[Q] general help - Acer Iconia Tab A100

Ok, so I was one of the lucky few with a gen2 device that was not getting the ICS update. I tried to scan for the update probably 50 times yesterday with no luck. After seeing that others where having the same problem I got frustrated, I flashed the update Zeronull posted in the developers forums. Worked great.
My question is now what exactly is to be gained from the whole process of rooting/unlocking/loading CM9, and some custom roms. I am not new to hacking hardware/software, but I am fairly new to android so I don't really understand what I am gaining from the gamble.
My tab is mainly a family device so there is some added risk with my 4 year old, and wife having root access to my tab. Not sure that is a great idea or not. So once I decide if I want/need CM9 how secure is it from the rest of the family bricking it after the fact?
The only thing in the developers side that really catches my eye is cossix swap mod. I am surprised no one has rolled that into a rom yet. Anyways, if that is all I am really looking to gain is the CM9 path worth it for me?
Basically after re-reading this I am just fairly clueless about CM9. Can anyone with some experience clue a brother in? What is it exactly that I am missing?
Thanks,

I hate to bump my on post, but I was hoping to get a few opinions on this before I let it die.

Hey guys,
after looking around the interwebz for a few days, this looks like one of the best spots to sit on and learn from. I have had my evo from launch and it is fully updated. Recently, i have heard much talk about full rooting and froyo coming soon officially.
I am new to "hacking" phones. not sure if thats the correct word but i "hack" or have fun (not the bad way) on computers and used to on xbox360.
could someone please point me in the right direction?
The only reason i ask this is because i have seen several rooting tutorials that are not identical so i was curious if one is better than the others.
This is not a q and a forum. There is one butter this is not it. I suggest reading a lot more and then formulating a real question. There isn't a best method that is why there is more then one.

Do toastcfh root part 1 then unlock nand part 2. this is the best and official way to root in my opinion. And its really not that hard. But I think theres a few new ones floating around that are even easier! My honest opinion is to just read, and then read some more. And when your done reading, read even more! Youll be sooo surprised how much you will learn in this forum!

if you've appplied the latest OTA update (1.47.651.1), then you have to wait for dev. to come up with ways to unlock it (root). if you did not update the OTA then using toast method 1 and 2 would work fine....
If you found this site, you are already pointed in the right direction.
Don't take personally, since obvisouly I don't know you, but if you can't follow the guides here you really should not mess with your phone.
I do understand (90% sure) most of the terms and processes for rooting. I do have the latest update (1.47.651.1). So i guess ill have to wait until another root for this version.
Is there a certain time gap between update and root for current update that i should wait to look for. i know people come up with the root so its not exact time gap. im more asking does it usually take closer to a week or like a month. just so i can keep it in the back of my head

Root for froyo 2.2 problems

I know i know
this is a very touchy topic so i wanna take a different approach,,,lets say that devs are working hard on a root for 2.2 stock for all of us that are stuck ....why not let this thread be the new discussion for what is happening with root and why it is not happening yet ..like what devs are running into as far as problems go and what not...i am not a dev but i have been roming since the droid and hero an moment have come out ...why dont we help the devs as much as possible and all work together to achieve this common goal and not fight about it all day ...cause in the end we all just want root and everyone will shut up and start enjoying what their evo is really capable of ...thank you devs for all the hard work and such ..lets get this thing cracked asap...
Ps ...please would a dev who is working on this step up and give a status of what exactly is happening and if they need help...
There was no need to create a new thread for this...though I could understand tour frustration if I was in your shoes...
Sorry sir... you have wait like everyone else whoa stuck on the latest OTA.

