Come on folks...128gb microsd?!?!
At first I was excited about the Sandisk announcement (http://dailymobile.se/2008/10/20/sandisk-to-develop-128gb-micosd/); but then I asked one question--When will this end?
I'm torn between constantly buying "the next biggest memory card" versus start storing everything I need online.
Sure they both have their PROs and CONs -- but since 99% of my travels are in a 3G area...
...why NOT use one of the many FREE picture/file stores online?
...and why NOT watch movies and vids online instead of a downloaded copy to my memory card?
...and why not start storing my contacts, calendar, tasks and everyday To Do lists online too?
...and why not even run my desktop applications online where I can access them anywhere I have connectivity?
We Tech OGs know this "cloud computing (Web 3.0)" is nothing new--remember DUMB TERMINALS and THIN CLIENTS? Amongst other advantages, it was SUPPOSE to put a halt to ever-growing disk space needs and excessive licensing costs back in the 1980s and 90s. It didn't really fly...and so now Here we go again.
With only a handful of today's mobile devices having more than 640K of RAM, maybe Bill Gates was right after all when he supposedly said "640K of memory should be enough for anybody".

I am not traveling always in good 3G connection area and I like to carry arround the data I need. The more the better, for me it is realy that simple.
Wikipedia, MP3s, Navigation, Presentations, fotos, documents, etc.
With a smal card I have to select the data. The larger the card the easier it will be - just have everything.

Until about 2 years ago, I loaded gigs of TomTom and Mapopolis maps to my SD card. The problem was those maps NEVER had street names and areas less than 4 years old. So I abandoned that and started using Google Maps, YahooGo and Nav4All. The only downside is that an internet connection is now required. I'm now starting to go online with fotos so I can share. I abandoned loading encyclopedias, dictionaries and wikis to my SD cards a long time ago. To me loading those on a card is the same as carrying around hard/printed copies. It's outdated the second you put it on paper. By accessing those online, in theory, you'll have the latest updates.
My only concern with accessing contacts, calendar, tasks and documents online is SECURITY.
Not long ago I spent $60 on a 4GB micro SDHC
Haven't come close to filling it -- but when I saw a 8GB for only $25 last week, I just had to grab it.
I just might do the same when 16GB get to that price point.

I spent the equivalent of $12 on a 4GB Micro SDHC the other day.
I have the same problem and now it has been sorted!

Meanwhile this rule of thumb isn't true anymore. The pressure inside the cylinder affects the power of an engine too. So more cylinder capacity isn't neccessary that much.
Had a 512MB SD Card - was enougth but a bit too small ... !
Upgraded to a 1GB SD Card - was enougth but again became a bit too small.
Bought me a 2GB SD Card - damn, still not enough space ... !
Got me a 4GB Card - ... will it ever be large enough for my needs?
Sitting on my 8GB Card - ... not enough space !!!
Well, avoided so far the 16Gig Card because I think it is just too expensive! Hopefully prices will drop soon - so, 128GB would be cool, I could get rid of my 160GB USB drive.
However, I doubt that any currently available MOBILE HANDSET would be capable of handling a 128GB Card ... !

The more space you have, the more space you´ll need/use
So the "When is enough" will have to be answered by users and not by manufacturers. The day we don´t buy something that will be the day when they maybe say "Now it´s enough"
Keep in mind those Cards will be used as well for other things then Phones. with a USB reader ( that you could carry on your key chain) you could carry complete data of your desktop with those. (pictures. movies,music etc)
I am selling those readers and many company's that have been using CD/DVDs moving to USB readers with cards. >see the picture for sample<

I suppose the question is not necessarily whether or not "when will enough be enough" but more so "when will they develope phones with much better camera and video quality? That is when the large SD cards will come in handy. 4 years ago Samsung made a great phone for Verizon Wireless. It did nto sell well because it never had a great sale on it but the thing had amazing video, camera, and even voice to text on it.

