UMI X2 and T-Mobile 3G - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I purchased the newly released UMI X2 Android phone. I am unable to use the TMobile 3G network. I am only able to use 2G/EDGE.
Voice and data quality are very bad, almost the phone is unusable. I spoke with T-Mobile and was informed that my modem does not support 1700 MHz and there are effort to re-farm TMobile network to support 3G on 1900Mhz but not set date yet. When I scan for available network I get three networks were available
T-Mobile 2G
AT&T 3G
AT&T 2G
Operating System: Android 4.2.1 OS
Processor: 1.2GHz MTK MT6589 quad-core processor
Connectivity Technology: GSM network & WCDMA - Standard SIM card
Network Band: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz & WCDMA 850/2100MHz
Data Technology: GPRS, EDGE, HSPA
Baseband version
MOlY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V2.P1
I would appreciate any help to get my phone to work on 3G.

Did you make any progress with this? I recently purchased UMI X2, for use with T-Mobile UK. But have the same problem of not being able to connect to 3G networks - it works okay on 2G/EDGE.
I know the phone supports 3G on 2100MHz, and there's been some debate whether it supports 850/900MHz as well, but I've not found a definitive answer to that.
There's an operator in the UK (Hutchinson 3G UK Ltd) that only have a license for 2100MHz. So I was expecting the phone to work fine on their network- but no go... phone won't register on network at all - even though it shows in the available networks list.
I'm now searching to see if anyone else has been having problems - as it's beginning to look like faulty phone hardware - rather than trying to use unsupported frequencies...

acid meaand
I am still in the same situation, I am unable to use the 3G network for T-Mobile.
I am looking into getting 4G Wireless Hotspot modem $50 from the same carrier, use my SIM card on the modem, and use my UMI X2 as pure IP phone. There are many issues, but it looks promising.
Please keep me updated with any progress you make.
Regards;

I have the same problem...
I have this same problem with a operator here in Brazil. Every 3G operator in Brazil, using 2.1GHz band, works fine except one: VIVO.
I can see the network when I click on "manual search", but the phone can't connect. My baseband is:
moly.wr8.w1248.md.wg.mp.v7.p1 2013/04/10 00:39
How can change this baseband to another? I tried to update firmware but unfortunately the newest firmware has the same baseband version.

firmware update will not solve the problem
Firmware update will not solve the problem. Until the manufacture identifies the problem and provides a solution, the problem is outstanding.
Beside the hardware has to be compatible and can support more frequencies which no one can confirm for the UMI or any other chines unlocked phones.
But, this is just my humble opinion.

I Found a solution (at least for me)
I think I found a solution for my problem. I flashed this very new (2013/07/17) rom, with a new baseband MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V7.F2.P1, 2013/07/10 23:14 that corrects 3G dropouts and disconnects. Now my 3g works find, with H and sometimes H+. Fast and reliable like it should be. The link for this new ROM is:
http://www.needrom.com/mobile/umi-x2-based-official-for-europeus/

Thanks for the update.
I have two questions.
1- There are two files in the link you provided UMI-X2-basedon_Official_250613.zip and UPDATE_UMI-X2-THB-ROM-based_on_Official_170713.zip. Which do use?
2- You mentioned the updated corrected 3G dropouts and disconnects, but do you know if the update have these frequencies to get 3G?
3G (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz)
HSPA+ 42
P.S
GSM/EDGE/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) original specs

I used the file UPDATE_UMI-X2-THB-ROM-based_on_Official_170713.zip. It was based on the Official ROM from 07/17/2013, but I was unable to find the official stock version. This version has a very new bandbase that, supposedly, fixed the problem with 3G on some operators.
3G on Brazil is on 2100 MHz, sometimes on 850MHz but in my case the problem was on 2.1GHz band. Three WCDMA operators in Brazil, all in the same 2.1GHz frequency, work fine, but VIVO doesn't. Now, with the new rom, it works with no drop outs for over a day now.

no changes or additional frequencies
I successfully applied the update but no changes or additional frequencies

I have serious issues with HSDPA, t-mobile uk works but only on GPRS and it keeps dropping out. GiffGaff seems to work without dropping out. It has worked for a minute on HSDPA today but only once. Other than that t-mobile has been dropping out badly. GPRS works for a bit then it drops out. I have took an MTK modem log with MobileUncle Tools to see what it says but haven't looked at it yet. Trying to work out if it is a hardware issue or Baseband.

