[Q] Line on all pics: broken lens? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed this week that I've got a line showing on all my new pictures. I've attached an example.
I remember my phone had fallen on thick carpet a few weeks ago and it may be linked to that fall.
So I'm wondering if the lens is broken.
What is weird is that when I do the focus for my picture the image is perfect, no line at all. And when the picture is taken this line appears. Are the image showed while you prepare the picture and the picture taken by 2 different lenses?
I've wiped the glass that's in front of the lens and checked whether I saw some kind of breakage but I don't see any (which doesn't mean it's not broken).
I've also tried taking a picture with another application and it also shows that line.
Do you think my lens is broken? And why does the line appear only once the picture has been taken?
Thanks

It could be that a line of the CCD is not functioning correctly, you might not be able to see it when focusing your phone because the image is higher resolution than the screen itself. I'm by no means an expert though, so I could easily be wrong.

Does the line always appear in the same place? It could be a CCD issue like mentioned above. Also, look through your gallery and see what date the line started, and try to correlate it to a specific event (you mentioned the fall). Something else you can try, though I don't know if it will help much, but backup your SD card to your computer and reformat it. It could be an issue with saving. Does the line appear when you look at it through Gallery or only when you blow it up on the PC? Or do you see the line in Gallery when you zoom in on the pic?
Do you have a video recorder on your phone? If you do, record a clip and see if the line appears. Try to view it on the phone and the computer
Other than that, I don't know of anything else other than a warranty replacement. Looking at the line I'm leaning more towards hardware damage, but I can be incorrect.

Thanks guys!

Yes the line always appear at the same place. I had already checked the date the line first appeared. The problem is I don't take pictures very often so I just know it appeared between mid-January and last week and that in between my phone fell on the carpet
I can see the line both in the Gallery (with or without zooming) and on the PC.
Interesting: I have recorded a video as you suggested and I can see no line. What's the difference between the way the camera and the video recorder work?
I will try formatting the SD card in a few days if I don't find any solution but like you I have the feeling this is a problem with hardware.

Definitely a dead row of pixels in the CCD. This ought to be a warranty issue, if your phone is still new enough.
It may not show up in videos, or in downscaled photos (i.e. if you set your camera to smaller resolutions) because of the way the image is processed, combining information from multiple rows of pixels essentially 'blurring out' the bad information. I presume you will only notice this when recording the highest camera resolution.
Sorry for the bad news. I think there is no cure except replacement.

BUt if there was a dead row of Pixed, then wouldnt it appear while focusing or constantly when the phone is running a game or something?

Negative. The CCD would only be used for the digital imaging, not for the display of the actual phone. Which is why it only affects captured images. A way to test it, download "ShootMe" from the market and take a screen shot. No lines.

The line is probably still there, but because of the recording quality it may not be rendering in the captured video. I'm sure if you recorded 720p you may be able to see a faint detection of the line, since it doesn't look too major in the still shots.

I'm leaning with this guy. Just forget to mention the whole "oops I dropped it" mess. And make sure that you keep it stock (I know your signature says that you're running stock, but how often do we update signatures anymore). Other than that it should be covered under warranty replacement, seeing how it hasn't been out for over a year yet (wasn't the DZ released like 1 Nov 2010?).

Thanks everyone!
I've justed tested video recording in 720p and I don't see the line.
I'm not rooted yet as I'm with 1.72 version and I would have to downgrade etc. so it won't be any problem to bring my phone back But this means I can't install Shootme and make the test either.
I am going to contact HTC to see how I can have my phone repaired or replaced. Hope there's a way to fix the problem easily and rapidly as I can't imagine having to go back to my HD2 for several weeks

Did you try a hard reset?