Yes! I would love to have a real time transcript of all the devs' thoughts.
That would be fantastic.
Somehow I doubt that they would be jumping in here to update us, civilians, about their progress
Not to be the bad apple, but speaking realistically. When the Evo had 2.1, the Dev made comments all the time about that process and so on, and what to look for. This is different. No one is commenting at all. In fact, they are probable reading all these threads, looking at everyone's comment, calling each other and laughing. Why would they risk root, to help us?.. I'm just living and accepting the fact to live with the Official 2.2. Bottom line is, if they, the developers, were working on a exploit. What harm would it do to let the public know.. I'm not mad at the Dev. For 1, they're not getting paid an hourly rate to do this for the majority of people who will just download there hack without donating.. 2, they are already rooted. IT would be a different story if all the dev weren't rooted, and wanted total control over their phone. Then this would push them to find a way... And i mean thats just the way the world works. So you can't knock them for not finding a way... It is what it is... Just realisticly speaking
this process is killing me.....i miss hacking my nexus one, this evo 2.2 is a iphone that i cant fix up and customize...this sucks!!
I think the developers are busy on their ROMs. This seems to be more for the hackers. My question is: who are the hackers that have broken the ROMs in the past?

Think about it. If you were a dev with a rooted EVO, would you unroot and install 2.2 OTA and lose root, just so you could see if you could crack the 2.2 OTA?
God bless one of them if that's what they decided to do, but I wouldn't do that if I was in their shoes.

No. And like I stated in my first message, the developers are busy writing ROMs.
you dont need to unroot your phone to start trying to crack 2.2, unless im mistaken you can run the 2.2 image the sdk emulator and work on it that way. its how those who are writing roms probably test out their changes.

That may be true, but at some point the only way to be sure that the crack works is to test it on an EVO that has 2.2 either as purchased, or OTA updated. My point is that after anyone has put a ton of time and effort into getting something working just the way they want it to, there isn't much incentive to go and screw it up just to make someone else happy.

maybe you didnt get that you can have an image of the 2.2 ota.
and as a developer/hacker (i dont do phones so i cant comment on status here) the incentive is the fact you did it. trust, thats a very good feeling.
i understand its easy for everyone whos rooted to say, be patient, but thats all that can be currently offered.

My reading comprehension is adequate, thank you. My expectations are reasonable as well.
Rooting is a luxury not something that has to be offered up to the public. Up until recently it wasnt even considered completly legal. So for everyone here including myself for that matter that disregarded the warnings and took the update(also for the people who got their phones with 2.2 stock, thats just the way it goes.) Wait patiently, the devs dont owe you periodic updates on what they are doing with their free time. And enjoy your android phones, and if you wanna customize your phone, there are ways from the market you could do so with widgets and replacement launchers that can make your phone look original without rooting.
Agreed! Well said.

some issues after root

some background. My wife and I both bought Slides. Shortly after getting them she had someone she works with root hers. Everything worked great, I liked the way it ran and the lack of bloat ware so I had him root mine. Well after rooting mine I noticed that swype doesnt work anymore and flash(Website Flash) doesnt work anymore either. Now he doesn't want to help or return our messages and I am lost as to what to do.
I am not sure much about how he rooted it or what he did. I do know I get a cynogen screen when i turn on the phone and the rom is up to date.
Do you know what rom he installed?

