[Q] How to downgrade - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I made the mistake of upgarading to 1.83 =(
now i cant even temproot with visionary+
anyone help me out?
also, i have lots of apps installed, some which are games i have hours of progress in. is there any way i can get my root back ? other than downgrade?
and if downgrade is the only option, can i do it without even temproot? and how can i restore my apps alongwith their data ?
its a lot of questions, but i thought this is the best place for it =)

You are one of the first ones with 1.83 who want to downgrade, could you try my downgrade guide? You can find a link to it in the sticky roll up thread. It should work.

well i wouldnt want to downgrade, only thing is i cant root it. previously i was rooted with visionary (upto about 5 days ago when i made the stupid mistake). Is their an alternate method to root which works on 1.83 that i am not aware of ? (as you said i am the first one with 1.83 asking for it)
I already have your downgrade guide almost memorized, all the tools are downloaded etc. but i would appreciate if you could help me answer the remaining questions regarding apps and app data (game progress mainly)
there is mybackup pro, but it only takes apk+data if you are rooted. any ideas even just to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated. done a lot of research but still stumped =(

No, there is no way to root any of the latest firmwares, as things stand there is, as far as i know, no one working on root exploits on the latest firmwares because there is a straight forward method to downgrade. As regarding backup solutions i can't help you I'm afraid as I have root.

I know only my backup pro for backuping non-rooted phones. And that is right, there is no method to properly root new builds, you need to downgrade first.

So, could someone help me with rooting??

I've had my Evo for about 3 weeks now and am now wanting to root now that I see cyanogenmod is coming to Evo. I've rooted my Nexus and G1 with no problems but it seems the Evo is more difficult, what is the easiest way to root my Evo? And would someone be willing to help me with rooting it via IM or something similar?
There are tons of threads in the android development forum to show you how. Not to mention there was a one click root at some point if I am not mistaken, although I have no idea if it still works.

Yea, I've seen all of them and they all seem tedious compared to Nexus rooting. Which is the best method to go about rooting? I want to use Amon RA recovery if that helps. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me too.
Can anyone help?
Simple Root is 3 clicks & you're rooted & nand unlocked. Running win7 x64 & worked great for me.
I was reading up on it, do I need to uninstall HTC sync and the HTC drivers to get it to work??
I believe for unrevoked you need to remove those items ( the last time i checked at v2 ).
Versus Simple Root... I believe those are all required to get it to work.
What Version is your phone it would be much easier to know

Its 1.47.651.1 I'm going to try the 1 simple root method, but just have one question, am I supposed to have it on charge only or disk drive?
Charge-only
Awe crap, I forgot to put flash recovery, was I supposed to do that first or can I do that after step 1 or something???
Ok, so I got to part 4 and it just says starting part 2, thats it, it doesn't do anything more. Did I do something wrong, or....? Please help.
So could someone please help me???????
What method are u using? Try unrevoked 3, its very simple
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I had to do this after the using simple root method.

Thanks for replying guys, but I got it to work finally late last night. Anyways, I can't get wireless tether to work. It keeps force closing. I know I have root and everything because I was able to make a nand backup and I flashed Damagecontrol.

Unrevoked 1-click apk defeated in recent update?

My Evo is doing fine, but I was trying to help a friend root his yesterday and the Unrevoked 1-click apk didn't appear to be doing the trick. The only difference I can think of between our two phones is that I haven't downloaded the update that came this week. Has Sprint defeated this root method in the most recent patch?
Yes...they are up to UnrEVOked 3.

Right, this method requires you to use a PC though, right? I'm wondering if its still possible to root it using the unrevoked on-phone application, or has this been defeated? And if so, was the defeat in the most recent patch?
bump. I'm afraid the answer given is still a bit unclear to me. Can someone please clarify?
Make sure you are going to 'unrevoked.com/m' if you want to use it on your phone and avoid having to use the pc method. I forgot the /m when I first tried it and got pretty confused as well.

Yes, this is exactly what I did. The apk downloaded and installed, but didn't appear to gain root when I ran it. I ran it several times, but every time I attempted to run wifi tether, it would say that I wasn't root.
You can try downloading the Simple Root app from the development forum, Its only 4 clicks and its a legitimate full root. It does require the PC, but you seem to know how to use one of those as you got to this website.
Don't take shortcuts because your not sure what you're doing, learn

Thank you for the reply. I'll probably end up Simple Root for myself, but this is for a somewhat elderly friend of mine. He only needs root for wifi tether, since he can't get broadband where he lives (3g is okay). I figured the apk root method would be suitable for him since he would know how to uninstall it if he needed to claim is warranty or something. I won't be around to support his phone for him.
Anyway, thanks again. I'm still learning myself and appreciate the advice.
Ahh ok, he can always hit the wipe button and it will go back to a state good enough for the average sprint rep.
I Installed unrevoked 3by usb because i got last version 147.651.1. Its anyway to unroot and get back to stock rom. I tried different ways and nothing for example i wiped data, hard reset . etc.
Right now i dont have wifi is unable and that why i would like get back to stock. Also i use the method with htc sync and the ruu 132.651.1 andgive me error 171 then reintall the ruu give me error 140 and boot to the main screen/
Please any solution to get back to stock .
thanks in advanced,

Two Quick Questions...

