[Q] HELP!!!! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, hope im posting in the right section.
i have had my desire since it came out , rooted it straight away , flashed loads of diffrent roms (from here) but now all of a sudden my desire has started crashing all the time and when i say all the time i mean about every 15 mins. I take the battrey out, boot use it for a min then when i next go to use it it wont do anything and i have to take the battrey out again and boot.
i have tried lots of diffrent roms it still does the same, i have even tried to run backups from rom manager and still the same. i have run antivirus still the same.
any ideas
thanks

It sounds like a kernel issue (too much undervoling or overclocking maybe, and some ROMs might not contain a kernel image), but first of all it would help us if you told us what ROM you're actually using right now.

Try to flash your sd rom.
If you use a2sd..partition again.
Full wipe again and flash you favorite rom.
If the problem still percist....Flash an official rom better old one 2.1 for no change to newer boot. Test the device if still freeze.
If everything ok, root again your phone ...partition again sd and then flash your favorite rom.

I've been having the same problem mate. Just flashed back to stock 2.1 and all seems fine now. Will reroot later this week and see what happens!

Right sorry for the late reply the misses made me paint the kitchen before the new floor was put in.
well tried everything so then tried flashing back to stock but it carnt find bootloader (using magic mem card)
any more idea's?
ps im using aurxtsense 8.0
i was thinking it was something to do with clocking as well.
mine seams to have calmed down now, it still couldn't find bootloader though when i tried to flash a stock ruu.
i formated my memory card and re-flashed aurxtsense 8.0 and it hasn't crashed since.
haven't tried doing anything since because i aint got time to sit and sort it out at the mo if something goes wrong again

Not sure what the means but you should be able to flash the ruu from HTC or if your phone is branded then one from the network. There's a like to them all in the dev section.
Can tell u though that I flashed back to stock and had no problems. Bit since rooting again its back. Even wiped my SD card and recreate the partitions. Doesn't seem as frequent this time though. I went straight to a hd Rom. It never used to happen on older custom roms and do think its something to do with the volting & clocking.

[Q] DHD Camera Auto-Focus Problem

The problem I'm having is now that I have Leedroid 3.3.3 installed on my Desire HD my phones camera will no longer auto-focus.
Before you ask have you made sure the auot-focus is selected in the phones camera menu yes I have.
The things I have done to rectify this are:
I've made sure I have the right Radio & Kernal for the Rom I'm Using
I've downgraded my Leedroid Rom to previous versions but nothing works
I've asked for help and left bug reports on leedroids mini site and no help
I've tried to install the Madaco 17/Nov 1.32.405.6 r1 - HTC Desire HD Stock ROM with Online Kitchen but I can't boot past the HTC screen even performing a factory reset, battery stat rest, and a dalvik wipe still no luck.
I'm not sure if Leedroids new Roms uses a different EXT format like "EXT4" where stock Roms use "EXT2" and this is why I cant get MOdacos stock rom to boot and therefore I need to wipe a EXT2 to my phone? I wouldn't know how to do that anyway.
I've done google and xda searches for how to get the auto focus to work again and all I come up with is I should go back to stock and see if this helps. Unfortunately I can't get a stock Rom to boot properly so I'm left with asking for help here.
If I'm in the wrong forum or posted in the wrong place I do apologize I believed since I'm on a Desire HD this is the most appropriate place.
Hi!
Did you solve it?
I have the same problem, the camera don't make the focus, don't know why.
thanks!!
Any solution in sight?
I have similar problem on my classic Desire (Bravo).
Autofocus fails on far away objects, everything closer than ~1m is ok, anything else I recognize some focus action in the live image but it stops on the blurry side
Using InsertCoin 1.1.1 with the latest Radio.
Seitchin ROM to an older LeeDroid didn't help)
No luck yet I'm afraid I'm in the process of backing up my phone and trying different roms to see if that helps.
I'll post here if I come up with a solution.
Solution
So I called HTC here in the UK and was told the phone needs to go back which I sent to them but before you do there are two important things to remember.
1) s-off needs to be turned to s-on
2) you need to send the phone back with the latest os version
I got my phone back and the lovely guys at the service centre even replaced the entire shell, battery cover and sim cover for free how nice.
I'm going to guess it was a hardware issue rather than a software issue because the phones software came back exactly as I sent it with t-mobiles splash screen with no sound because the sound files were never on my phone to start with.
I tried everything before sending it back updating, different roms going back to stock rom etc etc but the only thing that worked in the end was HTC fixing it.
Luckily the phone was still under warranty and the shipping and repair was free phew!
Good Luck

How to hack / modify Desire Kernels???

