so what can or will we be able to do with temp root?! - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok guys im still rocking the g1. i have been ready for an upgrade for quite some time but havent seen a phone ive really liked. i have monster hands and would love a keyboard which is the only reason i dont have an n1 but with the difficulties there having rooting the g2 i might reconsider.
first off im not extremely tech savy. i have a+ but anyone who knows what it is knows its not that advanced, but i can atleast understand and follow instructions. so with this great forum and people who make things easy like cyan im not worried if things on the g2 might be a litle more complicated.
my question is IF they for some reason cant get permanent root or it takes a while to do so, what can't we do other than custom roms with the temp root we have now?
can or will we be able to have tether and cpu clock adjustment? i know i can change kernals and run higher oc on my g1 will things like that be possible on g2? can we delete the crapware?
hopefully this will help out some others wondering the same thing. like i said im no programmer but can follow instructions and even mess with linux in my spare time so things like formatting sd cards with ext etc. is not a big deal i just want to make sure if i get this phone im not going to hate life lol any help or info is greatly appreciated and please add as much things we can and cant do as you can think of so everyone can get an idea... hopefully it wont be a problem but im ready for one NOW and hoping you guys can ease my mind

great thanks man. what about oc? im well aware at 800mhz it outperforms most of the 1gz phones out there and will be great on the battery, but it would be nice to see what the new cpu can do with the smaller 45nm design...

Noob Question

Idk if this is the right section, but my question is, I have the t-mobile tp2 and I was wondering if all the tweaks and other things on this site will work with my version of it. Also how to get cracked programs and games? I know on the Iphone you jailbrake it also how do I get the clock like everyone else has and the backgrounds?

Dude,
In answer to your question, yes the tweaks will work with your phone. What you need to do it spend some serious time reading. There is a lot on this site and it should take you a while just reading before you ever actually do anything. Unfortunately for you, most people will not tell you how to do it, you need to read up on it for yourself so that you learn how it is done. There is a seriously big difference between someone just showing you how to do it and you researching it on your own. To be honest, that is the best way to do it since you will also learn a lot more about what can be done just through reading the threads. Good luck, and happy reading.
Speed...
I've already read about 40 pages of things to do with the phone, if I was some hardcore enthusiast then yeah I would go that route, but unlike others I just want my phone to look nice and perform well and have stuff others dont have.
Welcome to forums,
Then just read this one:

Good luck and enjoy!

-->Why<-- ROOT Mytouch Slide???????

Why root mytouch slide??
I understand why you would want to root a G1, which i had and rooted for many different reasons.
but what can you do with mytouch slide?
Tether? that's it.. I mean, there is no point in apps2sd since froyo is coming.
So maybe if anyone gives me a good reason/enlightens me, i will root mytouch slide.
If you can't think of a reason, then you correct, you don't need root.

I agree with Falken, if you don't know well why bother..
When cm 6 is ready, that its the only reason you will need

Why do alot of ppl here seem to have an attitude, like "if you dont know, I'm not gonna help you"?, I've been on internet forums forever and this place seems to be worse in that regard, maybe just in my travels it seems that way, but maybe theres reasons he'd like to use his phone for that he didnt even think of that root would enable..
but root does seem kinda useless unless you plan on changing roms and having complete control of your phone.
IMO there isn't really many reasons. All Froyo roms i've flashed arent worth changing from stock just YET. I just rooted it so I can say I rooted it tbh xD.
IF SetCPU, Apps2sd, and screenshot are that important to you, I guess theres a reason :-/
Yeah, A2SD and screenshots are the only real reasons for me. Otherwise, I just like to tinker, and trying new roms is fun.
FWIW, I hadn't found a Froyo rom that I liked until TeamFenix's latest release. It has just about everything working.
EDIT: Oh, and regarding people just saying "if you don't know, you don't need it"... I think it's actually kind of a protective thing. Unless you have a reason to root, you're really just taking a risk with your phone that you don't need to.
Rooting your phone gives you the ability to customize your phone the way you want it.
A2sd is a good thing to have if you like to keep alot of apps and wireless teather is cool too especialy if you dont have internet for your pc or what not. But neither of those 2 reasons was why I rooted.
Unfortunatly we dont have full root for the slide yet so some of the apps that are made for rooted phones are NOT fully functional. Such as setCPU (we dont have the ability to make system changes unless in recovery). That does make it a little harder to do some customization.
IMHO....if you are interested in learning about android and making your phone look and act like you want it to, then root it and get to reading the forums to help get some ideas on how to make it your own.
If your not into learning and are the type of person that would make useless posts in the forum asking questions that can be figured out easily from reading, then please DO NOT ROOT YOUR PHONE. There are allready plenty of those types of people in the forums.
Oh and BTW.....you can always root it and if you dont like it then just unroot it and put it back to stock or leave it rooted but run a stock rom.
Check out my Avatar and that will give you a idea of some small changes that can be made ( custom slider, notification bar icons, font ) and those are just a few of the changes I have made.

