Memory Booster - great app for memory management - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Just thought I would share this app I stumbled upon today called Memory Booster. Can be found in the market for free, but if you want to unlock it's full features such as 'Whitelist', you will have to purchase the pro version through Pay Pal. I have tried many task killers looking for the best app that can manage my RAM. I found this by far to be the best. Any apps you do not want terminated, just add them to the whitelist. This is very similar to Auto Memory Manager, however, the whitelist actually works. Try it out and post your feedback. I hope it helps some of you. Below is a link that describes it's features on Download Android webpage.
http://downloadandroid.info/2010/05...id-ram-optimizer-to-speed-up-your-smartphone/

Nice, but
This is nice app. But after adjusting internal task manager using AutoKiller, personally I don't see any need for any other third party memory manager...

I never tried automatic task killer. What settings would be used for optimal performance? Would like to give it a try. Thanks.

You do need to root the device, but then you can just set it to aggressive or strict profile. Both settings worked quit good for me...
ps: if you have rooted device, perhaps you don't even need any task manager optimization when you do data -> dbdata tweak...

Thanks for the app recommendation. I've been using it for a few hours now, and I already see a difference in the performance of the phone. I must say, so far, finding it better then Memory Booster. Thanks again.

Thanks bigbuffalo for recommendation. I am David, the developer of MemoryBooster. Memory Booster is one of our popular apps. If you have any suggestions please feel free to share here and I will tell my tech team. We will work together to make Memory Booster a better use for our users. Here are some screenshots:

Nice to see you here Davidandroid, I'm off to check and see if the program is going to be useful, I'm currently running no memory/task management utilities.

Never tried that one.
Currently I'm using auto memory manager and its running fine. With other task killers sometimes my home screen (widgets) was cleared and reloaded in a sec, even setting up whitelists...

AutoKiller is doing a great job and since android itself has a memory manager buildin no need for other tools.

It works great but it kind of froze my screen so I had to take battery out and uninstall cause i downloaded from internet. Htc evo 4g. Please fix

tested. this is yet another app killer that will kill even desktop apps causing them to reload. yet need to upgrade to use *auto* boosting...meaning in free version we have to click the nice little button within the app........
im settled with auto memory killer again. thanks though.

I want to ask whether this application is the same as Task Killer?
If it is different, can you explain in which way it is different?
Thanks.

will try it and return back with feedback

These two apps are totally different from the following aspects:
-Task killer mostly works when your device is in sleep mode.
-Memory Booster analyzes the idle processes in the background and will kill them while boosting.
-Memory Booster has auto boost function which can boost automatically at the boost threshold you set.
-and more…
And I suggest you to install the Memory Booster Lite and check how it works.

If you install Memory Booster, you can save more battery. I suggest that you disable the Battery Smart Saver in BatteryBooster if you used together with Memory Booster.

[Q] Best optimizations for 3D gaming

Right now I'm running FXP054 with the kernel OC'd to 1.4GHz. I also have cut down on a lot of running services in the background through the Autostarts app [ https://market.android.com/details?id=com.elsdoerfer.android.autostarts ].
What would be the best governor, I/O scheduler, & OC for the CM7.2.0 CDMA kernel?
What build.prop settings should I apply to get the most out of 3D gaming?
Any other options/settings/apps that I should be aware of for better gaming performance in general on my Xperia Play?
I'd greatly appreciate any insight. Thanks.
Download the Ram Manager pro app from the market. Use the default balance option when not gaming and use the hard gaming option when gaming.
I've tried all tweaks and zips and governors and everything possible. This application has made the biggest difference so far. Especially the lock home launcher option.
How much of a difference between that & the v6 Supercharged script in terms of performance?

Night and day. It's very difficult to give empirical evidence, so metaphors are about the best you'll get from me
V6 supercharger had zero to little effect overall. It did lock the launcher SOMETIMES, but other than that had very little effect on performance.
Ram manager pro is giving me a lot of performance and the different profiles are very clear and understandable. Unlike the vague and ambiguous settings on the supercharger.
I'll have to try that app out. How well does it do with Gameloft games? I tried Asphalt 6 last night & it ran well for a while until it decided to slow to a crawl on screen. I'm aiming to get a consistent gaming experience regardless of 2D or 3D.

That app actually doess nothing at all for the launcher.
Its the grouping shift without changing a single priority.
Its all about aggressive task killing without user input and that's it.
Use Update 9 RC4 as it has more options for high ram devices and makes recommendations based on ram.
Sounds like you used Update 8.

