So, does HSPA+ show up as a separate indicator? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The way you can distinguish between EDGE and HSPA. Is it it's own individual thing or does it just show up as fast HSPA? Basically, how do I know if I'm connected?

I actually ordered a G2 today. That's why I'm asking on the G2 board, asshole.

It depends on which ROM you're using.
On the stock G2 ROM, T-Mobile programmed it so you only either see E for EDGE or H for anything from UMTS to HSDPA to HSPA+.
If you install a Sense ROM, you'll see the correct indicator. I.e. an E for EDGE, 3G for UMTS/HSDPA, and an H for HSPA+.
I have no idea what Cyanogen will show you, as I haven't used CM on my G2, but I would imagine it'd be the same as the Sense ROMs.
Basically, T-Mobile wants you to believe you're *always* on HSPA+, but the non-carrier-backed ROMs tell the truth.

The Sense ROMs show 3G for UMTS, and H for HSPA(HSDPA)/HSPA+.

Does anyone know what CM does? It's all I use. Also, HSPA+ just automatically picks up, right? It's not like Sprint's horrible 4G where you have to turn on your 4G radio that sucks the life out of the battery in a matter of hours.

Correct. You *can* switch to EDGE-only if you wish (I do this at work cause I have WiFi and my cubicle is a black hole) but you don't need to do anything special to 'activate' HSPA+

HSPA+ is really just a faster HSDPA revision. Nothing special.
You should get the same H logo from as low as 1.2 Mbps HSDPA to at least 21 Mbps HSPA+ and probably more.
Also, technically, I think that 14.4 Mbps is still part of the HSDPA 3GPP release 5 revision. 21 Mbps is the newer release 7 HSPA+. So even if there were a "H+" sign, the Desire Z/G2 should never use it.

I can 100% say that CM shows G for GSM, or whatever the exact term is. E for edge, 3G for when you are in 3G and H for HSPA+. I've flashed several diffeernt roms and everyone I have flashed(other than stock) show the true data.

Sorry if this seems pedantic, but doesn't it show "H" for HSPA or HSPA+ ? Not just for HSPA+ ?

On my unlocked tmobile comet (Ideos) , when I insert my HSPA+ Sim in, it shows HSPA in the "about phone" info options in settings as network type, but only bars with no 3G/4G icon. (possibly because I am not connecting completely)
Looks like I need to have my provider update my device so it works, but in theory it should.

Double facepalm youself LMAO!! UMTS is 3G (7.2), HSPA is 4G (14.4), and HSPA+ is 4G (21.1) also. You are right though, wtf is an hspa+ sim? The sim I've had since the days of my RAZR works just fine.
In CM ROMs (and most others):
G = GSM/GPRS
E = EDGE
3G = 3G aka UMTS
H = HSPA/HSPA+ aka 4G

i'm sure cm9 will add support to show H+ should you indeed be in a HSPA+ capable area.
silly, google, they didn't show the HSPA icon on the nexus one and now they ignore the HSPA+ icon
to bad that HSPA+ isn't available at my place yet
I'm confused by you guys' posts. The G.Nex does tell you when its on 4(faux)G by displaying and H instead of simply "3G".
I hope the complain in this thread isn't because theres no "+" after the H.
note, there's HSPA and HSPA+. hence my post.
I live in the Dallas area and I have yet to see anything other than H on my Nexus and this is definitely a Tmobile FauxG area.

4G and 3G are not actually different for Tmobile.

So then, the question is how to turn off DC hspa. Which is probably not accessible through the maintenance menus.

I'm wondering if the OP came from Sprint? Sprint's 4G was a separate (battery sucking) radio that you could turn on and off and needed to in order to protect the battery usage.
4g on TMo isn't like LTE, it's not a separate modem to turn off like AT&T, VZW, or sprint. It's really a hopped up version of 3G. Your choices are 3G/4G or Edge.

On T-Mobile, there is no real differentiation between 3G and 4G. Both operate on the same spectrum. The only difference is the speeds. However, that is controlled, not by your phone, but by the tower you're connected to. It's easier to look at it as the same exact technology. For the purpose of this conversation, there is no more T-Mobile 3G. It's all 4G, or HSPA+, service now. The 3G brand has been retired in favor of the 4G moniker.
To put it all simply, 3G is the same as 4G on T-Mobile. To turn off 4G, you would drop down to 2G, or EDGE/GPRS, service.

And if you still want to do it.....go to settings - more settings - mobile networks - network mode and you can select "GSM only".
Strangely enough....there are a couple areas around where i live that my phone will show a 4G connection and absolutely refuses to open anything. I've found that if i switch to the "GSM only" option in those areas that at least i can get it working... slowly, but better than nothing.

[Q] LTE coverage on MIUI??

I have the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 android version 4.1.2 on MIUI.us 3.1.11. Everything is working fine, but I have noticed slightly slower speeds and I no longer see my LTE signal icon in the status bar? How can I tell if I still have LTE coverage? Is it still there, but just not being displayed anymore? Please advise.

An image doesn't change much, I could swap it to change 2G (E) and it would still give me the same speed.. You can use speedtest app to see if you still get the same speed.
So I shouldn't be to concerned if the LTE icon is no longer being displayed? It was very helpful to have it, let's you know where the best coverage for LTE is at! Wonder why it's not being displayed anymore after rooting??

I Would like to add, on TMO rom it seemed to me like they are marking H+ as 4G as well, which on normal roms (i9505) they are not.
i had 2 Galaxy S4 in my hand, one with TMO rom and one with i9505 rom. (With TMO sim in both)
the TMO showed up 4G and the i9505 showed H+
but when looking inside the debug menu, they both were in H+ channel,

so what i think is that TMO is "Cheating" by stating "i'm on 4G network" which should be only LTE,

Tmobile's 4g has always been hspa+ They are just starting to roll out LTE. AT&T did this also. They billed hspa+ as 4g, and then rolled out LTE later, which they currently market to compete with verizons 4g lte. Gsm carriers were able to debut hspa+ faster then verizon was able to debut LTE for the first time, giving them a leg up on the fastest network for a short time.