This is exactly the reason that you shouldn't have someone root your phone unless you know what you're doing to do it yourself.
Best thing for you to do is to flash the 1.35.531 OTA update, which will remove root from your device and return you to the latest stock mytouch slide firmware. But honestly if you don't know anything about rooting or its benefits, OR ITS RISKS, then you shouldn't have anyone do it for you cus it makes you and your device a liability to this community. Everytime you have the slightest problem you're gonna be back here at the forum looking for someone to hold your hand cus you have no clue what you're messing with.
So I recommend you unroot your device until such time when you are able to fully understand the risks and capabilities of root. Go back to stock, then spend a lot of time here learning about root and what you might be able to use it for. For starters, ROOT IS NOT INTENDED FOR END USERS. If it was, EVERY phone would already be rooted when you get it. But its not. Its intended for ADVANCED users as a sort of "service entrance" to your device. This allows tech support guys (and gals) to do things that you shouldn't HAVE to worry about as an END USER; or, (my definition) a person, owning and using a device, with MINIMAL knowledge of the inner workings of said device. Its just like with windows....ANY IDIOT can get on windows and check their email. It requires almost NO knowledge to operate. Just the same, these phones are made so that any idiot can operate them with a bit of practice, but the critical parts of the system, where an IDIOT could really wreak some havoc, is(are) sealed off to most end users, to make sure they don't mess **** up. ROOT unseals all that so that you CAN really mess stuff up. And that's what will happen if you mess with stuff without a clue what you're doing.
Its in YOUR best interest to go back to stock. For now, anyway. Don't just accept your current level of know-how...LEARN HOW. When I got my G1 when they first came out, I knew NOTHING about programming or any kind of code, or any of that. But I have spent A LOT of time learning it all, and I'm still learning stuff all the time, and now I create my own themes, I patch code to make things work the way I want it to work, I fix all my own screw-ups without asking for help, and I'm damn proud of it. And you will be too, when you root your device all by yourself and don't NEED some non-replying jerkoff to do it for you...please take my advice, you'll be glad you did. Play it safe until you know what's safe and what isn't.

This doesn't help in anyway!!
I am not looking for someone to hold my hand. I am wanting to learn how to fix what someone screwed up. I am pretty sure during all the time you spent learning all the things you know with root you asked a question or two.
Back to the topic at hand. Is this something that can be fixed? Like I said I am not 100% sure what rom I have, pretty sure it is cynogen though.
The reason I want it rooted is because the stock slide sucks, I don't like all the crap that came preloaded. I like how the phone is rooted, I just don't like the things that are not working.
I'm pretty sure you'll learn the how's afterwards since you're going to be reading and absorbing info from this forum
But for now... fixing the issues at hand.
The problem on adobe flash is actually something not exactly fixable... the flash 10 is just not for our device (correct me if I'm wrong x_x) and so the current cm6 is just unable to use flash... =/
As for swype... I actually asked the same question when I flashed cm6 rom. The thread is in the Q&A subforum titled [Q]Swype on CM6? or something like that. There will be links to dl swype. Have fun =)
Hope this helps lol.

Well the problems you describe are bugs with the rom you are using and they will be the same for MOST roms since they're all based off cyanogens work. You SAY you wanna learn how to fix what someone screwed up but nobody screwed anything up, you just don't know what you're doing. If you want to fix problems that are specific to a certain rom, you need to look in your "about phone" section in settings and figure out what rom you are running.
THEN, go to the thread of the rom you are running. DON'T POST a question about swype or flash or keyboard lights there...the questions have already been asked and if there is a fix for your issue it will already be posted there somewhere.
And for your information, I used to ask questions all the time, that's PART of how ppl learn...but I NEVER in my time with android, have let anyone DO SOMETHING FOR ME. And that's all you seem to want, somone to root your phone for you, someone to tell you the answer so you don't have to waste time reading or searching for the answer...you don't even know what rom you're on, am I supposed to tell you THAT, too? You've displayed no desire to help yourself and the only ppl that get help around here are ppl that are willing to help themselves.
Its NO ONE'S job to man these fora to help ppl...anyone that helps anyone do anything here, they do it out of either the kindness of their own heart, or sheer boredom. Either way no one is OBLIGATED to help you, especially when the fixes for the bugs you describe have already been posted, and instead of searching for the answers you start a new thread, asking an old question, in the WRONG SECTION. There is a section marked Q&A which is SPECIFICALLY for asking and answering questions.
And if you hadn't noticed, I'm about the only person even paying any attention to your plight so don't be too quick to shun my advice. I will help you learn how to do things, ill help you figure things out if you get stuck, but I'm not gonna give you the answers or do it for you.
Go find out what rom you're running. Then look up the rom and search the thread for the bugs you're experiencing. If there are fixes for the bugs they'll be there.

