Extremely slow data speeds - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the process of switching from the Hero on Sprint to the G2 on TMobile. Grabbed a G2 last week during the free deal.
I'm in what the tmobile coverage map calls the "faster" area, but not hspa+. Running the speedtest app, I'm lucky to get over 500kbps download and 700kbps up.
Phone shows "H" on the status bar and full bars. I've tried several area's around town with similar results.
Is this just normal TMobile data speeds? Just seems very slow compared to my Hero.

I'm in the "fastest" area and my 3G DL speed with G2 today was 57kbps. At first I thought there was something wrong or something I'm not doing right but at least for the last 24 hours it has been this way. Even AT&T's EDGE connection can mark the same speed.
I don't know about the other areas but at least in my area TMO's so-called "4G" is a joke.

Make sure you guys dont have the "use only 2g networks" checked off under the Menu/Settings/Wireless&Networks/MobileNetworks options.

No, that is not the case. Thanks though!

Try tellin tmobile check ur apn and do a factory reset

Only 850 kbps DL?
Ok, I'm a newbie and it's possible I'm missing something obvious. But I see that most everyone on here, 3G or HSPA+, is getting 5Mbps or better on their Speedtest.net tests.
I can't even get 1Mbps (8 tests over a half hour: Lowest DL = 701 kbps, highest DL = 916.) Uploads are 550 to 650.
I've also noted - and maybe this is relevent - that everyone's speedtest looks different than mine. I'm using the Speedtest.net Android Application DL'd from market. Mine is a round stopwatch looking dial, all the screenshots I see posted on here are square boxes. This is curious to me, but doubtfully the problem.
My phone is a U.S. G2, rooted and flashed CyanogenMod 6.1.1 and overclocked to 1305 MHz. No other mods - the thing was stock and being turned on for the first time Wednesday (and still would be if it weren't for this forum! Thanks!)
What could be the trouble?
Thanks in advance
Reid

From my experience, if its showing the "3G" icon, you have no data connection. I mean, you won't get any throughput over 3G. Only hspa+, hsdpa, or edge.

Yes they do
EDIT: >.< /facepalm I'm a jackass. I completely spaced that I was running CM. Its just been habit since I've been running it so long. Sorry for the douchebaggery on my behalf.
And as for OP:
Go to a bigger city. I live in Colorado Springs, CO and my 4G is kinda crap. Especially in my apartment. But when I go to a larger city like Denver, I notice speeds almost double what I get at home. So it could all just be your location.

No, they don't. The G2 ROM is altered by T-mobile to show an 'H' symbol anytime you're on something higher than EDGE - that means UMTS, HSPA, HSDPA, HSPA+, etc all show an 'H' (even though only HSPA+ is really considered 4G). Cyanogen ROMs and the Sense ROMs actually show a 3G when you're on 3G and an 'H' when you're on HSPA+.

I've actually seen the 3g symbol a couple of times on my G2. So yeah it does. Might only be on a specific rom though. I have only seen it while running a cm7 nightly build.

Correct - as I said, Cyanogen and Sense ROMs show the 3G. The stock G2 ROM does not - T-Mobile altered it so that it jumps straight from E to H.

I just saw it again. I would like it to pop up when I am in a 3g area and when I'm not getting h+ but it seems to only hang around for a little bit.

I have used CM 6.1 and currently using GV 1.5 and both show 3G and H symbols.

In all 15 markets they have 3G in today? It's great T-Mobile can afford this, but it's because their coverage is is non-existent.
i would alwais have H (HSPA) but now i have 3G -_- wtf?!
At least you all have 3G...... Of course AT&T has had 3G down here forever.
so heres a secret......philadelphia is a test market for HSPA+ and its all ready working in south jersey as well.
no cause y would i go from H to 3G wack. but tru atleast have 3G. hope igt my H back =[
Speed Test Results
You just made my day. I am in the minneapolis area and I am consistently reporting speeds of around 1000kbps. Highest I've seen was 1.3 on dsl reports but I think that was an anomaly. Previously I was getting around 400-500kbps. and this is in a building where I get horrable reception. If I've got 1 bar and 3g I'm a very happy camper.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who stopped getting the H symbol all the time after Tmo released this info. Now it's just 3G with an occasional H. Oh well, it's still 3G!

