Adding Rom's thru ROM Manager - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently got rid of my Epic for the EVO and was wondering about some things with ROM manager. I never really used it that much because all ROM's on the Epic were basically all suppose to be done by going straight to CW. I understand everything in general but my question is basically can I have a ROM like MikFroyo 4.4 installed on the phone and use ROM manager to download and install something like MYN's Rom without having to "return to stock"? Or is it best to return to stock before adding a different ROM/Kernel? I backed up my original stock ROM but was just curious since I want to try a bunch of ROM's. I know I really like the MikFroyo ROM but I usually can only last about 1 or 2 weeks with the same ROM before I need to flash something, LOL. Which is why I got rid of the Epic because the DEV community was very slim compared to the EVO's. Thanks in advance.

I've used ROM manager but I prefer to make sure I have a 100% clean slate before flashing. I download the rom, put it on my sdcard. Then I use "format all" by Calkin, then flash the downloaded ROM thru clockwork/annonRA. This way I am 100% sure everything was wiped as clean as possible before going into a new rom. ROM's like MIUI seem to have issues if you don't do it this method....
*shrug* for what its worth.

Sounds good to me.

A good wipe always works well but many have also flashed tons via Rom Manager with no issues. I have used it many times also with no issues. I'd say use it and if for some reason you end up getting a few f/c issues then reflash manually after wiping directly from recovery.
If good devs like Myn are going to take the time to have it listed in RM then might as well take advantage.

While I do agree, I know for 100% sure if you don't format_all on MIUI you'll end up with random reboots; yes some still do no matter what but 99% of people the format_all cure 'em. That's enough proof for me to always follow this method -- better to be 100% safe and eliminate as many potential problems as possible. OP - either way will work... do what works best for you.

This is that "because it's there, it works" mentality. Yes, ROM Manager is safe, however it is not the best method for installing ROMs. I agree with the above statement of Calkulin's format all. I won't flash a new ROM now without it, and I have noticed a performance increase

[Q] irc, myn's rls5, toastmod kernal.....wth is wrong

Ok since this the third time typing this here is the condensed version. Running myns rls5 ontop of toastmod kernel listed on same page. Initial flash went ok minus the Flickr screen, distortion lines laterally, horrendous battery life, weird boot process...osmonitor I had to install due to interference with the OS. Myns crashed a lot with in first flash. Also some one dumb down how to use an irc app cuz I'm also lost....also what IM service can I get hold of u guys on cuz I hate forums.... too impatient
Ok no help? Not even some direction for irc where I can get some real help? Well just flashed a diff kernel thanks for the help guys. The Droid community has been a very unhelpful one compared to iPhone....
(irc help would be awesome still since I now have some help with main issue- I enter all the correct info into the app but it shows nothin. I've tried several to no avail. I appreciate the help) second I've ran into more pretentious ppl in these forums for Android then others no offense to the good guys but just my exp. It was brash to say that in this post tho. Thank you guys again for the ones willing.
That's because even the biggest idiot can work an iphone.

Patience dude. I didn't catch it, but what exact kernel are you using, net has a lot of em, the one in the OP of myn's thread you mean? What recovery(and version of that recovery, some versions of clockwork floating around that have some bugs i think) did you use to flash the rom? what radio version and pri version do you currently have installed? Which ROM were you coming from, and did you do a full wipe(data, cache, davlik cache) before flashing it? I have never experienced anything like you are describing whilst using Myn's, his ROMs have been solid. Give a little more info and surely we can help you get running smoothly again.
thanks for the reply heres the details...myn's rls5, net toast havs more, ra_superson
Sincerely thanks for your reply. Typing this on my evo as my screen tears on and off. Running ra_supersonic(newest ver.) With Myns rls5 on net havs more smartass as listed on page. Updated to current radio and pri as listed on his post. Only dalvik and cache wiped not data. Flashed
Hulu and data governor hacks...CPU is only overlooked to 1190 in smartass and can't go any higher. This was my first root and flash so came from stock 2.2 on 3.30 ver. Have noticed avg using temp is around 103 off charger, cameras broke, my CPU in system panel says I'm running 100% continuously. Did a fast reboot , norm reboot, and still doin it. I had diminished battery life from the get go, I understand battery life per clockspeed relation but have underclocked profile to try to assist, which only cause frustration when coming back from lock screen and its still tryin to switch profile. Lagged the phone nearly locked out several times cuz it couldn't keep up with my fingers.0003 hw....I think that's it. Thank you again
Looks like we're running nearly the same setup, minus my ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery. I have attempted the stock kernel furnished in the Rom zip but since it didn't offer overclock I switched to net havs more smartass. I do the dalvik and cache wipe each time.

