Car Dock - Xoom Accessories

I will be getting my xoom tomorrow morning and this will be one of my first accessories.

I'd like something that would clamp on to my dash wall. Think cop car laptop.

I like this idea, I would especially love if these guys would drill holes for the camera....augmented relaity navagation has already come to Rt. 66, just a metter of time before it comes to Android. Have you seen an ipad mount reviews?

i work for a company who makes high end video products for the automotive world. We we're looking at making something for my XOOM today but in the sun...the XOOM screen is just very big which causes a lot of glare and with the sun hitting it at angles we couldn't see the screen very well.
Going to give it a shot anyways...we'll see.

The glare is an excellent point.

Looks awesome! Let us know how it goes when you get it. However, in CA, I think there is a law against operating a screen like this in the front of a car. If it actually got mounted, we would probably get fined for it unless we could work a GPS angle or something.

My car's windshield isn't big enough to mount a tablet to it....
This might not only be illegal, its likely very dangerous because of how much of your field of view it blocks.

Was thinking about replacing my old car dvd player for the kids with the xoom, mounted to the headrest. There's one on Amazon, I'm too new to post links.
Would definitely need an anti-glare screen protector though

I don't think the glare would be any worse than my Droid X. I have learned how to angel it for best results. I have also held the Xoom up to see where it would work best and only block a view of the top of the dash (don't look much at that anyway ) I would only use it for longer trips and in the motor home anyway. The Droid, in it's dock, works fine for local destinations.

Isnt it alittle bulky to put on a dash?

This is the only way I see Xoom in my car:

no offense but putting the xoom on the windshield is the dumbest thing i've ever seen.

other than the glare issue, i think a car mount solution could work for certain cars. definitely not a windsheield mount though. it would have to be a variation on the Proclip style thing that is specifically designed for your car and specifically designed for the xoom (i have one of these for my galaxy s, and it is absolutely hands down the best car dock ever).
one of the downsides of living in an apartment is i cant weld something like this out of sheet metal as i would have in my old place... on the upside it probably saves me from higher insurance fees from the inevitable car crash that would result from having such a setup in my car.

http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounting-RAM-B-316-1-AP8-Non-Locking-Universal/dp/B0042HLMYK
This is one of the ones that I want. They just need to make it for the Xoom...you could probably buy the one in the OP and this mount and piece them together just fine. This would put it in an area like a cop would use their laptops for.

thought I'd revive this thread
Has any of you early adapters ordered a car mount yet? I would love to do that in the near future (including a car charger) but I don't know what to get. It would be great if it didn't cost $50+ though. Main use would be navigation.

I just ordered this...
http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/mfx-88-ipadtab.htm
was something like 47 with shipping. The mast is 20inches. On backorder but they say it should be here in a few weeks.

I'm planning on installing the standard dock underneath my HU. The dock has an integrated power and aux out so it perfect for this application. The only problem is it will block the IR (not to mention all the controls) of my HU so ill need to hard wire my HUs remote to the IR... but I thinks it worth it. Best carputer you can have on your dash right now, and you can take it with you when you are not in your car!

I wouldn't mind fixing it to the small tray in the middle console of my car using either double-sided tape or even screws. I've read that the goose-necks are wobbly and the tablet is moving all the time. I'll do some more research!

I am kind of worried about the wobble too, but I will be able to tell you for sure in about 7 days. Mountguys just sent me an email that mine has shipped (Was supposed to be on backorder, guess not). Will post results when I can. Forgot to mention, this is going in a 2011 Maxima...

Car headrest Mount

Just ordered the item below to mount to my headrest for the little one in the back seat. Anyone use one of these before? Seems they sell several which all appear to be the same model, but are different prices.
http://www.amazon.com/Navitech-port...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1299178708&sr=8-1
I'll follow up once I have a chance to test it. Shipping from across the pond so it will probably be a few weeks.
Pricey option.

Better option.

Its a case and can strap to a headrest.
Oh yeah! Zoogue all the way! It just needs to ship today. I can't wait for this case.

I am very interested in knowing how well this works, I am looking for something as well.
Just checking to see if anyone ordered/received one? Shipped from overseas and hoping this comes in before Thursday and a long car-ride with an 18mo old and Great Grandmother.
This os only for ipad2... if so then you're on be wrong forum.

They make the same one for multiple tablets and/or DVD players as they mention in the product title. Also, the dimensions they quote will fit the xoom.
Oddly enough, they charge different prices different models though they appear to be the same product.
I just put this mount into my car. It works great with the xoom!