If you didn't want anyone to hold you hand. why post asking for help? BMFC's post is actually what you should do. Also your phone isn't just rooted, its running a custom software. and as with any custom software its should be obvious that stuff you had from stock just isnt going to be there. (flash lite and stock swype.) Also THIS POST IS IN THE WRONG SECTION. IF YOU HAD READ THE STICKIES which I know for a fact that you didn't you might have learned a thing or two. seriously. is it that hard to read the stickies? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701241

Your problem isn't really a problem at all. you are running cyan0gen mod 6. That being said since it is a 3rd party android build due to copyright laws, cyan0gen cant add a lot of the things you liked from your stock build. Like BMFC said rooting isn't for end users, you can really mess stuff up when you have root access and not know anything, My first android phone is the mytouch 3G Slide so I don't know as much as others but I do have a Linux background so as to knowing about root I am aware that it is something for more advanced users, and everything I learned I read in the stickies and through trial and error. Asking for help is fine no wrong doing in that but you have to understand that unless you have some idea as to what you are doing you shouldn't dive into rooting your phone. I didn't root my phone until after the first few ROMs were out. I read up on rooting and what benefits it could give me, also in my reading you come to understand what happens when you flash a custom ROM, and when I did it wasn't easy(it was a pain) but it got done. and yes I ran into some problems. but there was already answers for them in the stickies. My advice to you is the same as BMFC's advice and go to Chiefz' Stock OTA 1.35 ROM and you will back at stock with flash lite and you beloved swype, because apart from that you can only get swype on CM6 and thats if you download it through a third party, stay on that ROM until you learn a little more about how android works, getting and setting up the sdk, and getting comfortable enough with adb and what needs to be done with root, go ahead and root it YOURSELF. I wont link you to swype, learn to use the search button, and learn to lurk this forum.

Wow. I didn't realize a simple question would ruffle so many feathers.
The reason I thought something was wrong is because my wife and I have the same phone, we got them at the same time, they were both rooted at the same time with the same rom. Some of the features that work on her phone don't work on mine. In my mind, something wasn't right.
Thank you to those who took the time to be courteous and helpful by pointing me in a direction to start looking.
there is no way, unless your wife is running a stock espresso based ROM that she would flash(lite) running in her browser. swype yes. flash lite no. you still haven't read the stickies have you?
Just for the hell of it. What's wrong with a new guy who realizes he has an issue that he would like resolved. Yes he did several things the wrong way.
1. Saw eye candy and wanted it (valuable lesson being eye candy is not always what you want.
2. Not educating yourself and Do it your damn self.
3. Coming to these forum asking for help without being prepared to be flamed (most xda seniors are hot headed)
4. If you can't do it yourself then you prob shouldn't have root
? Oops there be another ? Mark now I go to the q&a corner.
Ahhh sleep time

Assuming you can figure out what to do, there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7534187#post7534187 which is a ROM that's based off the stock variety. Can't speak for bloat (didn't like stock rom) but it may work for you.
As for flashing, I am not 100% sure what state your recovery is so no idea if you can realistically flash a ROM, but it's worth a shot.
Also, on the Android Market, there's the ROM Manager, which may help (or hinder) the situation...