Not trying to be a smart ass but do you realize that by insulting us will not get you any help? Rhetorical question
From reading what you jus stated the obvious problem is you did not do a FULL WIPE as you should do when flashing between roms.
Also next time please be patient as those like myself who browse through this section to help impatient ppl like your self, do actually have a life outside of xda. Its been a big snow storm in the southeast so most like myself included are outside enjoying the snow!
DO A FULL WIPE THEN REPORT BACK!
Gonna ignore the soap box chatter...
Obviously know I didn't do full wipe.....just gonna wait for other poster
gotta do a full wipe if you are switching between roms

also make sure whatever kernel your using works with the 3.70 based roms, as many dont.

Sorry you feel that way but since i have had the hero, on every thread about a rom says wipe all! This must be a joke for someone as rude as yourself to come on here and disrespect those who are trying to help.
Next time you decide to flash a rom remember to do a full wipe because inside the data partition is files for the particular rom, if you dont wipe, the new files will just over lay but not delete the old one. This will cause conflicting issues within the files as the phone tries to do both at the same time.
Screen tearing and the "jigglies" as I like to call it have always come from kernels - in my experience. And just because someone might have the same set up as you, the way it affects your phone ccan be quite different as you are running different apps, different settings, etc.
First thing I would do if I were you is to freeze any kernel govenor you are using - no setcpu, no secreen off profile, no set on boot, no os monitor govenor, no nothing like that. You don't want want any of that going on when you flash a new rom or kernel.
I know you don't want to do a full data wipe so let's see if we cna get you going without that. I used to HATE doing data wipes, I don't mind so much now because I've learned that trobule shooting can frequently take longer than just doing a data wipe.
I would say #1 make sure you are using AMON RA. Power button-reboot-recovery. Wipe cache at least twice, wipe dalvik at least twice. Now JUST flash the rom (you've already said your radios are updated so you wont have a problem with this). Let the phone boot up and give it time to settle in. You wont have any screan tearing. Now you're running a completely stock Myn's rls5 rom. Check some stuff out, make sure your basic settings are good, make sure your 4g is not scanning, etc.
Make a nandroid of this and keep it.
Now start making changes if you'd like. Flash a different font, flash a different kernel, etc. But leave all the governors OFF until you have a kernel that you KNOW will run ok on your phone. For example - I can run 2 of ziggy's kernels but the others don't work for me. I can run a few of net's kernels, but many don't work for me.
So my basic suggestion is to make sure you get a stable, stock Myn's rls5 on your phone before you mod it. If you can't get that, then yes - you might want to wipe data. Doing a batch backup in Titanium is really easy and it makes restoring very easy as well. It's our own customizing that is time consuming because we are all probably very picky (and proud!) of our beautiful phones.
Thanks for the helpful info from ALL that posted. I understand the risk of the non entire wipe, nandroid is safe of original stock Rom but not of new one. After tinkering with setcpu I've gotten more consistent stability. I know I will reflash with an entire data wipe here soon to see results. Running ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery.
I've made list of check point when I test some new Roms and kernels. I have some more question on backing up user info from backed up apps but Im sure ill find it on here.
Now that my system is stable for the time being, some one mind help me setup irc? And also has anyone issues with camera breaking with this Rom or kernel? I should wait to wipe entirely to see if it fixes, but I'd rather not waste my time with this Rom or kernel if the camera won't work. Love everything else about this Rom, need to learn more about the kernel to praise it. Ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery i like also.

You're welcome. I am late at getting back to this post, but yea. Definitely. As everyone else has suggested, you have to do a full wipe when changing ROMS. Only time you could get away with just wiping davlik cache and cache is when upgrading the same rom ( like from rls 3 to rls 4, and rls to rls 5), but even then, it doesn't always work. Full wipe is always recommended. I would also recommend downloading your apps one at a time from the market, and adding your mods one at a time, make sure everything is stable after each flash. Good luck.

