[Q] Desire Z updates - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got prompted on my Desire Z this morning that there were two plug-ins and one widget available. LinkedIn and Picasa were the plug-ins and I can't remember what the widget was. Anyway, i tried to download the Picasa plug-in and it started and finished but that was all it did. Didn't install, doesn't show up in the gallery (even after a reboot) and i can't figure out how to get back to the plug-in section in the HTC hub to try again....any ideas? or did HTC pull the update only to bring it back at a later date?
Any thoughts would be good.

I had the same issue but downloaded linkedin. It is not in my app drawer, cannot open it but it is in my manage apps. There is a thread in the HTC Desire HD section on this with a number of people reporting similar problems.

Those aren't apps, they're just account providers.
To use them go to Accounts & Sync and then add new accounts for them.
You'll see them in the photo gallery and in 'people' after you've added the accounts. They're similar to facebook and flickr which come preinstalled.

Thanks rewen, i hadn't thought of that. I went to check it out though and I don't have the account to flag on but the others are there as you said so i think i'm in the right place but just that it didn't install.
So back to where i started, not being able to get back to the plug-in section to re-download.

No matter how many times I try and install the Picasa plugin it does nothing. Also not in the accounts.

I am in the same boat.. I flashed a different rom and want to install those. Not sure where to find those in the htc hub. Just waiting for it to let me know that there are new plugins i guess. I wonder if you can find them on htcsense.com

Did you check the bottom pane in the gallery?

yep, not there. Even did a factory reset like some have suggested.

When I click on install it says "Your item will be downloaded". I don't actually see it download though.... Do you need to be on wifi or something...?

I'm not sure. It will be in the notification bar if it fails though. I've had them fail on me.
Regarding my own mini issue, I just got one of the two to download now.. I wasn't signed into htc hub apparently. Once I signed in it let me know of new plugins, however, when I downloaded linkedin it took me away from the page to get picasa as well. Ugh. Bad design...

I wasn't signed in either but I know I was at one time... I tried to install Picasa first based on you not getting back. It showed in the notification as downloading but now it's nowhere to be found... Not in the gallery, not in accounts... idunno, it's broken.

I don't recall seeing a download status. Just a success or failure. So I guess that means you should at least see a message of success... :-/

Hey guys, FWIW I got my 5th HTC Hub update notification for the Picasa plugin today. It installed it for the 5th time and actually worked this time. Have no idea what is different but it just worked.

I had never gotten any notification regarding the Picasa plugin.
After reading this thread I went to the HTC Hub app, went to settings -> sync, and my sync option wasn't checked for HTC Hub. After enabling it, I got a bunch of new widgets/plugins notifications. I downloaded the Picasa plugin and it showed up in Gallery right away.
Awesome!

Facebook for HTC sense not updating

Im having an issue with Facebook sense. I noticed after restarting my phone for the first time that the Facebook friend stream was no longer updating even though it was set to update every hour and it was enabled, Looking in the setting menu confirmed this as the last updated time was not changing unless i forced a resync. Removing and re-adding the account worked for a while until I restarted the phone but as soon as I did the same issue manifested, it just wont automatically update. All other automatic updates seem to work.
Has anyone else encountered this issue and if so have you managed to find a resolution?
Cheers!
if you have the little power bar widget, with Bluetooth WiFi etc on, have you turned on the reloading sign?

Already checked that, every other app updates correctly just not facebook
log out then back in...it fixed my friends list not updating with new friends, probably will sort out th e friendstream (providing you've not already fixed it)
make sure its the facebook for htc rather than facebook for android tho !
How are you logging out of it?

I don't have my phone with me at the moment, but while logged into Facebook, is there no option to log out via the browser or when you press the Menu button?
I had that problem, fixed by going into settings and re-selecting the update frequency, seems to need repeating at each boot.
Does anyone know how to update contact pictures? My friends have updated their facebook prof pics but it isnt getting update to my phone.
i had to delete my facebook account then re-add it
Facebook integration seems a bit iffy on mine too. New friend facebook contacts do not show up on Contacts tab (to be linked). It seems the thing does not update without remove-re add.

Yeah I had to remove the account and re-add but then it only synced 30 contacts at first and then I had to keep resyncing 3 times to get all contacts synced.
Same here.....had to re-add my account
The first time it cut off at around 40. I rebooted the Desire, now I have the first 40 twice.