Looks like a http://www.ram-mount.com mount.
It finally came, although just a day after a I was hoping to get it. Haven't had a chance to take a pic yet but it installed in minutes and fit perfectly in my Jeep Grand Cherokee.
There are foam pads on the clips which will prevent any scratching of the screen. The piece that holds the xoom has a spring loaded back which will hold it securly in the mount. Nothing really stopping you from using it with the portfolio case or other protective casing.
The only beef I have has to do with the headrest mount and the part that holds the xoom. They are two separate pieces which work on a slide lock mechanism. I imagine over time this could be an issue. Not so worried because of 14 price tag.
Very sturdy and well made for a $14 headrest mount. More well thought out than the portfolio case
Will try to take a pic or two tonight and upload.

any options for someone who wants something quick?
I didn't think about the up coming trip to OBX we are taking next week (6+ hr drive), and mounting the Xoom for my 2.5yr old son to watch movies in the back seat of the GMC Terrain would be awesome!

Hi KidJoe,
Do you have a case on the Xoom right now? If you're using the Motorola portfolio case, by any chance, there's a sort of channel between the upper and lower sections of the case's back section in which you can nicely fit a small (like parachute or clothesline) cord. Not at all fancy, but it's quick and dirty and allows you to tie the Xoom to a headrest. It may not appear stable until you try it, since the back folds, but when it's tied to a firm object the back cannot fold and the Xoom stays nicely in place. You'll even have access to the charging port.

This one is very quick, I bought their specific models for iPad Air and one for 7'' DVD Player, their #1 best sellers on Amazon, a great option
TFY 2nd Gen Car Headrest Mount Holder

Soundgate M2 installed and working great.

Hey guys,
After thinking of what type of mount I wanted, at a reasonable price to start, I ordered the M2 from Amazon. $10 can't be beat right now, except maybe by this frankensteined holder.
The main reason I need something other than the Verizon standard dock is because the phone is in a case.
So here are a few pictures of it:

Folded away its near invisible.
Standing up and ready for action.
The tiny nub on the back of my case.
Its very flush, so I can't even feel it in my pocket.
Phone attached. I did not supertighten the swiveling arms, so it can move just a bit. Gravity lets it rest on the dash and friction keeps it in place. And because I can adjust it a bit I can change the tilt based on glare.
I can rotate it both left and right 90 degrees. So I can charge if I need to.
Or have it stand up.
And here is the finished product. Perfect place in the line of sight too.
I just today saw the Proclip and if this does not work out I may look into that, but it seems so much more expensive for relatively little extra benefit.
I have the SG2, also. I really like it because it doesn't move at all. Just be sure to tighten the screws every 6 months or so. They back out a hair. I have three(used three different cars at one point) and I have used it with three different phones also. TP2, D2, and now the TB. I actually like your idea of turning it around to face the opposite direction because it seems to look better. I may try that. Great for watching CFB while on the road.

Double stick tape. But I did not use the one that came with the mount, I used some 3M control adhesive strips, so that I can remove them with no blemish. It is incredibly solid when mounted.
After a few days now these are my new observations:
The adhesive on the phone nub is not as strong. Or maybe its the soft feel texture of my case, but the nub fell off. So I superglued it back on with a small modification. I put it with the nub upwards, so I can just slide it into the holder and not have to twist it left/right.
I noticed the holder circle nub blocker could be removed, as it has a seam, effectively letting you use it as a slide holder only, but after a bit of prying it won't budge, so I assume its glued on. That's why I glued the phone nub upwards instead.
Works wonders now. And holy crap navigation by google is awesome. Never had a smartphone before, only a Tom Tom, and that thing is excellent. GPS acquires instantly and has no issues. It acquires initially much faster if I am moving, rather than standing still. I need to find a guide on how to use Navigation, and a good car dock app.

For navigation:
Push and hold search
Speak "Navigate to" (Address) or (Name, like "Pizza Hut")
You can even use general places if you just want a quick route to a general area, like "Navigate To Boston, MA" will give you a route to the heart of Boston. Once you get closer, you could just give it a more exact location. This is handy for long trips that you know you will be stopping at least once.
The Google car dock app is nice, or you may prefer the HTC Car dock.
Drop $30 on the verizon car dock for the TB, it works great, charges your phone and automatically launches your phone in to DOCKED mode which will allow you all types of things once you get to tinkerin'.
It seems logical to go cheaper but honestly once you start purchasing things for this phone you will quickly realize you may as well drop the dimes for the right stuff in stead of trying to find a cheaper solution. The cheaper solution never works as nicely as the OEM. of course