If your phone is the newer hardware (late 003 or 004), you can only use the stock kernel, or a kernel based off stock for the camera to work. That would be htc #15. I believe Net's 4.3 kernels are based off of that. I am also pretty sure that Net explains that in his kernel thread in the development section.
Thanks guys did the full wipe and reflashed, working ok except SD file permissions are screwed up now. I go to test camera and it says insufficient file permissions when I take a pic. I go to check in astro, I see all the file that are supposed to be there but no editing; it still shows rw. Did not have card in when full wipe was completed would that effect it? Any help? Haven't attempted another SD card. I hope this isn't the second SD card to be trashed during my rooting process. Atleast I can still see that there r files on there. Thanks for the help.
Also any help gettin set with irc? Still having a horrible time trying to work with it....it seems so simple.... so 0003hw are stuck with stock roms or ones based off them...I believe nets kernel on that page was. I will test it out and let you know. I just need to know about the SD card problem. Thanks again guys.
Theres been lots of issues with 3.70 based roms. I always stick to lower versions..usually 3.30 and have no problems.. i also hace seen alot of people having battery problems on 3.70 after updating to 1.90 pri. They usually downgrade to pri 1.77 and there good.....

This isn't true, the problem is ALWAYS the kernel. I'm running myn rls5 and mikfroyo 4.3 with an SBC #15 v7 kernel (i'll edit post and add the link) and I have had zero issues except I can't download MMS messages on 4g on mikfroyo.

Okay, this process will 100% work. It's the one I've been using since my lowly mytouch slide oh so many months ago.
*before you do this, make sure you have backups of your nandroid and your rsa keys. I'll edit post and give you links on how to back up your rsa keys*
RSA Key back-up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900 ...since you're rooted you can go straight to the part where it says "if you're rooted do this.."
1. First you need to fix the sd card. Create a folder on your computer desktop and call it "my sd card". Plug your phone into the computer and select "disk drive". Next you're going to copy EVERYTHING from the sd card and place it in the folder on the desktop (and dude I mean everything! AS IS, DON'T CHANGE ANY NAMES). Then, you're going to unhook your phone, go to settings>sd and phone storage. Then you're going to format your sd card. Yes, do it, but make sure you have EVERYTHING backed up first. After that's done, plug your phone back in, select disk drive and copy everything from your "my sd card" folder on your computer and put it back onto your sd card.
*phew*
Okay now that the sd problem is fixed, here's how you fix the rest. You see, when you upgrade your PRI to 1.90 and your radio, etc etc you gotta update the kernel to a version that's 1.90 supported. I'll edit post and post a link to where you can find one OR you can just use the kernel that's included with myn's rom because it WILL WORK. *edit* the kernel I'm using has been taken down because of the witch hunt against SBC kernels. So for now, just stick with stock. It works just fine.
Anyway.
Steps to getting myn working perfectly.
*before starting, re-download myn rls5 in case the screen flickering was caused by a corrupted download*
1. Download Titanium Back-up from the market. Back up all the apps you want to keep (basically, anything you downloaded from the market as you'll get facebook, sense widgets, etc back). You can do this while you re-download the rom.
2. Make a nandroid back-up in case something goes seriously wrong. A rom that flickers your screen is better than a brick.
3. Once that back-up is done, reboot into recovery. Once there, you're going to WIPE EVERYTHING. Full data, cache and dalvik wipe. Yes, do it. There is no other option.
3. Flash myn's rom. Let it go all the way through. Do NOT flash a new kernel until you've found one that's 3.70 compatible and works with PRI 1.90. Myn rls5 is designed to work with the newest updates (which means a #15 kernel, like the one that came stock).
4. Reboot. If the screen is still flickering, then at this point it's a hardware problem. Flash back to stock, unroot and go get a new one. If it works fine, re-download titanium back-up from the market and restore all your apps. From there it's just putting your widgets back on your home screen.
From here, you can search the forums for a kernel that works with the newest updates. If you read them, they'll tell you what they're compatible with. Remember do NOT use an AOSP kernel with a SENSE rom, that's just spells IDIOCY. Until you find a kernel that works, stick with the one that came with the rom because everyone knows that one works.
I hope this helps. As for the IRC chat, not all the experts are on all the time. If no one is online that can help when you get one, try getting a few hours earlier or a few hours later.

