default email app and exchange issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone has issues with the default email app (not the sense one) with exchange 2007 servers that have enforced security policy? When I setup email it mentions the security and I click yes, it never goes to the next step where I get asked to input a PIN of password.
It is alomst as if it gets stuck. If anyone knows of a fix or has the same issue that would be great to know. I've tried the email.apk with the security loophole but still get the same results.
Im getting desperate because I can't use CM roms. I'd rather not use touchdwn or K-9. I prefer to use the native android email app.

Search the forums for email.apk. someone came out with one you can push to system/apps or just install it.
works great and gets past security

I am having the same problem (running cm6.1). I have search for a fix and have installed nemerious different versions with no luck. Everytime I finish the manual set up it still says exchange requires security features your phone does not support... any suggestions? It seems kinda weird that the native vanilla email app doesn't support my exchange account but yet the sense email app does. Go figure.

This sounds like you are running 2.1??? 2.2 resolved Exchange PIN security issues. Ensure you are using a 4-digit PIN, numbers only just for a test.
Is anyone else in your enterprise experiencing this?
What do you mean by "it never goes to the next step where I get asked to input a PIN of password"? Can you please elaborate on what exactly happens?

I found the issue, if you go the OWA, there si a section for devices. I cleaned that up and tried the setup again. Everything worked fine afterwards.

yahoo mail
just a heads up, anyone having yahoo mail issues on the evo, yahoo changed some security in their servers so it won't be syncing right, or at all. You need to download the YahooMail app in the market!

HELP: Exchange Company Address Book Lookup

Hi all,
I am trying out a Desire this weekend, in general like it. I have got the Exchange sync to work for mail, cal & contacts however if I try to access the Company Directory (GAL) or Search the Inbox I get nothing returned.
I downloaded TouchDown to test and this works fine. But I dont want to use a 3rd Party tool for email (or I could have got a Nexus).
Has anybody else seen this error before, or have any idea's? Other wise its mail if back Monday.
Thank for your help.
Peter
Nobody can help
So HTC say, remove the sync and re-create. Does nothing.
Company IT say there are no more settings to change.
Am I the only person that has seen this, I found one other when searching web, but nobody replied.....
As an alternative would look at a GAL address book viewer?
Any help would be great, newbie with the phone and forum.
Whats your Exchange Version? For me with Echange 2010 it works fine.

The OWA server and Exchange Server is 2007. Did you have issues in the past?
I have the same issue only with Exchange 2003 (we'll be moving to 2007 soon). Was chuffed to finally get my email working today (firewall and all that) and have realised I can't browse the GAL. Might try Touchdown (although I had installed it before - will it let me use it as a Trial again???)...

I and a colleague of mine have the same problem with Exchange 2003 SP2. GAL search works fine on other phones (i.e. the iPhone).
I've seen people report that it works for them though, so I have no clue what's wrong, but I have an open ticket with HTC on the issue.
Well l'm using touchdown at the moment and it appears to work really well. Everything I could want from a client. Need to see if it is worth $20 though before taking the plunge. HTC Mail is a bit limited in comparison. although the OP doesn't want to buy a third party app I would say that is one of the points of Android that if the stock app doesn't work you can get hold of an app that does...

Thanks for the feedback, I also opened a ticket. Seems like very few people have reported this as and issue they either get all or nothing syncing.

I tried Touchdown, the issuethat I have is that the calander is then not combined which I really do like as a feature, and as far as I can see I cant just use it for email and get it to link to the standard apps I have to use it for contacts and Cal as well.
Same for me. I am syncing mails, calendar and contacts without any problems. Only company directory does not work.
I think it is not a connection problem. It is always telling me that nobody could be found. That is even happening when network connections are disabled. So it seems if this tool does not even try to connect.
Thats interesting, I did not try turning off the comm's, so at least it points to a software issue then. More hope HTC might fix it.
I think there may be an issue with contacts lookup via GAL/ Exchange 2003 on HTC STOCK Mail app. nothing shows up.

I had the same problem running Exchange 2003
GAL becomes inaccessible if security profiles are enabled ("Enforce password on device", etc..) and "Allow access to devices that do not fully support password settings" is disabled.
A bad workaround is to enable "Allow access to devices that do not fully support password settings", but that may prevent you from remotely wiping some devices and prevent some devices from initializing security profiles.
A better workaround is to add your account to the exceptions list. Doing that will enable access to GAL but disable the exchange lock screen.
I believe this is happening because either Android 2.1 or HTC mail application either doesn't support Exchange security profiles completely, or doesn't report them correctly.
Hi all, we have a product that might be of interest to you called GALSync Server. Unfortunately I can't post a URL but I'm sure you can find it with a bit of Googling.
It works by sync'ing a copy of the GAL into selected users' Exchange mailboxes which ActiveSync or BES then syncs in turn to the user's device. Works with iPhone or Windows Mobile.
We love it.
But we would wouldn't we.
Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the heads up, however its not what I am looking for:
1. You dont support Android from what I can tell.
2. I have to get the company to set it up.
I was hoping to either fix the HTC sync or an app on the handset that can get access.
Thanks
Agree with baronb. HTC needs to fix this issue. Corp IT Administrators will not make exceptions to their security settings. Also, I know from using Touchdown by Nitrodesk that it does, and CAN work.