Hi all!
I have spent over half an hour searching but to no avail so thought I'd ask here, how are the kernels hacked or modified?
When it comes to the real tech stuff I'm a bit lost, and to be honest before I stumbled across this site I knew nothing about making custom ROMS, but thanks to all of you out there, you have taught me loads without me asking much, so its here I need to ask!
Thanks in advance for your time & replies,
Arty.
just search the web for "linux kernel" the android kernel is a linux one.
when you know a bit about linux kernel you can add kernel mods to it, as in android.
you just need to download the source of the kernel modify it and compile it than.
hope this helped a bit
ps.: and if you dont have the source you have to be a tech/kernel genius like -snq
Thanks for your reply there crendot!
I was afraid I'd have to know about Linux stuff, which to be quite honest I dont!
I have messed about with a Ubuntu Virtual Machine in the past (when I first read how to root the Desire) but I find it too difficult to understand, I'm much more at home with the old DOS commands personally!
Only reason I ask is that my fone is playing up and has overheating / reboot loop issues with anything greater than Android 2.2 (since it came back from repair when I dropped it & cracked the screen completely) and so far I am stuck with my own slightly customed Rooted 2.2 with standard features (no 4-in-1 menu, no wake & unlock on trackpad and the DSP manager wont work) also, I have not yet tested it, but I know only a few kernels will let me send & recieve MMS, the previous build was a lightly customed LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM, but alas kept bootlooping after it became warm and I found I couldnt do much with it :-(
I am hoping to get a shiney new Sensation soon, but until then I wanted to know how to modify the kernel to add / remove stuff!
Is there an easy way to take a kernel file & be able to 'read' it so I could copy the stuff I need into the stock kernel at all, or is that my wishfull thinking again?
Thanks again & sorry about the long reply!
Arty.
to understand what a kernel for the desire is, u can download the stock one on the htcdev.com site http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
for example u can download the latest for our desire: "HTC Bravo – GB MR – 2.6.35 kernel source code"
that is the source code..u will see there are thousands of .c files...is not easy at all modify the kernel..it requires strong skills on linux and C language
about the send sms and mms, that is related to the rom and ur apn settings i think..not to the kernel..the kernel handle very low level actions..
maybe u would like to make custom roms..this is a bit much easy if u just cook it for example with the android kitchen (search for it)..the rom contain the kernel and the operating system and some apps
so lets check the facts!
did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
or have you flashed the new rom instant?
i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms
if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^
andQlimax:
Thanks for your reply also!
I know the APN settings for the mobile data & the MMS as I have written them down, the strange thing is I rooted my fiancee's Desire with the same ROM I was using at the time & she couldnt send or recieve MMS either (I'm O2 and she on Orange, both contract) and I have only found a few custom ROMs that allow the sending & recieving of MMS messages.
Also, I can make custom ROM's, I use Android Kitchen for most of the stuff (such as de-odexing, adding root, bash, busy box etc) but I find mostly when I bake the ROM using the kitchen I have errors on install, so I just prefer to use the kitchen for adding the needed stuff, then I'll just use windows to add / remove apps, boot animations & the audio files I want and just zip it myself & flash which has a higher success rate if I'm honest!
crendot:
so lets check the facts!
Q: did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
A: No, I didnt have stock ROM on, I still had either LeeDroid HD or a HD InsertCoin ROM, which when I got the phone back I did a nandroid restore (I make them quite regular & copy them to my PC for extra piece of mind!)
Q: or have you flashed the new rom instant?
A: I also have installed an untouched ROM(untouched by me) a day or so after as the nandroid backup wasnt the version I wanted, I was due to be on holiday to Blackpool for a week, so I flashed the LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM on both my desire & my fiancee's desire, hers was stable, mine I couldnt have the screen on for long before it got too hot (managed about 5 picture captures before I had to turn screen off for a while or it got too hot) then thing is, my fiancees gets got too, mine is the metal holders for the memory & sim cards, i either have to place something cold on them like a glass or even hold a fan to it for a few minutes until it cools down again!
Q:i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
A:My current ROM is the standard one after downgrading HBOOT & using Unrevoked, but I used the phone's update feature to update everything to 2.2, then I rooted it and all works fine, BUT, if I add any modifications, like circle battery it is too much for the phone & gets too hot & power cycles, it gets to the boot anim then automatically reboots again, it can do this for about half hour before it works again, but I mostly just pull the battery & put something cold on the affected area! Yesterday I put my fone in the freezer for 10 mins, but using even the most basic customisation was getting hot again so I reverted back.
Q:if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
I have tried a number of other ROM's, but I think I will just stick with what I know works for now!
Q:dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
A: thanks for that, think I'll leave them alone for now lol!
Q: i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
A: Nothing went wrong with the flashing, as Ive done it so much in the past year or so I know what its sucessfull or not!
Q: ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^
A:Thanks!
I really dont know what the cowboys done with my fone, but they have totally screwed it up, the microphone dont work and I have to almost eat the damn thing n shout, even then sometimes nobody can hear me! The WiFi signal is horrendous since it came back, can only get a full signal if I sit on top of the router, so using the WiFI out of the room is now out of the question! I also noticed they had cut off or pulled off something that I am convinced is the WiFi aerial, it sits just under the flash, a black tab it looks like, they insist they didnt do it, I KNOW otherwise!
When I first saw the phone, the back cover wouldnt fit on & it looked like they hadnt installed everything right, so they had it back as also the in-call speaker didnt work either, there are still outstanding problems, but as I have left it so long (main shop in Glasgow, me in Paisley with no way of getting there myself) I doubt they will do anything about it, i am SOO angry there isnt a swear word I dont shout every time the bloody fone hets hot & power cycles!
Again thanks for all your replies & sorry for the essay lol!
Arty.
hi, ok it really sounds like they have messed up your little desire!
first of all i want to apologize i thought you dont have a clue about anything ^^
so i would suggest you try to flash a new radio maybe the 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 helps, if you have it on your mobile reflash it just to be sure(if you have a different hboot, you have to do it with fastboot)
if this didnt help, i would say you try to flash the RUU
and when that fails i would start yelling at the customer support
wish you the best
ps.: i just started thinking if it is maybe the battery, change it with a/the other one