[Q] HELP!!! how to get the new evo update with root...COMPLETE noob here guys

hey xda fans....ok so i have a severe issue here:
i have the evo 4g...rooted... and am on sense with 2.2 and 3.70 (i think you guys know what that is) so anyway i want to get the new update and start really having fun with my phone. I have not been able to fully understand all this rooting and flashing etc...O_O so i installed ROM manager, which now some peeps are sayin dont use if you dont know what you are doing WELL HI, THAT WOULD BE ME so for all the experts, gods and godesses of rooting (EVO) flashing, please please please help me from start to absoulute finish...i need to know what am i downloading, running, saving and to where- that was a huge issue too i couldnt find the files after i downloaded them LOL if i am successful...I will post the greatest YOUTUBE, forum, blog about this..i am so lost right now
b4 i forget a couple updates of info everytime i tried to flash or do any type of recent updates i get the usb connection 170 error or maybe 171 cant remember now....ummm...i rooted originally with unrevoked so unrooting i wouldnt have a clue...and yes i have searched allll possible threads for help but i only get 50/50 and then still get messed up..thanks
thanks again and happy rooting
While I am not going to hold your hand as there is plenty of information on these forums and the internet, I will steer you in the right direction. Since you are rooted, all you really need to do is download the rooted version of the latest stock rom. There are a few in the development section. The version is 4.22. After downloading you will flash this rom in recovery. Make sure you do a nandroid backup before flashing the update.
DO NOT unroot just to install the update. You will lose the ability to root hour phone for the foreseeable future.
Good luck

ok thanks i will try it now...stay tuned
Ur not going to see much difference. The update dissapointed lots of people expecting a new look. Install a couple of custom roms if u want to have some fun. I am using the MikG v1.03 Rom with new sense incorperated and its waaaay better than the stock update we just got.

Pleat try to see this as advice and not being an ass.
Rooting your phone is really for being able to dig in to your phone and get all you want out of it and be able to customize more than the average evo.
What were your initial intentions for rooting? I get the draw to have free wifi tether but, that just happens to be one perk of it. Of course, there are the options of kernels and cpu clocking.
But, really the developers are attempting to bring the newest and most useful and functional features to the roms opening the full potential of your phone.
Aside from that, if you are unclear and confused about the process of flashing, you should really hold off and do some more research.
Go to the wiki page and read up! i spent about a month reading everything I could find on rooting, flashing, kernels, radios, prls, threads on roms and their issues and up sides. I knew what I was doing and what rom and features I was going to use.
Honestly, youtube will also be your friend. A few devs also post videos people have made about their roms including how to flash them. You should also read up on the results of mistakes made during flashing and how to fix them.
Get to know your phone and submit it to do your will!
Good luck!

Your apps were gone because you wiped data. Try Titanium Backup - there's a free version in the market that allows you to backup and restore, get the Pro key to avoid agreeing to the permissions/install of each individual app. The Pro version also allows for a larger number of backups per app, where the free version limits to one and when you make another backup it overwrites the first one. You can also freeze apps with the full version, but if you enable "Chuck Norris Mode" in settings the free version will allow you to uninstall system apps. There are other perks to the Pro Key, but I digress...
If you backup your apps & data, you can restore them on the new one. Whenever you flash a new rom, always wipe data, cache and dalvik (dalvik cache is under advanced in Clockwork). If you're simply updating the rom (ie to a newer version by the same dev, like Cyanogenmod nightlies) you can just wipe cache and dalvik unless otherwise stated in the rom. Whenever you flash anything other than a rom - kernels, themes, mods, radios, etc - do not wipe data.
If you don't know which rom to use, as long as you have a nandroid backup you can always go back to your setup that you like... so flash away. If you want to stick with something closer to what you're used to, try Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo... it's still FroYo. If you want Gingerbread/Sense, I've heard great things about MikG. I would avoid any rom that needs you to partition your SD card until you get your feet wet & know what you're doing.
Oh, and if you decide to flash the new radio update, don't pull the battery when you see the screen you've never seen before - you'll brick your phone. Just wait it out, and it'll take you back to recovery where you can then reboot normally.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Definitely look at Mik, and learn all you can about partitioning your card for APS2SD, you'll want that for the bigger ROMS, about flashing radios, very important to do that correctly, about theming, and so many other things that being rooted opens up for you.
Mik is great for sure, also kings roms. If you want something that is still htc sense there are many great developers and right now is the time because they are able to merge ports with the ota for the max performance for our phone while running gingerbread and having nifty new 3.0 sense features.
And maybe someday you will venture to the aosp world some day...

