Does anyone know how to backup our rooted stock phones before we start running other roms ?
i think we need a recovery with nandroid before we can really do that, i think clockwork had nandroid so we just need to make that the recovery mode and we should be ok

Was just wondering what all goes into a nandroid backup or other bootable saves and perhaps if it was possible for someone to create a rooted 2.1 with nothing on it upload it then move it to my phone and recover off of it. Or are these things very phone sensitive?
Maybe its still early for me but why wouldn't you just download the stock rooted rom?
It sounds like you are on stock 2.2 without root. Is that correct? If so this is not possible because you need a custom recovery to flash nandroid backups.

Hey guys, this is a really simple question, but was not able to find a simple answer for this.
I'm running stock rooted and am thinking about trying a new ROM, the question is:
1) when I do a backup of current ROM through clockworkmod recovery, does this back up all my apps? or do I need to use mybackup pro or titanium to backup my apps as well as the clockwork backup?
2) if I decide that I do not like the new ROM, can I just go restore from clockworkmod and recover my old ROM (stock) or will I need to flash the RUU file to get back to stock?
Sorry for the noob type questions, just wanna make sure I am squared away to get into these custom ROMs

1) Your apps are backuped, it creates an exact image of your phone at that point. If you do a full wipe then thats when Titanium backup comes in handy.
2) Restoring a nand backup as long is the stock rom backup you want will get you back up and running.
You will need Titanium backup or mybackup if ur gonna flash a new ROM. The nandroid will backup apps, but only useful when you restore back to that nandroid. To restore ur apps after flashing a new ROM, you will need titanium.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm a little confused. I'm aware of all the S-OFF, permarooting etc and the necessary ways to get them. Before I go through with these guides however, I'd like a backup of some sort.
I know ClockworkMod is a custom recovery and you can perform nandroid backups with it, but I also understand there is a default recovery mode you can access from the bootloader that can also do that. Obviously I'd like to make a full nandroid backup before I make any permanent changes.
However, when I select 'Recovery' from the bootloader, my phone goes to a black screen with a generic phone icon and a red ! in a triangle. Why could this be? It is a standard UK T-Mobile Desire Z with no modifications aside from a Gfree S-OFF that was reversed again by copying the backup partition back.
That is the splashscreen of the stock recovery. Press Vol-Up and Power to get past that screen - but you won't be able to do a nandroid unless you have a custom recovery installed - sorry!
Thanks very much for that info. So there's no way of making a nandroid backup before I do things like permarooting? Will the unroot option in Visionary reverse that?
Presumably there's a way of reverting from ClockworkMod to the stock recovery?
the only time you will be able to make a backup is when you install clockwork. No clockwork no backup.
Use titanium backup for the settings and apps and then install clockwork and then do nandroid. if that doesnt work you have your TB to restore.
You can also try to "adb pull /system" and pull everything to your desktop.,... but pushging it back will require skillz.
If you want to revert from clockwork to stock recovery you need to flash stock recovery but do not do it with an incompatible rom.

Don't worry about the fact you can't do a nandroid backup before you root the phone, because it's easy enough to un-root.
You can do the nandroid backup as soon as you've got root/S-OFF, installed ROM Manager and flashed Clockwork recovery. It's very important to do this before you flash any sort of custom ROM. I am amazed by the number of people who seem to flash a custom ROM straight away with no backup whatsoever !
Hey, this may seem like a silly question but i would rather ask it than brick my device.
I have rooted and s-off my stock rom, i have installed all my apps and settings and ive got it just the way i like it. i have created a nandroid backup using clockwork mod.
I now want to try Gingervillian rom, ive got titanium backup to install all the apps back and that but what i want to know is:
Will i be able to restore my stock rom from the nandroid backup with all my apps and setting in tact, even though s-off is set and its rooted. i know a read somewhere that flashing a stock rom on a phone with s-off can semi-brick it... so will clockwork recovery do the same?
When you make a 'nandroid' backup via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, it makes essentially a carbon copy of the current setup of your ROM (not your radio, S-Off status, etc.). Literally everything is perfectly as you have it now. It just like doing a full HDD backup of your computer.
When you restore this backup, it simply brings back your ROM from exactly how it was. There is no effect on your root or S-off, or your radio.
So, if you do a nandroid backup, then wipe the device and flash another ROM i.e. Gingervillain, and make a nandroid of that, you can then freely switch back and forth between the 2 (or more) recoveries via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, with no issues.
The issues with bricking as you're referring to are if you for some reason try to somehow flash a non-rooted ROM, which would most definitely cause issues. In order to get back your phone to stock-stock-stock-stock (unroot and S-on), you will need to follow unroot instructions and flash an official unrooted RUU/PC10IMG.zip to get back to everything as it came out of the box.

I am currently using cm10 with hellboy kernel and have a cvm backup of stock rom. I was wondering if *touchwood* something were to happen to the custom rom will a simple recovery be enough to get back to sense? or is there some kernel which will have to be flashed first? or is ruu the only way of going back to sense?
if u have a nandroid backup of stock ROM u can restore it and flash the boot.img found inside that particular backup.if u do not have a stock backup u will have to apply ruu or u can even restore nandroid backups of stock ROM found on XDA.