I did indeed use update 8. I will give the latest a try.
You say it does nothing for the launcher but I'm seeing some fantastic results i.e the launcher literally never dies.
It had to redraw once after playing modern combat 3, and the whole phone slowed to a crawl unexpectedly for 10 seconds and then back to normal. Other than that the application has been great.
Using the script, the launcher died regardless of which setting I chose even when it said I had a "hard to kill" launcher or whatever. It would work for a while but redraws were too common. Also, all tutorials seemed based around motorola phones so I had difficulty finding what options would suit mine the best.
Regardless, I'm grateful for fantastic devs like you, and this script is undeniably innovative. Expect a donation at the end of the month
EDIT:
IGNORE EVERYTHING I SAID EARLIER, HOLY CRAP UPDATE 9 RC4 IS DAMN GOOD.
Seriously, I uninstalled Ram Manager pro, it's totally unnecessary.
Supercharger update 9 RC4 using option 6 has been flawless for me.

What apps should be bullet-proofed? I'm using script for the purpose of getting better gaming performance.
I just uploaded an RC5 test so try that
I meant the launcher... so if you eve get any redraw, pick bulletproof launcher so it can't be killed but then again if you don't have enough ram to load big games then the default die hard launcher is good enough... it should still almost never happen.

I started using RC5-test last night. It works really well. I noticed that it now has the Cust-OOM calc settings, which I'll apply tonight & see how it runs.
I really like how well done it is. I'll have to test out a few games this week.

Hi Zeppelin!
I would to test now Update 9 RC5. What ins the best Option for Play. On Update 8 i use Option 6 or 9 (MegaRam 2) but 6 feels smoother in the Launcher & UI.

Test the calculated values as they are based on your actual ram.
I added that feature for device that fell between the HP group settings.
I tried to calculate balanced values but course you can tweak them to be more or less aggressive by playing with the slot 3 value as that has the biggest effect on typical free ram.
The other great addition is the auto calculated min_free_kbytes value so that you won't ever get too low on free ram while allowing for apps to be cached for speed.
Thanks for answer. I now use Option 10 Custom Settings on U9 RC5. Launcher is Die Hard.

a multi tasking soft key or recent apps soft key?
The reason I am asking is because when I swipe up all the apps, it displays no recent apps.
When I swipe an app does that mean it is killed or simply removed from the recent apps list?
If it does kill apps, then is it good for the phone to just kill apps everytime?
Someone plz answer.
Thanks.
When you swipe it kills the app. This is good.

But is it good for your phone, because using task killers are bad for ur phone and this is similar, hence it has the same effect right?
At least it keeps your phone's ram fresh in my opinions.

Using automated task killers is bad for your phone. Closing/killing applications that you're no longer using is fine - it's the same thing (in theory) that happens when you exit an application by pressing the Back button.

"Good" or "bad" is subjective. This has the effect of closing unwanted programs if you feel they're not necessary. You should never feel like you must use it for closing things. It isn't at all necessary to monitor these tasks. You can use it to just switch tasks if you'd like.

I'd tend to agree with this methodology. Just don't use auto task killers. Android does a better job managing RAM than you think.
Swiping those apps away kills apps but not their services. Yes it is running apps not recent apps i dont think.
On other devices I used Go Launcher for its task killer in the app tray. My kid is 5 and loads one game after another. When I get my device back (Nexus, Transformer, or Galaxy Tab) its dog slow. Lol.
I like to clean out my apps every day or so. Not a big deal but you can notice a difference is speed. Running apps can eat battery too. So I like to wipe them out. Auto Task killers are bad because its a running app itself. Just wastes more battery.

Auto task killers are bad because they interfere with how Android was designed to manage memory - killing a bunch of processes that Android had idling in the background just means that Android will spent time/power starting those tasks back up when you're not looking.

Google Maps - old version killable in running processes

Found an old working version that was killable in running processes.
Been looking for this for a while and naturally it was right under my nose here at xda
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12890318&postcount=222
somewhere right around version 5.4 or 5.5 they modified the app to never die, when stopped from running services.
got sick of freezing the app in titanium after every use...and just stopped using it
now this old version 5.3.1 is killable right from running processes.
no more unauthorized big brother data collecting, thanks though for offering.
to install use root explorer and replace maps.apk with this version (rename it to maps.apk) in /system/app
then reboot, it will automatically install.
uninstall your current version with titanium backup first.
the latest google maps can be force closed from the app list...
its a little more menu navigating than desired to kill each time but i guess it works.
v5.3.1 can be killed from running processes and is a good solution if you dont need some minor features of the latest version
to create a widget to running processes, long press the home screen, select shortcuts, scroll to settings, select 'running processes'
just tested 5.4.0 and it remained in running processes after stopping
so this is it...for the weary...use 5.3.1
you need autorun manager. it keeps most apps from starting up on their own. works for me with the latest version of google maps.
and then you always have autorun manager, running...
one more thing i dont need

its not a task killer that needs to be running. it modifies apps by taking away thier autostart permissions. you close it after youre done, and thats basically it.
I have the most update google maps and its never in running processes. I read somewhere that unchecking everything gps related you'll be able to close it.
Your problem could be you have apps the poll your location every so often. Even if you have gps off it'll use cell towers and get a approx. Location.
Try going into location settings and unchecking these boxes.
Specifically Googles Location Services that grants apps premission to find you.

just a shame i should have to spend money on the pro version for my phone to behave the way i desire.