[Q] EL29 and Updating

I'm currently running GB El29 and am looking to update. I've done a lot of reading around the forum, the wiki, and a few other websites, and I'd just like a little bit of clarification. I figure I'd ask now, before doing anything, as opposed to asking later, after something's gone wrong.
Looking at the Wiki, I was considering updating to Calkulin's E4GT 2 v1.6, or unrooting and then waiting for the Official ICS update (it was rerolled today, apparently.) Or, to Blazer, but I'm not sure if going to the ICS version or GB version is best.
My question - The process to update - Nandroid, Flash Format All, Flash Rom, Success? I've noticed a lot of installs say to "Wipe All", and I assume that's what Flashing Format All does, correct? I just don't want to mess up - I had no problems rooting, following that guide I mentioned, and I've done a lot of reading...I just want to confirm before doing anything. I mean, I know, wipe delvic and clear cache, but Format All does that, correct?
I rooted my phone using "How to Root Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch! [NEW][SPH-D710]" rom Epic4gtouchroot.com. I'd post a link, but I've fewer than 10 posts. All I've done, outside of root, is install the Beats sound files. That's really it.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Read this 10 times over then you should be fine.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of going with. I've read over his topic several times, and even though I'm really not a fan of the transparent notification tray, most of the included mods sound really, really useful. Thanks for the heads up.
And thank you too, jugaloo. I actually have that page bookmarked on my phone lol. I've already made several nandroid backups - I plan on making a titanium backup in a moment. My only concern now is th process from going from El29 GB to E4GT 3. Rereading that thread several times has me wondering - I download the ROM, place it on the SD, boot into recovery, clear delvic and cache, run Format all, then install the ROM, correct? I already have a nandroid backup, so in case anything here goes wrong, I can just flash the backup back on, correct?

I already have a nandroid backup, so in case anything here goes wrong, I can just flash the backup back on, correct?

I just run the format x2 script made by ruj in the blu kuban thread. Then i follow the devs op to install. From what i see you have your feet planted and ur about to make that plunge. Id take the next step and try the flash. Id go with a different rom the the fe22 is out of date and calk has moved on. Try blu kubans rom its super stable and ita built from source. I myself like gb better.

I was thinking that - Calk's topic was updated in May, while blukuban was updated in February. I mean, I can always try both, right? I'd like to go with Calk's first, then try blukuban, only because BK is heavily themed. But either way, thanks!
Edit
I didn't realize the blukuban thread had updates outside of the OP. It was very recently updated. I might check that one out first.
Yes the blu kuban ics is always up todate and he is there for the people. If you want ics builds that are more stockish id aokp they have theming going on but is nice and stable. Read all of the op and there sites for correct install. Cm9 alpha 6 is also really good. Blazers rom is also really good. Those are all stockish built from source. For gb roms id go with either calks 3.0 or UnOfifcials ics gb rom. For me gb gives me most bang for battery and bandwith. Those last two roms are highly recomended. Calks is super fast stock with options for themes. Unofficial gb ics is themed lightly and is very good for battery and the animations are nice

Alright, awesome. Waiting for my battery to finish charging (my phone reset while performing a titanium backup, and the battery life dropped from 44 to 9, so I'm getting it back up to at least 50.)
So just to recap
-
To Install
Boot to recovery
Make a NAND Backup
Wipe Phone (Format All/wipe delvic/wipe cache)
Install ROM
Right? That's what Blukuban's install requires, and Calk's doesn't have any special instructions, outside of " a wipe is recommended BEFORE flashing if coming from another ROM", which is what the Format All is for, correct?
You've been insanely helpful. Thank you so much! I'm also looking into UnOfficial (it's not on the Wiki, so I didn't really know about it until you mentioned it.

Charge the bartery more. Use a wipe script dont touch the fomat that is built into the cwm while flashing a ics rom. If you use the wipe x2 script found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25448865
U should be good. It wipes everythings even both of the caches twice. If you already have a newer nandroid id just go with that instead of making a new one everytime you flash. If possible download the roms to pc check the md5 check sums make sure they match. If they match transfer to the phone. When downloading to the phone it has a higher chance of a bad download. I try and flash at 75% battery incase of error and you have to restore a previous nandroid. If you want read this post about the eMMc bug. Most roms are safe now but some are not current.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644364
Not trying to scare you with that last link you should know about it before hand so you know the dangers of flashing a non safe ics roms. If you have any more queations shoot. But i think your good to go
UnOfficial
One more thing. Qbking27 has install video guides for 90% of the roms in the threads of the rom. Id watch those before installing that rom you want. Some times they are buried in the op. You can use them as a step by step as you install. Best if luck to you and i want a report once you get your new custom rom on your phone.

