from vendors freak me out because I don't trust not one of them. Knowing AT&T they have thrown in some bit of encryption that locks the bootloader. I understand this might not be the case this time but I do know none of them can be trusted.
Now if you excuse me, I'm 1/2 done with 1984 the book and my tin foil hat is making me itch.
Guys I need help I am stuck, I am using unlock att with tmobile, I check software update but it days interrupted, and I even tried with kies but it's not connecting at all, I tried 2 pcs.... Any help... What to do to update it... Please

I have a few questions for you and/or those more in the know:
If I were to do this same thing, would I be able to flash a custom recovery (like TWRP) and/or flash custom ROM's/Kernels like I can already do now? One of my main concerns is that the stock kernel doesn't support Boeffla Sound, and that really makes for better audio on this device...might as well take full advantage of that Wolfson DAC...
I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to use pure AT&T stock, but rooted, as a base...this is why I loved the old CleanROM AT&T SE so much...
TIA for any guidance you can give on this.
Side note: after ODIN'ing back to 4.1.2 MA4, it says I have a 741MB update I can take....I'm sure that's this 4.3 update...Culpeper, VA here.

I did the same as marchusdavis but it resulted in a total disaster. After I downloaded the OTA update from AT&T I restarted my phone and it installed through CWM-Touch. At the end it asked if I wanted to ensure root was maintained and of course I said "yes" there (as well as through my SuperSU Pro Survival Mode). When it booted, my WiFi no longer works AND I lost root.
If anyway has any advice on how to get to a stock 4.3 from here please let me know!
Ugh, having trouble updating atm.
Goes up to 30%, then my phone reboots and says
"The update was interrupted" or something like that
On stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock recovery if anyone can help.

I don't believe so, as I am completely stock, bootloader and all. If you want to install other ROMs, you'd need to use a different method I believe. Likely downloading this update either via Kies or something else, and use ODIN to do everything. If you search around a bit on XDA, you'll probably find someone who has done it successfully and posted how. While I like custom ROMs, I have not had a need to use one yet on this device. However, if Samsung doesn't eventually give us Air Command, that might be enough to make me try it!
Is it possible to get the official update from the leak or do I have to downgrade to 4.1.2? I tried updating from the leak but it said it's the latest version.

80mb vs 128mb
The 80mb file is about the same size as pre 4.3 images.

If the bootloader gets corrupted on the Galaxy SIII, you can flash the image file to an SD card and get the phone to boot from a fully bricked state (phone will not power on at all). The image file must match the current bootloader that is installed. There are other threads here for previous builds with the matching image files.
(If I got something a little wrong in terminology or concept, I'm sure someone will pop in and fix anything I got mixed up on explaining. )

Unfortunately, my phone hard bricked during some testing of ND8 and now it's a paperweight as I haven't been able to get it back. I'm sure we'll see more of this going forward. I bet there were a few when 4.3 came along as well but we weren't around for that release here.
Looks like Jtag for this phone and I haven't decided what to do in the meantime to replace it; temporarily or permanently.

Edit: Additionally, I had issues getting this image to flash in Windows. I had to flash it to SD in Ubuntu. If you can still read the SD in Windows, it didn't take the flash. If the card is unreadable in Windows then maybe it flashed ok but still no guarantees it will work if the bootloader partitions are corrupted like mine were.

I was having connectivity issues so I flashed a new modem. Then, for some weird reason, I lost audio and had ZERO signal except wifi. I was advised to flash a TW rom to try and update PRL and activate the phone. I flashed Wicked Sensations, still no luck. So at that point, I was trying to flash back to non rooted using >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099. Thats when it bricked. I don't blame anyone but myself. I didn't read the ENTIRE thread before flashing and it hard bricked. Won't power on, no recovery/download mode. Light comes on with battery pulled and plugged in to USB.
I have tried all the threads and has no luck. I bought a 16g class 10 sd card. Tried many different debrick files. Tried writing with win23 and Cygwin, nothing. I am thinking I may need a different image based on my bootloader, I just have no idea which it was at the time.