can i have multiple roms on sd card "installed"

is it possible to install roms to a sd card, and when switch phone on select which one to load to?
I have used sense stock and ARHD since owning phone, and happy with it, just installed a cm nightly, and likling its lightweightness, want to check miui and also will want to try ICS whe navailable, and also wouldnt mind trialling a few of the other roms out there. but hate having to reconfigue it to my settings and re download all my apps again (doesnt seem to do it automatically).
so has anyone developed a way to install roms to a sd card and boot into whichever one, then they can be pre configured, apps stored all in one place that each rom access' al ldata is shared (to save space and eliminate duplicates of same data for each rom)
im not a great techy, but heard you can have multiple os on a pc in partitions?, and thought read something similar was developed for HD2, but cant find anything for the desire HD.
thanks for reading..
I do remember some efforts to dual boot this phone but I dont know where they went. Most likely stopped. There was a beta though.
There's an app in the market called Boot Manager which allows you to do that (for up to four ROMs if I remember correctly). There was a thread in the dev section about while it was still in beta, should still be floating about.
Disclaimer: I've never used it, just pointing out that it does exist.
//sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk; all errors entirely intentional.
Edit: Double post, because I'm on my phone and still half asleep
There are a few of us out there that use Boot Manager
I've not had any major issues and the Dev's are quick at getting things resolved for user's that may have issues.
Depending on the ROM you are trying to install, due to custom install scripts and the like - you can run into install issues.
#However SmokeyBong has very kindly produced backups that can be restored via boot manager and then they work fine - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257450
The Dev's thread is here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184173
They also have a forum and some other usefull apps.
Please note I'm not trying to sell you their products and/or services - just a happy user of Boot Manager.
If you go ahead and buy/try etc and have issues someone here will help you out.
Thanks,
Del
Brilliant that sounds like what I need. Ill try. And will buy if does as I would like. Thanks for replies