You got it!
I'm doing a GB build - from what I've come across, GB just gets better battery life, and I just feel more comfortable using it. At least, until the official ICS rolls out from Samsung. If that one is well received, and it's worth it, I'll unroot/wipe fresh and try it out.
That being said though, I'll use x2 then. Will it matter if I do both, just for good, measure? (Both x2 and FormatAll)
And yes, I'll be downloading to PC first, then transferring. I feel more comfortable doing it that way. I'll be doing Calk's 3.0 first, and if I don't like it, I'll try either Unofficial or BluKuban.
And once it's done charging more, and I perform the install, I'll report back, with a screenshot or two as well.

Just use the wipe x2 that does everything you need. Blu kubans gb rom is good but wifi is whacky. Id go with his ics build. Well your set good luck!

Alright so, I installed it, and all is working well. It's actually a bit...erm, slow? Whenever I swipe from screen to screen on the homepage it's a bit laggish. But it works! I'll run around with it for a little while and see how it works. I'm in the process of reinstalling my older apps, updating my contacts and such.
Thanks for all of your help!
Edit
A little worried, to be honest. Some of the apps I'm trying to install is giving me the "Package file is invalid" error off of the Google Market. Dropbox, Amazon, etc. Not sure what to make of it, to be honest.
Try and clear the cache for the market. If your using tb try to unmount the sd card if that dont work do fresh installs off the market place . Also go into recovery and clear the cache and dalvik.

Done. I cleared both caches, and so far, all of the problems I've had with the market is gone. (Dropbox didn't install on the first try, but it did after the second.)
I've replaced the default touchwiz interface with Launcher Pro (TW was running wicked slow - loads of lag with just basic scrolling) and it seems to be running well. And it's definitely saving on battery life.)
That being said, it's not really my cup of tea. I restored my contacts and such, but eh. I think I'll try UnOfficial, and if it's not better, either go back to el29 or update to official ics.
I'll likely keep this one until tomorrow. You've been such a huge help. Thank you so much.
Actually, with launcher pro replacing it, this is pretty good. I want to mess with it more. I'll run it for a few days and see how it fairs.
Ok wait before everyone leaves, Ive got some questions too!
I just got my replacement(after a hard brick trying JB) and figure Id ask my questions in this thread rather than starting a new one..
1. Ive decided to odin EL29 EVERY TIME I want to flash a new rom, just to be safe. If I use CMW with EL29 and decide to try out CM9, Do I always need to flash a aokp kernel? Or is that built into the CM9 install?
2. If I like CM9, and want to make a nandroid backup of it, do I need to Odin back to EL29 first to back it up? Or is it safe to do it with the recovery that comes with CM9?
3. If the answer to #2 is yes, meaning I do have to odin back to EL29, how do I restore my backup? Let me explain:
Lets say I flash CM9, make a nandroid of CM9, then decide to try out say a different rom, like a TW rom. Then I hate the TW rom and wanna restore my backup of CM9. Do I need to ODIN back to EL29 to restore the nandroid? I read in the "how not to brick my..." thread its bad to restore a ICS rom from a GB Kernel. Can someone please explain?
Ive really, really tried to search and read as much as possible before asking, but a lot of the threads are old and have contradicting information. Sorry for being so noobish, but I dont wanna brick my new phone. I come from Evo, Evo3d, Hp Touchpad, etc, where there arent as many issues to flash customs roms. Ive rooted and flashed custom roms ever since the PPC6600, 100's of times and NEVER had a problem. Sorry, this just really confuses me for some reason!!!
Can't help you with CM9 or AOKP because I've never tried either one. The OP was talking about launcher pro. I highly recommend Nova launcher or Apex. They are both specifically built for ICS and look and act like stock android with great customization features.
Was going to make another topic, but I thought I'd ask here first
- The notification tray in this rom (Calk 3.0) is transparent, and I'm not fond of the icons in the Notification Tray. I tried using Rom Tool Box lite to change it, but the tray won't change, no matter what I do. Does anyone know how to fix this? I've tried before - it just won't change.

