Swype: Can't highlight words with double tap? - Galaxy S II Themes and Apps

You guys notice that you can't double tap the word to highlight with the stock version of Swype included with the SGSII? Not sure why this is no longer available, really helped speed things up with editing on the SGS versions of Swype.

Yes I noticed that, makes it annoying to fix typos...

it's to do with the samsung "correction" system.
It is possible to edit words via swype, but its a bit clunky, you long press the word, click select word, and then wait 2 seconds for the samsung crap to get out of the way.
I'm sure that the correction thing can be disabled letting us use swype more intuitively.

Apparently you can just uninstall the swype that comes on the phone and install the latest beta from the swype website and get that feature back.

I think I might just do that, definitely makes it a lot more difficult to go back and edit!
EDIT: NOPE, that didn't work. Don't bother, it's something with the OS.

I think this is actually a gingerbread thing.
Froyo used to do it fine but when I upgraded my
Old phone to gingerbread I could no longer do it.
The text selection is different.
You can click on the word you want to change then
Press the swype button once to get up the word list.
Hope this helps.

Also, once you have the word list up, you can press the 'Shift' key to get a list of capitalisation options for the word, e.g. word, Word, WORD.
Swype is the main reason I'm on an Android phone. I like the SGS2, of course, but having played with dual boot WP7 and Android on an HD2, Swype was the main reason for going Android. No regrets, mind you

I would LOVEEEE to fix this.., someone freaking sticky this.. I tried installing my swype from sgs1 froyo but no good.. I also hate how , comma is where space bar used to be.. always hit it instead of space

Hmm well I have apks for the beta, my own custom version,
Maybe If I can change the name,.sign then instal it along side
Our built in version. I do prefer the beta too. Too many buttons
At the bottom on this version, but as I said, it might be gingerbreads
New way of text selection causing the problem cos it happened on
My old phone. Very annoying.
Edit : I wouldn't be able to post it here tho as its against the rules.

If you want to edit the word, just single tap the word and tap the swype icon on the bottom left of the keyboard which brings up all your options.

We have a winner. Don't double tap, long press, or highlight the word. as long as the cursor is next to the word, the swype button will show the suggested words list.
Burko

Thanks for solving that for me zxz88!
Now, how do I ad words to it?

press anywhere on the word you want to correct to get the cursor there, then just press the swype key in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.....does the trick without having to select the whole word again....i had the same problem you did, then realized there must be another way....

actually.. that isn't too bad, I still don't like how much of the spacebar was cut to add 2 new keys tho.. I ALWAYS hit ,,,,,, for space

Yes, but Swype previously you could just double tap to bring up the word choice, one less step = faster.
BTW, this looks to be a Gingerbread bug, not Swype's... and is documented on Swype's forum: http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?2928-Gingerbread-2.3.3-Double-Tap-opening-Edit-Menu.
On a side note... can one of you nice people post up the "libswypecore.so" file from XWKE2's /system/lib directory? It got deleted when I installed the beta version, I think the stock version runs faster.
Thanks!

Surely a double tap and 2 separate taps are the same number of steps? I find the new way more intuitive in day to day use.
In fact if you are correcting the word you have just typed, you don't have to double tap at all anymore. One less step = faster right?

No problem, to add words I believe you just type out the new word instead of swyping it gets added as a new word so the next time you can swype it!

Wrong, it's all about WHERE you're tapping. If I quickly double tap on the word, my finger doesn't move from that spot and I can immediately pick the replacement word. If I have to put the cursor on the word, then move down to the keyboard all the way to the lower left to hit the option button, and then move back up to select word, of course that's slower.
Pretty straightforward really... how could you say the two are the same? It's like saying you're both driving from points A to B, who cares about distance, lol.

This thread has got me thinking. I like to avoid redundancy. For the second time in a week I have stopped using an app I've loved for 6 months. I'm going without Dialer One until further notice. Follow my tweets for updates on my Dialer One status.. kidding..
I knew in the back of my mind a search would include your phones content.. and I long press and voice dial frequently but I hadn't thought of tapping search and swyping a contacts name to call them. FYI, tap your contacts' icon not their info.

It has been brought to my attention that posting the apk itself is against site rules so I have removed the link. I have however left the official website link for anyone that wants the app just visit the site and download the apk. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Anyway, Swype was never very supportive for people that used more than one language. Even the version where you press a single button to switch languages, sometimes it doesn't change at all, and when it does, it's always less snapier than any other keyboard I have tried.
Using stock prediction more worse than swype.

Swype is still phenomenally better. The typing gets more accurate with use, and it is always much more accurate and has better punctuation. It takes one tap to add a word to the dictionary. I add a word to the Google dictionary and it still doesn't show up. It randomly censors out words and autocorrects to words that don't even exist. It's a bloody mess.
Have you even tried to write the word "sex"? It keeps on changing it to "sec" and won't even allow me to add it to the dictionary.
Google should have just bought Swype and incorporated it...
I wonder if it's possible to disable it from automatically creating a space after each word, there are times when I want to disable it.

i found the new native keyboard a great improvement, but for me and my uses, doesn't get close to swype. one thing i miss in the native keyboard is cut/copy/paste/select all with just a swype, the ability to move de cursor by swiping too, it has tab (->), a big numerical only keyboard mode, &c.
Of course it's a matter of personal preferences, but swype has more useful features, that i find myself using everyday, than the new native keyboard. And I did delay my coming back to swype trying to get used to the new keyboard. But eventually, after a few days, I'm back with swype.
all the best
You can also tap and hold a word to get the options too.
Of course, predicting words could be better and punctuation marks on swype are more natural to enter.

