How long does it take to boot into recovery mode? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just rooted my HTC using the simple 1-2-3 method just posted last night.
Everything worked well, and now I'd like to load custom roms but after getting into fast boot - when I select recovery - it just displays the htc icon with the red exclamation mark -
I waited about 5 minutes and had to take the battery out and reboot to get into android.
What am I doing wrong?
The instructions were to hold volume down + power, choose fast boot - then select recovery - wait for phone to boot into recovery mode and then select the custom rom I want to load...

Im not familiar with the rooting method you use but the reason you get that screen is because you do not have a custom recovery it seems. If the guide you used involved unlocking nand, you may want to make sure you properly unlocked it and flashed a custom recovery. You can also try Rom manager from the market, as that will allow you to easily boot into a custom recovery from within the app

not quite sure, but when you get to that exclaimation point screen, press volume up + power, and it will take you to a recovery screen. if whatever method you used involved installing a recovery, you probably have clockwork. so press the volume up + power, then go to "apply zip" or something, then "apply update.zip", and if you have that update.zip file on your sd card, will boot up clockwork. from there you should be able to flash roms.
either that, or you are not supposed to boot recovery from fastboot

I have tried bootloader returns me to same screen, sometimes a see recovery in the list, but it also returms me to same screen
from a volume down and power on I get a menu with five items: FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE, SIM LOCK, HBOOT USB.
I don't where or how to proceed.
Must be a problem with ROM Manager, you're the second person to post this today.

CM6 Bootloader Loop Error! EVO 4G

I Have An Evo 4G, Rooted With UnrEVOked Forever. Used Rom Manager to Install Clockmod Recovery And To Install Cyanogen Mod 6. Before This, I Put a PC36IMG zip that had Splash1 in it, from the unrevoked site and instead of saying HTC EVO 4G in a bright white screen, its UNREVOKED with bright white screen. it then goes into a cyanogen mod bootloader animation that i got off the market called Boot changer lite or something? and it loops over and over showing either the cyanogen mod title, or it just gets to the cyan dude with a skateboard but freezes. i tried putting different PC36IMG files and using clockmod recovery to push it on sd and load it, but it says
-- Installing: /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing Update...
Installation Aborted.
HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Flash a stock rooted ROM from http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/ and then using ROM Manager, flash the alternate recovery (Amon_RA Recovery 1.8.0), then download CyanogenMod 6.1.2 ( http://goo-inside.me/cm/supersonic/stable/ ), copy it to the root of your SD card, remove any PC36IMG.zip, boot into recovery, and flash the ZIP from there.
how do i use rom manager when my screen is looping the boot animation over and over? i can flash stock rooted rom using clockwork recovery 3.0.0.2, and flash the recovery amon_RA? im sorry i am a noob and i would ask for step by step, not very detailed but to where i can know what to do first, if you have time?
1) Flash the stock rooted 3.70.651.1 ROM from my link above (here it is again), via ClockworkMod Recovery.
I'm going to assume you have an older phone with the older partition structure. For more information, and to tell what structure you have, check out this thread once you complete Step 1, before you do Step 2. I'm also going to assume you have the Android SDK installed and set up. If you do, just open your Command Prompt, cd to your SDK\platform-tools folder, and run the command "adb shell cat /proc/mtd" (without the quotes). If you see an erase size of 20000, then continue. If you see 40000, STOP and let us know.
DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE THE NEW PARTITION ERASE SIZE OF 40000!
2) Once you boot up into the ROM, download ROM Manager from the Market, if it's not already included in the ROM. You will of course have to add your Google account in order to access the Market.
3) Open ROM Manager, scroll to the bottom, and tap "Flash Alternate Recovery"
4a) Once it has finished flashing, download CyanogenMod 6.1.2 using your browser at the above link (here's the link again). You'll want the file update-cm-6.1.2-Supersonic-signed.zip.
4b) Also download the attached FORMAT_ALL.zip. This will help ensure you don't have any files from Sense accidentally carry over into CM.
4c) Finally, download the latest HDPI Google Apps package from here (the latest one has a link at the top of the page, and is the gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip file).
5a) If you downloaded via your phone, use a file manager of your choice (I like Root Explorer, but there's free ones like OI File Manager in the Market) to move the three ZIPs from /sdcard/download/ to /sdcard/ (aka, the root of your SD card).
5b) If you downloaded via your computer, attach your phone to your computer via USB, turn on Disk mode, and copy the three ZIP files to the root of your SD card.
6) Power off your phone, then hold down Volume Down and Power to turn it back on. If you're taken to a white screen with skating Androids on the bottom (aka, hboot), then press Volume Down until RECOVERY is highlighted, then press the power button.
7) You should now be at a black screen with yellow text. This is Amon_RA recovery. Press Volume Down until you highlight Backup/Restore, and press Power. Press Volume Down and highly Nand Backup, and press Power again. Press Power one more time to confirm the start of the backup. It'll then take a few minutes to perform the backup (depending on how fast your SD card is).
8) Once it's done, you'll be back at the Backup/Restore menu. Make sure Return is highlighted, then press Power. Press Volume Down until Flash zip from sdcard is highlighted, then press Power to select it. Use Volume Down to highlight FORMAT_ALL.zip and press Power twice to select it, then confirm the flash.
9) Once that's done, scroll back to Flash zip from sdcard, then select update-cm-6.1.2-Supersonic-signed.zip. Press Power twice to select then confirm it.
10) Finally, go back to the Flash zip from sdcard menu one last time, highlight gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip, and press power twice to select and confirm.
11) Finally, select Reboot phone now, and wait. The first boot will be a few minutes (it has to rebuild its caches), but after it's loaded, the Tutorial "Welcome to your PC36100" screen will show up. Congratulations, you have CyanogenMod!
thanks aloottt mate! cm6 is runnning amazing, but where can i get my gapps back? just the gapps, i downloaded "youtube" and "mail!" but i click the app and it says Force Close Everytime? i have angry birds and all from custom downloads and theyre fine, just the gapps is what i want. can i get the market at least? or a substitute like appbrain?
If you followed the directions I gave, it tells you to download the gapps package, and flash it. Make sure you flash the HDPI package only, not the MDPI or MDPI-tiny.