I don't mess with rom tool box. I hear good and bad things about it. If you start at page 1080 and read to the end people post new system ui's but it may theme it a little bit. They have blazers UI in there and one other one I think. I'm not sure it is transparent or not. Or even make a post in the thread about it. I know its still active and you may find your answer. Sorry I can't really help you on this.

[Q]Guides For Installing Roms?

Coming from an EVO 4G I thought I had a pretty good grip on installing roms. A week after getting and rooting my S3 I'm still gun shy. I want to install Jelly Bomb but I keep seeing posts about flash counters and dirty flash. I've never heard this mentioned before. Are these Samsung exclusive terms? I wanted to go easy and find a Rom as close to Stock as possible with the ability to remove apps to get my feet wet but haven't found one. This phone seems easier to brick than the EVO. Am I right? Also, I see things referencing Touchwiz and fishing it. Very confused. Samsung's version of Sense I guess?

Flash counters can be reset pretty easy these days. all roms labeled as having TW or touchwiz are pretty much stock with things like battery saving mods or battery hogging apps removed that are usually not needed"debloated".

Here's what you do...former evo'er here as well...
Grab the one click Odin LJ7 that you will find in sg3/android dev. Titled (root)odin one clicks by billard. Read the post so you understand how to use it. Save it to your CPU. That will save you if you ever brick your shiny new phone.
Go on you tube and search qbking77....you'll find every video you want regarding rooting and installing cmw
After that its the exact same way to flash ROMs as your evo. I promise.
Good luck

I luv this rom, super themed though, not everyone likes all the blue. For me everything works. Just the statusbar after a reboot, you have to pull down notification bar once to get it to show up. Other than that no problems, kernal in 10.2 allows overclocking also.
this post sent from my Jellybombed GalaxySIII
Your fine then...just install cmw and your good to go.
The galaxy 3 is different than the evo in the sense that its very easy to root and unroot using Odin. The evo is a pain to unroot.
Make sure your grab that one click Odin and save tho because it will bail you out of trouble if something gets screwed up. You could run that and it will return you to stock or stock rooted (your choice depending on what file you download).
Anyways. Install cmw. Download ROM to your SD or internal SD. Hold volume up, home, power to cmw. Wipe/factory reset x3, wipe cache, advanced/wipe dalvik, install ROM, reboot
By the way. If you want what you posted in op keep stock but rooted. If you want a better kernel flash team sonics or jelly bomb with kt747....but if I were you I'd go SlimBean...enjoy
One other thing. What's this business about downloading a modem?
The roms are not modem dependant. And chances are if you're on stock you already have the latest modem. If you want to confirm go in the about section of settings and look at your baseband. should end in LJ7. Like I said though its not really important
If the modem isn't that important, why can't I connect to Sprint's network at all? I was working on installing the Goodness ROM which said I had to install a particular modem. I downloaded all files to the computer as suggested, transferred them to the phone then used TWRP as my backup and installed the ROM and the modem as stated. When I went to reboot it told me that there was no ROM installed. So I went back to my recovery installed it and now I can not connect to the network at all. Can someone please help? I need my phone as I am a Paramedic and I talk to the hospitals with it when I am bringing them a pt.

Not trying to sound harsh here but if that's the case just stay stock rooted. You need the phone brother...peoples lives are depending on it...lol
On a lighter side, I do t have experience with that ROM. But sounds like a bad flash. Wipe/factory reset...cache....dalvik...and I even format the internal SD...haven't had any problems
Open the dialer and hit ##72786# Should set ya straight
Oh well that didn't work. I watched the QBKing77 video and followed those instructions. Install took way less than I expected. Maybe two minutes? I pressed reboot and it rebooted back into recovery. That didn't go so well.

Question Opinions about preferred custom roms differences and why do you choose it ?

