[Ask Your Questions Here] Questions & Answers for myTouch 4G Users - myTouch 4G Android Development

CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE WIKI
I have decided to open a Questions and Answers thread on this section of the forum. This is a good way to keep the number of new threads with questions down to a minimum, which will make new threads essentially for people that are contributing to the HTC Glacier. This includes, but is not limited to, people that are providing the following:
- Roms & Kitchens
- Programs & Apps
- Fixes & Tweaks
- Skins & Themes
- Tips & Tricks
I would like to request the help from other members to keep the thread in order and in check. This will have the added side effect of creating an ever self updating knowledge base that will far extend the content of the Wiki. This will in turn save us from having to answer the same question a billion times...
Please refer to the Wiki first before asking any questions though! It can be located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Glacier

Wait, what? Not the same situation as the G2??

Can someone post a picture of the boot loader?

I love HTC sense but I hate espresso sense..
namely the launcher, it's just plain and ugly. Would it possible to pull the theme'ing features on the desire HD, desire Z and install it on the MyTouch 4G as an apk file?
I just want the launcher to look like the stock sense UI. Any ideas?

Yep, they got a temp root already. But no one has even started working on a permanent root yet.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part but ... has anyone confirmed if this thing has gorilla glass or not?

As far as recovery, the only way I see to get into it is through Android Commander..
I get to a red triangle with a red ! with a phone in the background.
Pushing volume up and power will then get you into recovery.
The standard list is...
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
All this is making my head hurt...

Thats hilarious

The only time I heard mention of gorilla glass was on the Wirefly review video Part 1, at 6:10 min mark.
I'm hoping that it's true, cuz I really loved the gorilla glass on my Vibrant

ok did that. i loaded the virtuos rom , and it looks nice , only one problem. ive been having this problem even with the verizon rom. whenever the screen timeout activates where the screen goes dark , the phone just reboots itself. the same happens if i press the button at the top to turn the screen off.. the phone reboots. why is that? as long as i change the setting to * never turn off screen * . it never reboots

NO!! Only use roms that are specifically made for your phone.
Do otherwise will give you an expensive paperweight.

my problem is i think its not really a htc normal firmware rather a dev firmware (i think) because there is a icon called devtools. apart from that it doesnt have market, my apps, scenes in personalize option crashes if i click them, no weather etc widgets, no file browser, cant install any apps which are transfered from PC, if i download from web browser of htc it doesnt reconigizes the package...
in simple words cant do any thing more than the pre installed apps which are also not all..
please tell me whats the issue.. im a first time HTC user.. loved iphone wayyy better atleast it wasnt that complicated..
please tell me how to get all apps back and fix crashes
i tried software update option but it was stuck on checking for 30 mins... tried many times.. no luck
so also need to know any other alternative method
and what version can this phone can support latest that doesnt lag and is also good...
PLEASE help me guys
Thanks
just to add... my phone itself it fine.. i mean wifi, calls, sms, bluetooth camera etc everything is working.. i dont see any hardware issue.. all i see is software issue, so please tell me the solution..
also i saw HTC wildfire some saying its HTC BUZZ and some saying its desire mini.. what is it actually? i simply have HTC WILDFIRE
If you flash the ruu for your phone you should be sorted.

Woh!!! Hold on there, let's not jump into an ruu straight away !!! We need more info..... can we get bootloader info for starters ? Power phone off then hold volume button down and then still holding vol down press power button.......inform us what you see on the next screen. At first impressions I would suggest first trying a gapps flash, but let's wait.

His rom is booting per op so I would assume he can get into bootloader. It is the first day he has the phone. He hasnt asked about rooting so why not flash an ruu? Seems like the simplest solution to me unless he wants to root.
Ok,I know he didn't mention anything about rooting but do you know of any stock Rom that has devtools app !! No nor do I ,so I'm guessing he is on cm7. Also now with more info we can see that he has a strange bootloader,I've not seen before either.
So which ruu are you going to recommend with his hboot ?

what does rooting means? and what are the advanages..???
i want a normal phone that has 7 different desktops witha weather widget (this has just 3), market google play , can install apps and do all the things that a normal htc user can do...
rightnow i can just use the apps that are preinstalled and nothing more...
this really sucks...
tell me did i get a faulty OS?
Can you tell me what the front of your phone looks like? Under your screen you should have a set of soft buttons which are, home key, menu, back button and then a magnifying search icon button ? Under them you should have a round trackball button yes ?