Double post.
jdee i tried autorun manager and was unable to make it die from 'running processes'
i tried disabling receivers and also chuck norris mode.
the only way i was able to kill it was to use 'force stop' in the 'ALL' app list manager
i guess this works, just a little more menu navigation than desired.
autorun manager is useless at killing maps, unless i'm missing a setting.
also autorun manager did indeed start itself after i closed it
Am I the only person who gets great battery life and performance (even on cm9) and doesn't have to modify/kill/force stop/freeze/remove apps/remove auto start permissions/disable apps/disable services/disable functions for anything? [Q] Galaxy W RAM Management

I want to ask you guys how did you solve problems with ram on our phone, because it's the only thing i found bad. I'm using V6 supercharger on a stock rom for a while now and it is a slight improvement in smoothness but games sometimes lag. On custom roms ram management is much better but they're mostly lighter than touchwiz which is eating RAM. Is there any better solution for stock roms or that's all we got?

On CM9, you can enable KSM (Kernel Samepage Merging), which gives you about 15-20 MB additional usable RAM, through deduplicating memory pages.
Until Alpha 5, there were 364 MB RAM available on CM, with Alpha 6 it now decreases to 352 due to buffer/shared memory requierements from 720p recording.
OP asks about Stock ROM.....
CM9 def not Stock!!
IMHO, V6 works well on Stock GB...that's what I have, and it flies, of course along with KAK and 3G Turbocharger also from Zepp...

Right..
Although, there might be a little chance, that KSM is included in the stock kernel, one could try it by executing
echo 1 > /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
There are some scripts, like the Supercharger, that modifiy minfree values and OOM groupings.
You can try those, but from what i have seen of it, you jump out of the frying pan into the fire in many use cases, so i wouldn't agree to the hype around them.
However, if you got the time for some experimenting, you can give it a try.
Generally:
- Have a clean base installation (no modifications left from various "tuning runs")
- Install only the apps you really nead, with special regard to resource-intensive background apps such as Facebook, Widgets etc.
- Look out for the enhancements available in your ROM, like KSM, zRam, (normal) swapping etc.
- Don't use automatic task killers
- You might also experiment with LMK values (e.g. through the scipts mentioned) etc., althouth be aware what your focus is: multitasking, games, no launcher redraws. Many settings here are trade-offs.
There's another easy way is to install ROM toolbox from playstore. Go to performance page and use the auto memory manager. Remember this is only for rooted stock, and need to install in the internal memory not SD card. After choose the option that you want, do check apply on boot. It will work like v6 script also.

This is a good apps to define how u gonna use the system. For RAM management , please make sure u know what to run at the critical part and whats not. The best practice is to maintain usage of a few apps that will be stalled as running apps. Clear ur rams once its getting slow or when it reach 300 for instance.

Like I said, it uses a modification of my OOM grouping fix.
The priority of the launcher doesn't change it only moves the launcher down a slot.
You'd get the same effect with lower minfrees.

My tab s 8.4 eat a lot or ram always 2gb in use wile their is no app is running? Why is that?
a lot of apps running on background
1 GB is also reserved for vnswap
vnswap what that mean?
It's just caching. This is a part of efficient memory management and not a problem. People who think it is don't understand usually. For common tasks, storing info in RAM is more efficient. System doesn't need to get it from SD which takes longer and uses more power.
That's a pretty simplistic way to put it but you should let your OS manage memory and use that 3GB to its fullest.

Well, Android is and was always using "empty" RAM as a file cache. How is this different and less efficient than Samsung's approach?

Reducing the amount of VNSWAP via Synapse in your kernel to 1 doesn't seem to do anything to the amount of RAM in use. So, do I something wrong or do I still don't get it?
EDIT: Sorry if my posting reads a bit harsh, it is certainly not meant that way Language barrier and stuff...

It's not supposed to.
Reading from v1.4 Change-log
synapse: Memory: VNSWAP control (1>1024 MB - Unable to disable (reset) / set size to 0 yet)

It does change the size of the VNSWAP but doesn't reclaim the reserved RAM yet. Need to find a way as I quoted. I don't want to disable it fully in compile, i want to have tweakable options
Anyway, is OT from OP question and instead kernel development related.

I think it's probably some rogue app.. Go to Settings --> Application Manager and "Running Application" to see what's running int he background. But if it does not slow down your tablet, it should be fine. Just like my Mac, it uses tons of memory but OSX have such great memory management that my Mac still runs well.

Huh? That doesn't make sense at all. Android doesn't do that, it's probably more of rogue app. See https://developer.android.com/tools/debugging/debugging-memory.html
great, now my tablet plays rogue on its own...lol

What he said. Every android device I get has a thread with people complain about ram usage. Android is based on Linux. Unlike Windows, Linux uses as much ram as possible all of the time to run smoother.
