A few questions before buying - Defy General

I'm about to pull the trigger on the Defy but have a couple of questions
1/ As it only has 800mhz processor will it support Flash 10.1 if froyo is released for it?
2/ Which video codecs does it support?
3/ Does Rockplayer work?
4/ How much memory is available for apps?
Thanks

1. Yes, Motorola has officially gave Q2 2011 for Android 2.2 release. Don't let the 800mhz CPU damp your appetite for this handset.
4. 2GB plus it is shipped with a 2GB microSD card as well. I'm waiting for my 16GB microSD anyway.
Sorry I didn't have a definite answer for your other questions. However, regarding codec I would highly recommend using VPlayer Alpha (free). It plays most but not all codecs and formats but more than anything else that I have tried so far.

its not the speed of the processor its the type, and the defy has the right type
Don't know

1.2gb storage available for apps

Thanks guys....just bought one from amazon.co.uk @ £260

For what it's worth (since you already pulled the trigger) I was able to play a SharkTaleHD trailer selecting software decoding without issue on RockPlayer.

SD card reading speeds

Hi to everyone!
So, does anyone know or at least make a guess, if the Rhodium will still require things like SD TuneUp for decent read speeds, video watching etc?
GSM arena tested the TD2 with Coreplayer. It seems like it can play Xvid videos without any dropped frames. So it looks like its better than the HD. So maybe you won't beed the SD Tuner. This is only wild guess tho.
Since TD2 shares the same CPU as TP2, I guess it will be the same.

Nope, the HD uses a newer CPU because of an USA patent, something was taken out of the original CPU (the one in TD2 and TP2). So that HD can be sold in the USA. Somehow HTC got around the patent issue (or not) and now they use are using the older CPU (better) on the newer phones.
I hope I make sense. This is what I have read on the internet in many forums.
Ok, but I'm not interrested in the CPU. As I stated in the thread title, I want to know if SD reading speeds will finally be acceptable. Its a matter of proper drivers, not CPU. In other words, will we still have to install third party drivers like SD TuneUp

New Archos Gen 9 tablet ICS+1.5GHZ+1Go Ram

ICS
1.5 ghz (omap 4460)
1 go de ram
http://www.jbmm.fr/?p=26999
is there any benefit to have 1gb ram? I can't think of anything I could possibly do to use that much ram on my tablet. does it increase overall stability or anything?
1gb really?
...are you *positive* about 1gb ram? The ARCHOS website doesn't mention it like that and from what I hear the new ones too have "only" 512mb.

if cajl says it it's probably true. besides it makes sense. all manufacturers are gonna jump on the bandwagon and make all devices with 1gb+ ram
for the 1go YES it is true - mail from Archos -
the benefit...what benefit. Perhaps a little more....

I think it's not much difference.....Into Nexus S with 512Mb RAM and only 1GHz ICS run very well almost as fluently as Motorola RAZR 1Gb RAM and with dual-core 1.2GHz
Problem is slightly different if we refer to games !
Yes for the game
Not 1gb RAM in A80
Have just received a brand new 1.5Ghz Archos 80 G9 ref 502036 expecting 1gb RAM: system info app confirms 1.5 Ghz but only 466Mb RAM (i.e. 512Mb model).
where have you buy this model ?
Hi cajl I bought it in the UK: couldn't get it anywhere until last Friday when I got a stock notification email: now quite a few suppliers are offering it again.
Some suppliers are advertising it as 1gb but Archos on their web store do not specifiy the RAM (all with the same model number).
I have contacted Archos but honestly, the guys there do not have a clue! They have escalated my query this time however, which is, "is there a 502036 available with 1gb RAM, because my model only has 512mb".
One of the suppliers advertising it as 1gb is also following up the query for me with Archos. All they can say is that Archos notified them the new stock would be 1gb RAM but their item looks identical to mine in every way (and to the one on the Archos web-site - all the same model number of course too).
Very surprised that even with part number, model number, product ID and everything, Archos could not tell me what my RAM was: I had to download an app to find out myself.
They also insisted that unless Ice cream sandwich was pre-installed, it was not 1.5Ghz: but mine definitely is, even though it still only has Android 3.2!