2.3.6 Help w/ Roms & Data Issues?

Im a Noob here guys, so let me appologize in advance...Ive been a little trigger shy about starting this thread to say the least, so here are my issues...
Like a noob I updated my new gs2 right out of the box to 2.3.6 without even considering problems with roms. I was able to gain root access with zedomaxs gs2root.com tutorial, as I did with my last gs2 on original firmware.
I am currently on juggs 4.1 & its working nicley except my data speeds have dropped from 12-15 mbps down to 2-6. My battery life seems to be okay but i dont remember how stock was as i left the gs2 for a short while for the amaze wich had AWFULL battery life, so anything seems great in comparison. I want to get my data speeds corrected, & I also would really like to move to bombaridier rom but im not sure exactly wich roms I will be able to use with the ota upgrade I did? I was going to flash it & see if everything went okay as it seems to be a very attractive rom for my needs, but I would rather not do anymore flashing without learning if there are any risks with flashing roms while on the 2.3.6 firmware, & whether or not I am going to be experiencing issues on all roms with this particular update on my device.
I am also curious as to if I will be able to unroot my gs2 since I rooted it with the new firmware this time.
My final question is are there any stable AOSP roms I could use with this firmware? I am by no means experienced but I have rooted and flashed several roms on my old htc sensation but i have never tried aosp, so i suppose I may just be interested in an opinion on this matter.
I have read alot of info/threads on xda so I dont want to come off as lazy, & my brain is almost overloading with the vast amount of info I read on this AMAZINGLY informative site. I am a person who LOVES to gain knowledge & self educate, so your site has become quite addictive to me over the past 6-8 weeks!
I am very sorry, but I can be a little long winded, & if anyone out there could forgive my lack of understanding and provide me with any advice or guidance on what my options may be, & if I have any possible risks running roms on this firmware, I would be more than happy to click your donate button, as I am so very appreciative of all the free knowledge the great ppl of xda have provided me! I feel lucky to have access to your site, & I am looking foreward to one day becoming a productive & contributing member.

I am very sorry, but I can be a little long winded, & if anyone out there could forgive my lack of understanding I would be more than happy to click your donate button, as I am so very appreciative of all the free knowledge the great ppl of xda have provided me! I feel lucky to have access to your site, & I am looking foreward to one day becoming a productive & contributing member.
Thank you, Joe T.- androholic

The upgrade to 2.3.6 enables wifi calling and a new radio. So far, I haven't noticed any problems with the update.
I'm not familiar with the root method you used. I used the Odin method to root mine. It is possible to go back to completely stock though. So, you don't have to worry. I believe there is a thread in the general section, or development section about doing so.
There are two CM7 roms in the dev section. Both are basically alpha builds and have some bugs. There are also two roms the have touchwiz removed.
I'm not sure about the data speed issues. Maybe try flashing a different rom and see if it changes?

The method I used to root was odin as well. If I flash bombaridier I would assume I am safe then? I also have my stock root backup, as well as a backup of juggernaut 4.1. I have done the unroot process before, I just was not sure if it would have the same outcome since I rooted with odin on the new firmware. also,am I okay to flash any rom, even though I am on the 2.3.6 firmware or are there any that may cause serious problems being they were probably written for previous firmware versions? THANK YOU so very much for your reply! I dont want to beat a dead horse, I guess I am looking for confirmation that flashing roms on the new firmware, isnt a big no no , or requires any xtra steps....Thanks again to you!

Root Advantages

Hey all, have an att LG Opt G Pro... love the phone but would love to be able to get rid of allot of that att junk I don't really use or want. Was wondering exactly what the advantages are and what all I can do once it is rooted. Where do you get apps to use... I assume they are not on the playstore are they.... apk's for rooted phones, are they up there....
What are the chances of bricking the phone, still have a year on contract so would hate to pay for phone i could not use... maybe should get insurance first lol.... see my deli-ma, would like to get the advice of other att users on the lg g pro and how much fun and better it has made their phone... what kinds of things they have done with it and changed etc etc etc... these kinds of things would be very useful...
currently it was running 20h I think it was, last three on build number. i have not updated since 2014, should I try and update first or does it matter...
any and all advice greatly appreciated... searched around but did not see a sticky with advantages of rooting listed... that would be a great sticky.... this is the beginning of this journey and i appreciate positive feedback... i realize there are many who are experts and probly weery of noobs like me... just remember once, a long, long, time ago, you were noob too lol...
thanks everyone.... i appreciate it...
the bot