For now, its going to be for small tweaks.
I use it for things like Cachemate and SetCPU, as well as having a Froyo rom, the added security features are a welcome addition for me.
There isnt a huge "everyone must have root because of X" reason yet, mainly due to the limited root abilities we have currently due to the nand situation. Eventually you will find it more of a "must have" thing, as overclocked kernels and the rest make it into the MTS ecosystem, but for now Id have to agree with everyone else, if you cannot think of a reason why you would need to root, then there is no point in rooting. Most everyone who is rooting currently is doing so for very specific reasons.

Technically???? Dont talk to me about technically. Because technically someone that can work the android kitchen is not a dev!!! Stop trying to up your post count on a account you just opened a month ago. Your post had absolutly nothing to do with the OP question therefore it is as useless as your other 800 posts.

I'm loving the CM6 Kanged rom, I've only used it a day, but I'd say its better than the stock rom...still too early to really tell though...
I rooted mine for the opportunities that lie ahead. Right now there is nothing I am wild about. Maybe when froyo or something else does I will be ready. I am running out of memory tho.
once your rooted you can start to play around, i came from the cliq where i made roms, themes etc... and i started already just get used to the layout of everything and how it works and by the time u no it ull be posting stuff
I don't know why so many of you are saying "if you don't know what root is don't root" or similar phrases.. if you would have read my 1st post, you know I rooted my G1.. -_-
I mean, I would download it for apps2sd, but froyo is coming with move to sd..
CM tether is pretty good too..
I guess I will browse around and think wether to root it or not.. thank u for all replies anyways

I've found many of the people on these forums to be quite helpful, while there is a small miniority who enjoy being elitist jerks. "Oh, my time is too valueable to help out a noob (although I have plenty of time to make snarky replies to their posts!)"... A-holes...
Anyway, the reason I chose to root, aside from CM6, is the ability to Over/Under-clock the device. I am a tweaker at heart, and while it may not make the most practical sense to ramp up the speed... Ima do it anyway
if you are a tweaker then you can root, if you don't tether and are afraid of breaking the phone then don't root. i have always said to anyone who asked me that if you can't think of 3 good reasons to root your phone then you don't really need to. i rooted my G1 and my slide, but not the mytouch and all my phones are just fine the way they are. since i cannot seem to root the mytouch(goldacard wont work) i kept it stock and handed it off to my girl who doesn't need that stuff. personally i have to have root because i have to tether my phone and CM tether was absolutely the shiz on the g1, never had any issues with drivers or anything not working, also i have hacked every winmo phone i ever had so it's kinda a habit to hack my phones right out of the box to unlock the true potential, yeah right now we can't write to the NAND but one day we will be able to and i'm waiting for that

Same here. It's the geek in me wanting to have a bragging right.

some issues after root

some background. My wife and I both bought Slides. Shortly after getting them she had someone she works with root hers. Everything worked great, I liked the way it ran and the lack of bloat ware so I had him root mine. Well after rooting mine I noticed that swype doesnt work anymore and flash(Website Flash) doesnt work anymore either. Now he doesn't want to help or return our messages and I am lost as to what to do.
I am not sure much about how he rooted it or what he did. I do know I get a cynogen screen when i turn on the phone and the rom is up to date.
Do you know what rom he installed?