I get this from my X2 Radio Logcat:

Hi,
do you have a description and a photo of how you did it?
How long the Cu wire has to be? And where to connect it?
Many thanks in advance.

[Q] Is it possible to Flash G2's 3G Radio, an set it to work on 900/2100 mhz??

Well, it's just as the title of this thread says... I have a Tmobile's G2 (A.K.A. HTC Vision), which its 3g default bands are under 1700 / 2100. Here on my country, all the providers have their 3g services on 900 / 2100.... soo... Is it possible to Flash T-mobile G2's Radio, an set it to work on 3g 900/2100 mhz, so I can use the phone on 3G, instead of that annoying and extremely slow EDGE??
Or, is there a Custom ROM that has these settings on it? (I mean, a rom that automatically turns the 3g band to 900 instead of 1700)
Thanx.
No you can't, the radio bands are set in hardware (e.g. the physical antennae in the phone), not just in the radio software.
Why would you need to, the phone would use the 2100 band for it's 3G in your country? I took mine to Russia and it worked fine.
I don't think it's that simple. I only get edge on my T-mobile G2 using the Rogers network.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA app.
Rogers doesnt use 1700 or 2100 so that is to be expected. The original posters country has a 2100 3G, I would suspect he just isn't in a coverage area.

I don't think it works like that, I think it needs both bands to work. If it was that simple then surely they wouldn't bother making different phones for different markets (e.g. T-Mobile US vs Europe/Asia)
That may be...I'm only speaking of my experience in Russia, they have 2100 only 3G and mine worked without the second band.
Just to add, T-Mobile US use the 1700 MHz band for the uplink, and 2100 MHz for the downlink. So presumably the phones (i.e. G2, as opposed to the Desire Z) are physically setup like that too.
Oh I thought Rogers uses 2100. Either way, no worky.... sad.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA app.
Ah, I think I'm following you, because Russia exclusively uses 2100 for up and down my phone worked, but since his county has a seperate uplink and a downlink band it won't?

Yeah I think that's it. I don't know *that* much about this myself, just picked up on a few discussions about the G2/DZ on here over time.
Have a look at this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
I think the "problem" is that the G2 uses exclusively "Band IV" for 3G (i.e. 1700/2100 split), but somewhere like the OP's Dominican Republic uses Band VIII (900).
What the OP needs is a Desire Z, which operates on Band I (2100) and Band VIII (900).
Russia appears to use Band I (2100) as well. Maybe a G2 can partially work there then ?
Rogers uses something else, Band II (1900) and Band V (850).
As I say, I'm don't know that much about this myself, so if anyone else can help clarify/confirm/deny, then that'd be great.
Much appreciated.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA app.
Via Google, I dug up another interesting piece of info.
Although it's not on HTC's official spec list on their site, on T-Mobile's support pages it says that the G2 does Band I as well. Which would explain how it would have worked in Russia. That's not going to help the OP's problem though.
http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24233.xml?&A2L.SERVICE=FeatureSummary
Wow mega confusing, but you helped clear it up, thanks!!
Mine worked very well in Moscow, I was pleasantly suprised, it was kind of a bonus to be able to get on the web, I wasn't expecting much.
I don't understand why the manufactures don't provide phones with penta-band 3G support like the Nokia N8. Maximize profit when producing 2-3 same phones with different frequencies maybe? I mean quad-band GSM has been supported for pretty much all of the current phones, why not 3G bands as well?
Has anyone tried this option?
bring up the dial pad and dial
*#*#info#*#* (aka *#*#4636#*#*)
press "Phone Info"
you'll get the screen with the imei, phone no, network and a button that says "Run Ping Test" at the top
press your "menu" button
when the menu pops up, it'll have 6 options, select radio band, view sim address book, view fixed dialling numbers, view service dialling numbers, get PDP list, and More.
Choose the first one "Select Radio Band" then select the appropriate band.
Not sure if it helps in this situation, but I found it in a thread about gaining 3G in Europe on the N1
hey bro.. I read from one topic in TMo's official G2 forum that the G2 will work on a country with only a UMTS band of 2100 both for up and down (the answer is from TMo employee, an engineer)... hope you'll be enlightened. I bought an unlocked G2 and I researched extensively before purchase. Im from the Philippines which only supports the 2100 band for 3G. I Know and Im 100% positive that the phone will support the 3G band here in my country. cant wait for my G2 (arriving tomorrow)
btw... coverage is vital. if the 3G signal is weak or non-existent in your area, you'll be switched to edge for data on your phone (naturally).. good luck
sorry.. cant post the link. would've loved to have posted it.