[Q] Root At&t 4.4.2 Update (I467 version)

I know there aren't a ton of us At&t Note 8 Variant users out there...but the few of us that are have received an update to Kit Kat finally...
So now, I'm starting this simple question thread: - HOW CAN WE ROOT?
Just to keep track of what is tried and what doesn't work for the new update version-until we have success!
Baseband version: I467UCUBNI2
So, what have you tried and what were the results? Has anyone succeeded?
I've tried: saferoot, towelroot, kingo - none have worked.
What have you tried?

Following a thread in the Galaxy S5 forums I was able to root an S5 with Towelroot by flashing a signed (important if you don't want to trip the KNOX flag) kernel from an older firmware release, do the root, and then re-flash the signed kernel for the 4.4.2 version. I can't guaranty it work on your device, and I have the GT-N5100, but if we can extract the signed kernel from your image the pieces should be available to try it.

NOTE 3 - ROOTED
Yea, I looked at it.
You can too by using 7zip to "open archive".
Here's the root directory of the 2400258.cfg file you linked:

There is no signed "boot.img" file that could be flashed with Odin or Heimdall. When I checked the updater script a patch method is used to updated the previous kernel:
Code:
ui_print("Patching boot image...");
apply_patch("EMMC:/dev/block/mmcblk0p9:5150976:8293cf49006c35a33647cba0f6153bc8320ae5de:6080784:eaee84c0a938f101931ca0b235cbbee112c26499",
"-", eaee84c0a938f101931ca0b235cbbee112c26499, 6080784,
8293cf49006c35a33647cba0f6153bc8320ae5de, package_extract_file("patch/boot.img.p"));
Without a complete 4.4.2 version of a signed boot.img file you wouldn't be able to return to the original kernel after rooting. I wouldn't recommend the method I mentioned previously until that's available.

Thanks for taking a look. Will search for the correct boot.img file. Nothing on sammobile yet

I downloaded the update but did not install it. I put the file on my dropbox. Its a cfg file 800mb or so in size. Can anyone do anything with that so we can get root? Let me know and Ill send a link.

I would like to tinker with getting root on 4.4.2, I have the SGH-i467, but I'm having trouble even getting the OTA update.. (no longer an ATT customer)
Any way you can share a link to your download?
Thanks,

I'll leave that up to @godzulu since it's his IMG file but just want to make sure you know that you need to be 100% stock on the previous build to use that file to update to 4.4.2.

Thanks!
I just started looking for information on viable rooting methods for the i467 after the 4.4.2 update and am a little disapointed with the news i found on this post. I had hoped to find a ez method to remedy a few issues such as the ext SD storage problem.
Thanks to OP and all here working to fix the problem!! Off to research more & hopefully be able to bring something helpful back.
We waited for a LONG time to recieve ANY updates so hopefully we wont be waiting long to get root back.

Triped KNOX counter
Im not shure this will help at all but I found the error file that my tablet made after the update faild since I acedently triped the Warrenty counter in KNOX. Its from the SGH-I467 I also have the OTA file saved its 813mb. My programing skills are limited.

Lg gpad x 10.1" v930 at&t

Guys,
Am I the only person who has a 10.1? I have a stock rooted, factory SIM unlocked V930.
I love the tablet, and am really surprised. I have scoured the internet for any bootloader unlock/custom recovery interest or dev interest in general and there's nothing. Is anyone else out there with any info?
Thanks guys peace
Att locked bootloader is across the board killing development for att devices.

I first installed Titanium backup after rooting wit KingoRoot. Not to be mistakes for Kingroot!. After I froze the front-end for Kingoroot using TiBU, and installed SuperSU, I then made SuperSU a system app again through TiBU. Next step was to uninstall the Kinguser app in Its entirety. Finally, I rebooted and started Super SU, updated binaries and once again rebooted. After that SuperSU was the default and only Superuser app. I was worried and skeptical at first but it was flawlessly perfect and performed exactalr as it should have. I hope that helps.

