[Q] CM6 Dialer - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I miss the ability to type someone's name and have it quickly find their number. CAn this be done in CyanogenMod 6?

I don't think so. Download Dialer One.

BB15, Thank you. That's perfect.
I love XDA

Such a useful feature.
What about the keyboard with quick auto-correct suggestions and long-press secondary characters that came stock on Sprint Hero?

Ya, me too
I've been using Dialer One since my Hero, love it

I dont think I could find a better community to learn a new os with.

Super Thanks!!!! I was wondering about this too. Thanks to the reply and thanks for asking the question.

You can always use the search button on the bottom right. Start typing the contacts name and the matching contacts pop up as you type

This thread has got me thinking. I like to avoid redundancy. For the second time in a week I have stopped using an app I've loved for 6 months. I'm going without Dialer One until further notice. Follow my tweets for updates on my Dialer One status.. kidding..
I knew in the back of my mind a search would include your phones content.. and I long press and voice dial frequently but I hadn't thought of tapping search and swyping a contacts name to call them. FYI, tap your contacts' icon not their info.

nvm, wrong thread, sorry

voice to text - "Sim free" -HTC say NO!

i email HTC to ask if the voice to text feature was disabled on the Sim Free version of the Desire and this is the response i got....
Thank you for your enquiry about voice to text.
Well the device does have voice to search via Google, so it should do. The only thing is you'll probably have to install some apps from market on the Device, hope this helps..

So any one with the desire ATM does the above work? (i.e voice to search) i find the answer vague so i have asked for a yes or no answer to the question i asked. i quoted the desirehtc website where it states this feature will be available.
if anyone else has emailed HTC on this subject i would be interested in the response you got.
UPDATE
HTC have now resopnded with a Simple "NO" you will have to use a 3d party App.
no voice search here.
cos it's using the HTC IME, it is missing the microphone key that you get on the Android keyboard to use the voice to text functions.
whoever answered that at HTC obviously didn't have one to hand to check and was probably looking at the nexus....
Afternoon all,
After enabling the 'Voice to Text' as shown on How To Enable Voice To Text using one of the links on page 2 I have now got Google search by voice working on a T-Mobile Desire.
You don't have to change over to using the android keyboard if you don't want to use the main voice to text functionality, but now pressing and holding the search button brings up a pop-up on screen with 'Speak Now - Google Search' and a microphone symbol.
Seems to work fine to me.
works fine for me too.
Maybe it's coming in another update, this is from the htc website desirehtc dot com
" Android 2.1...
What's that all about then?
Launched in January 2010, and known in the trade as Eclair, this is basically an update to the operating system. In laymans terms, it's a sexier looking interface. But it's not quite that simple.
Now, for example, your Wallpapers can be animated, injecting your screen with a new lease of life. This works particularly well with the AMOLED screen.
Rather excitingly, it brings us into a realm where voice-to-text is a reality in all text fields. Imagine sending texts or emails simply by talking to your phone. Now do it, we're there. "
I'm sorry but voice search has always been there...

Here it is, tried and tested.
1. goto settings
2. goto text to speech and install voice data
3. goto http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UQC37DJC on your desire
5. download it
6. install it (you may get a prompt saying that you need to change your settings to allow it to install, so do so)
7. next in settings again goto language & keyboard
8. tick android keyboard
9. click android keyboard settings
10. make sure voice input is ticked.
11. go into messages and hold down on TAP TO COMPOSE

Cheers mate... great help, 1 more reason 2 love Desire...
Back to my orignal post.....
HTC tell me the voice - search is available by default (i.e not installing any other SW) they say it has to be enabled in settings then it work when using the search key/menu?
any one confirm this?
Actually, I also got a similar answer from HTC. I'm from Singapore though. Thus, most likely it is an unlocked version. My question was:
"Does the HTC Desire support the speech-to-text function out of the box? Does it also support AVI files? Thank You."
This is what i got.
"Thanks for contacting HTC.
For HTC Desire, it does have the function for Speech-to-text, but it doesn't support AVI file.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
We look forward to be of service to you again."
From this reply, it seems obvious what the answer is. But the truth, from those who already got the phone, are far from it. I had specifically said out of the box. But, as told by owners, you need to download apps and everything for this function. Just FYI, I do not own the Desire...yet XD
HTC says NO! to voice enabled in default.

Manually launch HTC Keyboard?

Is there a way to manually launch the keyboard?
The reason I ask is I my partner visits one of her forums on Phone and when it comes to adding posts (using a system not to disimilar to these boards) she can't get the keyboard to appear?
Any suggestions?
If anyone needs to know the forums are on babycentre.co.uk
Press and hold menu I think.
What do you mean by "manual launch"? When you click in the textarea or input field it shows up - is that not manual?

One solution could be to manually relaunch your partner, but that is probably a more cumbersome and less satisfying method.