No, I haven't tried. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fix the issue and as I wouldn't have the time for restoring everything (I can't use Titanium Backup) I prefer not doing a factory reset.
I've asked HTC how I can have my phone repaired: I would have to send my phone to a repair center which isn't a solution that fits me.
They also suggested to try starting in safe mode. I've followed their instructions (Check that the phone is turned off. Then turn it on. When you see the HTC logo press Volume Down button until phone vibrates.). But all I have is the bootloader and it doesn't propose safe mode
I've googled and searched on the forum to find a way to launch that safe mode but haven't found the solution for the moment ...

Camera freeze after 3 pictures taken. EVERYTIME!

My Camera locks up after taking 3 pictures. Just freezes on the finished photo and I have to tap home multiple times to get out of the camera then I start the camera up again and it just displays a black screen. So then I have to exit out of it again and open it to get it to take 3 more pictures. Storage is set to the SD card.
Sorry to hear the man. I have been using the camera quite a bit and havent had 1 issue with the camera or behavior as you explained.
Try a different SD card or even format the card as a test and try again. If not next clear/wipe the phone for poss software issue. If not it maybe hardware, remember you have your manufacture warranty from the store if you need it p
yea, that's a bummer. No issues here either.
You can try the formatting of the SD card, or you can simply change the setting to make it so that images are stored on internal storage to see if that makes a difference. If it's already set to store on internal storage, then change it to the storage card. One or the other may be bad.
Doesn't really makes sense that it only happens after snapping a few shots though.
Good luck.
I have had this happen too. I cant use the home button to get out though, I have to lock the phone for about 30 seconds, and when I unlock, it sometimes is ready to take a picture. I have switched my camera down to 5mp to see if it helps, and it did a little, but it still happens. I also had my camera set to internal storage.
Changed to internal storage again and its working so far. Saw another post on the Verizon boards saying the fixed the issue by switching form internal to SD card storage.
This is still happening even after its been switched to internal storage.
I have the same problem, but intermittently

Anyone report this to HTC directly? On my winmo phones, they were MORE than helpful; basically the definition of excellent customer service.
Forums only go so far, ya know?
I have had the same problem off and on, once I use task killer It runs ok again. It can be quite frustrating when you only have a limited amount of time to take a pic. Kids, pets, etc dont exactly stay in the same place for very long LOL. I assumed it was caused by some stupid app I downloaded
FIXED
Fixed ( I think) got a response to the same post on the Verizon forum from an employee.
Factory reset (i know big pain). I guess the camera app/driver was corrupted and factory reset reloads a fresh build of the camera.
Tried it and i snapped about 15 shots rapid fire no problems.
I said that 2nd post from the top lmao

Well it didn't work. The camera app locks up randomly now when taking pictures.
It gets worse when i adjust the settings on the camera.
Same problem here. Factory reset did not help.

Camera crashed. Lost everything.

I'm so mad right now.
My camera app crashed even after several reboots forcing a Hard reset.
I lost all my data and the camera app still crashes.
I can't describe how mad I am.
I press the camera button and it shows for a sec. It then immediately returns to the home screen.
I'm gonna contact Microsoft first thing in the morning.
I might lose a job because of this.
The hard reset didn't fix anything. It still crashes .
Can someone link me the he fastest way to get to Microsoft to help me fix this stuff.
I'm seriously going insane. All me stuff is gone and since its impossible to take a backup I'll never get it back.
Die, Microsoft. Die.
You just made me lose heaps of things because of a camera flaw.
Thanks for letting us know:
1. What you were doing when it crashed.
2. What type of phone you have.
3. Whether or not you're using a 3rd party MicroSD card in the slot.
4. What actually happens when it crashes (phone freezes, app just closes, middle finger graphic comes up on the screen, what does it do?)
5. Were you on WiFI, EDGE, 3G, GPRS?
6. Are you sure the device isn't defective (And/or prematurely failing on you? In this case, the OS has nothing to do with it - can happen on any phone running any Smartphone OS)
7. Other trivial information that can cause us to come to better conclusions.
Instead, you plummel us with bad grammar, vulgarities, and a rant that will certainly accomplish nothing due to #s 1-5.
BTW, you should back up all important information on any device. Laptop, Tablet PC, Desktop PC, Smartphone, Thumb Drive, etc. It's not Microsoft's fault if you lose you fault due to data loss. Important information should be backed up and IIRC Windows Phone 7 is capable of keeping the Camera Roll Sync'd up with SkyDrive.
I give you 3/10, though.
Ciao!
You might try Windows Phone Support on twitter. They usually reply pretty fast during business hours.
http://twitter.com/#!/WinPhoneSupport
A side note, if you've got a job that depends on your ability to take pictures, you might not want to depend on a phone's camera and use a dedicated camera.
@Side Note: Still shouldn't matter. Anyone that takes (EDIT) photos for business use with their phone camera should have the SkyDrive Camera Roll Backup/Sync enabled and you can set your Photo Gallery to Private.
The OP's situation is completely avoidable.

