[Q] When connected to HSPA+, does the 3G in the status bar change to an H? - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When connected to HSPA+, does the 3G in the status bar change to an H? I'm hearing conflicting things.

the only time i have seen the H is when i am on legend it switches frequently between 3G and H, i know in my area there is one HSPA+ tower(only spot i get more than 1Mbps) but it's literally 50 feet out of range from work

Hmm, I just called T-Mobile and they kept telling me it doesn't change to an H. Guess I'll keep an eye on it and keep running speedtest. They said it's just lighting up around my area as of today.

No, your 3G icon does not switch to an H. The only time it would switch to an H is if you have a custom rom. If I recall correctly there was talk about HSPA using the same icon as the 3G icon, so the Legend rom tubaking is using must have the H icon for hspa

Thanks. I remember some of those Hero roms on the G1 would use an H instead of 3G.

In the documentation for the Slide from HTC's website that is specific to T-Mo, it does list "H" as an option under the Phone status icons section. It lists G (GSM), E (Edge), 3G (3G) and H (HSPA) as valid options. Doesn't mean the H will actually show up, though.

Im in Minnesota and we have no HSPA tower yet but when i was using a custom rom on my G1 i did see the H

You'll see the H because the same icon is used for HSDPA 7.2 and HSPA+. When CM had the H icon in his rom I saw it frequently on my G1, but he's removed it since then.

It changes on my Galaxy Tab with Euro firmware, but the H is not listed on the SGT-T849 (P1000) TMO

I always thought the H meant HSPA not HSPA+ for non-HSPA+ compatible phones. It just indicates the phone is HSPA compatible, but not HSPA+, they're 2 different things.

I think the H is HSDPA or HSUPA, not the HSPA+...Because the MT 3GS can't use the HSPA+..
I saw the H every day, in China ,most place have the HSDPA..It's more quickly than UMTS...

H is for HSDPA
And, just in case you are curious, WIKIPEDIA has a nice article on HSDPA.

yep check that right after i found out what the H icon was for.
is 3g HSDPA or H/HSDPA an improvment over 3g/UMTS?
from what i read on the wiki its seems so...
every time i connect to a stream(slingbox, live lakecam it will change the icon to H from 3g.
any real reason to that is it switching for a better connection?

HSDPA is also known as 3.5G, so it's like 3G on steroids

In the UK, HSDPA is not available on all networks and coverage is patchy at best - maybe your streaming is too much for it, so it drops back to 3G/UMTS to get a better (slower, but more reliable) connection.
Just my $0.02
Mark.
HSDPA is only initiated when needed to conserve network resources, which is why when you will see it goto H when you are streaming and 3g when browsing.

What does the H stand for on the network?

I've seen E for EDGE, 3G and at home I always have H, but next to T-Mobile it says 3G. What does the H stand for/represents?
hsdpa, its the fastest out of the lot
wiki
That explains why when I'm home and on the net it's just as fast as if I was connected to WIFI. I don't even connect to my WIFI at home anymore because H is pretty fast.
Thanks for the reply.
at least yours shows those icons. mine doesn't. I only know what i'm connected to when i actually connect & it shows in the signal bars. & i disabled showing 3G next to tmobile because that was just annoying.
haven't encountered the H here in phoenix either.

I believe that the "H" will depend on the icon pack that you pick. I'm trying to recall if I saw an "H" when I had the stock T-Mobile icons or if it was just "3G" instead.

I think you're right because when I had the T-Mobile stock ROM I had no H it was just 3G. Until I got the Europe MW 6.5 ROM I saw it and now I'm on the EnergyROM.
yes i only started seeing the H after i installed the 1% battery on the stock rom.
It stands for HSDPA which in turn stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access
My 3G is faster than your 4G
If and when you see your buddy bragging about hdmi in their HTC EVO, the H on hour phone allows you to quip back:
[bold] "My 3G is faster than your 4G" [/bold]
here's the proof:

H = HSDPA
H+ = HSPA+ (On the T-Mobile G2, which is considered 4G for T-Mobile)

T-Mobile HSDPA

I just purchased T-Mobile's version of the Touch Pro 2 about a week ago. I moved from AT&T and the TyTN II.
On the TyTN II, whenever I was on HSDPA, the connection icon would display an H. On my Touch Pro 2, I only ever see a "3G" icon. However, my connection settings are set to use HSDPA/HSUPA. I have unlimited web service, for what's it's worth.
Is this normal? Am I in fact getting HSDPA service? If not, is it a registry fix? Is there anyway to check for sure what protocol I'm connected with?
I would like to know that as well, Its normal same thing on my tmo tp2
I see the "H" symbol, but only when actively downloading data. It switches back and forth which I think is a good thing. No problems on this end running the stock T-Mo ROM
yeah I kept getting the 3G icon too, but after i put on tsowen's taskbar, now I get the H & i don't think i've seen the 3G at all.