ikno wen i surf the web the H would come up for only like 1min nd den bk to 3g. booo tmobile =/
Here in Atlanta I pretty much always have a H. I rarely see 3G and when I do it will be for a second before turning to E. The speeds are amazing though. T-Mobile has been smoking my Verizon phone and my Sprint Data card.
Of what I've seen is that usually the H comes up when there is data transmission, if the connections is IDLE then it bumps back to 3G... at least is the behavior I had with the old Kaiser and now the Rhodium.
Yanks! Ha Ha... supposed to be world leaders in tech... Yeah right, they even believe their own propoganda!
HK, UK, UEA... to name a few have had HSDPA for ages (OK, UK pays an arm and a leg for mobile data!!!) BUT!! the big difference is WE HAVE ALMOST TOTAL COVERAGE BY EACH NETWORK!!
Don't have any bandwidth restictions on ours or teliscopic antenna half a yard long.
Why do you think every mobile manufaturer has to mod their units specifically for USA??
Catch up guys....
Jokes BTW...
yeah I have noticed the last couple days that my H is almost always 3G now. I was concerned until I saw this information.

For the past few days i have been getting a "H" by the bars instead of "3G". Any ideas, I am hoping its not for "Home" and i am loosing 3G

Yea i know of the upgrade. Dident think it would change the bars.
It's purely cosmetic anyways, I wouldn't worry too much about it. In fact, the setting can be changed in one or more of the tweak utilities. The Tilt 2 has the opposite issue. The stock ROM only shows 3G instead of H.
I'm on AT&T and I get the H all the time. I don't really notice any speed difference though.

Doesnt the H has nothing to do with the radio rom?? it's just in what area you are where the signal is the strongest.. 3G, Hdspa, or Gprs.. In the stupid little pesantville i live i often get only 'G' for gprs,, i only get 3g in the big cities..
you just have 'H' because theres no strong 3G signal in your area

Being in your shoes I would be happy to see H instead of 3G as it is 3.5G rather than 3G ;-)
H stands for the latest standard HSPA (where HSDPA --> High Speed Download & HSUPA --> HS Upload) while 3G is a generic High Speed network of 3rd generation.
With 3.5G one is getting up to 7.2Mbit per second Download and up to 2.4Mbit per second Upload while with 3G it is well below 1Mbit per second in both cases.
Of course, it is UP TO and depends on particular implementation...
Cheers.

there was an article last week about tmobile upgrading thier network to hspa, theoreticle 7.2Mbps. with the rom that came with my tmo tp2, i never showed the "h", when i went to the energyb rom series, i was often showing an "h" but there was no differance in my speed. it is clear to me that the tmo hspa 7.2 upgrade has not hit here in seattle yet. i just upgraded my radio as i saw that someone in a previous post has the official tmo 6.5 upgrade and he was gettting 4mbps.
i sure do hope that tmo gets this working in seattle soon...
Sorry, this doesn't mean anything usually. If you are running non-stock (aka flashed) then most likely it just is the ROM that changes the 3G to H. I am on ATT and that just is what took place of the 3G icon. It doesn't mean anything else. Now, on stock ROM's it could.

HSPA+

I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.

I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That would explain why my speed test have been the same on umts and hspad on the status section =( thx mate
Sent from my G2, XDA app =)
When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

Max download 0.89!
Hello,
I am new to Android - do I have to turn on something to get higher speeds?
I consitently get 0.89 no matter where I am.
In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.
I am thinking a bad phone, maybe? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mobile Signal Widget for me also

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

I've not heard of anyone seeing an 'H+' on the phone... *going to read manual*

Connection status shown as "G"

Anyone know what the "G" means in the connection status area where one normally sees "3G" or "E"? I don't see it often, and when I do it seems to be in areas with weak 3G coverage. However, I know I am not mistaken, it is just "G", no "3G", just "G." Also, I never see the "H" that some report in the connection status area, even though I am in an area where HSDPA+ is active. I know I cannot get HSDPA+ speeds on the Slide, but I consistently get 3-4 Mbps down and 1-2 Mbps up (D.C. metro).
G is for GPRS which is even slower than edge. It's what I live with constantly here in Barbados.

Youre probably not going to see an H if you have stock, but im surprised you havent figured out that the 3-4 mbps is hspa+ that you are connected with.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Well, I have figured out that the 3-4 Mbps is HSPA+. What I meant was that I know there is HSPA+ in my area, and it helps overall speed, regardless of whether the phone is capable of it or not. The Slide hardware does not do HSPA+. I still thought the H would show up for HSPA connections whether HSPA+ or not. Guess not though if you are saying stock ROM's won't show it, since that is what I run, completely stock.
Yeah the only two phones capable of HSPA+ are the G2 and the mt4g. 3-4 mbps is HSPA. If you were connected to HSPA+ it would be more around 7-10 mbps, if I remember correctly. The only stock rom I've seen an H in is the G2's, but both the G1 and the G2 have had fairly stock android roms, not heavily modified sense, its kind of the style of those phones.