Solution
Had the same issue, just updated facebook and all better now...
not to beat a dead horse on this one, but I am having something along these issues with my FriendStream widget. The Facbook isn't updateing hourly like it should, I have tried the following to correct the problem:
Removed/Re-Added my account
Cleared all Cache Data
Cleared all Data
Reset the phone (factory Reset)
Updated Facebook
Really ata loss for what I should do from here, any ideas or suggestions would be awesome.

[Q] com.htc.socialnetwork.facebook force close when listing facebook contacts

I'm getting this really annoying problem for the last few days after a rom update. Whenever I access the Facebook directory in People (online directories tab), a message popup:
The application Facebook for HTC sense (process com.htc.socialnetwork.facebook) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close.
I've tried everything below but nothing works:
1. Remove Facebook account and add it again
2. Clear data and cache of the app
3. Try flashing another ROM
4. Unroot to original ROM
I think the problem is with my Facebook friend list but I can't figure it out. Has anyone experience the same problem as mine? I have around 400 friends in Facebook.
Update1: If I choose "View" in the Menu, the number of Facebook contacts is correct. Some of the facebook contact have been synched with photo, but still I cannot access the Facebook contact list.
No reply. I guess I'm on my own to solve this.
I did a google search and this came up I am having the same problem did you find a solution?
I am in. Just notice this problem too
I found removing the fb for android (?), and doing a full sync and link contacts help.
Really sure for the linking contacts step. Since i notice that fc happens everytime i use it to those with multiple contact (same phone, mail, etc) but not yet linked.
Occassionally, my phone will say something like find multiple contact bla bla bla. I just choose link em all. Now i rarely get fc

My problem is similar... HTC Evo 4G (original EVO), (being an admitted NOOB to the android arena), I rooted my phone... then had to unroot, and return to Sprint after falling out of the car window, and being run over by my back tire, (damned dogs, jumping up, happy to see me!). Sprint's techs said that if I didn't have the triple layer Seidio Extended case on it, it would have crushed the phone completely). As it was, my screen was broken, and I had to have the phone un-rooted to get the service.
Got the phone back ($37 for the repairs, Thanks Sprint!), and re-rooted her, and back in business... everything worked... until I couldn't find the root manager, I had used last time, so started using Root Explorer. I bit more advanced, and less noob friendly, if you ask me... as I was deleting bloatware, I deleted both Facebook AND Facebook for htc sense... I got the sense ver. back, and synce with my contacts by setting up the account again... only thing is, I can't upload pics. I could before, just can't now.
Only thing different I can recall doing this time, over last, was getting rid of Friend stream and a few other things I didn't last time (football, nascar, for example). Admittedly, I deleted things that didn't look like they belonged with any apps I was keeping. So, who out there knows what files may be associated with uploading photos to FB, via htc sense? I have the actual app, as old as it may be... was this one ever updated from 2010? I'm not looking forward to re-flashing the phone, just to restore one issue... but I will if I have to.
Thanks, in advance!

HTC News not working anymore

Hi guys, I'm having DHD for some weeks now, and so far everything is good (except the battery, but with this display it's understandable).
Two days ago the News app stopped syncing. When I click on sync, the icon flashes but no actual sync is made (I can see from the desktop google reader feeds). So I removed app data (from settings -> applications -> manage applications -> running).
Now the News app does not want to start at all. It flashes the screen and then it closes by itself. What can I do to restore the app and make it working again? (I mean without hard reset). I is not in the list of installed apps, can I find it from somewhere and reinstall it?

Had exactly the same problem. I gave up on it and switched to RSSDemon - very good app....
See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834323 fixed by doing factory reset.
I had the same problem...did a hrad re-set last week...getting the same problem this week again! it says updating but doesn't update..I don't want to do a hard reset again..I think HTC should do something about this...i thought moving from a Nokia to HTC I would forget about hard reset...but not so!
So it turns out that this News app is quite buggy It's good that there are some nice alternatives in the Market.