I have a 501840,
Came preinstalled with honeycomb and showed only 512 RAM until I updated to ICS where it shows 1GB.
One user from this forum just had de same problem...do the update to ics and it should say 1GB...it due kernel limitations in honeycomb...
this did the trick for the guy i+m talking about...i hope

yes .. the update on ICS increase the RAM !!!!
Archos, it's a kind of magic !!!
magic indeed! Even as I read this thread, updates appear to have downloaded - but still I have 466 MB ram. Let me see if a reboot will activate the magic for me!
Is it the honeycomb update or the ice cream sandwich one?
For me, I could not update to ice cream sandwich with the tablet updater. I had to manually download the update here:
http://update.archos.com/9/gen9/gen9_4.0.4/firmware_archos_it4.aos
Download this file, connect the tablet to your computer, copy this file over onto the tablet, the tablet should ask you if you want to install the update (if it doesn't, find and select the file in the file browser on the tablet) then let it update.
Once you have Ice Cream Sandwich running you should have your 1gb of RAM.
Unbelievable: magic indeed! Tablet has auto updated (once I realised I had to request the install) from honeycomb to ICS and now has full 1gb ram (well, 'max 892Mb anyhow')!
Why o why can't Archos put this basic information on their web-site instead of just staying absolutely silent about the RAM? Only you guys, especially calj, not even Archos customer service or tech support (not at the customer interface level anyhow) have any idea what is going on! I guess the update would have happened anyway, but some of us like to know what is going on and to be sure we have got the right product.
Thanks again to all who have correctly informed me here.
Does this also apply to the 1.2GHz Turbo models? When I updated to ICS, it didn't show the 1GB of RAM, but I'm hopeful if I downgrade to Honeycomb, then upgrade to ICS that it might "unlock" it.

No, it doesn't apply to 1.2, Archos added memory very recently and it's only available on what they called ICS models.
It's not the fimrware installation that unlocks it, it's because ICS kernel is the only one that can handle it. So downgrading/upgrading won't work, and downgrading is not possible anyway.
Got my g9 101 ICS 1.5ghz 1gb few days ago. Seems like hdmi-out is completely broken for me. Tried with the official 4.04 and the test firmware no change. Have also tried keeping hdmi connected when booting the device and still nothing. Is everyone with g9 101 ics having this same issue?

Xperia S performance

Hey guys! I want to buy Xperia S. I like specs, but I have few questions about hardware.
Its dual core processor, is it powerful enough? Is Xperia S UI smooth on latest Sony's firmware and latest Cyanogenmod? Is complete operating system smooth on both? Do you have any issues?
Its GPU - Adreno 225, is it powerful enough? Are you able to run latest games smoothly, without hiccups?
Is phone big? Am I able to use it like daily phone in my school and so?
Are you able to play 1080p 9GB MKV files smoothly?
Please do not answer like fanboys, tell me the truth.

IMO my stock Xperia S is not especially smooth. It lags scrolling on the home screen, the camera 'quick-launch' takes forever, apps like messaging and contacts take a frustrating number of seconds to open. I tried out an Xperia T in store the other day and it was just generally smoother - Galaxy S3 and HTC One X seem in a different world. I'm sure the S is great on CM9 and CM10 but I've got a locked bootloader so can't install those. If you want the smoothest stock phone, look at the Nexus 4 or Galaxy S3 at the moment.
It's not terrible, and it'll do the job just fine, but if you want buttery smooth I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