i turned off light and changed the measurement adjustment.
it crashed when i tried to focus the object. black screen, crash.
so happy a restart fixxed it, i better dont mess with the settings for some time...
Yeah, besides, Microsoft did not MAKE you do a hard reset of your device.
If you read the manual and understood what you were doing before you did it you would have known that a Hard Reset puts the phone back to its initial state.
You must have also disabled image syncing onto Zune which would have backed up your photos everytime you plugged it in or Wifi synched it. Could have also auto-uploaded the pics to Skydrive and had a lower resolution copy on there.
Can't blame Microsoft for this. Yes, the camera should not be broken, but most times a soft reset will fix any software issues.
Bah, sorry.
I was kinda drunk when I posted this.

Nothing. I tried to take a picture by holding the camera button whilit was still locked.
2. What type of phone you have.

3. Whether or not you're using a 3rd party MicroSD card in the slot.
No, I did not modify my phone
4. What actually happens when it crashes (phone freezes, app just closes, middle finger graphic comes up on the screen, what does it do?)
It shows the zoom bar on the right, then immediately closes and shows the start screen.
5. Were you on WiFI, EDGE, 3G, GPRS?
Edge
6. Are you sure the device isn't defective (And/or prematurely failing on you? In this case, the OS has nothing to do with it - can happen on any phone running any Smartphone OS)
Nope, there's nothing wrong with it other than that.
7. Other trivial information that can cause us to come to better conclusions.
Not really, I never did anything special to it.
All I did that evening was texting, calling and updating my status on Facebook because the power blacked out, three times.
Ok, so after the third hard reset the camera works again.
But now all the pictures I take are rotated 90 degrees
I think there's definately something wrong with the camera app.

Sounds more like a HW problem to me (wouldn't be the first for a HD7) as it doesn't happen to everyone else.
Yeah, sounds like a bad HD7 to me too. My first HD7 was an awesome phone, if by awesome, the standard you use is how often it simulated Windows XP by crashing on me.
Returned it and got a new one and it's been smooth sailing so far.
Send that POS back and replace, blame HTC not MS and don't do your business while drunk otherwise it won't be the phone's fault you lost your job.
i don't know which is worse, being unable to identify the cause or blaming something else other than the cause

Honestly, I'm actually surprised somebody hasn't posted Die, Badboy70. Die. because of this post, XDA is maturing. Anyway, your Zune auto syncs your photos by default, I'm assuming if you do this for a living, you'd know not to turn this off. So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you're FOS for saying you're losing a job because of this. I'm betting more on you being a 14 year old who's phone is malfunctioning due to a hardware problem and had to come rant about it instead of asking for help.

Your excuse of being drunk just validates the first part of my phone. You won't know your device is defective without a professional looking at the camera hardware. Just becase nothing else is messing up doesn't mean the camera isn't defective. Considering it worked, and then didn't, especially on factory settings leads me to believe this is hardware related, if it even exists at all. I would try to replace the device.
It's more likely to be a defective HD7 ...
Doesn't a hard reset delete all the data off your phone? So instead syncing it to your PC and extracting the photos you decided to delete. It may be MS fault that your Camera app crashed, but its your fault the data is missing. Why didn't you back your photos up on your computer or even to skydrive? Couldn't had been to important if your didn't.

