[Q] Change Defy 3G Frequency? - Defy General

Hello I live in New Zealand and we have a network here called Telecom XT which uses 3G freq: 850 & 2100 mhz.
Unfortunately all Motorola Defy sold here have their freq specified as: 3G Network: HSDPA 900 / 2100
I see in the development section there is a way to flash files to restore 3G coverage and one of the files has the 850 & 2100mhz that our Telecom XT network uses. Does this mean I can flash this file to enable those frequencies on this phone or does it mean that the Chinese versions of Defy have a different chip that supports the different frequency?

Hey,
Unless the Defy has a tri band WCDMA chip (which im pretty sure it doesn't) then you can't simply flash new radio firmware/RIL to enable frequencies.
If you want an XT compatible desire, your best bet is something from T-Mobile or more ideally Telstra Australia's NextG network, which is the same as XT. Mobicity for example sells NextG handsets which will work perfectly on XT.
If you have the 900mhz Defy i believe you are limited to Vodafone/2Degrees. Flashing these Radio/RIL fixes i think were because those with 850mhz handsets with issues running radios designed for 900mhz.

Just to confirm, Defy hardware can only do certain pairs of frequencies (e.g. as say mentioned on gsmarena.com) irrespective of what ROM is put on it ?
Is there anyway to find out (from model/serial number or other way) what hardware one has ? (for 3G frequency)
I'm pretty sure about mine, though I bought this Defy 2nd-hand and flashed it, so just wanted to be sure. (I flashed it with 900/2100 MHz ROM and it seems to work fine on T-Mobile 3G in London, UK. But wonder if there is a way to check - perhaps for another unit....)

Touch Pro UMTS 900-2100

I have an Australian released unlocked touch pro, and made a huge mistake- my network Telstra nextg is on 850 UMTS, and the released model is designed only to support 900-2100 UMTS. Does anyone know if i upgrade the radio as posted to quad band via flashing the rom if it will then allow my phone to access the 850 UMTS range or has the Ausie touch Pro been produced differently and may have a different antena and or chipset, which wont allow me to change it? If this is the case my phone is RS, i can still get edge though. Help 20times over.:

HTC DESIRE 8181 V's 8183 NEXT G DESIRE:

i found this on another forum. thought it be good for the confused ones thinking of buying. hope this explains a little better
So your looking to pick up a HTC Desire of eBay reasonably soon.
Is there any difference between Aus (delivered/imported 8181 Desires on eBay) vs NextG 8183 branded HTC Desires sold on eBay ?
because The NextG 8183 ones on eBay are currently fetching approx $100 more than none NextG 8181 Branded ones.
Q:
Is there any difference between Aus delivered/imported Desires (on eBay) vs NextG branded HTC Desires sold on eBay. From what I can tell they should all support the same frequency space, so there shouldnt be any difference.
A:
There are two different models of Desire....
Telstra sells one that supports UMTS 850/2100 The actual Telstra Next G branded ones have got some Telstra "Apps" loaded into the ROM which cannot be easily removed, however they are simply links to Telstra services. They are unlocked.
Models sourced overseas usually support UMTS 900/2100, which won't work on NextG.
Pick wisely.
Q:
The NextG Versions will still operate on Optus/Voda/etc right? The frequency ranges all seems to match up. Some online stores are selling NextG and none NextG versions, just dont want to shoot myself in the foot.
A:
Yes, the Next G version will work on Optus 3G, but only in metro areas. It does not support the 900 MHz frequency used by Optus or Voda in regional areas, meaning outside city, you'll only get 2G.
It does not support the 900 MHz frequency used by Optus or Voda in regional areas
Hmmm ok, thats weird because according to the HTC Site (and this is where im getting confused) with all the "Exclusive to Telstra NextG" Branding, it supports the following
HSPA/WCDMA:
* Australia: 850/2100 MHz
GSM:
* Australia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Q:
Do they cripple the NextG version and rip out the 900mhz ?
A:
Australia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Those are GSM frequencies, not UMTS.
To make it abundantly clear:
Telstra specs:
HSPA/WCDMA:
•Australia: 850/2100 MHz
GSM:
•Australia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Optus specs:
HSPA/WCDMA:
•Australia: 900/2100 MHz
GSM:
•Australia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G is around the world but Yes the US carrier At&T use it..
To help you, AT&T use the 850MHZ band while the other mobiles providers (ie T-Mobile) all use the 900 etc if you are grey importing a US phone the rule of thumb is if the phone works on AT&T then it will work on Telstra 3G network..
Telstra have two different 3G networks and they are 'branded' differently, yet they are both technically 3G at the end of the day.
1. Telstra 3G = 2100mhz, is only implemented in metropolian areas.
2. Telstra NextG = 850mhz, is implemented Australia wide and superceeds their 2100mhz implementation.
As you can see they are both 3G. The NextG branded product has more bandwith available to it, (not that 2100 doesn't have enough, just the way Telstra's implementation is).
Speed wise, telstra do have the fastest network, but in time, others will catch up. NextG is not some magical creative, even if Telstra subtly make you think that.
The issue with handsets is that they either come in 850/2100 variants (i.e compable on Telstra 850 3G) or 900/2100 variants (compatible with other networks in australia including the Telstra 3g branded service on the 2100 network).
Futher, this is not to be confused with similar GSM frequencies (then you get 2G coverage)
Q:
So is NextG just better coverage, or is it faster too? I was lead to believe there was a speed increase.
A:
Both.
The downside to having more coverage and web speed, is being stuck with Telstra..
If you have voda or Optus, you need the desire A8181.. if you're with Telstra you need the A8183
I have Optus meaning my phone model is A8181 & it's $100+ cheaper

This is well written explanation, I'm sure it/has helped many ;-)

Rural coverage for HTC Desire with 3 Mobile
I just want to clarify if the same is applicable with 3 Mobile as Voda have meraged. I'm a 3 customer and I'm moving to Trentham, Victoria. 3 and Voda have said there would be call and text coverage only in the area. 3 is bringing out the Desire later this month but I don't know which one. I've been told there's more Telstra towers in the area but will not swap suppliers as I have a good plan from when they were Orange. Thanx for the help.
If you get an 81 and use telstra, it will be slower.
if you get an 83 and use a Non-telstra network, it will be slower.
If you get an 83 on telstra, Root and grab T-Mod.
Simple! XD

Hi there.
I am confused. I am thinking of getting A8183 and am a vodafone user. Will 3g work for me?
I'm pretty sure it says above only in metro areas mate

vodafone going 850mHz
I have the 8183, rooted and running on LiveConnected (Optus). I have very little drama with mobile internet, regardless where I use my phone around Cairns.
I find I get drop outs if I venture too far west, but north to Pt Douglas/Mossman, inland to Atherton Tablelands/Millaa Millaa/Malanda and all the way south to Townsville (including Hinchinbrook region), signal is strong and on song.
I have never understood people that gripe about their 8183s not working properly on other networks...unless they happen to live in Oodnadatta, there should not be an issue.

[Q] T-Mobile & Desire Revolution HD/12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 Radio