Swype: Can't highlight words with double tap?

You guys notice that you can't double tap the word to highlight with the stock version of Swype included with the SGSII? Not sure why this is no longer available, really helped speed things up with editing on the SGS versions of Swype.
Yes I noticed that, makes it annoying to fix typos...
it's to do with the samsung "correction" system.
It is possible to edit words via swype, but its a bit clunky, you long press the word, click select word, and then wait 2 seconds for the samsung crap to get out of the way.
I'm sure that the correction thing can be disabled letting us use swype more intuitively.
Apparently you can just uninstall the swype that comes on the phone and install the latest beta from the swype website and get that feature back.

I think I might just do that, definitely makes it a lot more difficult to go back and edit!
EDIT: NOPE, that didn't work. Don't bother, it's something with the OS.
I think this is actually a gingerbread thing.
Froyo used to do it fine but when I upgraded my
Old phone to gingerbread I could no longer do it.
The text selection is different.
You can click on the word you want to change then
Press the swype button once to get up the word list.
Hope this helps.
Also, once you have the word list up, you can press the 'Shift' key to get a list of capitalisation options for the word, e.g. word, Word, WORD.
Swype is the main reason I'm on an Android phone. I like the SGS2, of course, but having played with dual boot WP7 and Android on an HD2, Swype was the main reason for going Android. No regrets, mind you
I would LOVEEEE to fix this.., someone freaking sticky this.. I tried installing my swype from sgs1 froyo but no good.. I also hate how , comma is where space bar used to be.. always hit it instead of space

Maybe If I can change the name,.sign then instal it along side
Our built in version. I do prefer the beta too. Too many buttons
At the bottom on this version, but as I said, it might be gingerbreads
New way of text selection causing the problem cos it happened on
My old phone. Very annoying.
Edit : I wouldn't be able to post it here tho as its against the rules.
If you want to edit the word, just single tap the word and tap the swype icon on the bottom left of the keyboard which brings up all your options.

We have a winner. Don't double tap, long press, or highlight the word. as long as the cursor is next to the word, the swype button will show the suggested words list.

Thanks for solving that for me zxz88!
Now, how do I ad words to it?
press anywhere on the word you want to correct to get the cursor there, then just press the swype key in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.....does the trick without having to select the whole word again....i had the same problem you did, then realized there must be another way....
actually.. that isn't too bad, I still don't like how much of the spacebar was cut to add 2 new keys tho.. I ALWAYS hit ,,,,,, for space

Yes, but Swype previously you could just double tap to bring up the word choice, one less step = faster.
BTW, this looks to be a Gingerbread bug, not Swype's... and is documented on Swype's forum: http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?2928-Gingerbread-2.3.3-Double-Tap-opening-Edit-Menu.
On a side note... can one of you nice people post up the "libswypecore.so" file from XWKE2's /system/lib directory? It got deleted when I installed the beta version, I think the stock version runs faster.
Thanks!

Surely a double tap and 2 separate taps are the same number of steps? I find the new way more intuitive in day to day use.
In fact if you are correcting the word you have just typed, you don't have to double tap at all anymore. One less step = faster right?

No problem, to add words I believe you just type out the new word instead of swyping it gets added as a new word so the next time you can swype it!

Wrong, it's all about WHERE you're tapping. If I quickly double tap on the word, my finger doesn't move from that spot and I can immediately pick the replacement word. If I have to put the cursor on the word, then move down to the keyboard all the way to the lower left to hit the option button, and then move back up to select word, of course that's slower.
Pretty straightforward really... how could you say the two are the same? It's like saying you're both driving from points A to B, who cares about distance, lol.

[Q] Does the Galaxy Nexus have Smart Dialling?

Hi
Does the galaxy havesmart dialing?
It is one of the things i loved about my Sensation. i could start typing a few letters (numbers) and all the coressponding contacts were shown.
from what i can see from all the videos this may not be possible in stock android 4.0?
Can anyone relay my fears
Cant remeber the last i didnt have that feature even going back to my nokia e71.
I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.
the X10i Sony doesn't have it and i'm worried the nexus doesn't
i use it a lot when using the htc dialer
No idea how to load my google contacts into emulator... if there's an easy way to do that I can try for you.
i have tried it in the emulator.
it will not work under the dialer itself.
however it will work under the search bar.
when you start to type the number under the search, it will appear all the related contacts.
You can always use a 3rd party app such as Dialer One or TouchPal Dialer (free on the market) which has the feature you desire.
Mark.

