[Q] Cracked G2 screen? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I craked my G2's screen (Fell asleep on the couch with it in my pocket). It turns on and only displays 2 green lines. The cracks are on the bottom left side of the screen. I found a site with the screen for $59.99 and a digitizer for $46.19. I talked with TMO and they said it was not covered under warranty, no insurance. They gave me a decent price on a MT4G (13yr customer).
I would like to get the G2 fixed/sold. I am not sure if there is more damage since it does not boot, etc. Should I order the parts and try to fix it myself, or is there somewhere else to send it to for repair?
Thanks,
Eric

How much do you want for it as is ?

I would see if there is more wrong before buying parts to fix it.
Try to connect it to adb and see if it's recognized. That way you don't have to see anything on the screen
your PC will tell if it's communicating.
Sometimes you can shine a flash light up to a broken screen and see the home screen.
In those cases I would try to fix it myself. If not you may need to send it to HTC.

[Q] What exactly did I break/

I like taking my EVO on the bike trails to record the route, time, speed, etc...I have the phone in an Otterbox Defender inside my backpack.
Well yesterday I have a nice wreck and ate sh!t...long story short I damaged my phone.
It still works--the screen turns on, it rings when when calls come in, I can answer the call by doing the typical slide down motion. However, when the screen is on all I can see is a couple purple and yellow vertical lines on the right side of the screen. The glass part of the screen is still perfect but under the screen there are a couple light rays that come up from the corner...emits light as if it were cracked. All buttons on bottom light up too.
So what did I break? Should I claim it lost and sell it on ebay? Be ethical and claim it damaged? It is rooted but not sure if Asurion cares or would be able to tell with a jacked screen... When the EVO 3D comes out I will sell this new/refurb EVO but I guess that really doesn't make a difference
Claim it damaged, unroot, dont crash again.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Be ethical, unroot it, then see you sprint/claim agency to get a replacement.
not sure how to unroot if I can't see anything...its all black besides those purple and yellow lines.
Don't worry about unrooting it, if your doing an Assurion claim its insurance not warranty. I would go to a Sprint store first, they may swap it out on the spot or they'll tell you to contact Assurion. Get your $100 ready.

[Q] Good place to go if broken screen?

I've searched around a bit, anyone got some good recommendations for buying a replacement screen and a guide on how to do it?
Is this all you need for a cracked screen?

That's the digitizer only (the glass on top of your screen), if that is what you need then this should help:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC-Evo-4G-Teardown/2979/1
I found it really hard to remove, even after heating the glue holding the digitizer down, I replaced mine with a full housing with screen and digitizer already assembled. It's more expensive but much easier.
Or you could go to your local Sprint Repair Center and see what they can do for you.

If the screen still works but the grass is cracked then what do I need? What is the digitizer?

Look at the link I gave with the the tear down. That should explain it.
ETA: Basically, there is an LCD screen that displays the graphics, and overlaid on top of it is the digitizer that lets you interact with the LCD screen.
If you have insurance just take it to sprint and they will replace it for freeeee! If you don't sorry for taking up space.

No insurance!
insurance or not they could fix it for about $80, get your own digitizer and they might do it for labor only.
if a sprint store wont do it those other "cellphone" stores usually can but youre looking at $150-200
i bought 2 digitizers for $45 (1 wide cable 1 small cable) at a sprint store they changed it for me and took the other digitizer as payment.

Sprint store fixed mine for $35, no insurance. I was also rooted and they were like, we arent supposed to work on it if its rooted, so next time bring it in not rooted.
In addition, they replaced the whole front of my phone. Light leakage I had from below the buttons? Gone. Volume rocker a little creaky? Gone. Power button wear on the graphic? Gone. Small signs of wear on the side of the bezel? Gone. Hotspot on my LCD? Gone. It was worth the $35 for all that jazz, not to mention fixing my glass.
The replacement front they put on had a bad ear speaker, so I brought it back the next day, stock as can be. And they fixed that for free.
10 min later I was re-rooted and nandroid-backed-up back and rolling.
Definitely check with a sprint store first. I actually had to talk to two different people at different times to get them to admit that they could look at it (possibly first one was uninformed? Not sure).
I've taken my evo apart before. Removing the glass is a pain in the ass. I don't recommend it.
What you need is to just replace the LCD. It comes as a unit. If you look at your Evo, you will see a line completely around the sides. Dividing the "top" and "bottom". Popping off the battery cover and a few screws in the back and you will have the whole screen off in a minute. I personally haven't checked for replacement parts or the price of this LCD unit.
But IMO this will be the easiest and quickest way for you to do it.
Awesome, thanks a ton! It's for my brother. I will relay the message and post back with results.