[Q] Mytouch 3g Slide Screen Issues ? (WARNING : EXTREMELY LARGE PHOTOS)

So recently my mytouch has been getting worse and worse. I'm not exactly sure if it's me or if it's the stupid phone because it's been degrading over time for some strange reason. First of all, the camera is **** for some reason, this is my second replacement phone from T-Mobile and it's extremely blurry for some reason(apparently it's a common problem but not common enough apparently for the tmobile representatives I've met with have seen before). Secondly, it's been becoming unresponsive at times although i kill my apps after i'm done with them(I probably only have internet, and facebook running most of the time). Third, ever since I've factory reset it, it's become very glitchy for some reason. One of the problems is that I would close the physical keyboard but after sending a text and all of a sudden the screen goes black and the only thing to fix it is to hit the power button and press it again to get it off of sleep. Another problem is after i send a text i close the keyboard and the screen repeats but the location of buttons is still where they're suppose to be on the screen.

Oh I see, well I tried to get it replaced but HTC was a bit suspicious when they wanted my credit card before anything ......
I have the same issue with my phone
As I was looking at your photos I realized I have the same issue going on with my phone. Does anyone have suggestions on ways to fix it? Personally, I do not believe it is a hardware issue. I do believe it is more of a software issue. That update that HTC offered is definitely screwed up! Ever sine I updated my phone, all of these problems started. This problem did not occur beforehand! My phone was working fine - before this "software update."
Same Problem
I had the same exact problem with the Repeating Screen (and completely agreed about the camera lol). Yesterday I tried demonstrating to my friend the problem, and permanently blacked out my screen. Now, the phone works in the sense that it receives calls, the home keys light up, and the camera still takes pictures. However, with no screen to select any options or perform any functions, the phone has been rendered completely useless. I, too, would like to figure out what the problem is and if there is any possible fix.
Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Just know you're not the only one lol
My girlfriend had the repeating screen issue back in May/June of this year. It was more than likely a software issue, because it became incrementally worse as the phone opened and closed until it came to a point where absolutely nothing could be done when the phone was moved horizontally.
I had T-mobile replace the phone at the time. Unfortuntely an idiot I work with who was supposed to mail it back didn't, I got stuck with an extra $360 on the bill.
Worked out paying for the phone with them yesterday morning, this morning my girlfriend messages me to let me know the screen is acting up again.
Potential Fix?

I would recommend replacing your flex ribbon. It worked for me, and from other threads I've read, I believe it's the cause of these issues. It's a pretty easy fix ( coming from me, who's far better at breaking electronics than fixing them, lol ).
Here's the flex ribbon that I bought off of Ebay ( it's the cheapest I found and it comes with the tools too ):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170647168235?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
And here's a good video on disassembling your Espresso:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jgFHuVWlig
P.S.: I'd recommend being more delicate than he was with the volume ribbon though, as mine seemed very frail. Also, this video is for replacing the digitizer, so you only need to follow it to get to the flex ribbon.
A month ago, I had issues very similar to the ones you posted. Sliding my keyboard out ( in any way but gently ) would occasionally split the screen or freeze the phone. Even without using my keyboard, the phone would occasionally freeze while "settling" after the boot animation, and sometimes even during the boot animation. Slowly, those "occasionally"s become more and more frequent, until my screen just went black one day. The phone still seemed to work ( lit up when turned on, made sounds, etc. ), just the screen seemed dead. Figured that I was having a combination of software issues ( the random freezes ), and hardware issues ( split & black screen ), but replacing my flex ribbon suprisingly fixed everything.
This is what worked on my MyTouch 3G Slide
i just keep sliding the phone. and turn off the screen then turn it back on. but not turning off the phone.

probably not, look on ebay for some digitizers, cheapest way to get them...