like this nokia n98? id rather buy a camera and a phone/pda i mean its not like digital zoom is amazing or anything, but yeah that would use alot of space, so would a phone with better screen resolution then all of the games/videos would be bigger. there probably wont ever be an end because people are lazy so they program lazy and dont optimize code and people want everything to be hd so everything will be bloated just for graphics

it wouldnt make sencse to make a new subunit of SD if it can only go 128 Gb, because face it........ that isnt large enough to support another couple of years.
the jump from 2 Gb to 32 Gb was pritty big, 16 times the capacity.
32 Gb to 128 Gb is nothing compared to that first jump, its only 4 times bigger.

Thanks, but those are SD, not micro SD which is what we need for smartphones.
Thus far after much research it's looking like, for the UK at least, only the following phones will have 16GB of storage;
HTC Surround
LG Optimus 7
LG Optimus 7Q
All the others seem to have 8GB.
Bearing in mind I currently have an HD2 with a 16GB SD card in it, I was hoping that "upgrading" to WP7 would bring a jump in storage to at least 32GB. Now it looks like remaining at 16GB is the best I can hope for, and moving over to the HD7 would result in a halving of storage back to 8GB.
Anyway, the above 3 phones at least seem to offer the same storage as I currently have.
I'm guessing most of the phones only have 8GB so they can provide an upgrade path in 12 months time to 16 or 32, so that we can spend more money on buying yet another phone.
Bearing in mind I have 60GB of music and 20GB of photos, I'm a bit peeved. Especially as the iPhone seems to have up to 64GB.
I thought O2 were bumping up the HD7 to 16GB? At least that's what they have it listed as in their 'Coming soon' section and their press blog!
the hd7 in uk will have 16gh, some omnia 7's may do. I don't think the uk is getting the surround. I am hoping that the trophy has been hiding the fact it has sd cards as they are selling them on there website for that phone.
There have been a number of indicators recently that the HD7 has a microsd slot, so even a device with 8GB should be upgradable to 16 or 32GB. Jolly good.

I am hoping that this is true as even though I have never used up an 8gig SD card, the games on WP7 will most likely be bigger than the games on Android.
To be honest I am struggling with there thinking that 8 GB memory is enough.
This phone is supposed to be for gaming,music,video,photos and office Documents. not to mention if you record in 720P the phone will be full in no time.

Finally some adequate price. Hope we will see soon a good offers for other models as well.
I think I will hold off in buying HD7. I believe HTC will eventually raise the specs(hoping!wishing!) including the SD card slot. Might use my trusty HD2, which basically is HD7 with WM6.5 OS.

Samsung's site ( omnia7.samsungmobile.com ) state there's a 16Gb version under the Specifications.
Has anybody been able to actually CONFIRM this? Everyone I talk to denies knowledge if it even existing and Samsung haven't responded.
A 16Gb Omnia 7 is the only phone I'd consider getting now otherwise I'll just continue to wait.

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately the Focus is US-only and isn't available here in the UK (for some unknown reason). 40Gb sure does sound good compared to the majority 8Gb models available in the UK :/
Just been down to the O2 shop this morning. Had a look under the battery and no SD card slot
However there is a plastic label so maybe there is on under there? We'll not know untill someone disassembles but so far it looks unlikely.
As MS is been tight lipped about WP7 until now, I was surprised... but expandable memory should not be an issue as MS wants the users to use the phone as Zune and play games...
I can’t see a reason to restrict ppl from expanding the memory....
honestly 16GB will be fine for me as i keep my music and videos on my 60GB touch... its almost full.. so i can never ***** about not enough memory on my phone..
I really cannot understand why OEM's created this frustration with the amount of the internal memory. At least they are using a soldered microSD cards so all of us know how much the difference between 8 and 16 GB costs. Even the iPhone 4, as typical overpriced Apple product, has £500 price tag and 16 GB internal memory. For comparison Omnia 7 has the same preorder price and the miserable 8 GB.
How they imagine competing with all of the marvellous Android phones that are coming and even with the iPhone? Or they just experimenting with the new platform...