Sending phone to sprint...

the screen is cracked. the water indicator has gone off, would it matter? I'm expecting to pay the $35 charge for the new screen but I'm not sure if they would care, any help would be appreciated

Some stores won't go by the water indicator. The main thing I personally check for would be any type of standing liquid on the board or any type of white or rusty corrosion visible. However, because the screen is a super AMOLED plus display, I can guarantee that the store won't be able to replace it because they wouldn't have the part. The only way you could get it replaced would be if you're lucky enough that the crack is less than an inch long. It would be $35 plus tax to have it exchanged if you meet the above criteria. If the crack is over an inch, it's a no-go on the exchange. And ALL is voided if there is corrosion on the board.
Good luck to you.
there isn't any other damage other than the screen. none of the other indicators went off and the phone still works its just the screen. the indicator above the capacitive buttons just barely went off and I have no idea why. the crack is worse that u mentioned.
am I basically hoping they have a spare E4GT to replace the screen?
That should be an insurance claim through Asurion, I doubt any Sprint store would repair the screen as it costs too much to fix, and I don't believe they'd simply replace the phone with one in stock.
Totally a Assurion claim, anything over a inch, and I know my store won't replace or exchange with anything in the stores inventory...I don't think our ASC will ever see the screens for these...just way to expensive, and it took us forever to start doing EVO $G's once we found a supplier...

what to do with phone now?

Hey guys I dropped my phone pretty hard yesterday, it doesnt appear that the outter glass cracked, but the screen stays completly black now, but if you look at it right you can see cracks that appear to be under the outter glass. I have seen the digitizer kits to fix lcd screens for about $150 so if i bought one of those would that fix my issue? im asking cause most the time i see that it fixes cracked lcds and like i said mine isnt cracked on the outter glass its cracked inside and the screen stays black, but i know its on because the bottom buttons light up and i get sound and vibration just fine. so would lcd digitizer replacement fix this?
If you have insurance, I'd utilize that.

I'm sure all phone insurances with sprint don't cover severe physical damaged caused by you..
If you have the insurance, replacing the entire device would cost $150 and save you the time and trouble of fixing it. By far the easiest option if you have it.
If not, it depends on your level of expertise with electronic repair. The LED screen and digitizer (touchscreen) are glued together on this phone, meaning you wuld have to have a good deal of patience and skill with a heat gun in order to pull the two apart. Your best bet might be searching for a digitizer and LED screen in one piece. I've seen them for $260-270 on eBay.
I'm a Sprint technician, so feel free to ask any other questions and I'll help if I can. Sorry about your luck with the phone, bud!

Screen not displaying anything at all

I know it turns on, it vibrates, and the notification light turns on and stuff, but the screen does absolutely nothing. The bottom buttons work fine. I dropped it on a tile floor screen first and it cracked, most of the crack being centralized in where the lcd ribbon is on the top left. The screen doesn't look cracked or anything. I tried opening it and reattaching the ribbon, but it didn't work. Any ideas on what could be wrong and how to fix it? Id rather not have to spend $300 for a whole new screen. Thanks

That screen is gone as you allready suspected. Take it to a service center or replace it yourself.
so nothing else could possibly be wrong with it? I just don't see how a cracked screen could do this
Go to the nearest Samsung repair center ,and pay 500 $ for it..Or replace it yourself but this means you'll lose the warranty.I feel sorry for you and for your N2..Why did'nt you bought a case?I actually have the Samsung Cover + and my dad dropped it .Nothing bad happened.
I called samsung and they said it would be $180 to fix it which seemed cheap but I don't know. I'll probably just sell it as is, buy a temporary phone, and wait for the s4 to come out. I had a case on it, but not the flip cover ones because they were annoying and didn't protect the sides at all. Plus this was a little more forceful than a regular drop.
