So it's Android 2.1? I'm surprised. You should be able to root it if you downgrade to 1.21.405.2. If it has an SLCD screen it'll be tough though as you'll lose the screen for a while.
edit: Not a good idea after all.

Yea its 2.1 and SLCD Screen. I didnt know if it was safe to try anything since it uses a different radio hardware.

It will brick you trust me, don't try a GSM RUU

The current radios might not support it then. You might be out of luck.
What is the radio version at the moment?

Flashing a GSM (EDIT: ) HBOOT and/or radio on a CDMA phone (and vice-versa) is a big no-no.
MAYBE you can use a 2.1 LCD Android on your phone, it might not brick it but I don't guarantee it'll work.

I'm positive the current radios do not support it, being cdma and all. Downgrading with the ruu you suggested sure will turn his screen black..... for good.
However, there may be other ways. We do have some CDMA RUU's

Be really nice to have a backup or something though. I can just see this making me a nice expensive paperweight hah
I am guessing using some incredible software probley wont work, but its prob a little closer then a gsm desire. lease the incredible is cdma.

I don't think you'll have any luck with an RUU that supports your hardware, as it's most likely going to have a lower software number and so won't flash. It looks like your release has fixed whatever exploit unrevoked3 uses, or it has a different model number and is being rejected because of that.

Anyone know of any other places that might be working on something for a cdma desire?
this is the only reason I dont like being with a smaller carrier. Awesome service, but no developers.

Well, we, European and Asian users don't have a Cdma Desire, so the only way is to wait an US user to unroot it.

Anyone know anywere i can do some reading on the rooting proccess? I have a pretty strong background but no android experience. If so i can start playing around to see if i can.figure something out.

You could try the Unrevoked method.
I would try these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7563237&postcount=1
P.S. I'm very interested in this as I will be getting my CDMA Desire in a couple of months so I'll help anyway I can!

Rooting HBOOT 0.83.0001 - is it possible?

I unrooted to send my phone back to HTC for a warranty repair. They've sent it back and now my HBOOT is 0.83.0001 - I'm pretty sure it wasn't before I sent it to them...
Is there a root method that works for this version of HBOOT?
If not, what other options do I have?
Lol ? Do you have the new ROM so ?
I wondered if it would, but no, still 2.1-update1
I'm gonna be disappointed if I can't root it for a while now, but if the Froyo OTA does happen this weekend it will be some consolation...
I will add also that at this time, there is no way to root the Desire with the HBOOT 0.83.0001 :/
i had a bad feeling that would be the case... oh well, at least I'm free of the iphone I was stuck using while they were repairing it... those things seriously suck
Does the unrevoked3 method not work? I thought that could root anything!
I couldn't find anything specific to HBOOT versions on http://unrevoked.com/recovery/, but I'm a little hesitant to try it without knowing for sure...
I did rooted two desires with hboot 0.82 (branded for polish provider (ERA) using unrevoked3 without gold card.
I would say, go for it and try, nothing to loose
thanks - I took the plunge with unrevoked3 and had no issues... worked fine now running LeeDroid, it's all good

Out of interest, OP, does your replacement phone have an SLCD panel? Or did they repair your actual unit?

Forgive me, why is this?
Dunno why people worry so much about bricking - they're all under warranty for a while yet, so just send it back.
Yes, I know in theory it voids it, but are they really going to turn up to court to try and prove it over a £500 phone? It'd cost em more just to have the meeting to arrange it.

It could be argued that it's that sort of dishonesty that makes HTC slightly apprehensive about third-party ROMs and mods, and why they make some attempt to prevent you doing it.
Hi.
I've same problem. My device was overheating and i unroot it and sent in for repair. Today i got it back with new mobo and HBOOT v. 0.83.0001 :S I hope that i can root this thing using unrevoked.

can you actually get it posted with instructsion, becuase unrevoked does the procedure (using linux version as running ubuntu) and it says it will leave the phone in recovery mode. all i get left with is a black screen. clockworks recovery is not to be seen. infact i think my recovery partition may not have been included as when ever i boot into it its a black screen.
there are a growing number of people who are stuck on 0.83 who would like to know.

[Q] Can I still go back to stock?

Is there an updated resource thread for returning the phone entirely to stock? I'm running Skyraider 3.5, incredikernel 2.6.32.27, 2.15.00.11.19 radio, and an updated HBOOT with CWM; all on a launch Inc; and would like to return to complete stock with the most recent updates.