Right. I looked into those docks, but none of them work with cases. And I don't want a windshield mounted dock, as the windshield/dashboard angle is such that it does not work well. I tried with a dock for my previous phone, as well as my Tom Tom.
So while the dock may work for him, it certainly does not fit everyone's needs.

and this is a simplified prototype to test fitment and other things.
it fits the GSM and LTE Nexus with a case on it. the touchstone goodies are inbetween the case and the phone itself. opening the phone was unnecessary.
right now the phone is a bit of a tight fit. need to get that sorted out and try again in a few days. also need to verify the touchstone will work with the gap i gave it. (.050ish)
look forward to hearing any comments you guys have.

are u charging via pogo pins or micro usb?
Only issue I see with this is that the placement off the touchstone would have to line up exactly with where you place the coil.
From what I see it wouldn't work on mine since my coil is much higher to avoid interference with NFC...looks very promising though!

i tried it and there weren't problems with nfc and the coil using beam and an id
and also IF there were problems it wouldn't matter because it's a car dock pretty much sure he's not using nfc in that case
Pretty limiting in that you've blocked off the phone's speaker and the headphone jack. Sure, some people use bluetooth for everything - but some don't. Just some food for thought.
Looks cool. Any way you can share a cad file of this. I drew a few up myself and I'd like to compare dimensions.

Impressive.
Does the thickness of the material interfere with the cam at all? IIRC it has a pretty wide view. That said, dude, it has a hole for the camera, good stuff
Let's start from the top
Charging through the pogo pins. charging rate appears to be around 750Ma, or around 40% an hour. It was good enough to keep my phone charged while tethered streaming a movie. So its good enough for me.
I realize I didn't leave any provisions for the internal mics or speakers to do their thing. Much less room for the headphone and USB port. I'm only making a few of these for me and some friends willing to conform to my apple-esque control over how their phone is setup.
The NFC works fine, planning on using an NFC tag to launch the car dock.
Not sure about the camera, I should check that...
T-Keith, PM me your email and I'll try and send you some files when I get it to a point where I'm happy (it fits kinda tight right now)
Thanks for all the kind words, I'll get some nicer photos up soon.
Thats just good stuff - would love to see this extended to a home landscape dock.
I'm confused about how/what is holding the phone in the dock.
looks awesome. You could start a Kickstarter to get funding. I want one!
Definitely looks promising. Great inspiration, I might see what I can come up with if I have some free time. This is just begging for some rapid prototyping fun.
I'd also love to take a look at your files. Great work.

Agreed! If you post up the cad files when you're done I can probably whip one up in my company's makerbot. I can try and figure out the cost and go from there. This is an AWESOME project!
Question.
If you've modded your case so you can charge using a Touchstone, haven't you already got magnets in there to hold the handset in place when using the Touchstone?
If so, then what does the plastic bit achieve?
I'm not trying to criticise, I'm just confused is all.
Did you ever make more progress on this? I use a touchstone in my car now but something to keep the phone a bit more secure would be awesome!

Most people are afraid to use JUST a touchstone in their car because if you hit a big bump then your phone could go flying. This is EXACTLY what I was looking to do, integrate a touchstone into a regular car dock so that you can just drop it in for wireless charge and not worry about your phone launching across the car when you make a quick turn. I think I'm going to try to modify an already made dock to fit the touchstone as the back plate, as I don't have access to a CNC machine or a 3D printer =(
EDIT: Sorry if it's a bit off topic, but I found a dock that looks like it'd be perfect to cut out the back and integrate a touchstone. What do you guys think?

bicycle mount for my s3

hi i'm looking for a good bicycle mount to put my s3 in.
it needs to be weather proof and also able to plug headphones into the phone.
so far i can only find a universal one that is the "Arkon SM032".
if any one has this mount, what is your opinion of it with the s3 and can you plug headphones into it as the jack is at the top of the phone.
if any one has any other suggestions as to a good bicycle mount then that will be great.
thanks in advance

i like this case but i am unsure about a couple of things.
1. is it weather proof ie, will it survive torrential rain on my bike
2. it isnt very clear about headphones. i read that there is a adapter, does this come with the case or do i have to buy this separately.