Yeah -- the HTC news app and widget is horribly broken even with the Desire Z -- I tried clearing the user data and now it won't even prompt to add new feeds -- it just sits there with a blank window.
I disabled the sync for it, and now I'm using another news reader.
I also got this today.
Bahh, I'm not going to hard-reset....
Hmm, I now remeber, I downloaded, I think from xda, a zip with all the apk apps from the original rom... going to see if I can find it and install it...
Let us know if the news app is there.

I've search the news apk from the zip that I have, but I can't find it. At least there's no apk with the name "news" on it.
Could it be "EReader" ??
No idea what happened but mine started working as well…

I wasn't able to get my feeds updated, and I couldn't even manage the feeds in the app, getting messages as "unable to unsubscribe" and "unable to change folder". Clearing the cache didn't work, so I cleared the data and ended up with exactly the same issue on my Desire Z as you describe.
I used OSMonitor to check the logs for the app and only then did it dawn on me that it syncs with Google Reader. Apparently, the current blank screen issue is caused by incorrect communication between Google Reader and the HTC News app:

Interestingly, disabling sync for News didn't help the situation and I'm wondering whether and how the HTC News app works without using a Google account.
Anyway, I logged into Google reader on my PC, marked everything up to a day ago as read. This again, did not change anything.
Just for the heck of it, I installed the Google Reader app (News sync still disabled), and gave it access to my account. Lo and behold, when I added the HTC News widget to my home screen, it showed me the proper list of subscriptions (from Google Reader) and it works as it should. Moreover, the HTC News app works again and shows me the right content!
In addition to the above, the widget indeed shows new items as the Google Reader sync is done (HTC News sync is still _disabled_). Now it's just a matter of waiting to see whether the widget not updating issues reoccur, but I'm guessing no
I really love htc news ,I think its got the best eye candy and function compared to all the market alternatives. But it has crashed twice and has fixed with 2nd hard reset. Does anyone know any way htc news can be reinstalled without having to hard reset!

Great discovery. Good thinking. Solved my problem. Do you know which one I sync, Google Reader or sync HTC News, to get the widget to refresh itself?
As an FYI this was fixed with the recent OTA update, or at least it was for me after the update.
I have also had this problem for a while now. Just oday I figured that HTC News wasnt conecting to Google Reader acount so I instaled NewsRob and linked it to my Google Reader account. Now HTC News seems to have reconnected to my Google Reader acount and is successfully updating. Gonna uninstall NewsRob as I like te HTC News app.
Alsp havent bothered updating to the latest OTA as I wanna keep my Eng Boot and full Root.

When reader and news are enabled at the same time, reader will overwrite modifications from news next time it syncs. At least I get a message notification about this when starting news app.
For me I disabled reader sync and just use the news widget & app.

Persistent sync icon after rooting

I recently rooted my evo and removed a few apps using titanium; I am running the stock firmware. The sync icon on the top won't go, earlier it used to show the sync icon occasionally, when I would refresh Gmail or it was synching itself, but now it's always there (which makes me think it's always synching perhaps). I am talking about the one shown in the image attached.
One, reboot, see if it's still there
2, go into Settings > Accounts and see what's syncing, if anything.
Did you remove the friendstream.apk?
@HipKat
1) Yes, it is still there after however many reboots.
2) Nothing is synching. Sometimes it is, but the icon is present even when nothing is.

Thats your issue.
If I remember right (its been half a year since I ran Sense) you have to remove the friendstream.apk before you set up any accounts to sync.
I think I read once that that apk had a lot more to do with the phone than just showing your social streams. I'm pretty sure it's not one of the stock apps you can remove

Ok, after reading the entry in that thread it seems it has to do with the fact that I am using Facebook for HTC sense app, since I have facebook completely removed from my phone but do need the contacts synched from FB. Anything that allows me just to have the FB contacts? I don't need anything else from FB actually.
And will removing the FB from HTC sense solve the problem. or if anyone has the apk for friendstream, i can just insert it back perhaps?

If you turn off the "sync live feed" option for the facebook sync it should stop.
Yup. Matty is correct. Either uncheck the 'sync live feed', or just leave the facebook and friendstream apps alone. They can cause weird issues when removed (as you're currently experiencing). As matty said, there is a proper 'procedure' to removing them, but I don't know what it is at the moment (running AOSP for a while now)
I don't have the "Facebook" application at all. The application I am referring to is "Facebook for HTC Sense". This app actually does not have the "Sync live feed" option. The only option it has is "Sync Contacts" which I disabled, then waited for some time, and rebooted the phone. Still the same.

