and this is a simplified prototype to test fitment and other things.
it fits the GSM and LTE Nexus with a case on it. the touchstone goodies are inbetween the case and the phone itself. opening the phone was unnecessary.
right now the phone is a bit of a tight fit. need to get that sorted out and try again in a few days. also need to verify the touchstone will work with the gap i gave it. (.050ish)
look forward to hearing any comments you guys have.

looks awesome!

agreed really WOW shame i can't do such thing because don't have such machinery
are u charging via pogo pins or micro usb?

Only issue I see with this is that the placement off the touchstone would have to line up exactly with where you place the coil.
From what I see it wouldn't work on mine since my coil is much higher to avoid interference with NFC...looks very promising though!

i tried it and there weren't problems with nfc and the coil using beam and an id
and also IF there were problems it wouldn't matter because it's a car dock pretty much sure he's not using nfc in that case

Pretty limiting in that you've blocked off the phone's speaker and the headphone jack. Sure, some people use bluetooth for everything - but some don't. Just some food for thought.

Looks cool. Any way you can share a cad file of this. I drew a few up myself and I'd like to compare dimensions.

Impressive.
Does the thickness of the material interfere with the cam at all? IIRC it has a pretty wide view. That said, dude, it has a hole for the camera, good stuff

Let's start from the top
Charging through the pogo pins. charging rate appears to be around 750Ma, or around 40% an hour. It was good enough to keep my phone charged while tethered streaming a movie. So its good enough for me.
I realize I didn't leave any provisions for the internal mics or speakers to do their thing. Much less room for the headphone and USB port. I'm only making a few of these for me and some friends willing to conform to my apple-esque control over how their phone is setup.
The NFC works fine, planning on using an NFC tag to launch the car dock.
Not sure about the camera, I should check that...
T-Keith, PM me your email and I'll try and send you some files when I get it to a point where I'm happy (it fits kinda tight right now)
Thanks for all the kind words, I'll get some nicer photos up soon.

Thats just good stuff - would love to see this extended to a home landscape dock.

I'm confused about how/what is holding the phone in the dock.

looks awesome. You could start a Kickstarter to get funding. I want one!

Definitely looks promising. Great inspiration, I might see what I can come up with if I have some free time. This is just begging for some rapid prototyping fun.
I'd also love to take a look at your files. Great work.

Agreed! If you post up the cad files when you're done I can probably whip one up in my company's makerbot. I can try and figure out the cost and go from there. This is an AWESOME project!

Question.
If you've modded your case so you can charge using a Touchstone, haven't you already got magnets in there to hold the handset in place when using the Touchstone?
If so, then what does the plastic bit achieve?
I'm not trying to criticise, I'm just confused is all.

Did you ever make more progress on this? I use a touchstone in my car now but something to keep the phone a bit more secure would be awesome!

Most people are afraid to use JUST a touchstone in their car because if you hit a big bump then your phone could go flying. This is EXACTLY what I was looking to do, integrate a touchstone into a regular car dock so that you can just drop it in for wireless charge and not worry about your phone launching across the car when you make a quick turn. I think I'm going to try to modify an already made dock to fit the touchstone as the back plate, as I don't have access to a CNC machine or a 3D printer =(
EDIT: Sorry if it's a bit off topic, but I found a dock that looks like it'd be perfect to cut out the back and integrate a touchstone. What do you guys think?

I'd like something that would clamp on to my dash wall. Think cop car laptop.
I like this idea, I would especially love if these guys would drill holes for the camera....augmented relaity navagation has already come to Rt. 66, just a metter of time before it comes to Android. Have you seen an ipad mount reviews?
i work for a company who makes high end video products for the automotive world. We we're looking at making something for my XOOM today but in the sun...the XOOM screen is just very big which causes a lot of glare and with the sun hitting it at angles we couldn't see the screen very well.
Going to give it a shot anyways...we'll see.
The glare is an excellent point.
Looks awesome! Let us know how it goes when you get it. However, in CA, I think there is a law against operating a screen like this in the front of a car. If it actually got mounted, we would probably get fined for it unless we could work a GPS angle or something.
My car's windshield isn't big enough to mount a tablet to it....
This might not only be illegal, its likely very dangerous because of how much of your field of view it blocks.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Was thinking about replacing my old car dvd player for the kids with the xoom, mounted to the headrest. There's one on Amazon, I'm too new to post links.
Would definitely need an anti-glare screen protector though

I don't think the glare would be any worse than my Droid X. I have learned how to angel it for best results. I have also held the Xoom up to see where it would work best and only block a view of the top of the dash (don't look much at that anyway ) I would only use it for longer trips and in the motor home anyway. The Droid, in it's dock, works fine for local destinations.
Isnt it alittle bulky to put on a dash?
This is the only way I see Xoom in my car:

no offense but putting the xoom on the windshield is the dumbest thing i've ever seen.
other than the glare issue, i think a car mount solution could work for certain cars. definitely not a windsheield mount though. it would have to be a variation on the Proclip style thing that is specifically designed for your car and specifically designed for the xoom (i have one of these for my galaxy s, and it is absolutely hands down the best car dock ever).
one of the downsides of living in an apartment is i cant weld something like this out of sheet metal as i would have in my old place... on the upside it probably saves me from higher insurance fees from the inevitable car crash that would result from having such a setup in my car.
http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounting-RAM-B-316-1-AP8-Non-Locking-Universal/dp/B0042HLMYK
This is one of the ones that I want. They just need to make it for the Xoom...you could probably buy the one in the OP and this mount and piece them together just fine. This would put it in an area like a cop would use their laptops for.
thought I'd revive this thread
Has any of you early adapters ordered a car mount yet? I would love to do that in the near future (including a car charger) but I don't know what to get. It would be great if it didn't cost $50+ though. Main use would be navigation.