Hi everyone,
Was wondering if anyone was having problems with the following setup:
- Desire HD running Android Revolution HD 5.1.7 (will update later)
- T-Mobile
- 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 Radio
Since flashing this radio/upgrading to this version of the Revolution HD rom about 10 days ago I've noticed a huge performance boost from the battery. However I think the radio is causing problems as I'm unable to send/receive MMS messages or have any 3G/HSDPA signal..
I've been over in Canada and noticed I was unable to get 3G speeds and was always stuck on Edge. I put this down to being in another country and Fido said I had the European version of the phone which wasn't compatible with their data network. I was a bit surprised because I figured the phone was compatible with all frequencies (as covered on the Tech Specs page of htc.com)but I'm not sure whether that lists the frequencies for say the "European" version of the phone *and* the "North American" version of the phone..
HSPA Frequencies in Europe (PCS): 900 / 2100
HSPA Frequencies in North America (PCS): 850 / 1900
The Telus DHD and Inspire 4G are the exact same device internally, the only difference is the "AT&T" in chrome on the metal housing rather than "HTC" on it for the Inspire 4G.
Every other DHD will not support north american bands, thats why you're limited to EDGE, since its the highest GSM gets (which supports the north american frequencies since that radio controller is quadband)
Not only that, but apn settings need to be entered for any data to work correctly (even if the frequencies are supported)
The general HTC Webpage shows the European/Asian frequency support of the phone, unless you choose a north american portal (US/Can)

Thanks for the response.
..Just realised I forgot to finish the post! (I'm blaming Jetlag).
..Anyway I got back to the UK on Thursday and have been unable to get 3G/MMS since I returned. I've walked all around the city today and at no point have I got anything other than Edge or GPRS coverage.
I've checked all the APN settings etc and all is fine.

[Q] Desire Z: Can I switch to N. American 3G Bands?

OK...the Desire Z only supports 900 and 2100 MHz which is European and Asian 3G bands. Is there any way that it can be made to operate on any North American 3G bands (like 850, 1700/2100, or 1900) or the issue is entirely hardware related, in which case nothing can be done. I should note that the phone has already been upgraded to 2.3.3 so the rooting options are rather limited.
Any contribution will be highly appreciated!!!
Its hardware limited to the bands you have. My understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that with that device (if it is unlocked) you will be able to use a T-mobile SIM to get 3G in the US. I'm not 100% sure with this though, as I don't think the DZ has 1700mhz which is needed for T-mobile.
You don't have the correct bands for AT&T 3G. There is a Canadian version of the DZ that will work on AT&T in the US on 850/1900, however.
The device is completely unlocked and unbranded but its specifications clearly state that its 3G frequencies are 900 and 2100.T-Mobile's 3G is 1700/2100 (together) and it's different from the European 2100. Unless the North American bands can be activated via a secret menu, or by flashing a different radio (impossible with 2.3.4), the phone, as is, can't connect to American 3G networks...only GSM 850 and 1900.
So, a miraculous secret menu appears to be my only hope, which, of course, is impossible to implement if the hardware doesn't support it!
Thanks for your concern!
Well, with you phone, you can use only half of tmo's 3g service since they reserve one band for uploads and the other band for downloads. So technically you kinda get 3g, but just 1 way.
Sent from my Desire Z via XDA App
I'm afraid that i can't do that either because the TMO's 2100 3G frequency spectrum is not the same as the European one!
I think I'll exchange it with a friend's European Nexus S which is tri-band 3G and, besides 900 and 2100, it supports TMO's 1700/2100 band! It is an excellent phone but I slightly prefer the metal and the weight of the Desire Z despite the fact that I do not particularly care about the physical keyboard!
Thanks anyway guys!

yea. i think mputtr brought up the correct point. The way T-mo uses 3G is 1700 and 2100 separately for down/up, so like you said its different than the Euro 2100 spectrum.
Sorry it didn't work out.

UMI X2 and T-Mobile 3G

I purchased the newly released UMI X2 Android phone. I am unable to use the TMobile 3G network. I am only able to use 2G/EDGE.
Voice and data quality are very bad, almost the phone is unusable. I spoke with T-Mobile and was informed that my modem does not support 1700 MHz and there are effort to re-farm TMobile network to support 3G on 1900Mhz but not set date yet. When I scan for available network I get three networks were available
T-Mobile 2G
AT&T 3G
AT&T 2G
Operating System: Android 4.2.1 OS
Processor: 1.2GHz MTK MT6589 quad-core processor
Connectivity Technology: GSM network & WCDMA - Standard SIM card
Network Band: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz & WCDMA 850/2100MHz
Data Technology: GPRS, EDGE, HSPA
Baseband version
MOlY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V2.P1
I would appreciate any help to get my phone to work on 3G.