Yeah, well I have Xperia Miro now (official ICS, 800 Mhz single core), it lags but does the job. And when I tried HTC phone in store (ICS, 600 Mhz) it was like very smooth, really slow processor but smoother than mine. So I am not satisfied with Sony's software at all.
But I tried Xperia P in store and it seemed smooth. Also do you have touchscreen issues like I have on Miro?
But considering Miro is low end, I thought Xperia S is way smoother.
Anybody else, cyanogenmod?
all lags its because a lot of blotware is preinstalled on phone...
i have stock .55 rom with RooT (locked BL), via TB deleted unused system apps and LOW of blotware ( TB backup have 220MB) and phone runs really smoth... + another launcher (im using apex), and its best of...
Well yes. But can somebody answer me other questions please?
About playing 1080p MKV movies : Yes, but you will face with a big problem that any file which has over 4Gb can not be transfered to the phone.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
Go for ACRO S. It's little better than Xperia S in-case of battery back up. Rest is same. And some MKV files of 1080p may face trouble while syncing between sound and video.

latest cyanogenmod (cm10): very smooth. latest sony's fw: havent tried. my current rom (miui based on stock (kinda old version) sony's fw: smooth, with a little tweak (it's miui, so, appearance matters most ). havent got any issues on both rom. there are something that dont work in cm10, but it's ignorable
the gpu is adreno - 220, not 225. but the difference (afaik) only bit mhz, and support with dx9.3, which has nothing to do with android, so the performance wont be to far from xperia t. it can play games smoothly. what is the latest games anyway? my latest "big" games are wild blood and nfs: mw. dont have any hiccups in those two.
is phone big?: it's 4.3 inch. how big is your hand. the phone is fit nicely in my hand while i think htc one x (4.7) and gs3 (4.8) doesnt fit well, but it's just matter of preference and once you got to use to your phone (any phone) it'll feel nicely fit in your hand.
Am I able to use it like daily phone in my school and so?: well of course.. except you're in elementary school
Are you able to play 1080p 9GB MKV files smoothly?: havent tried 9 gB mkv. but i have tried with 5 gB mkv 1080p, i use ufd with otg, slap the hdmi cable to my hdtv, and playing it smoothly with mxplayer.

Actually, I go to high school
I think I will go for Xperia T because of better camera, GPU...And similar price ;D
One last question because T and S have same CPU - No CPU related bugs? Will I be able to run latest unofficial android updates smoothly for a very long time?
Do I really need Quad core for anything?
Thanks guys
I don't think anyone really needs quadcore realistically

The hardware is definitely powerful enough. In my daily usage it has never underperformed. Don't worry too much about benchmarks as they're really just a number. CM10 runs very, very smoothly. Games too.
The size of the phone is subjective! How big are your hands? It's quite bit bigger than an iPhone but slips easily into my pockets and the large screen makes it very easy to use. I wouldn't want it to be any bigger though. Try and get hold of one in a shop and see for yourself.
I can't comment on your video situation, but as others have said there are problems with files over 4GB.

I know that! That is due to FAT32 file system, it has to be NTFS to transfer larger than 4 GB. Are you able to format to NTFS? I don't want to watch 9GB MKV, I just want my phone be capable of doing it. Can you watch 3-4GB MKV smoothly?

Well, if u have the money and want better performance, go for T.and where do u live? Here in Indonesia T is more expensive, though the brand new xperia s is hard to find.
But if u want sexier phone, go for S..
Yes, as I stated I can even watch more than 4 gB 1080p. The codec (sound codec) matters though. If it's compatible with your video player,it'll play nicely, if not, it'll get out of sync. And if you root your phone, you can read ntfs (via flashdisk or even external harddisk), there is app for that, I use paragon ntfs/hs, and got no problem in any rom.

Can somebody put some ts (example) file on BSPlayer and put on Software decoding?

Will we see OpenGL ES 3.2?

Ok, so I just ordered a Mi Max 128GB/4GB for Black Friday (from geekbuying) and was wondering if this device can actually support OpenGL ES 3.2, and I am asking if it can support it hardware-wise cause I know it won't work on android <7.0, so anyone know?
Adreno 5xx series GPU's have full support for EGL 3.2 with Android extension along with Vulkan support. So it's expected that they will be supported in Android 7~7.1.
Edit: & Android 7.0.1 is definitely coming (probably early next year in stable update):

Thank you, that's what I was expecting as well but even on Qualcomm's site the specs of the 510 are not clearly stated, also good to know we will in fact get 7.0.1 (although I plan to stay away from MIUI).
This should mean we might even be able to get at least somewhat decent Wii&GC emulation on this device in the future which is pretty exciting for me since there are still a lot of games I bought and never got around to finishing or even playing.