I'm planning on installing the standard dock underneath my HU. The dock has an integrated power and aux out so it perfect for this application. The only problem is it will block the IR (not to mention all the controls) of my HU so ill need to hard wire my HUs remote to the IR... but I thinks it worth it. Best carputer you can have on your dash right now, and you can take it with you when you are not in your car!

I wouldn't recommend the dock as a stand-in dock, where you plug it in on the go, or quickly. The phone is only supported by the actual USB plug! So I'd be REALLY worried about the port getting loose over time, so I'd skip that. I had that happen to my SGSII. But on the other hand, you can lay it down and it was made for this, too! So there is no need to worry about the usb plug getting loose. I really like it for this. Just look at the last 2 pictures.
I hope you like it! It's a decent dock, I guess. It's more of a stand now. Haha.

Am tempted by this dock... but don't understand what you're saying here. I mean... in the images it looks like there's a rear-support for the phone to lean against. Do you have to faff with this or something, or does it remain up, so you can just drop the phone on and have it lean?
Alternatively, does anybody have suggestions for docks that work with cases? I got the iGadgitz case (link), which I'm totally pleased with... it doesn't turn your pockets inside-out when pulling it out.

Tap it to the right or to the left, and it'll put some kind of strain on the phone's port. That's what I don't like. I have a dock that DOES support the sides, and still ended up busting the port. I don't use the inbuilt charging feature. I just put it in the landscape orientation and use a normal microusb, and that also allows me to grab my phone while I'm waking up in the morning and unplug it correctly.

Ah, gotya. Yeah, my Streak sits in landscape, with a fat connector, so never realised the difference with the Note and a tiny connection.
And bugger... your port has already been wrecked? So it's a real issue. Bah.
Mmm... not exactly swamped with options that allow for cases though, but don't think I can risk it since I've gotta stick with this baby for 23.75 months yet
That said, this thing does last an entire day, unlike my Streak... so maybe I'll just get a spider-holder or something without charge/usb.
I use the dock daily. I just don't use the built in charger. I turn it on its side and use the regular charger. I think the angle's great.
But this does make me miss the blackberry dock. Blackberry's have metal connectors ONLY for docks that will never mess with any ports . Fantastic idea in my opinion. Oh well. This is a monster of a phone! hehe. Sold my 9900 for it
Awesome.
Thanks for the info, I've gone a head and ordered one.
I guess it'll be safe on my desk, as the odds on knocking it are near zero. As an alarm clock though, I totally get you... I'd wreck it in a single day.
Ah, charging all day at work... I'll probably save a million* in electric bills.
*Ok, maybe $0.01 per month, lol.

Building my own clock dock with battery charger

I managed to put together a google sketchup model of a galaxy nexus horizontal dock with extra battery charger. It has quite a ways to go but it is a nice start. I am going to get my buddy to print these out with his reprap printer this weekend and we will see what needs to be done.
Goals:
Use pogo pins to charge nexus
auto charge extra battery
have the dock hold the phone sturdy enough
*Update 2/16
I went to my friends house to get the parts printed out and lets just say it wasn't pretty. I haven't done any 3D printing before and it showed. I got some tips on what to change to get the part to work better in the printer and I will be spending some time this weekend fixing the model. The good news with this is that the new design should be extremely easy to change for different phones and phone shapes as all I will need to do is change the part that holds the phone, the rest of the dock can be reused.
Also I finished the schematic for the battery charging circuit. I will post a full schematic as well as a board layout when i actually put it up on a computer, right now its just a sketch in my notebook. The basics of the charging circuit is a National Instruments LP3947. This chip provides battery level monitoring which will allow the battery to charge to 100% and not overcharge or overheat. As for the power supply, I haven't decided yet. It is ether going to be a 2 amp plug or a 1 amp micro USB plug. The pogo pins are only rated for around 600mah and it is recommended to charge a battery at 500mah or less so I might just stick with using a micro USB plug to keep things easy.
* Update 2/18
I had to redesign the dock from scratch because as I stated before google sketchup isn't great for 3D printing and the model I tried to print failed pretty bad. I took my friend's advice and tried to chop it up into smaller pieces. I am going to print these out in a few hours and will post results this time. As for the schematic, I will get to that when I can. Getting a new model done was more important.
As you can see in the picture the dock is in a lot more pieces. Hopefully this means I can quickly redesign each part that is needed if something doesn't come out right in the print without having to print a whole new model. Also with more pieces anyone should be able to adjust this for any phone or case. The tray that holds the phone has room for another 3-5mm of thickness. I am not sure how much room there is width wise though.
* Update 2/19
Printed out a few parts, only two came out so I will give that another go when I have time.