[Q] Recovery and/or Wipe not working.

OK, so I have my wife's old Incredible that was Rooted with Unrevoked. It was kept stock Rooted.
She got an Incredible 2 and I now want to sell her old Incredible. Tried to Wipe data and SD Card using the Data and Storage Settings menu. The phone acts like it is doing both things, but doesn't actually format the SD Card, and when doing a Factory Reset, the phone reboots and acts like it is wiping the data. When it boots back up, her background is still there and there are a bunch of widgets that say "Problem Loading Widget" on them. It does seem to remove some items as email accounts are reset, GMail, etc. are all wiped.
So, I reboot into Recovery to try and reflash the stock Radio, put S-On, and install the stock ROM, but no matter what I choose in Clockwork Recovery, I get a "blank" screen after choosing a menu item. For example, when I go to "Install Zip from Sdcard," It will take the input and where it would normally ask what Zip I want to install, it only shows the background of CWR. If I try to Wipe Data, where normally it would have all the menu options with "NO" and the one that says "Yes - Wipe Data," that menu never shows up.
So, I can't fully wipe the thing, and I can't seem to flash stock Boot, Recovery, etc. to get this back to stock so I can sell it.
Any ideas?
I'll try helping you out.
1) download a new Incredible recovery from dougpiston.com/ and follow his directions above the downloads.
2) reboot into hboot (you can also turn off phone then hold vol down + power). It should prompt for an update, which you should accept. Let your phone do it's thing, it may take several minutes or longer.
3) Once you have a new recovery, delete that PB31IMG recovery file.
Your recovery should work as expected now. Btw, where did you download the s-on file from?

I downloaded both the Stock recovery, flashed and got a picture of a phone with a Red Exclamation point on it. I then downloaded CWR 3.0.0.8 and flashed that, this time it goes into recovery but does the same thing the other one does: Shows the menu options but then the screen goes blank if I try to choose an option.
EDIT: Holy poop, I think I know what the issue was all along! Basically, I was thinking that recovery worked like my Thunderbolt in that the Vol +/- was how to scroll in CWR menus and the PWR button was the select. Turns out that you use the trackball to both scroll AND select menus in CWR on the DInc!
I just wiped the device in CWR and it is booting up. I already sold the phone to a friend and she told me to keep it Rooted with a stock ROM on it, so I don't have to go any further provided that it wipes properly!
Well as long as it works!