[Q] help understanding kernels

Hi I might want to flash another kernel but gather it would be best to know more first. Firstly I get that it is the bridge between software and hardware.
If I flash another one that didn't come with the rom (I am using cyanogenmod 10.1) is it likely to cause problems? Also if it did would restoring a backup from rom manager return it to the former kernel or is the kernel on a lower layer which would remain unaffected?
I read that it is responsible also for managing processes/performance so if I flashed the stocked kernel would that then mean that the battery drain etc would be as if I were running stock android?
Search the forum or try it out. I guarantee you'll find the answers to your questions.
If you don't like it restore your backup and try again
Let me start by saying I've never flashed a custom kernel separately, one which did not come with a rom. But let me say this: since a nandroid takes a backup of the boot.img, which i believe is the kernel, i would think the backup would restore the previous kernel. As far as problems, I'd say you'd find that only by reading through the kernel threads, but it would seem that kernels would be optimized to work with many roms, undergoing updates as needed and having particular problems here and there. I say try it and report back. While I support reading and searching, and am aghast at how many posts repeat the same questions, i also think there are learning opportunities here, and sometimes repetitions teaches others, and digs out threads and topics we would not have otherwise accessed.
Body is mostly right. A nandroid restore will restore your kernel if you want it to. A kernel won't necessarily work the same on different ROMs though. Try 2 or three and see if you find one you like. I always end up back on the stock kernel myself, though I've previously had good luck with Trinity.
Well yes it did flash back to the original kernel because I had to restore a backup and luckily its OK.
After flashing the stock kernel it wouldn't boot up properly. Kept doing continuous force close errors on the lock screen after ages trying to boot that I couldnt get past coz they continuously popped up.

[Q&A] [ROM] [04/10/14] [Unofficial] CM 10 for HTC Desire 300 [Public Beta]