This is exactly the reason that you shouldn't have someone root your phone unless you know what you're doing to do it yourself.
Best thing for you to do is to flash the 1.35.531 OTA update, which will remove root from your device and return you to the latest stock mytouch slide firmware. But honestly if you don't know anything about rooting or its benefits, OR ITS RISKS, then you shouldn't have anyone do it for you cus it makes you and your device a liability to this community. Everytime you have the slightest problem you're gonna be back here at the forum looking for someone to hold your hand cus you have no clue what you're messing with.
So I recommend you unroot your device until such time when you are able to fully understand the risks and capabilities of root. Go back to stock, then spend a lot of time here learning about root and what you might be able to use it for. For starters, ROOT IS NOT INTENDED FOR END USERS. If it was, EVERY phone would already be rooted when you get it. But its not. Its intended for ADVANCED users as a sort of "service entrance" to your device. This allows tech support guys (and gals) to do things that you shouldn't HAVE to worry about as an END USER; or, (my definition) a person, owning and using a device, with MINIMAL knowledge of the inner workings of said device. Its just like with windows....ANY IDIOT can get on windows and check their email. It requires almost NO knowledge to operate. Just the same, these phones are made so that any idiot can operate them with a bit of practice, but the critical parts of the system, where an IDIOT could really wreak some havoc, is(are) sealed off to most end users, to make sure they don't mess **** up. ROOT unseals all that so that you CAN really mess stuff up. And that's what will happen if you mess with stuff without a clue what you're doing.
Its in YOUR best interest to go back to stock. For now, anyway. Don't just accept your current level of know-how...LEARN HOW. When I got my G1 when they first came out, I knew NOTHING about programming or any kind of code, or any of that. But I have spent A LOT of time learning it all, and I'm still learning stuff all the time, and now I create my own themes, I patch code to make things work the way I want it to work, I fix all my own screw-ups without asking for help, and I'm damn proud of it. And you will be too, when you root your device all by yourself and don't NEED some non-replying jerkoff to do it for you...please take my advice, you'll be glad you did. Play it safe until you know what's safe and what isn't.

This doesn't help in anyway!!
I am not looking for someone to hold my hand. I am wanting to learn how to fix what someone screwed up. I am pretty sure during all the time you spent learning all the things you know with root you asked a question or two.
Back to the topic at hand. Is this something that can be fixed? Like I said I am not 100% sure what rom I have, pretty sure it is cynogen though.
The reason I want it rooted is because the stock slide sucks, I don't like all the crap that came preloaded. I like how the phone is rooted, I just don't like the things that are not working.
I'm pretty sure you'll learn the how's afterwards since you're going to be reading and absorbing info from this forum
But for now... fixing the issues at hand.
The problem on adobe flash is actually something not exactly fixable... the flash 10 is just not for our device (correct me if I'm wrong x_x) and so the current cm6 is just unable to use flash... =/
As for swype... I actually asked the same question when I flashed cm6 rom. The thread is in the Q&A subforum titled [Q]Swype on CM6? or something like that. There will be links to dl swype. Have fun =)
Hope this helps lol.

Well the problems you describe are bugs with the rom you are using and they will be the same for MOST roms since they're all based off cyanogens work. You SAY you wanna learn how to fix what someone screwed up but nobody screwed anything up, you just don't know what you're doing. If you want to fix problems that are specific to a certain rom, you need to look in your "about phone" section in settings and figure out what rom you are running.
THEN, go to the thread of the rom you are running. DON'T POST a question about swype or flash or keyboard lights there...the questions have already been asked and if there is a fix for your issue it will already be posted there somewhere.
And for your information, I used to ask questions all the time, that's PART of how ppl learn...but I NEVER in my time with android, have let anyone DO SOMETHING FOR ME. And that's all you seem to want, somone to root your phone for you, someone to tell you the answer so you don't have to waste time reading or searching for the answer...you don't even know what rom you're on, am I supposed to tell you THAT, too? You've displayed no desire to help yourself and the only ppl that get help around here are ppl that are willing to help themselves.
Its NO ONE'S job to man these fora to help ppl...anyone that helps anyone do anything here, they do it out of either the kindness of their own heart, or sheer boredom. Either way no one is OBLIGATED to help you, especially when the fixes for the bugs you describe have already been posted, and instead of searching for the answers you start a new thread, asking an old question, in the WRONG SECTION. There is a section marked Q&A which is SPECIFICALLY for asking and answering questions.
And if you hadn't noticed, I'm about the only person even paying any attention to your plight so don't be too quick to shun my advice. I will help you learn how to do things, ill help you figure things out if you get stuck, but I'm not gonna give you the answers or do it for you.
Go find out what rom you're running. Then look up the rom and search the thread for the bugs you're experiencing. If there are fixes for the bugs they'll be there.

If you didn't want anyone to hold you hand. why post asking for help? BMFC's post is actually what you should do. Also your phone isn't just rooted, its running a custom software. and as with any custom software its should be obvious that stuff you had from stock just isnt going to be there. (flash lite and stock swype.) Also THIS POST IS IN THE WRONG SECTION. IF YOU HAD READ THE STICKIES which I know for a fact that you didn't you might have learned a thing or two. seriously. is it that hard to read the stickies? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701241

