What apps have you bought? - Windows Phone 7 General

I'm curious to know what apps people have purchased (other than games). I bought one of the games unintentionally, it didn't prompt me for anything just bought it and charged my credit card associated with xbox live account.. scary.
Back on topic, so far I haven't seen anything compelling to buy on the marketplace, the coolest app I found was Shazam but it's free. I'm hoping to get some cool apps to download from the replies.

handyscan
I bought this http://handyscan.jdbp.mobi

I bought a false app. The app I intended to buy was a Timer and this app was labeled "Timer" by EKSoftware. But it is a stopwatch without any timer functions at all. This was the very first app I bought on the new WP7 market. There was no try it and it was stated no refunds. So be careful about what you buy. If it has no try it or refund feature, don't buy it.

- Pictures Lab ($1.99) - nice effects
- Birdy Bounce ($0.99)

Will it have an on-screen button to take a picture?
I have been toying around with the pictures lab, and like how it is a soft press on the HD7 button to zoom and whitebalance, then press again to take a picture, but that button is nuts and with a case on, you have to mash it, and causes pictures to be blurry.
Things I have bought/gotten:
Free:
Twitter
Facebook
Foursquare
(the essentials I guess)
Flixter
ICE Alert
textContact Light (allows you to SMS contact info)
WeatherChannel
Paid:
Pictures Lab
Harvest
Oregon Trail

I have only purchased games so far. All other useful apps that satisfy my needs are available for free, or through the LG Store.

[Q] old mom got a droid

so im a winmo expert and wont be switching to android til my hd2 dies.
but since my mom and sis are on vzw i told them to get the incredible since they were bugging for smartphones.
i already got them setup in terms of using sense and setting up accounts, got them advanced task killer and all that
any recommendation for good apps for basic use, not power users obviously.
then in terms of music is it as simple as drag and drop to the sd like with winmo?
and how about data tethering do i have to root the phone for her or is there a simple hack or app to do it for free instead of paying vzw
thanks guys

You can get doubletwist for MP3 and video playback and theres even a PC program that goes with it, kind of like iTunes, but probably better. You can drop music on your SD card as well.
other apps I recommend
Beautiful widgets
Handcent SMS
Pandora or Slacker Radio, etc.
Google Voice, they can go to google.com/voice and get a free account, you can get free visual voicemail or get another phone number or both
ah doubletwist that came on my hd2 i didnt realize it was a syncing app i might just use that as well, thanks
what videos work on android or do you need different players for codecs like divx and such
being a smart phone and android n00b and a lady hopwefully my list will appeal to your mom and sis
Just a short list of the easy-to-use apps I've really liked so far...
Where's My Droid, fun little app that, at its most basic, will allow you to txt your "lost" phone to turn up the vol to max so you can find it... this seems to happen to me a lot so it is invaluable to me.
Mobisle Notes, simple notes app... lets you make multiple lists, groceries, feelance, what have you... easy to use.
Google Sky Map, self explanatory, amazes my 'rents
Gesture Search, set it up on long-hold of search soft key and draw letters on screen for speedy searching of pics, apps, files, people, etc.
Good Morning, interesting alarm app that will wake you with a custom message, the weather, your choice of song
Some fun and easy to understand games:
Coloroid
Grid Droid
Alchemy
Bonsai Blast
Doodle Jump

PdaNet works fine for tethering.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
For tethering I'd recommend EasyTether from the Market. Cheaper than PDAnet and faster to boot. Just don't try playing WoW or Starcraft 2 on it.
Also, task killers kill batteries because of the way Android operates. Android is very efficient at managing resources. Heck, Froyo (the new version of the OS that is rolling out) disables 3rd party task killers.
If battery life is a concern, look into UltimateJuice or Sedio's 1700mah battery. I'm a moderate to heavy user and the combo of those two gets me through the day on a single charge.
Also, they might like the program Foxy Ring. It auto adjusts ringer volume based on ambient noise and a toggle for a "timed" silence mode.
Hope that helps!
apps on the market get around having to pay for vzw's fees for tethering? surprised thats allowed
had no idea task managers did that, so even if 10 things are running in the back they really aren't using power like on winmo?