Mfg is an abbreviation for manufacturers warranty. Its probably expired by now though if the phone is secondhand.

Good point I don't know about that strange hboot. If he is s-on (which is unclear strangely) and locked to a particular carrier he will need an ruu with a cid that matches his phone. I would personally go with a froyo WWE Rom and see if he gets a cid error and if so try to find out the cid of the phone which I think you can do via fastboot.
It might be cm7 if the phone is second hand.
OP - from your bootloader screen, choose recovery (vol buttons for up and down, power to select) and tell us what it looks like. Also do you have an app called superuser in your app drawer?

yes please, hans moleman, you seem to be one of the "shoot first - ask later" type
It's kindly appreciated by everyone in the forum - those who seek for help and those who want to help - that you try your best. But please - before you suggest a RUU (which really could do a lot of harm in many cases) try to find out what's the problem, what hardware/software is involved, s-on/s-off etc etc - you mention it yourself: you have no idea about the HBOOT version - nor do I. And we already had that problem with a HBOOT version that looked at least similar to the known Buzz values - in the end it has been a bee and it looks like it's bricked due to an RUU...
Back to the topic: your latest suggestion was better
So texh could you try to do the following
- power your phone off
- press "volume down" and "power" and keep holding until something happens
- write down all the contents of the screen you get there

What are you talking about? an ruu is much safer than rooting and flashing custom roms. The ruu program carries out a lot of checks before flashing. It won't flash if the device id or cid don't match and it also checks the HTC signature before flashing. It is HTC's own software.
So is flashing an RUU not going to help? If not what do you think will help? The phone is not rooted, he cannot access recovery, I don't think he cares about root access so why risk it. He just wants to get his phone working.
Look back at the earlier posts if you want to see his hboot. It says buzz. And as said before if it is not a buzz, a buzz ruu will return a device id error.

That error pic isnt really an error but more a warning to say don't go any further, if you press vol up+power on that screen it should take you to the stock recovery i think. Not much to do in there though as its noobproofed........
Is it a desire a, i seem to remember some people from south america i think having problems getting root a long time ago on what was believed to be a wildfire but wasn't.
Check under the battery to see if it says desire a, I'll see if i can find a link to the topic if it is.
Edit: forget the desire a part i just found the topic and the hboot info is different to yours so i don't think its that. And hans is correct about ruu if it isn't a buzz or it needs a certain ruu it will give an error and stop the flash.

Anyway - and again: no worries - what I just wanted to say is: let's find out more about hard- and software and the problem before suggesting the stuff that is usually known as a last attempt. My point about the video is that you don't need to check the drivers thing. AAHK installs drivers for you. Anyway, it's a moot point.
You don't need to do anything to root it; you're already S-OFF. Do you have a recovery? Find out by navigating to the "RECOVERY" option with the volume buttons in hboot and selecting it with the power button. If there's nothing there you'll need to flash one; look at the PDF guide in post #7 of the Ace Think Tank guide. There's a section titled "S-OFF no recovery" starting near the bottom of page 8 or 9. Then, just flash a ROM from that recovery.
Note that I don't know of the ROM you referenced. Where did you get it?

My point about the video is that you don't need to check the drivers thing. AAHK installs drivers for you. Anyway, it's a moot point.
You don't need to do anything to root it; you're already S-OFF. Do you have a recovery? Find out by navigating to the "RECOVERY" option with the volume buttons in hboot and selecting it with the power button. Well, I hope you don't need to come to the IRC Channel for support, as I am an OP there...and FYI, the expert is not the guy who did that video but the dev you programmed the tool. The video is just a quick tutorial and not quite recommended.
I was not concerned, just asked what was going on as you were not clear at all.