Hello,
I had a problem with my HTC desire 300 and I took it to a servis, there they put the cwm on my phone but my wifi isn't working, or its working a little bit and then it says that I can't connect.
So, I'm new here and I don't understand all the words here and I'm confused, so can you please explain me how to restore my htc to stock rom?
Interesting, I didn't even know my thread had a Q&A section
May I ask what was wrong with the phone before you had it serviced?
So the service center unlocked your bootloader and flashed a custom recovery?
They deliberatly voided your waranty? This sounds wrong on so many levels, please tell me you gave them permission to do so.
cwm is clockworkmod recovery btw and you are asking in the cm10 thread, does that imply that they also flashed this rom?
I don't know what to say to this except get your money back and/or sue them unless you actually asked them to do so.
Flashing a userdebug build on an enduser phone in a service center without being asked to do so is criminaly negligant imho.
The wifi in this rom is working fine (at least in the latest available build) so it might also be a hardware problem.
Could you tell me the version number of the rom you have on your device? (Settings->About Phone->CyanogenMod version)
To return to stock you would need the backup of your original rom and use cwm to restore the device.
That's why the OP includes a reminder that you should always make a backup before flashing a different rom.
There are no official htc RUUs available for this device, so without that backup you are out of luck.
I couldn't turn on my phone, it was stuck with the HTC logo, so I took it to the service and they told me it was a software problem and that they can fix it. After fixing it wifi worked 3-4 days and then stopped, all passwords are forgotten and its says '' Failed to connect network''. I know that its the clockworkmod when I press volume down and power.
When I go to recovery it says cwm advanced edition 5 cwm base version v6.0.3.7 philZ
I'm sorry If I asked in the wrong field but I'm so frustrated and just want my wifi to work somehow..
I don't mind you asking. I was just surprised to get a pm from a bot saying that my thread now has a Q&A.
I'm glad to see that it's still the stock rom you are on. But I don't know why it would bootloop or suddenly loose wifi.
Just out of curiosity, is the bootloader still locked? And is it the broken philz recovery with the graphical glitches that crashes on exit?
I don't understand why they would need to change the recovery. If the device is not repairable via factory reset or original recovery.
They should've just sent it in to htc for a replacement unit.
There are 2 things you can try now:
Try the factory reset option in the bootloader and if it doesn't work get in contact with htc customer support.
or
Replace the recovery, backup your system, check if wifi works in the cm10 rom and if it doesn't work
then reflash your backup before asking the htc customer support for assistance.
But be aware that the more you mess around with the device the less inclined htc will be willing to help you without charging you for the repair.
I tried the factory reset and nothing happens, still no wifi.
How can I replace the recovery?
Thank you!
First you need to set up your pc so it can communicate with the device via the android debug bridge.
There should be many tutorials on how to do that on this site. Just find one that explains how to get adb and fastboot working.
Since your radio and build version are different then mine I'd like to be on the safe side since I don't know what the service center did.
So activate the usb debug in the stock rom, and open a terminal.
Type: "adb shell" to connect to your phone and then type "cat /proc/emmc" and post the output here.
It should look something like:
Code:
dev: size erasesize name
mmcblk0p17: 000ffa00 00000200 "misc"
mmcblk0p34: 00fffe00 00000200 "recovery"
[...]
thank youuu so much I will try it..
I'll take it to the service again, and I'll let you know what he told me about the new recovery, and the wifi and everything that he made on my phone :crying:
Don't forget to ask them why they think it would be better to void a customers warenty by unlocking the bootloader,
instead of using it to get the manufacturer to replace the device if it's broken.
just to let you know that I took my htc to the service again, and they told me that the wifi is broken and they need to change the wifi chip or card I think...
Google Play has stopped working
Hi guys.
I have problem with Google play. I have instaled gapps for CM 10 (downloaded from cyanogen wiki). Everything works (youtube, gmail, google music, google sync,...) except Google play store...
Gapps was instal via recovery.
I tried to donwload only Google play app, but it get : Android App Not Install. An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed.
Did anybody has same problem?
Thanks
Hi,
Just flashed the ROM on my girlfriend's phone and I gotta say its pretty nice she's quite happy with it and I gotta say it made her phone a lot faster so thanks for that from her ill keep an eye on it to see if she experiences any problems and let you know.

So far you are the first with such a problem. I can only assume that you grabbed the wrong gapps version.
In order to start fresh you'll have to do a full wipe (format system & data) because gapps will persist if you simply reflash the rom.
hello,
can you please upload the source of your rom to github?
thank you
Progress?
2 problems
day 2 of testing. nice work, thank you for providing this custom rom. signal strength is an issue. but battery usage is normal. I have two problems:
1. the weather does not display on lock screen.
2. google or other location based services cannot identify my location.
3. When I try to install Facebook app, it says this version of android is not supported.
can you please help me on this?
I have been using this ROM for a while, I have to say it was a horrible thing to install (not because of the ROM though, my phone doesnt read the internal SDCard in recovery.) and I have not had any issues apart from one which I will get to later, than you OP for making this, now what we need is a custom kernal to overclock this sadly weak phone.
CyanogenMod runs so much better than Stock sense 5, but I have a issue when exiting or entering apps, it will get a certain area of the frame and make a grid, this also sometimes happens while changing rotation, however it is alright to live with.
We need a cyanogenmod 11/12 port now

i'm willing to make cm 12 for this device as i own it, but HTC hasn't released the kernal source as of yet and i don't think they will at all.
if they do, send me a message and i'll start to port cm 11 or 12 and an overclocked kernel
app2sd
hi
i installed and used this rom for about a month and it was really OK. thanks
but the only thing that needed is Move2sd option in app settings and i dont know how to enable it, the 2 gig internal memory really bothers!
thanks again for your attention
Its a great rom just a pity that libaudio is not working as normal