And this works even with the marshmallow updated firmware? I just purchased mine about a week ago. If you have any links please direct me. Thanks

I can confirm that this method doesn't work anymore. Maybe it use to work on a different version of android.
Can y'all pull the marshmallow rom?
Well, too bad nothing ever materialized with a custom recovery for the v930. I really like the device. Has anyone else dug up any info? AT&T can smoke pole!

Can i possibly get a copy of your system image so i can have my v930 back? Right now i am running v935 and it doesnt have the same (32 gb)storage. It only has 16gb. Please pm me. Thanks in advance.

I to would love to get ahold of the 6.0 ota img.
I may be able to get ahold of the OTA. I have a tablet that hasn't been upgraded. How would I go about grabbing the file?

I just got this tablet and love it too.
I've also scoured the internet and can't find much on it as well.
The only thing that confuses me is the IR BLASTER doesn't seem to be turned on via the software.
Anyone else seeing that?
My LG G Pad X was rooted with kingroot and now I can't update to Marshmallow. Is there any way to get around this? Or am I screwed? I tried the update tool and nothing came from it.
LG V935 root Success
Hello, I used Kingroot to try a long time, have not been successful, today, I found that China's 360root is very good tool. Incredibly successful. I feel very happy. Although there is no superusu tool, but now it has the highest authority, I am still very happy.

Can you put me in the direction of the V935 image that you mention? I've bricked my V930 by using the wrong version of Kingroot (don't use the new version 5) and there doesn't seem to be any V930 images anywhere on this planet. Right now I'd settle for anything that will give my V930 some wheels again. A V935 image would do the job just fine. Many thanks.

Install Flashfire and run it, or use nandroid on a windows computer. Either will do the job nicely. And you will be the first to help all those ppl with bricked V930 tablets )
Do that first and then we can give you instructions on the next step. Many thanks, John.
Someone grab the 6.0 update please

Flashing combination file to S10, 10+ and other without using etoken

I came across interesting method for flashing combination files to s10 and s10+, which I have tested and it actually worked really good.
This works only for devices that are Exynos based...
I am still working on putting things together to create DIY guid, because the process is really dangerous, and at one point you will kill your device.
Are you guys interested in this topic or it is just a waste of time?

i know its been quite a while but yes, it works. I also have a way on usa snapdragon devices to flash combo on s10 s10+ and note devices..
i also have method/files for various exynos devices from F variants mainly of a10 a50 note 10 etc.
Both methods require special files.. exynos files u can find some places online but need to purchase them.. snap files are not available anywhere online and if u can find a source they also charge a lot for the files.
Seeing as how theres still no methods or services that provide this I was thinking about getting into but still learming how it would work remotely.
Also, both methods are a bit risky but given all the times ive used it I'd say its pretty safe if you know what youre doing.
Because the snap files are propietary and need to be leaked or obtained from samsung servers I am afraid they cannot be posted. Could potentially lead to legal issues or dmca takedown notices for example.
If anyone is interested, shoot a pm or hit me up on tgram.
Keep in mind factory firmware isnt useable as a daily and mainly used for security researchers such as myself or ppl looking to repair, bypass frp, change csc and other stuff or even repair imei etc etc.
Also if anyone is hard bricked I can most likely fix that as well.
I'm definitely interested.

Okay get it ! What more do I need? I have an exynos model?
Should I contact you by pm or whatsapp?
Found a video where they are able to flash a pre-root binary by "bricking" the phone and then are able to install magisk and also unlock oem.
Think that would work the same way to install the combination firmware, right?

Sounds like you have an Exynos loader for those models. Cause a hard brick, and load combination using exynos loader and board diag tools