Your problem isn't really a problem at all. you are running cyan0gen mod 6. That being said since it is a 3rd party android build due to copyright laws, cyan0gen cant add a lot of the things you liked from your stock build. Like BMFC said rooting isn't for end users, you can really mess stuff up when you have root access and not know anything, My first android phone is the mytouch 3G Slide so I don't know as much as others but I do have a Linux background so as to knowing about root I am aware that it is something for more advanced users, and everything I learned I read in the stickies and through trial and error. Asking for help is fine no wrong doing in that but you have to understand that unless you have some idea as to what you are doing you shouldn't dive into rooting your phone. I didn't root my phone until after the first few ROMs were out. I read up on rooting and what benefits it could give me, also in my reading you come to understand what happens when you flash a custom ROM, and when I did it wasn't easy(it was a pain) but it got done. and yes I ran into some problems. but there was already answers for them in the stickies. My advice to you is the same as BMFC's advice and go to Chiefz' Stock OTA 1.35 ROM and you will back at stock with flash lite and you beloved swype, because apart from that you can only get swype on CM6 and thats if you download it through a third party, stay on that ROM until you learn a little more about how android works, getting and setting up the sdk, and getting comfortable enough with adb and what needs to be done with root, go ahead and root it YOURSELF. I wont link you to swype, learn to use the search button, and learn to lurk this forum.

Wow. I didn't realize a simple question would ruffle so many feathers.
The reason I thought something was wrong is because my wife and I have the same phone, we got them at the same time, they were both rooted at the same time with the same rom. Some of the features that work on her phone don't work on mine. In my mind, something wasn't right.
Thank you to those who took the time to be courteous and helpful by pointing me in a direction to start looking.
there is no way, unless your wife is running a stock espresso based ROM that she would flash(lite) running in her browser. swype yes. flash lite no. you still haven't read the stickies have you?
Just for the hell of it. What's wrong with a new guy who realizes he has an issue that he would like resolved. Yes he did several things the wrong way.
1. Saw eye candy and wanted it (valuable lesson being eye candy is not always what you want.
2. Not educating yourself and Do it your damn self.
3. Coming to these forum asking for help without being prepared to be flamed (most xda seniors are hot headed)
4. If you can't do it yourself then you prob shouldn't have root
? Oops there be another ? Mark now I go to the q&a corner.
Ahhh sleep time

Now he doesn't want to help or return our messages and I am lost as to what to do.
I am not sure much about how he rooted it or what he did. I do know I get a cynogen screen when i turn on the phone and the rom is up to date.

Assuming you can figure out what to do, there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7534187#post7534187 which is a ROM that's based off the stock variety. Can't speak for bloat (didn't like stock rom) but it may work for you.
As for flashing, I am not 100% sure what state your recovery is so no idea if you can realistically flash a ROM, but it's worth a shot.
Also, on the Android Market, there's the ROM Manager, which may help (or hinder) the situation...

[Q] general help

Ok, so I was one of the lucky few with a gen2 device that was not getting the ICS update. I tried to scan for the update probably 50 times yesterday with no luck. After seeing that others where having the same problem I got frustrated, I flashed the update Zeronull posted in the developers forums. Worked great.
My question is now what exactly is to be gained from the whole process of rooting/unlocking/loading CM9, and some custom roms. I am not new to hacking hardware/software, but I am fairly new to android so I don't really understand what I am gaining from the gamble.
My tab is mainly a family device so there is some added risk with my 4 year old, and wife having root access to my tab. Not sure that is a great idea or not. So once I decide if I want/need CM9 how secure is it from the rest of the family bricking it after the fact?
The only thing in the developers side that really catches my eye is cossix swap mod. I am surprised no one has rolled that into a rom yet. Anyways, if that is all I am really looking to gain is the CM9 path worth it for me?
Basically after re-reading this I am just fairly clueless about CM9. Can anyone with some experience clue a brother in? What is it exactly that I am missing?
Thanks,
I hate to bump my on post, but I was hoping to get a few opinions on this before I let it die.

Root Advantages

Hey all, have an att LG Opt G Pro... love the phone but would love to be able to get rid of allot of that att junk I don't really use or want. Was wondering exactly what the advantages are and what all I can do once it is rooted. Where do you get apps to use... I assume they are not on the playstore are they.... apk's for rooted phones, are they up there....
What are the chances of bricking the phone, still have a year on contract so would hate to pay for phone i could not use... maybe should get insurance first lol.... see my deli-ma, would like to get the advice of other att users on the lg g pro and how much fun and better it has made their phone... what kinds of things they have done with it and changed etc etc etc... these kinds of things would be very useful...
currently it was running 20h I think it was, last three on build number. i have not updated since 2014, should I try and update first or does it matter...
any and all advice greatly appreciated... searched around but did not see a sticky with advantages of rooting listed... that would be a great sticky.... this is the beginning of this journey and i appreciate positive feedback... i realize there are many who are experts and probly weery of noobs like me... just remember once, a long, long, time ago, you were noob too lol...