I have noticed this with Samsung time and time again, They place a great screen on this phone then use a poor camera, and skimp on memory. But still want top dollar for there product.
I understand the sound quality is poor compared to HTC phones as well.
It is a huge over-site not having a larger capacity for the memory, The manufactures are to blame here where are the 32 GB and 64 GB versions.
It almost feels as if the manufactures want this product to fail.
I hope they bring larger sizes soon.
Apple update the spec of their devices every year and I think Microsoft should look to do this also...
In addition to the Gyroscope and new processors metioned at MIX I would like to see the following...
Fall 2011 - Windows Phone 7.5
1. Front Facing Camera - Launched with Live Messenger, Skype etc...
2. 16 GB Minimum Memory - I have no space for new APPS on my 8 GB device!!

Low end devices would stay as WP7 and WP8 would support the high end features... Microsoft has already said this is the strategy.
I think the most important update should be software and increase in software features to improve the versatility of the platform. Windows 7 phones as at now are by no means low in specs.
Agrred the current specs are high enough for the momment. The main problem is software develpoers trying to create sual core supported software which, means its better if ms wait a while and do what andorid have whereby they have increased spped of the os and added new features and battery saving features mainly. Also speed wise JIT would be good.
The specs are fine, but I do see them improving, obviously. I've stated in other threads I see them updating faster because of market production and not because of necessity, unlike Android.
With that being said, I do see FFC coming this Fall. Though, obviously, they won't be mandatory, and will probably be featured on the phones on par with what's available today. Video out will probably be available sometime, though I don't think in Mango, but it would make sense with Netflix on the device. They won't go with multiple suppliers of processors, that takes away from the consistency of the device... And Qualcomm is a fine manufacturer... Why the need for change here?
Resolution has also been said it won't change, hasn't it? Really don't blame them, again, consistency. As far for hardware adjustments... No... Just... No.
And the memory option affects price. There are 16gb devices, why didn't you get one of those? I have 16gb -.- They need smaller devices to attract different users, you can't only have max devices on the market.

If Microsoft wants to wait until Fall 2012 to introduce half that stuff you have listed... They mind as well just give up now.
Do us all a favor and ask them to put better batteries in their smartphones. The issue with smartphones is not the hardware. Even 1st gen snapdragons are good enough to make a good, featureful, performant smartphone OS on... The issue is that these phones last half a day with heavy usage, when you could do 2-3 days of heavy usage on Blackberries and Nokia phones...
No one cares how pretty it is or how well it performs if they are tethered to a charger all the time, and that's pretty much the status quo for WP7/Android/WebOS and to a lesser extent iOS these days...
Even with 1800-1930 mAh batteries phones like the Galaxy S II/Atrix 4G etc. manage to have battery life measured in < a day of moderate use... That's pretty incredible (not in a good way, either). It's time for manufacturers and companies like Microsoft/Google to stop feeding the needless spec bumping and focus on something that matters more - making phones that won't be rendered useless for hours due to being tethered to a charger if you happen to doze off at night before you plug the charger into it.
Better Battery Life in general, as N8ter said. I think this is the thing iOS, wp7 & Android platforms really need to focus on more right now.

Memory is not that expensive, and if we are to have our music collections on our phones, Nokia and Apple are the only ones who seem to get that you need space. I'll pay a little more for enough storage.
The new processor spec's are fine, don't need dual core yet but would like to see them start to come out by early next year.
I really expect a front facing camera phone will be out with Mango due to Skype being released. One of the OEM's will have one as a flagship if not more. But do people really use this feature much? Not really, but it still has uses, and those who will use it and should be available with Mango imo.

Fall 2012??? OMG... If Mango can do good enough... Mango is still WIP, so why don;t they add some feature that might "Magnet" some other users? 1, 3, 5, 7,8 from Windows Phone 8 are good example to be put on Mango.