Don't have to high hopes that Dolphine emulator will fly on Adreno 510, the driver's especially sheder compiler are far cry from anything good also hardware capabilities (EGLS 3.2, Testilation engine & Vulkan compatibility) don't count much without proper & good driver's support. On the current Android gaming scene A510 is wonderful but it won't shy with Dolphine (nothing will, best behaviour you will have with New Rogue series [Imagination Technology] but their is no any newer SoC for Android with it we will see how will MTK X30 behave 2Q next year).
Edit: By the way this whose a best deal for it when I searched wanting to buy a full prime one in the mean time I decided not to go with it & instead both a 3/32GB S650 version in land where I live. But search again me by you can find a better deal.

I did not say it would fly but it would have at least somewhat decent performance which for me means playable, especially since most of the games I want to play are for GC not Wii and are RPG games (except perhaps the Sonic Adventure games but I can play the DC version of those if the performance is too bad), the only few Wii games I would like to play would anyway not be practical (if possible at all) because they use the huge mess that the Wiimote is (mainly Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World).
Plus I have seen Snapdragon 808 with the 7.0 dev preview (OpenGL ES 3.2 supported) running Dolphin quite well and even with lower performance that would be enough for me.
Either way I would probably end up starting the games and not finishing them for a long time as I keep doing, start them while traveling and then too busy with College and stuff to finish them and then start an other game (like I did with 7th Dragon 3 on my 3DS, Tales of Eternia for PSP and countless others) but it would still be nice to know I at least have the possibility of playing those games on the go.
Well A518 can all A418 on S808 can & probably a little more in time when drivers support all capabilities along with games/emus. Then that is settled its enough for you & it is a pleasurable experience to play on such a large display.
Best regards.

Need help with my LGE LGLS990 "ALT Switch" Gaming console Project (G3 Boost Mobile)

Need help with my LGE LGLS990 "ALT Switch" Gaming console Project (G3 Boost Mobile)
Wasn't sure which G3 forum to put this in due to none being devoted to this specific one so please forgive me if this isn't the right place. Recently I was looking at the Nintendo Switch for some on the go gaming and noticed how difficult it was to find one in stock at any local retailers. Well after getting online and only finding overpriced, Switch Lites going for regular Switch MSRP and standard Switch prices running in the $500 range I decided maybe it would be possible to come up with a "ALT Switch". My requirements seem to be met by the G3, decent SOC, 32gb onboard storage, 3gb ram and a sub $30 dollar price. I plan on pairing this with a bluetooth controller, 64gb sd card and a OTG hub with hdmi and charging. So with the hardware sorted out I started testing various games out and almost everything works pretty well. My problem comes when I play Call of Duty Mobile. It of course runs in low graphics mode but that isn't too bad, the problem comes when it randomly crashes out of the game or lags real bad. I have a LG Rebel 4 with a Snapdragon 425 and 2gb of ram that handles the game on about the same level and is more stable. So I've narrowed down the problem to the outdated OS and trying to run the games in 2560x1440. I would like to drop the resolution down to 1080 but there's no option for that so I started looking for ways to do it. Seems it's possible with a couple programs but those all need ROOT access. So between that and the benefits of a newer version of android I decided to look into rooting and installing a custom rom. Long story short, I've had no luck. If anyone knows of a easy to follow guide to root, unlock the bootloader and install a newer version of android on this hardware I'd love to hear about it. I'll be doing a article and possibly a video on this project depending on how far I can get.
Hmmmmmm......
Okay... Since no one has any ideas does anyone know anybody on the forum who knows their stuff and would be trustworthy enough for me to send my G3 to and have it rooted at the very least? I really think the hardware on the G3 is plenty powerful enough to play anything out there at a good level of detail and good frame rates. I think lowering the screen resolution dropped to 720p or 1080 and change of the performance governor to non interactive mode would give close to top tier chipset performance without the price penalty.