That's the Band I thing that I was talking about, that T-Mo shows on their spec sheets (but HTC doesn't seem to list, for some reason).
I think the G2 will do 3G if any one of the two bands are supported by the country. Correct me if Im wrong

There is nowhere in the world that uses 2100 in both directions. Band 1 is 1900 UP, 2100 DOWN.
In all cases, your phone must be able to upload on the frequencies that the towers listen on, and download on the frequencies that the towers transmit on.
I.e., north america vision transmits on 1700 or 1900, receives on 2100.

[Q] Change Defy 3G Frequency?

Hello I live in New Zealand and we have a network here called Telecom XT which uses 3G freq: 850 & 2100 mhz.
Unfortunately all Motorola Defy sold here have their freq specified as: 3G Network: HSDPA 900 / 2100
I see in the development section there is a way to flash files to restore 3G coverage and one of the files has the 850 & 2100mhz that our Telecom XT network uses. Does this mean I can flash this file to enable those frequencies on this phone or does it mean that the Chinese versions of Defy have a different chip that supports the different frequency?
Hey,
Unless the Defy has a tri band WCDMA chip (which im pretty sure it doesn't) then you can't simply flash new radio firmware/RIL to enable frequencies.
If you want an XT compatible desire, your best bet is something from T-Mobile or more ideally Telstra Australia's NextG network, which is the same as XT. Mobicity for example sells NextG handsets which will work perfectly on XT.
If you have the 900mhz Defy i believe you are limited to Vodafone/2Degrees. Flashing these Radio/RIL fixes i think were because those with 850mhz handsets with issues running radios designed for 900mhz.
Just to confirm, Defy hardware can only do certain pairs of frequencies (e.g. as say mentioned on gsmarena.com) irrespective of what ROM is put on it ?
Is there anyway to find out (from model/serial number or other way) what hardware one has ? (for 3G frequency)
I'm pretty sure about mine, though I bought this Defy 2nd-hand and flashed it, so just wanted to be sure. (I flashed it with 900/2100 MHz ROM and it seems to work fine on T-Mobile 3G in London, UK. But wonder if there is a way to check - perhaps for another unit....)