The case comes with 2 pads, a thick one and a thin one; the pics show the thick one in use, I like how it brings the phone all the way up to the plastic cover. It does make things tight, however, so I'd probably use the thin pad with headphones (I didn't have headphones on me when I took these pics).
It's a solid mount if you're using it for navigation or tracking; sometimes I like to you My Tracks to see my route and mileage. I don't use this setup for music when I ride, but I would think there's enough room if you use the small pad; there's a cable pass through slot on the case.
One other thing to mention is that the there's a screw on the back of the case where it connects to the mount, so there's no way it'll fall off from vibration or whatnot.
Here ya go, this looks a decent bracket and case for the S3

in the mean time if anyone knows of any other mount i should consider please feel free to reply as i will still be subscribed to this post.
thanks again
why would you want a bikemoint?
soooo you can mount it to your bike??
why would I want to mount my phone to my bike? here is what I "run" on my bike
icardio. mapping tracking and heartrate with lap and time etc..
music (going to my bt speaker also mounted to my handlebars usually playing a podcast)
backup light (in case my primary dies)
cycle computer software running (speed distance cadence etc.. etc..)
ability to take calls and see who is calling without having to touch the phone.
BTW SLIP GRIP has mounts for the S3 AND for "other cases" including my preffered case ology cases (impact case) and otter and a few others!! sweet!
sadly shady gambino you confirmed I can't use that case. your S3 is almost too big so mine inside its case will definitely be too big

Delta Cycle Smartphone Caddy II
$12.99 for the next 3 days.
I have a couple of these and for the most part like them. I fear they may break easy and find that my phone gets covered in dust when I ride rail trails.
I almost forgot accessing the home button while the phone is in the mount is all but impossible hi a lot dremel work should sole the problem.

Weather Proof for Road Biking
Hey guys,
I just bought this case and I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed. Very solid case thats can handle the rain and long road bike rides. It also allows for headphones to be plugged in which is a huge plus for me. A little on the expensive side but if you read the comments, phones have survived drops at 18km/hr.

Wireless Charging Car Mount Options?

I just got a Nexus 5 and really liking the Qi wireless charging built inside the device. I have seen some options on the internet for wireless charging car mounts and wanted to see if anyone had any reviews and/or feedback before I purchase
I have seen the iOttie Easy Flex Wireless at CES, Choe on Amazon and an Owl something option. (Sorry - I was trying to post the links to more details but since I am new I cannot.)
Please - any feedback would be great because I really want to purchase SOMETHING for both mine and my wife's vehicle. Thanks! :good:
From what I understand the car mount options out there are very few with the full capability to provide a complete charge whilst having various apps running.. IE, maps, music, gps etc etc...
I would love to be proven wrong, though that is my understanding. Proclip were doing R&D on the Qi wireless charging but have yet to come up with a product that can fulfil this void.

I just received mine, I am using the CD tray mounting option but have the dash one(which doesnt work well for the textured dash of my Sonata), works great holds the phone securely using the built in magnets comes with a 2.1amp car charger which i used going between cali and vegas with GPS and slacker streaming over bluetooth for the whole time and it still charged. Very good construction and again the magnets in teh charger hold the phone secure in landscape/portrait even over some fairly large bumps phone never moved.
sad to say, but after finding no possible way to mount my airdock to my existing mount, i will probably be selling it for what i paid
i was really hoping to get to use it too, as (with the plastic still covering the microfoam suction) the magnets still hold quite well.
i have a custom mount that my current dock attaches to with the standard 4 bolts (and nuts)

there's no possible way to mount the airdock to that without opening it up and drilling holes, which i may still do)

why not just drill a hole in the current mount and attached a ball mount to the current mount ? or use a suction pad and just use the regular mount to it something like
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Portable-GPS-Dashboard-Adhesive/dp/B002IABMYS
then just attach the dash mount u got with the airdock to that, just use a really good adhesive on the disk
i looked into all that... most of those options would move the phone a lot closer to me, and usually directly over my gear box. it would also vibrate a lot more than it currently does
i guess i'll look into it some more though... worst case is i sell the airdock and either keep using my N4 proclip, or purchase the N5 proclip... no Qi charging, but a perfect fit.
Does the wireless charging work if you have a case?

It does work with a case, i have a fairly thick case on mine (just for testing) one of the wallet cases and it charges fine, magnets get a little weaker after the 1/3'' it has to penetrate
Would you mind posting a picture of the case or link?

I made my own "airdock". It took some doing finding the material used for the face but I did find it. Let me tell ya, the suspension in my car is pretty stiff and the roads in New England are garbage. The phone WITH case did not budge and maintained charge. Its not a fast charge (everyone that knows anything about Qi charging knows it isn't fast). I can post links to what I used. I still have a ridiculous amount of that "small" sheet I ordered for the face of mine so I can sell off pieces if anyone is interested. Obviously, contact me via pm for that material so as to not clutter this thread.