The 4EXTupdater is an APK, so you have to install it directly in your rom with a file explorer as long as you are already rooted, otherwise you won't be able.
To flash recovery you have to be in fastboot usb. Hboot won't take it directly. The instructions are in the guide in my signature.
Do not rename the rom zip file. It is not an update but a whole rom, so you have to flash it in recovery (custom) from install zip from sdcard.
Use the guide in my signature, you have clear instructions for all that...:good:

Hello all,
when I try to start my friends HTC desire HD it automatically boots into Hboot and I can't get any further than this.

I've looked up on the forum for solutions but it didn't helped me out.
Edit: I've managed somehow to get to the recovery option but when I selected it I get the following (file in attachment)
Kind regards,

Did you do anything to it or did it do anything out of the ordinary just before it did this?

My friend said he didn't rom it, but another friend of him broke his screen and did let him repair it by someone who I not know. And I think he did something wrong with it perhaps.
I am now in the android system recovery but moving down isn't really an option the hardware key is stuck (I think))

You could try to find a compatible RUU and run it. Aside from that I can't really help because I have no idea what's been done.

Can I do a RUU with a phone that isn't working correctly? via fastboot then?
If the volume down key is stuck, then when you turn it on you're really pressing power and volume down, which is how you get into hboot. Open the battery compartment and see if you can unstick the button.

With the RUU I get error 120 battery less than 30% but when I stick it in it is 100% (I believe otherwise the battery is broken too)
I've managed it to get him into safemode can I do something from out of here?

When you're S-Off there's a little warning message that pops up on the splash screen on bootup, I'm guessing this gets rid of that. I am definitely not brave enough to try it, but it'd be cool if someone could confirm it worked.

Exactly that. If we wanted to we could add a custom message to it as well.
why not try and make a plug in for this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786498
unless it's been confirmed to not work on newer HTC devices?
It was a lot of fun playing with it on the HTC Inc4G LTE
unfortunately I don't know how to make the plug-in or I'd make one and try it when my phone comes back from Sonic.

it has to be made for that specific phone and hboot.
otherwise you're asking for a brick
actually anytime you flash hboot you're risking a brick..
but we'd need someone to edit our current hbot and make a patch for this phone and this hboot.

Agreed any time you flash hboot you want to pray to your god that there's no power outages, the laptop battery will last, no one will trip on any cord between the computer and phone, cross your fingers and hold your breath. This one was pulled from my phone and modified so it is 1.54 for vzw.
-- Edit --
It is also noted if for any reason you s-on with a custom hboot you brick.

always ruu before you s-on for warranty purposes, most people do not need a custom bootloader unless it is part of an exploit

I don't know how that relates to my comment. I was just letting people know there is no reason to flash a bootloader because of the HUGE risk of hard, hard brick and no benefits unless you are a hacker/developer. I am not unlocked but I would not try this anyway, no offense. What benefits does this carry? According to your pictures, this removed s-off and also locked the bootloader. Unless this removes all of those checks, it is stupid because we have no way to unlock.

If you look closely there are a few extra spaces in those lines. Basically it makes it look like its s-on and locked. I've found that it's easier to walk into a verizon store and get help when they dont think you've unlocked. It also removed the nag string on the boot splash when you flash a custom rom. I've been using something like this on my rezound for over a year and from the ppl in that forum there was a want for it. Yes hboot is a very dangerous part if you don't know what your flashing. If it makes anyone feel better they can do a binary compare of this hboot with an original hboot and see that only the strings were manipulated.
Basically it was something I wanted so I did it for this phone. If others want to use it that is fine too, I just don't want to release something that could potentially brick based off of my mistakes, but it's been working fine for me for over a day.

Sounds good, thanks for this. I won't flash it now because I don't need to risk it but if I ever need to bring the phone to Verizon then I'll keep this in mind.

From what I seen in the rest of the hboot no, it looks like it's obvious that its custom, s-off, and unlocked. This should also not be used for insurance fraud in any form or fashion. This is more or less to get people to not freak out and for people that like the stock look. As far as risk goes, having an s-off phone is dangerous since you can access the raw devices.
Looks nice!