[Q] LG G pro 3G issues

I have Korean LG G Pro F240L
everything works alright except that it doesn't fully use it's 3g capabilities
I live in an area where 3G signal is not that stable, usually 2-4 bars, signal can drop for a few seconds every now and then, I use telstra in Australia, which use 850Mhz/2100Mhz 3G network (850 in most areas, 2100 only for extra coverage)
I set the network preference as Auto, the trouble is that most of the time the phone sticks to 2G/GPRS with small icon on the top showing "G",
and if I want to use 3g I have to go to the network setting and change it from auto to "WCDMA only", the network will change to 3g (icon on top showing 3g) with signal strength about 2-4 bars
obviously with unstable 3g signals I can't keep it "WCDMA only" all the time, so I have to change it back to auto.
once it's in auto the phone will not revert to GPRS straightaway, it will keep going with 3g for a while and then if there is a drop of 3g signal it will then change to 2g/gprs and stay that way.
is there anyway to set the phone in "3g preferred" state where 3g is utilized automaticly whenever the internet is needed? (as far as I know, no such option exists).
do you have any trouble with your 3g settings? please share, thanks
I have discovered something new
in the hidden menu-WCDMA service menu-GSM/WCDMA band, when you click on WCDMA 1900 and WCDMA 2100, it shows success, whereas when you click on WCDMA 850 it displays fail
it seems that the phone is not using the stable 850 band at all, rather it relies on the 2100 band, this explains the erratic signal strength
I did a bit more digging
the band frequency for korean providers are
SK (S) 2G (CDMA) 800, 3G (UMTS/HSPA) 2100, 4G (LTE) 850/1800
LG U+ (L) no 2G, 3G (CDMA/EVDO)1800, 4G (LTE) 850/2100
KT (K) no 2G, 3G (UMTS/HSPA) 2100, 4G (LTE) 850/900/1800
also
telstra 2G (GSM/EDGE) 900/1800, 2G (UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA) 850 (main 99% population) /2100 (minor), 4G (LTE) 1800
AT&T (E980) 2G(GSM/GPRS/EDGE) 850/1900, 3G(UMTS/HSPA) 850/1900
strange that there doesn't seem to be direct connection/conflict between telstra bands and the LG U+ bands, i.e. if my F240L is able to use GSM and WCDMA 2100, why not WCDMA 850
I believe G pro is a global phone that supports all communication standards
I am unsure about the root of the problem, is it the matter of settings (i.e. can be solved by tweaking the service menu), or the problem of incompatible radio (hence can be solved by flashing appropriate radio)
also is there anyway to tell the band frequency the phone is using? I did my search and nothing yielded, I believe there is no such solution
my question comes down to how to enable/unlock 850 band on this phone?
If you use AT&T and have a korean phone, do you have similar problem? (as shown above AT&T partly relies on 850 band as well)
also if i guess right the problem is not limited to LG G Pro, any LG Korean phone potentially will have similar issues, I tried search optimus G forum but nothing turned up.
Same problem, korean phone wrong band

I have since learned that basebands are all hardware encoded, at least for LG phones, and there is no way to enable WCDMA 850 band if it is not originally supported by the phone, flashing the radio will not change the hardware capability of the phone
The Korean LG G pro supports only
2G : 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G : 900/2100 MHz
4G, LTE: F240K - 900/1800 MHz (Band 8 & 3) F240S - 850/1800 MHz (Band 5 & 3), F240L - 850/2100 MHz (Band 5 & 1)

Unstable/Weak phone signals
Singles on my korean LG G Pro are very unstable and after every few minutes my phone shows "Emergency calls only" with an empty signal bar and then suddenly gets full signal back with in few seconds.
I am using custom Android 4.1.2
Same time my signals on my Xperia Z phone with same network remains stable at same place.
Is it a software issues ??