As long as you're not using exorbitant amounts of data, it doesn't phase VZW or even come to their attention. So Facebooking and light to moderate YouTube streaming is peachy-keen.
Processes are kept in the background to launch faster and provide better QoS. Unless they are set to sync with the cloud on an interval, they actually aren't doing anything in the background. That's where UltimateJuice comes in with regulating sync and when the APN is on.
Now, if you have programs that came with the phone which you never use, but insist on loading into the background at boot, you can use a Startup Cleaner to nix those, but allow them to be reloaded if they actually are used.
Cheers!

Funny to see a list of apps that most of which I've never heard of. Other than Google Sky map and Doodle Jump. Shows the market is getting more diverse.
Just thought of a couple of apps they might like.
Movies: find movie theatre times, reviews, trailers, and manage Netflix queue.
eBuddy: universal chat client for MSN, aim, Facebook, etc.
Mood Agent: quick temp playlist generator based on mood or song.

What apps do you like and why?

I thought we'd get a thread going on cool / helpful apps available in the market or web.
Lets try to avoid only putting the name of the app. Tell us a little about the app. It doesn't have to be a story. Please provide a link to app found online only.
Games apps are welcomed.
Ex. NFL Mobile, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8469781&postcount=628 gives current stats and scores. <-----I don't have the app installed so I don't know why it's any better than one off the market. Feel free to tell me why.
I like Silent Toggle Widget cuz it allow me to go from volume on, silent, and vibrate, from my home screen and only takes 1 icon.
Handcent SMS allows me to avoid small MMS pics and slide shows which are in the default messenger.
I like the game Alchemy. You start off with 4 elements and combine them to create new ones. I think theres over 300 combinations but I've only come up with 40ish. It's addicting.
FeedR. Great RSS feeds app, also has excellent sync with Google Reader.
Touiteur. I feel this is the best Twitter app out there.
Fruit Ninja. Very very addictive. Awesome fun. Open Feint makes it better.. as I always strive to get higher scores against my friends.
Tapatalk Pro. The best Forum surfing app out there.
Mp3 music download- it let's me download all the songs I
Want to my g2 for free!

Google Voice - 2 numbers 1 phone?? What can be better.
Gameboid - Who doesnt love classics.
Handcent - Better than the default texting app imo.
Tech Buzz - it gives me my daily dose of android news
LED Light - Much more handy using the bright light from the led flash to look for stuff in the dark rather than the phone screen.

LauncherPro = 7 homescreens, silky smooth, Sense style pinch preview, drag to un-install.

[Q] What would be the best set of apps to install at first ?

Hi,
Coming from symbian/winmo phones, the S2 will be my first android phone, what would the best apps to install right away -input, launcher, navigation, etc. (I don't care about games, and I don't mind paying for my apps).
Thanks in advance for your help.
Pulse is the best news app.
Google Maps is the best nav app.
Launcher Pro is my favorite home replacement.
Google Goggles
Opera Mini
Callmeter NG (data count calls sms..)
Astro (file manager)
Barcode Scanner
Bit useless question to me, although understand that your asking for it, Ill try to give an impression what apps are needed for me and why
adfree: no more adds, even in paid games etc.
astro: mentioned before, best file manager
chrome to phone: send stuff from your chrome browser directly to your phone (note: works with both chrome and firefox!)
dropbox: send files directly from your pc to your phone
google maps: navigation etc etc

skype: not the best app, but hey, skype on your phone.
soundhound: best music recognition app (similar to shazam, but a bit better)
google talk: nice messenger app from google, will soon work with video calling

JetCarStunts: really addictive platformerish game
Modern Combat 2: nice fps
Speedx 3d: strange reflex game, highly addictive
I have some more stuff, but these are my recommendations!
Thanks tennis11, okorn and stitch !
I understand your point stitch, it is a little bit like if I was asking "what would be the qualities I should be looking in a GF ?" We are all different, and our choices in anything including what we install in our phones directly reflect who we are, what are our personal interests, etc.
Still, if I could avoid going through 3454 web sites and 234 threads to discover what's the best rss reader or nav app, I would be very happy
Therefore merci beaucoup for the time you spent answering me guys !
and on the top of it, you will see a fair share of complete android noobs (like me) who juste made the move because of THIS phone !