Did you make any progress with this? I recently purchased UMI X2, for use with T-Mobile UK. But have the same problem of not being able to connect to 3G networks - it works okay on 2G/EDGE.
I know the phone supports 3G on 2100MHz, and there's been some debate whether it supports 850/900MHz as well, but I've not found a definitive answer to that.
There's an operator in the UK (Hutchinson 3G UK Ltd) that only have a license for 2100MHz. So I was expecting the phone to work fine on their network- but no go... phone won't register on network at all - even though it shows in the available networks list.
I'm now searching to see if anyone else has been having problems - as it's beginning to look like faulty phone hardware - rather than trying to use unsupported frequencies...
acid meaand
I am still in the same situation, I am unable to use the 3G network for T-Mobile.
I am looking into getting 4G Wireless Hotspot modem $50 from the same carrier, use my SIM card on the modem, and use my UMI X2 as pure IP phone. There are many issues, but it looks promising.
Please keep me updated with any progress you make.
Regards;
I have the same problem...
I have this same problem with a operator here in Brazil. Every 3G operator in Brazil, using 2.1GHz band, works fine except one: VIVO.
I can see the network when I click on "manual search", but the phone can't connect. My baseband is:
moly.wr8.w1248.md.wg.mp.v7.p1 2013/04/10 00:39
How can change this baseband to another? I tried to update firmware but unfortunately the newest firmware has the same baseband version.
firmware update will not solve the problem
Firmware update will not solve the problem. Until the manufacture identifies the problem and provides a solution, the problem is outstanding.
Beside the hardware has to be compatible and can support more frequencies which no one can confirm for the UMI or any other chines unlocked phones.
But, this is just my humble opinion.
I Found a solution (at least for me)
I think I found a solution for my problem. I flashed this very new (2013/07/17) rom, with a new baseband MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V7.F2.P1, 2013/07/10 23:14 that corrects 3G dropouts and disconnects. Now my 3g works find, with H and sometimes H+. Fast and reliable like it should be. The link for this new ROM is:
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/umi-x2-based-official-for-europeus/
Thanks for the update.
I have two questions.
1- There are two files in the link you provided UMI-X2-basedon_Official_250613.zip and UPDATE_UMI-X2-THB-ROM-based_on_Official_170713.zip. Which do use?
2- You mentioned the updated corrected 3G dropouts and disconnects, but do you know if the update have these frequencies to get 3G?
3G (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz)
HSPA+ 42
P.S
GSM/EDGE/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) original specs

I used the file UPDATE_UMI-X2-THB-ROM-based_on_Official_170713.zip. It was based on the Official ROM from 07/17/2013, but I was unable to find the official stock version. This version has a very new bandbase that, supposedly, fixed the problem with 3G on some operators.
3G on Brazil is on 2100 MHz, sometimes on 850MHz but in my case the problem was on 2.1GHz band. Three WCDMA operators in Brazil, all in the same 2.1GHz frequency, work fine, but VIVO doesn't. Now, with the new rom, it works with no drop outs for over a day now.
no changes or additional frequencies
I successfully applied the update but no changes or additional frequencies
I have serious issues with HSDPA, t-mobile uk works but only on GPRS and it keeps dropping out. GiffGaff seems to work without dropping out. It has worked for a minute on HSDPA today but only once. Other than that t-mobile has been dropping out badly. GPRS works for a bit then it drops out. I have took an MTK modem log with MobileUncle Tools to see what it says but haven't looked at it yet. Trying to work out if it is a hardware issue or Baseband.
I get this from my X2 Radio Logcat:

Hi,
do you have a description and a photo of how you did it?
How long the Cu wire has to be? And where to connect it?
Many thanks in advance.