If it has clockworkmod than it should work like this
Using Clockwork Recovery console
Disconnect the USB cable and reboot the phone into HBOOT mode (power off, then hold volume down key and press-hold power on key).
HBOOT will scan for the ESPRIMG.zip file (and some others), then present you with 4 options: Fastboot, Recovery, Simlock and Clear Storage.
Press volume down key to select Recovery, and press power key to apply.
This will take you to a screen with a black background, a picture of a phone and a big red exclamation mark.
Press and hold the Volume Up key, then whilst still holding Volume Up, press the Power key. This will take you to a secret yellow menu with a few options (you may also get an error like E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command, it's ok to ignore this one).
Press Volume Down to scroll the list and highlight Apply sdcard:update.zip. Press the Power button to activate.
This will flash the update.zip file we copied to the root of the memory card, which activates a custom tool called the Clockwork Recovery. Clockwork lets us do many things, including making full phone backups, and installing unsigned ROM images. Clockwork gets wiped every time you reset the phone. So to use it, you must always reboot into HBOOT mode, choose Recovery, activate the hidden menu and apply the update.zip as above. You will be doing this multiple times, so get used to it.
If that doesn't work than you need to put http://dl.dropbox.com/u/642364/slideroot/update.zip that in your sd card
After you flash Clockwork Recovery for the first time, you should download Rom Manager, and in it will have an option that says "Reboot into Recovery", and once you select that, it will take you directly to Clockwork, so no more constant reflashing

Help, possible bricked A100

I was trying to go back to stock ICS and cwm recovery. When I tried to go back, I was currently rooted, running twrp recovery and a custome rom (carbon). I followed this procedure:
The simple method to revert back to stock ICS from a custom ROM on an A100.
+++Locked bootloader, no custom recovery, no root. Full stock .014 rom. It will recieve OTA updates to latest Acer version.+++
Get Ready
1) Download this flashable Stock recovery zip, and place in your normal flashing location, - Thx 4 help pio
http://db.tt/VLmnMCzq
Also uploaded below
2) Download the Official .014 Stock ICS rom
The stock ICS zip from zeronull. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1611696
Here is a second link to it. http://ubuntuone.com/7DZtbNqZzOk7qsaQxNk99a - thx zleto
3) Rename the Stock ICS rom to "update.zip", no quotes (make sure you have "hide known file extensions" UNCHECKED, in the folder options). And place it on the root of your microSD card. This will allow you to see the file extension to verify that it is named properly.
Get it Done
1) Flash the Stock recovery zip with your custom recovery. Then wipe cache, davlik cache, and wipe data/factory reset.
2) Reboot to system.
3) Allow it to sit for 5 minutes or so.
4) Then Power off.
5) Update from the microSD card by holding down the power and volume rocker closest to the corner at the same time, until you see "erasing cache .".. ect, ect. The stock rom install should start by itself, dont touch anything, wait for it to reboot.
****** If it won't boot do a factory reset (with the hardware buttons, see below) and/or try to reflash the ics rom one more time. ******
Quote:
To perform a Factory Data Reset use the following steps:
1.Place the rotation lock switch in the up position (tablet held in portrait). Or to the left if held in landscape.
2.Press and hold the Volume down button, which is located farthest from the corner (it is volume up, if held in landscape).
3.With the Volume down button held, press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds then release it. Continue holding the Volume down button.
4.Once the tablet vibrates, switch the rotation lock on and off repeatedly while still holding the Volume down button.
5.Release the Volume down button and stop switching the rotation lock once the "Erasing Userdata..." message appears in the upper left corner of the screen
Now I get the android symbol with the red triangle, that stays for about a minute, then it reboots and stays on thye acer screen. When I did the steps and was going to reboot, I received a waring while in recovery sayiny that I dont have a op installed. I did it anyway, as posted and now I'm stuck, can anyone PLEASE help me.I tried doing a reset with steps 2 though 4 but while pressing the vol up and letting go of the power button, it does not vibrate.
Ok, I redownloaded the stock ICS from here http://ubuntuone.com/7DZtbNqZzOk7qsaQxNk99a. At the end of the download, a window popped up saying this may be a malicious file. (Idownloaded it on my pc). I remember it also said the same thing when I downloaded it the first time too. I turned off the tablet, took the sd card out, put in pc and transferred the file, pulled out from pc, inserted in tablet and turned it on, still same thing with android synbol and red triangle. I tried to do a factory reset by following the steps above. I got it to say erasing userdata, then this is what it says in red, unrecoverable bootloader (ox19000008) I have no idea what this means?? Can anyone help me out with getting this back to stock ICS and recovery?? What do I do next?? Thanks
Now, when I do the same procedure but instead use the vol up button (instead of the down button), it comes up bootloader, then the version number, then starting fastboot usb protocol. I have no idea what this means??