I talked with HTC hot desk who were not very helpful and seemed to have lost my previous information. They said I should wait for an update!
At this point I am starting to look at alternatives as the lack of GAL for me while on the road was an issue last week.
Is there any more info on this one? I am having this bug too and it is the only thing stopping me from recommending the Desire as a suitable phone for my company to use for all staff right now!
Nothing, yet will bug Hotdesk again this week. The more people to log the error maybe the faster they will fix it.....+44 8458900079

[Q] Exchange Activesync constantly syncing when set to 'Push' mail

Hi
Has anyone else encountered this issue, or know of a solution? I've searched and have found similar problems but nothing exactly like this.
I've just upgraded to Stock gingerbread using the RUU download.
I use Exchange Activesync to sync only my mail from Gmail. However, when set to 'Push' email it will go into a constant loop of syncing.
One thing I noticed, after deleting and re-setting up the account a number of times, is that it works fine until I delete emails. Once I delete, the non-stop syncing begins....
Apologies if this has been asked before-I searched, honest!
Many thanks in advance for any info.
Unbranded DHD on stock Gingerbread, Virgin, UK.
Do you use GMAIL or the htc mail app?
In the htc mail app, it is looping if you set the app to synchronize more than one day (3days beeing the default value)
With 1 day, it is working partially : many sync will end in error, but will succeed later.
definitively, htc isn't able to provide a stable solution for AES...
For my part, I still use the Froyo stock mail app, wich is working very well with hotmail, but unfortunately without html support. (you can easilly install it with the apk)

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this did not work for me.
Yes-I'm using the HTC Mail app.
I deleted the account and set it up again , reduced the syncing to one day as you suggested, but as soon as I delete any emails, it goes back into the continuous syncing loop.
Would I have to be rooted to install the Mail app from Froyo?
Thanks again!
I have same issue. If I setup Gmail as an exchange activesync with m.google.com it continuously syncs and sometimes authentication error, then it works fine again.
With other exchange accounts it is fine.
I prefer the Mail app over Gmail app as I prefer not to have conversation view and it will view.docx word files.

Yes-I prefer the Mail app. Nice clean UI. Always used to work well for me with Froyo. Giving Moxier a trial right now, Seems to work fine but a bit pricey.
Same boat here.
Prefer the HTC mail app but getting sick of the constant syncing.
I'm using a custom Rom, could that be the problem?

No, you can install it on unrooted phones.
BTW you are able to uninstall it like all apps later...
You'll find below the version I'm using.
If anyone has the stock 2.3 mail app, and that it is better, well I wouldn't say no...

I don't think having a custom rom is the culprit as I've got HTC Stock Rom on a debranded but unrooted DHD, and I've got the same issue.
By the way, as I said earlier, I have been trying out Moxier mail and it does not seem to have this syncing problem....BUT-it's a bit expensive and overkill for my needs really.

I have the same problem on a unbranded DHD after the Gingerbread update.
Has anyone sorted out a fix for this?
Does installing the 2.2 mail app solve the problem?

After a lot of messing about I firstly discovered that after a short while using Moxier Male, the problem returned. However Touchdown works perfectly. Unfotunately this is a rather pricey cure for the problem. I think the reason Touchdown works for Push mail is something to do with the fact that there is an option in the Touchdown settings, to only delete emails from the phone rather than the server. Having this ticked I have had no problems at all with the constant syncing issue. As for why this should make a difference...I'm afraid someone with more technical knowledge would have to try and answer that!
I'm having the same problem with this. Anybody find a solution? Not keen on the gmail app.
GB has proven to be a flakey update for me. Lots of stuff worse than Froyo (for me).
Has anyone found a fix for this yet?
I have a HTC Desire (not desire HD) and have just changed to a gingerbread rom and now have the constant sync problem with push mail. I did not have this when i was using froyo...
same problem
Same here with DHD on 2.3.3 (stock). No fix yet, I assume...