I agree, but the manufacturers charge too much for strage. Going from an 8 to 16 GB phone can easily add $100 to the price at times. It's ridiculous. They will nickle and dime at any opportunity.
Nokia phones only needed a decent size ROM. They have SD Card Slots. Same for Windows Mobile and to a lesser extent Android. iOS, WP7, and WebOS devices need at least 16 GB internal storage, because of the lack of an SD slot or the way the phone works with SD Cards (WP7).

Agree, and Mango needed to be coming out now, not in six months. They really dropped the ball releasing basically a feature phone in the smartphone market.

Nokia's N8 has 64GB internal storage (if I remember correctly). Doesn't NAND memory work better than internal + a removable SD card? I never got great performance out of my SD cards in BB, Android ect. And it seems MS wants everything to be sync'd through zune instead of having removable media ect.
I just hope there is an option for at least 32GB soon, but I would definitely prefer fast and efficient NAND storage like what the Focus has.

The N8 does not have 64 GB storage. I'm pretty sure it's 16 GB + SD Card Slot, just like Galaxy S phones...
Yep, just checked... 16 GB Internal Storage with support for up to 32 GB SD Card.
I used to install all my apps to a Class 2 SD Card in Windows Mobile as well as put all my music and videos on it and never had any issues with performance.
In any case, that's not a factor. SD Cards for for media storage, and you can get a high class card if you need it. As long as the phone has a decent amount of internal storage it's not gonna be a problem
I just rather the phone come with at least 16GB internal so I don't feel like I have to splurge for an expensive big SD Card on top of an already expensive device. Plus, it makes a lot of sense...
With the way WP7 works with SD cards, they're better off putting in a large amount of internal storage. SD Cards are how swappable storage and when you make them unswappable it defeats the purpose of even having the slot - especially when you have to factory reset your phone everytime you want to change it (which means you're need to get the biggest card possible off the bad, or deal with a ridiculous inconvenience later on if you want to upgrade it)...
Also, until Microsoft mandates storage types most manufacturers will continue to use SD cards. It allows them to spend VERY little money putting lots of storage whilst charging consumers a ton of money simply because there is a lot of storage there... SD Cards are ridiculously cheap compared to NAND, but you'd never know in the pricing...
Also, if an SD Card goes bad, the phone is much easier to repair than another with a NAND chip soldered in. It's as easy as opening it up, replacing that card, and factory resetting the device then sending it back... That can potentially lower support costs as well

I wish my Focus had 16GB thats for sure. I chose it as it had the best form factor, best screen, and Samsung's Chipset/Memory was also top notch. Why they chose to only put in 8GB is beyond me.
I generally buy tablets with at least 32 gb. I bought the iPad Air with 64 because I learned my lesson with the iPad 2 and filling it up.
When I went to Best Buy to pick up a Note 10.1 2014, they only had the 16 gb model. I could have waited, or picked it up somewhere else, but I wanted to take advantage of Best Buy's financing (18 months no interest) and I hate waiting for things.
After installing all of my apps and downloading the data for them, I have about 6 gb left. The problem is, I read a lot of comics. A typical comic in the Comixology app will run you about 100 mb or so. I delete many of them when I have read them, but I fall behind on my reading fairly regularly and accumulate quite a few. I also have a lot of articles in Pocket that I'm behind on and that takes about 600 mb.
Apps to SD is a myth on Samsung devices. I have confirmed that when you move an app to SD, it just moves it to a folder called "emulated" and really doesn't free up any space. Add to that that Pocket's "store cache on SD" feature isn't working and Comixology won't store comics on the external SD and I can basically only use the SD card slot for movies and music. So, I'm wodering: Will 16 (9) GB be enough? Or do I need to take this thing back and get the 32 gb model?
My real question is: How are those of you with the 16 gb model getting by? Is your internal space filled up? Are you wishing you had the bigger model?
Ive had other tabs that were 16g and as long as I was mindful of where I stored my books and photos I never ran inyo problems. I also make sure my email only syncs 5 days. With my work and personal accounts I get way to many. For reading I use Moonreader because unlike aldiko it doesn't force me to put my books on the device. Hope this helped