AudioPlayer
MIUI player (don't think that this is in the Market, but there is a link for it on this forum)

That was a nice collection. Allow me to add more.
In alphabetical order:
1Mobile Market: As great as the normal Android market, has some additions IMHO.
aMetro: Subway maps for various countries.
App Update Notifier: As the name says. You can also schedule updates check.
AppRemover: Best uninstaller out there.
BatteryCalibration: As the name says.
Cache Cleaner: As the name says.
Dual File Manager: Best file explorer IMHO (Root Explorer is great too if you want to access the system, but this one has a better interface).
FasterFix: A fix for applying fast GPS lock.
HD Wallpapers: As the name says.
JuiceDefender: Best battery saver out there, truly makes a difference.
Maxthon: An excellent browser indeed. As well as xScope.
MoboPlayer: Best flv videos player (Am not sure if SGS2 plays flv by default).
Mp3TaggerPro: Best tags editor for your music tracks.
MultiTasking Pro: Visual task switcher (Something like the good old task manager, back in WinMo days ).
PhoneUsage: Statistical reports for your usage (calls, SMS, and data).
Plume: The very best Twitter app out there.
PowerAMP: The very best music player out there.
SD Speed Increase: As the name says, makes a difference in reading/writing speeds.
Smart Keyboard: Best one IMHO, as well as SwiftKey.
Where's My Droid: Excellent one, if you lost your phone, just SMS it & it will ring.
NoLED is pretty handy - it shows a little sprite on your screen if you have a missed call or unread text etc, and uses very little power because of the SAMOLED+. A bit like the glowing trackball on the Nexus One.
can i download the apps on the pc and then install it on my phone?

I've just arrived at Android, having spent the last 18 months with the HTC HD2 and would like to try to find some similar apps to Winmo ones that I particularly miss (I don't miss the phone though...).
My wish list is for the best Android versions of;
Scilor's groovedownloader - absolutely superb free mp3 downloads
SPB Backup - saved my sanity on many occasions
iGo Primo - Great offline sat nav
That will do for now, if there are any suggestions out there.
I am loving this phone.

Windows Phone Most Wanted App List

Hey XDA,
Romit Metha (@theromit) started a Google doc that is keeping track of some of the most popular and big name mobile apps out there and whether or not they are available for WP7.
Here is a link to the list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Atl58J-8ikdwdHpVOTJzTjhGSHBTeVUyRlNjVHRsX0E&hl#gid=0
Do you want me to list them in this post too? Or just refer to the link?
Tweet suggestions to him (@theromit) or post them below and I'll pass the message on to him to update the list accordingly.
What apps do you want to see on Windows Phone 7 that are available on iOS, Android or BB?
I'm looking forward to a Wells Fargo application or Mint.com, as well as Nike+, and Instagram.
Sam
PS:
We are looking for suggestions for apps that are officially on iOS (iPhone) and Android (Smartphones not Tablets). Maybe a thread for the tablet versions of apps can be appropriate in the Windows 8 forum once it launches later this year. In the meantime lets focus on mobile!
Edit: To reduce duplication, here are all the apps so far.

P.S. LogMeIn is different from Hamachi. LogMeIn let's you remotely login (a sort of VNC client/server), Hamachi creates fast and easy peer 2 peer VPN (even behind firewall).
2) Jaxtr !!!!!!!!!! JAXTR !!!!!!!!
3) a proper Console/cmd for moving, rename files, ping and similar
4) torrent client
5) a java virtual machine (even an emulated one would be good enough)
6) ssh/ftp/http/php server (3 different apps)

+ 1 for teamviewer - that would be amazing.
Skype obviously. Also Aweditorium, Flipbook, dragon dictation, and most importantly a UK version of the Amazon app.