I can answer this part of your question.
The ESN is the Electronic Serial Number that is tied to your phone. If one has a "bad" ESN, that means Verizon has flagged that phone as either stolen, or delinquent with billing or some other circumstance. Therefore, if someone was to buy it, Verizon would refuse to activate it. However, it is possible another carrier would activate it, if it were able to be flashed over.
A "clean" ESN means all is well, and that it is all gravy to be activated on the Verizon network.
Hope that helps.
You can go back to stock, just requires flashing the RUU file you can find at www.dougpiston.com
Clean ESN means that the phone can be re-activated on another account. As far as I know, your phones ESN should be fine unless its been reported stolen or your account isn't current. Should be able to Google ESN for more info.

The Japanese EVO unfortunately came with HBOOT 2.15.0001 which, until very recently, was unrootable. The Japanese EVO is under KDDI AU here in Japan, rather than Sprint USA. Other than that, I don't think there's really much difference.

Did you have any problems with the WiMax radio once you flashed the CM7 rom onto your phone? It did to mine
Does anyone else have any problems rooting with CDMA phones in Japan?
Yeah. Lost my.Wimax. looking to find a way to get back to AU stock.
There was a stock RUU for the Japanese Evo posted by xhausx on this forum I think. Some people got it to revert back to stock but others didn't.
With mine I had an old image of my rooted stock which I flashed and returned to AU and was able to get it replaced.
I couldn't seem to flash my wimax keys, but having looked around if you're using CWM to flash it won't do radios. Supposedly gotta use amon recovery.
Did you check if you had wimax prior to flashing a ROM?
If any is there could you answer me this if possible.
There seems to be WiMAX connectivity issues when flashing a custom ROM. Were there any problems prior to flashing ie. after turning s-off and rooting the phone? I'd like to try overclocking my phone, but I don't wanna lose my WiMAX access. Any advice would be great. Cheers.

B4 u flash anything, just make a backup of your wimax partition, NOT just the keys. Then if anything gets borked, you will be safe. Once the keys are gone, they are not recoverable except if you have a backup partition. Just Google search backing up the ENTIRE partition.

I rooted once before and backed up the WiMAX partition like you say. However I couldn't get a connection which seemed to be a common issue with those rooting the Japanese version of the evo, as most roms use sprints' base whereas here we have au which uses a different software version and whatnot. Did you manage to flash without any problems to your WiMAX here in Japan?

[Q] Stuck in limbo, need help!

I have posted several stuff about a situation I am having with my phone.... and I still cannot get it solved fully. I hope I can do it here.
I will try and summarize the situation with some key points.
First here is my current info....
Android Version 2.2.1
Baseband Version 2.15.00.03.04
Kernel Version [email protected]#2
Build Number 1.05.970.1 CL339957 release keys
Software number 1.05.970.1
PRI version 2.11_01c
PRL version 01001
Model Number PC36100
Supersonic DVT1 Ship S-ON
HBOOT-6.17.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_20aa
RADIO-2.15.00.03.04
Now I first rooted using revolutionary and got s-off properly.... I played with some roms and found it fun but not enough time to keep at it..... so I decided to s-on and go back to stock using un-revoked. That semi worked.... I got s-on.... but never lost the root. I still have recovery and everything still shows I have root except s-on.
Additionally, I tried to run the stock kddi ruu and i have gotten every error from 140, 170, 171 and even at one time 130...lol still no luck there. In doing all of that I figured out that the image version on my phone is 4.24.651.1 and I need to get to 1.05.970.1 (the stock kddi evo 4g) but cannot get it done.
Also I am HBOOT-6.17.0001 which is confusing in itself. xhausx helped me by giving me a nanadroid version of my kddi rom but that doesn't allow me to update anything and finding updates here is impossible unless I am running stock without root.
I am not sure if I need to flash a new misc partition, wipe my nand or something else and so not know how to do all of that..... can someone please please please help? I am willing to toss a small reward your way if we get me back to when I bought it.
I think you need to run the RUU for your phone; get it back to out of the box, stock, and just start over.

You have a Japanese Evo, right?
Since it's a different phone, most of the people here will not be able to help you. I could tell you what to do if you had a American Evo, but it would probably either error out or further your problem.
Is there a forum for your specific version? Do things generally work the same as our Evos... like can you use the same RUU that I would use?

Since it's a different phone, most of the people here will not be able to help you. I could tell you what to do if you had a American Evo, but it would probably either error out or further your problem.
Is there a forum for your specific version? Do things generally work the same as our Evos... like can you use the same RUU that I would use?

The fact that I have a Japanese evo doesn't mean that anyone will not be able to help me. This is actually the place where the developers made the first RUU for the Japanese evo to begin with. There are plenty of pro's here.... we just need to find the right solution for me. Additionally, most everything works the same.... I cannot use the same RUU as you because the cid will come up different and cause me more probs.

I have tried to run the root process again and it says in revolutionary that you already have s-off..... which in fact I do not.... and when I do the opposite process it just acts like its running the s-on and does nothing.