Swype Beta 1.4 Update

Swype Beta was just updated to 1.4. Update details per Android Central, "added Living Language, which takes auto correction and word prediction to a new level with crowd sourced data". Other additions include, "The correction engine has gotten an upgrade, and the new Smart Editor now analyzes your entire sentence, flagging any errors for correction or suggesting the best substitution based on the context of what you're saying, not just the word order."
Please share your thoughts on this version. Download is here: http://beta.swype.com/
That video was hilarious

Thanks Dave, I've always been a huge Swype fan, wouldn't buy a phone unless it was capable of using Swype. This version is pretty nice. Still playing with it. One thing I noticed is, it's not quite as easy to use punctuation as before (like anyone uses punctuation in texts anyway). I used to be able to tap on the last word I wrote and it would give me the option of ! , ? or whatever, now you have to long press the appropriate letter. Not a biggie just something I noticed. Still playing, but thanks for the heads up! :good:

I've been messing with it for about an hour or so. The smart editor and next word prediction must take time to populate. As for the personal dictionary disappearing, I don't get why they have a register option, but no log in and sync dictionary option  As for adding words, I have had no issues there. One last thing I noticed is that Dragon seems a little more accurate. May be my imagination

There is login and the supposedly sync dictionary option. Under Swype connect, just tap into your registered email/account. Although I'm not sure how it works; I don't see any syncing between my two devices using the same account.
If this is your first time using Swype, then the dictionary disappearing issue I was referring to usually happens in a few days. Whatever triggered it I'm still unclear; I've tried with or without an account, checked and unchecked syncing option, and many other combinations... and it's usually after that disappearance the word addition ceases to work.

I am always open minded to better options & different ideas, but if you are going to post a statement like this, please explain how you have arrived at this conclusion.
I don't think anyone can debate the fact that Swiftkey has the best prediction machine out there for regular typing. I actually use Swiftkey on my tablet, and when drafting long emails on my phone in landscape. Given this I was very excited to try Swiftkey Flow, which I did, for both versions. In my experience, Swiftkey still has a long way to go to catch Swype when it comes to swype typing. Swiftkey Flow is not as accurate or smooth as Swype when swyping. My typing speeds on Swype are 25% faster than when using Swiftkey Flow. This is not surprising given Swype has been doing this since it was founded almost 10 years ago in 2003.

OK..I like the fact it auto spaces after punctuation. I can tell it to learn how I type from SMS, FB, or Twit. It goes out and does it's thing and says it learned. I can now to "Swiping" words in shorthand that I used in GOsms. Genius. I can swipe left quick quick quick and it will start to remove text I may want to remove. The keyboard has a fresh look with various themes. All Swype boards look the same to me. I bid you to try the latest version of flow. ...61. It's much improved

If you like to swype, you can do a period-to-space swype (same for question, exclamation mark, comma, colon, and double-quote). You can also double-tap space to get period-space now. I'm not sure when that was added though.
I love the punct gestures; long press is too slow.
When you stop on a letter and wait for the menu to pop up with the available choices, it would be nice to see the uppercase version of the letter there as well.
Otherwise I have been using Swype since this summer when I got my SG3 and love it.

Swype also auto spaces after punctuation. I have tried both versions of Swiftkey flow. There is no brand loyalty here, I just want the best solution for me.
At the end of the day, this decision is personal and very much driven by what one is accustomed to. Let's bury the comparison discussion for now, the purpose of this thread is for discussion around the new Swype release.
Or just swype from the question mark or exclamation point to the space bar and it will input whatever special character your swyped from..... It's the easiest way.

Oh it is a good trace function what I'm interested in, in another phone that I have with AOSP keyboard it works flawless, that's what I was interesting in AOSP for G7 but I haven't been able to activate the trace in G7 neither with these options nor even with Google Keyboard. I've also tried AnySoftKeyboard that has the trace function but it's almost useless in practice. So I think I will keep using LG Keyboard, even with all its flaws it turns out it has the best trace function I've found so far (of course that does not mean it's good).

- When the word selected by the trace is not the expected, pressing delete does not immediately delete it as it does the LG keyboard, you have to delete it letter by letter
- When you type letter by letter a word that you want but it is not recognized and the keyboard replaces it by a "valid" word, if you press delete in the LG keyboard, the word that you typed is restored and you can keep writting with your word not modified. In Xperia keyboard you need to delete letter by letter the "valid" word and rewrite your word again and if it is a long word, it is replaced again and your only choice is to add it to your personal dictionary - even if you only want to use in this context and do not want it to be offered as a valid word in general
- And related to this, if you type a not recognized word and then push it to keep it in the text as it is, LG keyboard gives you the choice to add it to your personal dictionary or not, but Xperia always add it to your dictionary
But even with this, yes I prefer it

1. Yes that's true
2. After you typed a nonvalid word just press delete 1 time (to go back to the word) and then you can choose the before written nonvalid word from the upper left of the keyboard.
3. True again