Android SDK
Takes about 10-15 mins to get up and running purely dependent on connection of course. But emulator takes few mins to boot and is really sluggish. Still no clue how anyone develops on that.
I made myself as a contact..dialer did not show what you asked. But unless I get full contact list in there cant say for sure. But the layout itself doesnt seem appropriate for it.
This is one of my concerns aswell, I love the smart dial feature on the HTC dialer and heavily rely on it. I don't want to have to get an alternate dialer I want a nice clean pure android experience.
It's crazy to me that people still look up names by numbers instead of names.

you can use the search bar to search for numbers. it will appear with the contact that match the numbers.
just like it has already happening in honeycomb table. just that no ones use honeycomb to make phone calls.
It's a change it might not.

Smart Dialling appears so backwards to me. I have internalized only a few phone numbers and that's because it'S always easier and faster to just use the contacts feature instead of "dialling".

It only works from the start of a phone number though.
So if you know the number ends in 5423, if you try searching for that it won't match it.
HTC's dialer will match anywhere in the number.
Balls, much faster to start typing a name on the keypad and results are refined as you go. Every phone for the last 15 years had t9 dialling. So stupid Apple dropped it and Google following along.

Swype Beta 1.4 Update

Swype Beta was just updated to 1.4. Update details per Android Central, "added Living Language, which takes auto correction and word prediction to a new level with crowd sourced data". Other additions include, "The correction engine has gotten an upgrade, and the new Smart Editor now analyzes your entire sentence, flagging any errors for correction or suggesting the best substitution based on the context of what you're saying, not just the word order."
Please share your thoughts on this version. Download is here: http://beta.swype.com/
That video was hilarious

Thanks Dave, I've always been a huge Swype fan, wouldn't buy a phone unless it was capable of using Swype. This version is pretty nice. Still playing with it. One thing I noticed is, it's not quite as easy to use punctuation as before (like anyone uses punctuation in texts anyway). I used to be able to tap on the last word I wrote and it would give me the option of ! , ? or whatever, now you have to long press the appropriate letter. Not a biggie just something I noticed. Still playing, but thanks for the heads up! :good:
I'm liking the built in themes!
Thanks for the info. Just updated. Hopefully the update will address the problem with personal dictionary disappearing followed by no longer able to add new words.

I've been messing with it for about an hour or so. The smart editor and next word prediction must take time to populate. As for the personal dictionary disappearing, I don't get why they have a register option, but no log in and sync dictionary option  As for adding words, I have had no issues there. One last thing I noticed is that Dragon seems a little more accurate. May be my imagination

There is login and the supposedly sync dictionary option. Under Swype connect, just tap into your registered email/account. Although I'm not sure how it works; I don't see any syncing between my two devices using the same account.
If this is your first time using Swype, then the dictionary disappearing issue I was referring to usually happens in a few days. Whatever triggered it I'm still unclear; I've tried with or without an account, checked and unchecked syncing option, and many other combinations... and it's usually after that disappearance the word addition ceases to work.

Lol! I just find Google voice typing works so well. Also I regularly hit the Dragon button by error due to its proximity to the enter button.
On another note, after a day of use, I have definitely noticed an improvement in word selection while swyping.

I am always open minded to better options & different ideas, but if you are going to post a statement like this, please explain how you have arrived at this conclusion.
I don't think anyone can debate the fact that Swiftkey has the best prediction machine out there for regular typing. I actually use Swiftkey on my tablet, and when drafting long emails on my phone in landscape. Given this I was very excited to try Swiftkey Flow, which I did, for both versions. In my experience, Swiftkey still has a long way to go to catch Swype when it comes to swype typing. Swiftkey Flow is not as accurate or smooth as Swype when swyping. My typing speeds on Swype are 25% faster than when using Swiftkey Flow. This is not surprising given Swype has been doing this since it was founded almost 10 years ago in 2003.

OK..I like the fact it auto spaces after punctuation. I can tell it to learn how I type from SMS, FB, or Twit. It goes out and does it's thing and says it learned. I can now to "Swiping" words in shorthand that I used in GOsms. Genius. I can swipe left quick quick quick and it will start to remove text I may want to remove. The keyboard has a fresh look with various themes. All Swype boards look the same to me. I bid you to try the latest version of flow. ...61. It's much improved

If you like to swype, you can do a period-to-space swype (same for question, exclamation mark, comma, colon, and double-quote). You can also double-tap space to get period-space now. I'm not sure when that was added though.
I love the punct gestures; long press is too slow.
When you stop on a letter and wait for the menu to pop up with the available choices, it would be nice to see the uppercase version of the letter there as well.
Otherwise I have been using Swype since this summer when I got my SG3 and love it.

Swype also auto spaces after punctuation. I have tried both versions of Swiftkey flow. There is no brand loyalty here, I just want the best solution for me.
At the end of the day, this decision is personal and very much driven by what one is accustomed to. Let's bury the comparison discussion for now, the purpose of this thread is for discussion around the new Swype release.
Or just swype from the question mark or exclamation point to the space bar and it will input whatever special character your swyped from..... It's the easiest way.