Initial thoughts...possible BUGs.

Got mine at 08:58 or something on the 8th, FedEx overnight, preordered on the 25th.

3.0.31-215287 kernel version
Some initial things that I quickly noticed...also, I had a major crash when using video recording...
As with the AT&T tester's unboxing on youtube (PhoneDog, I think?)...NO HEADPHONES/EARPHONES!! I need these for calls, especially LONG calls. This is not good. Other carriers must have contracted for them, since they had them. AT&T reboxed this as well.
I've seen my friends' Note2 Sprint model since the 25th, so some things I also noted as a difference so far:
- The AT&T model has the extended notification screen toggle options like the S3 has...Airplane mode, sound, etc. Sprint just got this with it's OTA -to arrive soon. I am not sure if T-Mobile had it (I forget).
- Cannot remove the AT&T bloatware, it seems. I am new to android (not computing, so yes, I know you can root it and remove it) but I think what is on here initially cannot be removed, and some can be disabled. Nuts when I have 11GB left of the 16GB and games like NOVA3 are 2GB! No app install on my nice 64GB SD card (unless I root) either. Anyone know if you can offload dormant apps or something? I may root this one in the future, but was just wondering for now (and for others asking).
- My Sprint friend noted that the S-Pen seemed slightly heavier/different...hard to say, I don't see why. If so, it's SLIGHTLY...very slightly. I also noted that I had no issue thus far with the pen making marks while hovering over the note, but that may be because it's a new pen. Will keep on that 'bug' and still looking around for a way to toggle sensitivity.
- Also, how do I know if my bootloader is unlocked/locked? (not trying to get too off-topic)
- DLNA is VERY choppy with the 8 second HD video my friend S-Beamed me. I am at home, using my Samsung 58" plasma C8000 model connected direct to my router (ethernet). VUDU, on my TV, requires 4Mbps for 1080p (it claims, but seems that is a floor min number)...havent tried wireless with my MBP, since i usually have it connected direct as well when doing DLNA that way. Not sure if this is just how it is with wifi and this device, but really...how could that be useful at all? My upload speed is fine on my 5GHz n-band. Speedtest on the device shows 6.36Mbps upload and 21.44Mbps download wifi from my Note 2.
Ahh, but now for the real BUG...here is my post on AC forums/ATT Note2 thread --->
Found a bug... My screen is all pink/purple hue after messing with the video recorder.
It is not restarting and not able to power off with long press of side key. Totally stuck!!!
I can't power it off hard (is that possible by the way, I haven't looked and I am new to Samsung devices).
Stuck. Purple/pink hue . See the image I took. Also took a video to show it in 'motion'. Kinda like a weird camera effect app, from hell! Not fun
The 'images' are tiled copies of what the camera sees in real time. It's stuck in messed up this camera/video mode.
Tried video recording and saw 'slo-mo' feature, and then a way to change from 1/2 to 1/4 and 1/8. Somehow, around then I hit record by accident. Then this just weird state of 'freeze' frame video started happening a few seconds later. I don't recall what details happened in between, if anything. Was going to leave camera app, that's about all i recall.
Opened it up and removed the battery. Popped back in. Restart, all is fine now. I'll test that again...er...later. Damn that was annoying as hell.
Took a pic and video with the iPhone. I think I attached the photo ok. The video is mov...what format can I send that in? I can email it if you want...short MOV to depict trying to shut off/restart and how it goes frame by frame in this 'pink tile' mode.
Pic looks blue...but it's purple/pink, not that that matters much.
I would maybe try a hard reset if you havent already...
yeah, thanks. If it happens again, I'll do that.
Do you mean 'master reset'? Or is there another way to reset, aside from taking out the battery.
You can disable bloatware in the built in app manager. Settings>Application Manager> Click the "ALL" tab.