why install the 2.2 htc mail app then and use it if it doesnt solve the problem (resending the deleted items and push issues) ??
i restored a froyo build of one of the roms i use and mail htc mail was working flawlessly (imap/pop3 and hotmail activesync).
the problem seems to be in gingerbread.
anyway to get over this? ideas ?
thx.
It seems you don't understand me :
-Installing the Android mail stock app doesn't solve the problem in HTC MAIL. (of course)
But it allows you to use a mail app that does work correctly with hotmail AES. (we don't want imap/pop, do we?). I don't have any push issue with Android stock mail. It works perfectly. My only concern is that there's no html rendering.
Touchdown is able to push mail with Hotmail AES and provide html rendering, but the app is expensive, I personnaly find the interface heavy, and it only supports one AES account at the same time (I have 3).
- I had the same exact issues on Froyo. And this is why I was already using the Android stock mail app.
Well I don't know what ROM/s you were using on Froyo that had constant syncing problems with the stock HTC email app. I've never had any problems on Froyo whilst running Leedroid, ARHD or Coredroid.
The only time I have ever encountered or even heard of this problem was on Gingerbread.
I've just gone back to Leedroid 2.2.3 Froyo & this problem doesn't exist on that ROM.
I don't see any benefit to using Gingerbread on the DHD (without Sense 3), it seems like HTC have gone backwards to be fair...
I was using the native htc Froyo ROM.
Sync was looping on first message when using push in Hotmail (no pb with other accounts, and no pb with pop/imap). As I've seen in XDA, I was far from beeing the only one to have this issue... You can find many threads in this forum.
Anyway, I'm quite happy with google stock mail app, so I no more use the htc's one.
Ah that must be why I've never come across it on Froyo, as I use Gmail & not Hotmail.
Do remember hearing of some people having problems with Hotmail on Froyo but never with Gmail. Think the Gmail problems are limited to Gingerbread.

Help with MIUI and email notifications.

Hopefully there is someone familiar with this ROM that can help me with this problem I am having. My Gmail account seems fine but with my MSN/HOTMAIL account I am having a bit of an issue. For some reason my phone keeps downloading old emails and sending me notifications. I have never had this happen before with any other ROM or any stock version of Android. I delete the notifications/emails on the phone but not on the server like I always do but the phone randomly downloads the same emails that are up to 2-3 weeks old.
Anyone have this same issue or know of a way I might be able to fix it? I was going to ask in the MIUI ROM thread but I am a new user and am not allowed to post in that section yet. Plus I am not certain it is an issue with the ROM.
Oh, I have a pretty up to date version of the rom as of about 3 weeks ago.
Thanks
Hm, have you tried deleting then re-adding the accounts you're having problems with?
Good idea. I will try that and see what happens over the next day or so. Thanks
No problem, hopefully that will work and if not, feel free to post again and we'll try to get it sorted out. I've never had that issue but maybe someone else has?
Okay, as if I didn't feel dumb before. I looked and looked and I can't figure out how to delete my MSN/Hotmail account. The only account that shows up in the accounts/sync settings is my gmail account. Any ideas?
Thanks
Sounds like it isnt deleting from server. Delete it from the website and Im sure you wont run into the issue
I don't want them to be deleted from the server and have never had this issue until using MIUI.
Go in to the email app. I have more than one account, so by default it will show my "combined inbox". You can also go to menu>accounts to show your accounts. Long press the account and select "remove account".

[Q] Active Exchange

Anyone else having issues with setting up an Exchange account on the One? I have no problem setting it up on my Nexus 7, S4 or on a Sprint HTC One, however when I try to set it up on the Verizon variant it doesn't want to set it up. I am currently using Touchdown during the 30 day trial, but I don't want two email programs and in the past my Sprint HTC One had no issues while setting up my work email (even removed the account and re-added it to test whether there was a recent policy change with work's servers).
Any thoughts or help?
Mine works fine. I did think that there was a problem at first because the message about needing to setup additional security did not appear until after I gave up and closed the app. I saw the message, closed it, tried to setup Exchange, and all was fine.

Yeah I'm not even getting that far. I get all the way to the end of setting up my account and then it hangs for about 1-2 minutes and then I get the error message about not being able to set up the account and to try later. I had the ONE previously so I know HTC handles my work exchange, and like I said in OP, I've tested setting up my account on other devices. Just bummed that I've had more issues with my ONE on Verizon than I ever had with Sprint.

Is it possible to bypass pin/security code in email app on stock rom?

Hi,
I'm trying to bypass the required pin/security code that my company's microsoft exchange email requires on a stock rom.
I installed the exchangen-no-pin hacked app that everyone uses on an AOSP rom, no problems.
But since I have decided that AOSP roms leave me with at least 1/3 less battery life than stock, I want to go back to stock. But I can't seem to get around the pin/security code policy b/c the hacked email apk doesn't work.
Anyone have any ideas?

Bypassing corporate security policies sounds like a good idea.
Use an email client such as Nine. That will allow you to satisfy the exchange server with an email app pin lock and wipe, instead of a device level admin lock and wipe.
Sent from my SGP512 using Tapatalk
Mailwise is another (free) email client that allows bypass exchange security if you enter a code you have to fetch from their website one time.
Although Nine is probably a better alternative because it does have the app level pin & wipe function rather than completely bypassing exchange security.
I can recommend NINE, it works great and their support is also pretty good, I received a reply almost instantly when I reported a minor bug and it was fixed within a day.
on stock, i don't think so. it is governed by the administrators of your email account. is it an exchange account?