I have had 16 GB tablets as well, but they generally have much more of that 16 gb available. All of the touchwiz and SPen features leave us with just over 8 GB on this thing. There's also the issue that, if we fill it up completely, it will hurt performance. So we really only have about 6-7 total out of the box.
I'm taking it back and getting the 32GB model. I love the tablet, but I need internal space.

I generally buy tablets with at least 32 gb. I bought the iPad Air with 64 because I learned my lesson with the iPad 2 and filling it up.
When I went to Best Buy to pick up a Note 10.1 2014, they only had the 16 gb model. I could have waited, or picked it up somewhere else, but I wanted to take advantage of Best Buy's financing (18 months no interest) and I hate waiting for things.
After installing all of my apps and downloading the data for them, I have about 6 gb left. The problem is, I read a lot of comics. A typical comic in the Comixology app will run you about 100 mb or so. I delete many of them when I have read them, but I fall behind on my reading fairly regularly and accumulate quite a few. I also have a lot of articles in Pocket that I'm behind on and that takes about 600 mb.
Apps to SD is a myth on Samsung devices. I have confirmed that when you move an app to SD, it just moves it to a folder called "emulated" and really doesn't free up any space. Add to that that Pocket's "store cache on SD" feature isn't working and Comixology won't store comics on the external SD and I can basically only use the SD card slot for movies and music. So, I'm wodering: Will 16 (9) GB be enough? Or do I need to take this thing back and get the 32 gb model?
My real question is: How are those of you with the 16 gb model getting by? Is your internal space filled up? Are you wishing you had the bigger model?

You can use Folder Mount to move programs to the SD Card too.

Same here thinking of selling my 16gb and get a 32gb. Games alone fills up storage fast. Having an sd car doesnt help either

Just got a 16GB at Best Buy for the same reason as OP (wanted to use financing, didn't want to wait) - haven't done anything with it yet, but I'm getting more and more nervous that I'm going to run into trouble with the storage space - I expected to be able to move more onto an external SD card, but it sounds like that's not so workable after all?
If I root, I have more options, but I'm reluctant to do that if I don't have to... Anyone else have a similar conundrum?

Not sure if this is an option for you, but I bought the 32 gb model from Newegg with my preferred account. 12 months no payment or interest. And no sales tax unless you live in CA. Taking the 16 back to Best Buy. Better too much space than not enough.

So you have the 16 GB and over 11 GB free? That I can live with, and it's about what I would have expected from the OS and bloatware... I can't decide if I want to try fot the 32 or just deal with the 15 (I'm not going to game with it, and movies/media I'd run off the SD card no matter what)...
I'm in a state of acute analysis paralysis! Someone decide for me...

you'e kind of answered it yourself tbh...Gaming will take up the majority of the space of a tablet. Applications are normally around 20mb to a max of 100mb and some rare ones larger. Games on the other hand well the high graphic games anyways are over a 1GB so space would be an issue if you were to play loads of games.
honestly if you have no intentions of gaming 16GB would be plenty for you although if you could afford the 32GB then go for it since its always nice to have loads of space.
Ofcourse only you can really decide but I'm holiding out for a 32GB because I would like to have atleast a handful of 1GB games to keep me busy when I'm at the airport waiting for my flight or on the flight itself.

I am considering getting the G3 and theres about £50 difference between 32 and 16gb version, is the 3gb/32gb actually worth it? Seen some tests and the difference was hardly noticable...anybody has any experience with both versions and could compare?

I don't have the link handy but a review was done with both versions, and the benchmarks were nearly the same. With microsd support, I'd see no reason just for another 1gb of ram personally.