Question Display failing

Keep getting constant purple lines going across my display, even after wipes and after updates, I honestly think it's about to fail.
Never dropped, not once, no water near it all all.
Ouch. Photos?

Even if you did drop it, if there is no obvious damage to the screen I bet you can RMA.

Getting that on apps like YouTube - especially when watching videos in portrait mode and scrolling through the comments?
It's not a hardware fault - it's a software fault.

use the Android Flash Tool and install the latest update. If it still happens after that, contact Google Support. Tell them you used their Flashed Tool and they should send you an Advanced Replacement because you've verified it's a valid warranty issue (they won't require you to send it in for "repairs" after using the flash tool)
if it is a software issue, the flash tool will fix it 100% (if its not some persistent bug)

With all due respect, how would flashing the same, presumably flawed, software update fix anything?
I think the occurence happens due to a the variable refresh rate - heck, the issue may well be tied to the app itself rather than the android software.
Videos run at 24 or 60 fps and the screen adapts to that. Browsing through the comments section changes the refresh rate to 120 hertz. The issue may well be linked to the disparity in refresh rates (and handling hereof) as the purple lines are only present a couple second after touching the display (and thus as the screen ramps up to 120 hz)

So you're getting purple lines across your display just like op's issue, and no one has replied with a similar issue (nor have I seen this specific issue appear on reddit or on this sub that was actually a software issue) - and you don't want to try a factory reset/re-flash to try and resolve it? I mean that's fine. I feel if most of the users on xda had this issue, they would want to look at trying to fix it - especially because it doesn't look like a common issue. Again, nobody can know every issue and how to resolve it so having insightful community dialogue is what xda is all about.
From what I've seen over the past 13 years using Smart Phones, purple lines while playing video is usually a hardware issue - but it's extremely hard to tell without photos and videos of the problem. The issue where the screen would flash quickly during changes in refresh rates was fixed in the January update. Also, I take it that when you force a high refresh rate (or turn off smooth display) it doesn't occur.
You replied with a comment that had a question mark and then followed up with a statement. I think most of us on here are just trying to help, but it's all good. Hopefully your issue gets fixed in an upcoming update (whatever your issue maybe, since again, it's really hard to gauge without a video of the issue). It's my fault for jumping to conclusions and in hindsight I should have replied asking for a video of what you were experiencing. But it's all good. No worries.

Just because you haven't seen it, does not mean it does not exist. In fact there has been a thread about this before. That's why anecdotal evidence is a poor measure
I appreciate your contribution and who knows, it might just work. You're right about purple lines often being a hardware failure, but the purple lines are in many cases (though not always) reproducable, consistent and for me and the few others who have posted about it (again, poor evidence) tied to one app.
I don't see the issue with following my question up with a statement. The statement - or a further explanation as it truly is - serves the purpose of describing the issue to greater detail.
I appreciate your time and your utmost respectful way of responding.
Here's the link containing a video showing the issue.

interesting. now we're getting somewhere - I actually replied in the comments on that post because I also had the blue flashing lines appear once (or twice). I then used the flash tool to flash (or cli with the download image) the December update (before they pulled it) and enabled the options wipe and flash all partitions (or again not sure if I manually reflashed with cli, with the all partitions command). restored my device through Google Backup and haven't seen the issue since.
If I were to guess, looking at that video again - I would guess it's an issue with the Display Firmware Profile (so hardware firmware that either a future update and/or reflashing android should/hopefully resolve it ((leaning towards the latter since it might have fixed my issue, but again its hard to tell because I flashed a new build, December, and wiped)). But it's a wild guess. The lines for me weren't purple but more light blue that had tiny imperfections in the lines, like an old tv monitor or something (similar to that video).
This post reminded of other devices who have those pink or purple lines striped down the screen which most often that not, is usually a deeper issue closer to the hardware side where a repair is usually necessary. But it's been almost 2 months since I had that issue and I haven't looked at any updates on that thread since (I don't think anyhow).