Flipboard would be amazing, both on Windows 8 and Windows Phone. I feel like it could translate nicely with the metro design language.
Keep the suggestions coming XDA! I'll work on updated the first post in this thread and keeping it clean and organizing it better. I'm also going to send our suggestions to Romit too.

So true. Flipbook looks and feels like it should have been an app designed specifically for metro. They both quote a 'celebration of typography'. It will really shine on a windows 8 tablet, but I could easily see it working on wp7 too. Fingers crossed.
Skype and a Port of the Android App "Quizoid" ( I have the Database with the Questions, so I can port it, but alone is not so easy ) ...
Opera browser with flash support.

Question Any app that truly shines on the Fold 4?

Everyone has their favorite apps and the fold 4 makes a few of them very much engaging and more useful obviously due to the amazing screen.
Are there any apps/ games/ activities that you think in particular have become more usable and indispensable on this device?
For eg. I really like using tradingview for analyzing stock charts. Really can use more indicators on the go.
Also, I love reading FLIPBOARD and amazon kindle app.
What are your app discoveries?
Spotify and Outlook do a good job of using the ZF4 like a mini tablet on the inner screen
Telegram, Gmail, MS Outlook/Teams and Office Apps, Lightroom, Canva, Chrome, GoogleDrive Apps, YouTube, Zoom Meetings...
Just this morning I had training in the office. At the end there was an assessment and to get the questions you needed to scan the QR code. This then took you to the training website and to the questions. Everyone was either squinting to read the questions, swiping from right to left to read or did their phones in landscape. No problem for the Fold, simply opened the inner screen and viola! Reading the questions was a breeze
What's the offset difference between Microsoft Outlook and Samsung Email? I've tried outlook but the ads annoy me, and I don't need the Microsoft suite of apps enough to subscribe to 365. Is there any stand out feature that Ive missed that could make me switch?

I've been using the outlook app without the MS365 suite and it doesn't have any ads.
Probably u can try adding dns.adguard.com to your private dns and it will block all ads on all aps.
Samsung email is a great app and i've been switching on and off to outlook but since last 2 years it has been my primary email app. It has improved a lot.
Also, if u have a hotmail or live.com email, u can directly create task from emails to MS todo ( another MS app I can't do without)

Agreed. Any app that has anything to do with reading makes a great use of F4.
Video media consumption is kind of ok because of the aspect ratio and usually it gives the black bar sandwiching the video content. But I guess a 16:9 phone would be a bit odd. But also beautiful.
Does anyone know how to play videos in YouTube a little bit zoomed in, but not fully (so It cuts off less of the video but uses more of the screen? )
Total Launcher is the best launcher and the best app for me
4 Screens: horizontal folded, vertical folded, horizontal unfolded, vertical unfolded and i can customize them all.
Samsung Notes: I've bought a s-pen and it suprised me how good that app is. Got it synced with my girlfriend and we write, import, manage everything in it.
I agree total launchers cool, and seems to work well with fold 4, ita Just alot of effort to set up each screen in my opinion. Any one know any other launchers that work well with dual screen set up?
Ironically, Apple Music.
We can now add Google Keep to this list (it's been a staple of mine due to its cross-platform support for a long time anyway). They've just added a two-pane mode which works on tablets AND it works unfolded in landscape mode on the ZF4.
Anyone else got any more app recommendations for our Fold 4??
The obvious one is DraStic, the DS emulator and Citra, the 3DS emulator. Like, it's just asking for it.
I'd also say that Infinite Painter really takes advantage of the extra screen space when unfolded.
Another great find, Win-X launcher now supports folded screen v21.4, now my fold 4 can look like a windows pc!
book reader apps, have read quite a bit of ebooks already
Does anyone have any other new recommendations for apps??