Wanted to keep a thread for each one opinion on custom roms and why do you choose the rom you are using?
i have tried al custom roms and i always love to flash different ones,
What do you notice regarding stability? performance? battery ? bugs? etc in the rom you are using.
Love to hear all your opinions on this matter.
last time i flashed a custom ROM 10years ago. No need to flash anything since. All factory stock.
All i did for every phone is bloatware removal via ADB
I've only ever used the stock rom since I've had this phone. Using A11, A12 and now A13.
Only 1 annoyances during my time with this phone and stock ROM. ( Camera related blue light bleeding in a very bright artificially lit scenario )
Always stock rom with Root these days
Holy smokes. It's ok to not answer a question if it doesn't apply. Pardon my double negative.
I've been contemplating moving on from to stock to custom, when I came across this thread and thought, well this will be great; several viewpoints about several custom roms, but instead came across a few responses that didn't answer the question that was asked.
It's hard to sift though the roms' threads because, in most cases, you'll see "this is a great rom, everything works perfectly", almost immediately followed by "stuck in a boot loop", "looks like msm again", or "xyz is borked, please fix".
So, to reiterate og's question, what are the thoughts on the custom roms (not stock) for the 1+9pro (not a device from your past)?
Nameless seems to be the most stable out of the custom roms, but lacks more in depth customization. CrDroid and Watchdog are better for customization, but more features usually means more bugs.
I've tried tons of the roms on here and will probably continue to do so as stock OOS just doesn't do it for me. Battery isn't ideal, and aesthetically it's hard to configure to what I like. It definitely works for a lot of people as it has many features and is mostly stable.

It depends on the day honestly. I have a disease, haha. As of right now that's what I'm using. But I'm sure I will flash something else here in the next week.

I'm currently on stag os 13, beta from october with a pair of important bugs... however probably I will flash another one tomorrow. I have to decide first which one xD
However I would ask you what are the steps now for flashing another android 13 rom, considering I'm on android 13 and I prefer not do a clean install (dont want to do any wipes as I have my phone tweaked and fully oriented for privacy)
Los20 Google free
Without gapps, store and ps apps
been on nameless for about 6 months, no complaints
Running my own fork of LineageOS 19 with features cherry-picked from other ROMs (nothing against them but I don't need the extra 30 fazillion features they offer when a handful of features I want does the job just fine). Once LineageOS 20 builds resume with fixes for some of the major issues in place (see the LOS 20 thread for OP9Pro), I'll be upgrading to the New Hotness (I've already made the necessary changes and tested them on my OP7Pro test phone, I'm just waiting for the all-clear for the OP9Pro).

Oof, that's a tough one. You could *attempt* to do a dirty flash of the rom you're wanting to flash. Although, I wouldn't recommend. I've read that people do it with little side effects, but I've also seen people with lots of bugs.
What I typically do is use swiftbackup for SMS and apps, then just restore those on the new rom. But, depending on what tweaks you've applied, that might make things more difficult. As far as I know, there's not a way to restore everything, especially if the tweaks are specific to the rom. Maybe someone else might know a way?
I kept mine as stock w/root since I got it. Just reflashed and I was blown away with how much nicer it feels. Even with the amount of work I'd done to kill bloatware, background processes, etc on the stock rom.

thanks for your answer mate
I didn't touch anything specific to the rom nor kernel. Only much app config and some processes freezing.
So I will save apps+data with my old friend titanium backup pro, don't know another method to do :/
By the way, I will lose root if I do clean flash or can I save that any way?
I guess a clean flash instructions should be something like this?
Extract recovery package zip
Reboot to bootloader & connect your phone to PC
Double click on flash.bat
Reboot to recovery home page & tap Factory reset > Format data/factory reset
Back to recovery home page & tap > Apply update > Apply from ADB
Now sideload rom using command adb sideload <rom_filename>.zip
Now reboot to system.

Of course, glad I could contribute. Swiftbackup will do data for apps as well, but titanium backup should work too if that's what you prefer.
Yep, there's a couple ways to do it, and that will work. As far as root, you will definitely lose it, but you can either sideload magisk:
- download magisk APK and rename to .zip file
- after sideloading rom finishes, reboot to recovery
- sideload magisk.zip
Or
- follow root guide on this forum
Tried about every rom posted that I can find. A lot of nice roms, depends on what you want for customization. The one I prefer is Xtended. Been back and forth since A11 each one a little nicer. The latest -- v5 is best for me. I always go back to it. Currently on stock OOS13. Not all that bad with little tweaking. My disappointment is the lack of kernel development for the phone after A11. I guess the sources released by OnePlus a mess. Waiting for Ancient to be released. Could be nice.

Other backup options I like - tarb and Neo Backup. Swift I don't like because it only stores the latest backup, and the google play tied licensing is annoying when bouncing between various devices.
Used to love titanium backup but it never works successfully for me anymore