[Q] SGH-T989D (Telus) Slow "4G" on T-Mobile

Hello all!
Noob here, first post, so first and foremost please pardon any ignorance. I did search here as well as google without finding any significant results. I appreciate anyone who takes time to answer.
I recently bought an unlocked Galaxy S2x (989D) for use here in the USA on T-Mobile. I went with the 989D and not the 989 because I'm using a grandfathered T-Zones plan.
I rooted/flashed Juggernaut 5.0 through cwm, and the phone is working fine EXCEPT my download/upload speeds are lousy. Consistently 1.5Mbps down / 500Kbps Up MAX with 800-1200 ms ping via speedtest app from various parts of Maryland (Baltimore/DC corridor) and using different servers. My N1 has always tested faster than that in the same area, which is why I'm particularly concerned.
I tried flashing Telus KJ3, T-Mo KID and T-Mo KL1 modems found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426001
But saw no improvement. I've also tried using the stock epc.t-mobile and the old internet2.voicestream APNs, with equally crappy results on both.
Is it just a matter of T-Mo having terrible speed over HSPA in this area, or is it possible that there's something screwy going on with the device/rom/kernel/radio? FWIW, calls and texts are fine, and wifi calling works as well. I've attached a few screenshots in case any of them might be helpful.
TIA!
hmm... you should read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514954
there's no spoon
highest speed i ever got was close to 10 Mbps in Canada 3G/3.5G networks
seems more like the area you live in, have poor Tmo coverage for data
That's disappointing, to say the least, especially since according to the coverage map, I'm smack in the middle of a giant blob of "4G Excellent" coverage. I'm still confused as to why my Nexus One would have better speedtest results. Perhaps HTC/Google FTW.
seriously???
Is this legit? Full 4G signal? I can't imagine how it's THIS slow. Does jugg 5.0 have any build.prop tweaks that could be farking with my data? Just threw my sim card into my N1 to compare and it's way faster.

I am also wondering about this same fact with a real Telus phone in Canada. I'm also wondering about the difference between the 3 radios that were provided with the Darkside.UCLE2 Beta 5 ROM. (Don't get me wrong, appreciate all the hard work from these guys, amazing where the T989 dev has come already!)
I tried all 3 radios, and get different speeds with each one. Blazes 4G radio I can't seem to tether, and then the T-mo radios I'm having issues with Bluetooth and even Data.
Could someone if you have a minute explain what the difference is between the radios and maybe suggest what radio would be best for us Telus users in Canada?
Cheers, TIA!

JoshD422,
I will be the first to tell you living in Toronto, that its completely unpredictable in Canada.
I've had areas if there is high use downtown I will get even worse results than that (seen a ping of over 1000ms ).
At the same time I can redo a speedtest about 200 metres away, and get results up in the 10 Mbps and pings of 45 ms. So I don't believe that part has to do with the radios but more the quality of service, and I'm in whats supposed to have the best service city in Canada.
Your problem definitely seems to be due to the T-Zones plan. I don't have that plan and I'm using an unlocked stock Telus T989D in Maryland and I get 2-4 Mbps down and 0.7-1.0 Mbps up

Yes, only "3g" icon in MD/DC area. I guess maybe perhaps this is not as fast as using the T-Mobile radio software that comes stock in the T989, but it's plenty fast for me. I don't think the "4g" capability is much faster, anyway.

I think the "4g" icon is purely cosmetic. I have an unlocked Telus T989d on Tmobile and my co-worker has the Tmobile T989 on Tmobile. We both did a Speedtest side to side and we both got ~12Mbps down, ~1.3Mbps up. My phone was showing the 3g icon, while his was showing the 4g icon. Both our networks showed up as HSPA. Both of us in our respective stock, un-rooted ROMs.
While T-Mo roms do tend to be a bit over zelus with the 4G icon, it is much faster than a 3G connection. Where I live in Orlando is a 4G area and I get over 20mbs download speeds and over 2mbps upload speeds..
Side note though.. it is funny that people still use "" or call it 3.5G when the T-Mobile network has been accepted as 4G for almost a year now .. I tried to find the artical but its being illusive today..

Officially, 4G is supposed to get 1000mbs peak download. Tmobile uses HSPA+ which peaks at ~80mbs. I think that is why people call it 3.5G or use the "4G" when talking Tmobile.