Hey.. Long time HTC Vouge tweaker here... just got the evo and i love it.
I have three quick questions.
Can somone point me to a good thread that gives the lowdown on the basics of rooting and other stuff for the evo?
Second, I (stupidly) installed ota 2.2. I realize this is not rootable atm, but is there anyway to install a FPS fixed and or free WIFI kernel without rooting it?
If not is there anyway to do those things at all on a 2.2 OTA?
Thank
PS, what is the best backup utility out there now?

Those things all require root in order to do. The best backup utility is Titanium Backup, but it also requires root. As to a guide on rooting, they are specific to the software you are running. I would keep an eye out for the "Simple Root" which is an automated process. Once a 2.2 root is found they will create a program for it. It's only a matter of time before one of the devs have an ah ha moment.

You can't do any of those things without root. You can USB tether with programs like pdanet or easytether both found in the market.
Cool thanks for your help(s).
ILLEGAL PROCEDURE!!! The offence lined up in a 2 question formation but ran a 3 question play...LOL!!! Sorry but I could not resist...my bads.
hahaa I lold.

[Q] Desire z 1.72 - temp root -ti backup -possible ?

As I am new in this waters maybe my Q is stupid for experienced members and I apologize in advance.
Found successfully the downgrade process and files for rooting my model but somehow i got used to sense atm and going trough rooting and restoring to factory ROM isn t exactly the dream work for noob in Android.
Is there a way to make a decent backup of the phone without perm root ?
Any other use of temp root?
Answers or simple redirections to other similar posts welcome and thank you.
Alex
bump
anyone ?
Anyhing changed in the meantime for 1.72? I also do not need root all the time, so temproot could be fine, but I see no solution so far.
Is it possible to keep phone officially updated and do temproot when needed?

[Q] Newb needs help/explanation about how to root my MT3GS 2.2.1

ok, ok put the stones down....DOWN. yes Im a newb, but im not an idiot. I have spent the last hour tonight (as well as searching a few times over the last 2 weeks) searching, not just this site, for a way to Root my MT3GS. and apparently its currently impossible.
Yes I am aware of these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1181214
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108316
and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189485
however none of these fully explains anything and after reading all the replies in these threads it seems that theres conflicting comments, which are confusing me to no end. so Basically I have 3 questions:
Can I root my MT3GS what is currently running the OTA push of 2.2.1?
IS there a way to get S-Off working on it?
Can I Put any new Rom(could very well be using hte wrong word, if so it should be easy to understand what i mean) on the phone so that I can remove all unwanted stock apps, install any marketplace app I had before, and (drum roll please) get NETFLIX to work on my phone?
thank you in advance to anyone who can help me. but please, please please don't just refer me to another thread, because odds are A) I have read it and it didn't explain it well enough for me to understand and feel comfortable doing it, or B) it didn't provide the needed programs or only discussed part of my question and didn't seem to fit up with other threads which covered the other areas.
in short:
1- yes, you can root it. i've done it 3 times on my phone
2- as far as now, no, unless the new method posted today actually reverts the hboot
3- yes, although there might still be some apps that are on the rom that you do not want.
hey txdeathray, thanks for your reply. I found eckres original post on a different site that was much more elaborate, but from what i read still doesnt specify the S-off problem. last post: forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/28205-stuck-on-step-8-rooting/
SO basically, if I CANT get s-off working, then even if I put cm7 or whatever other version i find, as soon as I reboot my phone, it will undo everything I did and ill be stuck with 2.2.1 again.
Have you tried the unlockr.com way to do it? Their page has a vid following you thru the process.. id post the link but im mobile at the moment

Last I looked a couple days ago there was no way working method on unlockr. heck last week the only method involved goldcards, and my firned who rooted his droid refused to touch it.

No. You don't need S-OFF to keep a new ROM. And you won't lose root with S-ON.
To my understanding, you only need S-OFF if you want to be able to manage some things without having to reboot your phone into recovery, or to get to some system files you otherwise can't with S-ON.
I have not seen the need for S-OFF for my personal use of my phone.