Whenever I get it.working I will post instructions
If this had solid build quality I would definitely be interested. Especially in pogo pin charging capabilities.
If you decided to make one that fits with the cruzer a2 cases, Id def be in for this. Id even throw 1 in for ya if you dont already have one so you can get the stats right.
solid idea! hope you make it happen with all these delays on the official dock.
I'm very interested. Especially if it can incorporate pogo pins.

I have been thinking about this for a few days and I am a bit worried that people won't like the printed plastic finish. Since I am basically only making this for myself I am going for function over form. I only have access to a RepRap 3D printer and my own PCB etching stuff, so no nice injected plastic. If people are still interested in buying one instead of just building one from my instructions that I post when I'm done we can talk then.
Very much looking forward to this! It's similar to something I'd love to do myself but I graduated in December so I no longer have access to my school's rapid prototyping lab.

I am thinking of getting this product (just the case version), I am wondering if it will still work if I slap a TPU case on top of it.
Any kind of feedback would help. Thanx.
if you're going to spend that much money, why not just do either the palm touchstone mod or get the qi wireless receiver and transmitter instead? they'll end up cheaper and in the qi case, it'll be reuseable for future products that uses qi standards..
EDIT: You probably wont be able to add a case of your choice on it as well since the size will be very different from the original s3 size.

I like the option of just getting into my car and placing the phone on a the dock. It immediately holds it and also charges it. No messing with wires and a dock holder. I thought I will take it one step further and put a TecTiles on it, so it can start my bluetooth connectivity and other options. All this would be one step.
It also come with a case version, which I am probably going to get. Just did not want to add bulk.
if it works it works, but you will be stuck using it with only their product line and no one else's.
It's up to you though.. i'd rather get a universal option rather than something that is limited to one company only. (I can use chargers from nokia, energizer, oregon scientific, etc while you're going to have to buy from magnetyze) Also to note, once you change your phone, you would have to wait and see if they'll create a case/backing for your next phone if you want to continue using the set or you'll just have to ebay it off or toss it in the trash.
Well... i also don't trust magnets to hold my phone in place while i'm driving as well... I'd rather have a dock that grips it nice and tight rather than a magnet, but that's just me.

I have seen the iOttie Easy Flex Wireless at CES, Choe on Amazon and an Owl something option. (Sorry - I was trying to post the links to more details but since I am new I cannot.)
Please - any feedback would be great because I really want to purchase SOMETHING for both mine and my wife's vehicle. Thanks! :good:
From what I understand the car mount options out there are very few with the full capability to provide a complete charge whilst having various apps running.. IE, maps, music, gps etc etc...
I would love to be proven wrong, though that is my understanding. Proclip were doing R&D on the Qi wireless charging but have yet to come up with a product that can fulfil this void.

I just received mine, I am using the CD tray mounting option but have the dash one(which doesnt work well for the textured dash of my Sonata), works great holds the phone securely using the built in magnets comes with a 2.1amp car charger which i used going between cali and vegas with GPS and slacker streaming over bluetooth for the whole time and it still charged. Very good construction and again the magnets in teh charger hold the phone secure in landscape/portrait even over some fairly large bumps phone never moved.
sad to say, but after finding no possible way to mount my airdock to my existing mount, i will probably be selling it for what i paid
i was really hoping to get to use it too, as (with the plastic still covering the microfoam suction) the magnets still hold quite well.
i have a custom mount that my current dock attaches to with the standard 4 bolts (and nuts)

there's no possible way to mount the airdock to that without opening it up and drilling holes, which i may still do)

why not just drill a hole in the current mount and attached a ball mount to the current mount ? or use a suction pad and just use the regular mount to it something like
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Portable-GPS-Dashboard-Adhesive/dp/B002IABMYS
then just attach the dash mount u got with the airdock to that, just use a really good adhesive on the disk
i looked into all that... most of those options would move the phone a lot closer to me, and usually directly over my gear box. it would also vibrate a lot more than it currently does
i guess i'll look into it some more though... worst case is i sell the airdock and either keep using my N4 proclip, or purchase the N5 proclip... no Qi charging, but a perfect fit.
Does the wireless charging work if you have a case?

It does work with a case, i have a fairly thick case on mine (just for testing) one of the wallet cases and it charges fine, magnets get a little weaker after the 1/3'' it has to penetrate
Would you mind posting a picture of the case or link?

I made my own "airdock". It took some doing finding the material used for the face but I did find it. Let me tell ya, the suspension in my car is pretty stiff and the roads in New England are garbage. The phone WITH case did not budge and maintained charge. Its not a fast charge (everyone that knows anything about Qi charging knows it isn't fast). I can post links to what I used. I still have a ridiculous amount of that "small" sheet I ordered for the face of mine so I can sell off pieces if anyone is interested. Obviously, contact me via pm for that material so as to not clutter this thread.