I have only seen the H icon after installing a custom taskbar as well. I'm not sure if it just replaced the 3G icon right out or if it is correctly displaying it.
My g1 displayed 3g when i had the t-mobile firmware on it. When i put a different one, H or something was displayed. The tp2 i have is the same way. I put a different firmware on it and it went from 3g to H now. I am not using the t-mobile firmware but one of the 6.5 roms. I would bet t-mobile put the 3g icon on purpose.
H and 3G are the same thing on the phone. It just depends on what your ROM is setup to show it as.

they are not the same:
3G = 364 Kbps
HSDPA (3.5G) = 1.5-3 Mbps
i get at least 650kbps with 3G only icon. So i think im on the H

I was referring to the phone just showing 3G or H not the actual speeds.
I'm in the same boat as you guys. When I was on the stock ROM I only saw 3G with 2 bars and this was at my house. Now that I'm on a cooked ROM, I see H all the time with my 2 bars at my house. I only get the H when I'm at home, but when I'm at work I get 3G with full bars. I don't even have the option to use HSDPA checked, I have it unchecked in the options.
I'm sure the H has to do with the cooked ROMs or custom taskbars. Idk!

Is there any way to disable automatic switching between UMTS and HSDPA?

In my apartment my G2 constantly switches back and forth between UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (H). Is there any way to stop this? Both look like they have the same number of bars, but it seems like UMTS is way slower. I also should be in a 4G market, so is there a way to tell if I'm on HSPA+ or not?
I've honestly never even seen the 3g icon on my g2. whenever im in kent, when it drops it drops from h, to E

I don't think the stock G2 ROM has a specific icon for 3G, if that's what your'e on. It shows H for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+.
I think the original poster is on Cyanogen, where it does show the type of connection a bit more accurately.
I'd also be interested in trying to force an HSPA connection. I don't think Bell has UMTS data so if I'm labeled as on 3G I can make calls and texts but have to wait for it to switch to H when I start using data.
It's a feature of cyanogenmod that it switches to 3G when heavy data is not required and switches to H+ when you need a faster data connection
That is of course if your running CM on your phone...

It's not a "feature" of CyanogenMod. This also happens on the stock ROM but we do not see the H icon, only the 3G one. Cyanogen himself explained this a while back.

You mean stock sees only the H icon, not the 3G one XD
Also note that if you're not actively using data, it'll show the 3G symbol (on Cyanogen or Sense ROMs) - as soon as you start a connection, it'll switch to an H. This isn't necessarily because the phone is switching between a 3G and HSPA signal, but rather because 3G is also used to carry voice - so if the phone isn't using HSPA for data, it obviously doesn't need to show it.
Thanks for all of the information, guys!

[Q] Does the GNex have H+?

I'm on the 3 UK network and my SGS2 would show H+ when I'm at work. The GNex only shows H. Is it actually connecting at H+ and not showing it? Does it show H+ differently?
Why don't you run a speedtest to see if you are getting HSPA+ speed? Previous Vanilla Android doesn't show the H symbol at all, just the 3G symbol.

It supports 21 MB HSDPA
so defo yes
Hmm, I'm on 3Uk as well, but speed test shows that I'm only getting 0.3~0.5mbps, even with the H symbol...
Is there something wrong with my settings?

most likely issues with your coverage area.
It has 21mbps HSPA+. Who cares what the status bar says?

The H+ icon is a result of Samsung adding their own icon.

It's true that stock builds usually just show it as 3G. It's just a single value you enable the option in AOSP though. It was probably initially not set to the default because some older devices with older radios and RILs didn't differentiate between them so the OS had no way to know.
I have seen H but not H+ yet. Someone with a galaxy S2 managed to get H+ 5.2mbps in my house. Fastest I have so far is 4.8mbps. It keeps switching between H and 3G though.

Those custom icons just seem useless to me. I have no problem getting 5 Mbit/s on normal HSPA (ie. out of a theoretical 7.2 Mbit/s) in my apartment.
The reason the icons switches from 3G to H and back is because it will go back to normal UMTS when the connection is idle. It's totally normal.