Hmm, odd. I could've absolutely sworn that the 'sync live feed' was one of the settings in there. I must be losing my mind, I'm half tempted to flash a sense rom right now just to check, haha. Yea, either reinstall friendstream or just restore a nandroid backup, and leave the fb for htc sense app and friendstream apps alone.

There you go.
Firstly, as has been pointed out already, I confirmed and it is indeed an issue with the "Facebook for HTC Sense" app. Simply removing the account from the application gets rid of the icon.
@mattykinsx
Thanks. I have put the file in /system/app, removed the account from "Facebook for HTC Sense", rebooted the phone and added the account again. I'll soon find out if this works, otherwise, nandroid backup it is.
@k2buckley
It isn't just you, I have the same impression for some reason. If I end up doing the nandroid backup we will soon find out.
EDIT:
I just restored the nandroid backup. Things should work as intended now and I'll just leave the friendstream.apk as it is. There is indeed a "Sync Live Feed" option in "Facebook for HTC Sense" now, which wasn't there before backup restoration. I guess it vanished due to the removal of friendstream.apk or something else.

[Q] Latest HTC Gallery update [CLOUD]

Hy,
anyone saw that the new gallery update brings "Browse your photos and videos in the cloud" functionality?
Now I sure dont see any option for this but at night I got a notification from Coud that "duplicates has been deleted"...
I dont know where I can find this features, but I sure dont want any photos/videos uploaded to cloud without my permission... So if anyone have any info on this, I would really appreciate it.
Best regards
X2
I have an htc one m7 that I just updated to the latest version, after a reboot it shows the same message "gallery cloud" duplicate... etc
It didnt ask for my permission, I have the htc sync disabled, cant seem to find the option to disable this POS. Not happy.
I just noticed this morning the same behavior. I am trying to find out where this service is coming from, why it is running without my permissions and why it is putting my personal information in the cloud somewhere and I don't know where or how to get it, shut it off, or change it. It has really pissed me off to no end. I am hoping someone has an idea.
Just came here looking for the same answer.
A bit of a **** move if HTC is uploading peoples pics without asking first!!
I've emailed HTC via the play store app and asked how do we turn this feature off. I'll post if I get an answer...
Chiming in. just saw this, not pleased. I'm thinking of disabling the app till a solution is found.
I might bin it too, don't want this feature using up my data allowance...I've got about 4000 pictures on my phone...
yea wtf
Same issue. my phone keeps giving me a Cloud Gallery notification every 10 minutes or so saying it deleted duplicate photos. What in the world HTC was thinking, we may never know. But they need to let us turn this off because I show it using my data. Not cool HTC.
To add to it, I open my gallery and its cycling through all of my photos. Constantly. I click a folder, then the 'highlights' starts fast-cycling through every single photo in the folder. Not like a preview as it used to (which was annoying). This needs to stop. As someone else mentioned, I also have thousands of photos on my phone and this is driving me nuts.

HTC Cloud Gallery does not upload any of your files to the cloud. It only indexes whatever you have on Dropbox, GDrive, FB, Flickr, only after you have agreed to link to those sites. If you see photos found by Cloud Gallery, those could be uploaded by Dropbox or GDrive automatically. You need to check their settings. Again, Cloud Gallery is a "read only" indexing service.
Started getting the same notification since the last few days -- and the worst part is that there doesn't seem to be a setting anywhere in the gallery app or in the system settings allowing to configure this "Cloud Sync" or turn it off all together.
And now I really don't know if my pictures got "synced" somewhere in someone's cloud Really annoying. Uninstalled the gallery app altogether with Titanium Backup root uninstall.

I have the same issue. Haven't found a solution yet but I wanted to let you know that freezing/uninstalling gallery will stop the cloud syncs but there are side affects.
I froze it and all seemed normal until I tried to set a contact image. Freezing gallery somehow disrupted the ability to link images to contacts. I tried it from within the contact app and through a third party gallery app and it wouldn't work either way. I had to defrost the HTC gallery in order to set the contact image.
There maybe other side affects but that was the only one that I ran into.