[Q] LG G3 D855 4G LTE issues on T-Mobile USA

Hello everyone,
I just got my LG G3 today and I'm encountering an issue getting 4G LTE on my D855 (international version) on the T-Mobile US network. I looked around and searched the forums to find a solution to this 4G LTE problem specific to this phone. I tried going into the hidden menu (3485#*855#) and changing the bands and such, nothing works. I haven't rooted my phone or flashed anything yet, as I haven't found any tutorial in which doing so would resolve this issue for this specific model.
I do get HSPA on it, which gives me about 7mbps, much slower than I anticipated.
Does it mean that I won't get 4G LTE at all? I will be in Hong Kong for a few months and was wondering if I would get 4G LTE there on T-Mobile using this phone since it's the international version and they do offer 4G LTE over there. Anyone know if it works over there?
If there are no solutions, I might just sell the phone and get a different model that works.
I'm located in Southern California if that helps anyone.
@darkelfx, you need to check which LTE bands that model runs off of, and see if T-Mobile uses those. I work for tmo, and we did a lot of work on our network to make it more compatible with unlocked devices, however, I know that since there is a difference in the bands att uses, their devices do not pick up our LTE 90% of the time. They get HSPA+, just like you do.
These are the bands being used and my version is the international version (not the AT&T version).
2G Network: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network: HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network: LTE 700 / 800 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2300 / 2600
I do not get HSDPA+, I get the slower 3G speed, which is HSDPA.

for 3g you need to have 1700mhz as well
for 4g they use a combo 1700/2100 or AWS is the nickname.
Sorry to say but the D855 is NOT compatible with any U.S. LTE bands.

Yeah, I found this out as well researching the G3 before buying any of the variants for use on Tmo. None of the variants, outside of the 851, will work on Tmo's LTE. You'll get voice and 3G (HSPA), but not LTE connections with TMo.
As for getting LTE in HK, it won't be on Tmo's network, as Tmo does not have any networks in HK. You might get data roaming and all, but I haven't looked too much into that as I don't do much international travel. You would connect under a roaming partner there, if there are any under agreement.
Or you could swap in another SIM for use in HK.
This worked for me.
I had exactly the same problem.
Watch this video on YouTube for the G2, follow the instructions and it will work.

Hi, I use LG G3 D855 and looking for solution to get LTE on T-Mobile USA. After some research inside the forum, I decided to try to use CyanogenMod (CM 12.1) on my system.
It works well and now I can enjoy LTE on T-Mobile network, even though not pretty stable yet, but I am good with that since the OS still ongoing development.
You can try to download the OS on Cyanogen official website, and use the latest update available.
In order to confirm if you get LTE signal, beside check on your LTE sign, you can use LTE Discovery apps whenever you lost LTE connection and try to reconnect on an LTE signal.
Oh, forgot to mention, I am located in College Station, TX.

LG G3: a big problem with 4G

Hi, i have a big problem with my LG G3 bought on january of this year. the version is the D855, italian warranty (as i am italian). from the moment which i put my SIM into the cell phone i noticed that it doesn't connect to 4G network (as just it found a 4G connectivity it started to search another network till it'd have found a 3G/H+ connectivity), delivered twice to the customer service (so i staied two months without mobile), LG wasn't able to solve the issue said that their test on the network was all right, now i found the only one provider that works with my device (i'm talking about H3G, before, when i bought it, i had Vodafone, but i have tried Wind and Tim though), but now i want to change it because it costs an arm and a leg, and i want to solve this problem by myself (as LG do nothing to solve it) and it seems there is no one with my same issue in the world wide, so what it would be a probably solution??? ask for other infos if you need!!!

If LG found nothing wrong with your device, and and only one operator has 4G working on that phone, it means that your phone doesn't support the bands other carriers are offering.
LTE bands for this phone (855) are 700 Mhz,800 Mhz, 900Mhz, 1800 Mhz, 2100Mhz, 2300 Mhz and 2600 Mhz.
Also, worth noticing is that the coverage differs from carrier to carrier.

i don't think that the problem is that, here are the LTE bands of the main italian carriers (included H3G):
-Telecom Italia: 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz;
-Vodafone Italia: 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz;
-Wind Telecomunicazioni: 800 MHz, 2600 MHz;
-H3G (3 Italia): 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz.
i have tried each one of these but the only one that works is H3G indeed and besides is the only one that doesn't own the 800 MHz band, so maybe the problem is that my mobile is not able to connect on this band (although it is available as you mentioned in your specs ). so is there a solution? p.s. on my old G2 work all four of them so it is undeniable that my G3 has a problem, i want just know if this problem is resolvable by myself and how!
whatever thank you for the help