Every android phone I've ever had from 256kb to 2gb has eventually needed more memory. More memory means you can run more, cache more and be future proof. If your only keeping the phone for a year, then 2gb will probably be fine, if keeping for 2 years then I would get the 3gb version
Not exactly sure what 50 euros is in usd but if it's any where from 50-100 it's well worth it imo, especially since you get a sdcard & ram upgrade.
2gb ram has been the flagship standard for a while now, my HTC one gets pretty close to full ram usage at some points. More ram guarantees smooth performance for heavy usage as well as future proof specs, and don't forget the g3 has that qhd resolution and once higher (than 1080p) resolution videos become more common you'll be glad you went with the extra ram.
well the 16gb version, not sure what batch is it and where is it imported from(assuming Korea) goes for 1950 PLN = 373.8150 GBP according to google while the 32gb version which is imported from Korea goes for 2250 PLN = 431.3250 GBP so yeah not a big difference but still.
The thing is that I dont really play games on a mobile, most of the time I would just use it for browsing, mail, facebook, gps/maps, apps and camera damn, decisions decisions...

Well i never had the choice... Only 16gb was available in UK. I would defo spend another 50 quid to get extra storage... You're planning to spend a lot of money already so extra 300pln is not that bad isn't?

Personally I would just save the money and buy the 16gb and get a massive SD Card instead. I doubt there is any noticeable difference in performance unless you have a gizillion apps open at the same time. In fact I remember reading an article where an LG employee says the phone is optimised to run on 2GB RAM.
The only reason I can think of to get the 32GB version is if you do not plan on getting an SD Card, then the extra storage is definately worth it. And maybe resale value will be higher...

I think the extra on board storage is, now, very important as, in the up to date google builds, moving app data to sd is very restricted.

I picked the 32GB from Germany, very happy I did so.
Get the one with 3gb ram, I can't believe they are still releasing phones with 2gb ram.
I have a Z1 and since I started using a custom launcher whenever I have some apps open and press the home button the homescreen redraws and it's not nearly as quick as before.
Also some apps don't stay cached when I reopen them.
The G3 with its massive resolution should eat even more ram.

I've just read a review here http://pclab.pl/art58419-7.html where they've tested the 2gb version and said it lags a lot, the CPU and GPU gets hot a lot, that it would be better if there was full HD than QHD, that the screen dims weirdly and that the screen gets this weird sharpening effect....
christ I dont know what to do :/ z2 is nice but it has a lot of issues, one's camera isnt good enough these days, g3 3gb is probably most future proof but the more I read about it the more doubts I get...

True, guess it depends on what you use your phone for. I don't do any gaming so the app data space isn't that large.
If the difference in price is ok then it makes sense to get the 32GB I suppose. Here in Singapore, only the 32GB version is available and only S$755 sim-free which is relatively cheap for a new flagship phone.
I'm still deciding whether to get this or the G2 which is only S$520 now!
I'm planning to buy the 32gb version. What I like to know is if the custom roms will be different or will they all be suitable for this version?

Hi,
I have got both phones at the moment (Model D855) and I would strongly suggest you spend the the extra few bucks on tthe 32GB phone. Not as much for the ROM but for the RAM. Today I have installed the same apps on both phobes after rooting them and installing TWRP recovery and the difference is very obvious especially when having several apps open in the background. Although many phones could do perefctly with the amount of RAM the 16 GB model offers, I think there is a difference in this phonbes screen specs. This fabulous screen asks a lot of capacity which I think is the reason the 16 GB version gets very leggy. It's better if you reboot every now and then but I recon you'd get very anoyed at having to do that 3 times a day.
The price difference is big enough to go for the 16 GB version. You'll most prbably regret in a few months.

I have the 16g d855 my phone now runs at 300mb free ram i bought it for 380 euro and the 32gb was for 500+ so the difference was big. So if you have that money go for 32 a test on youtube on benchmarking both versions shows that 32gb is 5-7% faster and the results proofs that.
