Question About the Otterbox Defender - Atrix 4G Accessories

I just purchased an Otterbox Defender for $31.95 on eBay (an excellent deal! ). I just wanted to see if the case makes the phone more difficult to use and if there are any problems that have arisen to anyone as a result of it.

I used the defender for a day and returned it. For one, i forgot how much of a non-fan i am of soft shells/cases.... since they seem to attract dust from other dimensions sometimes. The holster is nice... but in order to clip it in or take it out, it usually seemed to be a two-hand job, so that kinda defeated the purpose to me. It also seemed to make it slightly more difficult to actually get an accurate read with the fingerprint sensor.... i believe mostly due to the silicon outer shell, which as you swipe your finger, would peel back somewhat and make it hard to actually get a complete scan without stopping short or something like that.

I've used Defenders before with my Nexus One & HTC HD2, and loved them though they were very bulky, but I thought the extra protection was worth it (just in case). I Ask because the my Defender for my N1 had problems with the buttons and they weren't really responsive and dust always got in the screen from the hole for the trackball. Thanks for your feedback! I'm planning on painting the plastic shell either red or white since I've always envied the iPhones multitude of colors

I have had mine in a defender since day one. I used it without for about 1/2 a day then loaded it in. I own a construction company so i am out in the dirt and weather constantly so the otter box is almost a must. I haven't noticed any loss of functionality. It takes a few times to learn how to unsnap the latch with the knuckle of your index finger as you remove the phone with one hand but it works once you learn the motion. No problems whatsoever using the fingerprint unlock, it is a pretty cool feature. I did notice the screen was not as sensitive for about 5 minutes until the plastic cover built in the case settled down to it.
Jack

I have the defender on mine..no problems so far..yes it makes the phone a little bigger. Its the first time that I am using such a case.
I quickly figured out how to snap it in and out of the belt clip with one hand.

I also have mine in a Defender case - However i ripped out the built in screen protector in the Defender case - those things are lame... I have a screen protector i put on within 10 seconds of opening the box for the phone - my screen has never been touched since taken out of the box...
I have no issues with the Otterbox Defender Case or Holster whatsoever...

Not to hijack the thread but the Otterbox Commuter is an extremely solid case that gives excellent protection without the bulk or the soft exterior of the Defender. I used one on my iPhone 4 for the past 6 months and loved it. Waiting on that model to show up for the Atrix now.

This. I bought my Atrix along with some anti-glares and an Otterbox Defender. I quickly realized how worthless the Otterbox's built-in screen protector is (and how muddy it makes the screen look), and promptly ripped it out. I got used to carrying my Captivate in a Defender, so I was already used to the holstering/unholstering procedure. You do have to make sure not to rub your finger against the shell when using the fingerprint scanner, but it's a pretty easy technique to learn.

ive had quite a few of them there great for protection but forget using it with a dock

Right but I am waiting for it to show up in a store here in San Antonio. No luck so far, hopefully this week.

The only dock I am interested in is the car dock. Will either of the Otterbox cases (defender or commuter) work with the car dock?

No........

Can anyone tell me if the Atrix overheats in an otterbox?
I live near atlanta and it is like a tropical rainforest in the summertime. Humidity and heat off the charts, will my phone melt inside this thing?

It shouldn't. Personally, I think the Atrix runs a little cooler than the iPhones and both my parents have the defenders for their iPhones and neither of them have had any issues.

I don't foresee any heat issues whatsoever with mine. Gets slightly warm sometimes but nothing problematic. In ATL as well.

Otterbox Defender Kickstand Disintegrated!

I've had my Otterbox Defender EVO case for a week now. I picked it up this morning and noticed the plastic kickstand in the back is broken in 4 places.
I have not dropped my EVO nor have I placed anything heavy on top of it. My only conclusion is that this kickstand is a VERY cheap, paper thin piece of plastic and basically disintegrated under normal use.
Now I get to sit on hold with Otterbox for 1/2 hour to try and get my money back. Disappointing as rest of the case is great.

I got the commuter and LOVE IT!!! Love it so much that I sacrifice my extended battery just to use it..
But why the defender.. Isn't it much thicker than the commuter??
Whats the big difference

Bought the Defender for the built-in screen protector. The kick-stand is a joke though. It is literally thin as a sheet of paper. Completely shattered. I have now been on hold for 15 minutes waiting to speak to Otterbox. Grrrr.
Will never buy from these people again.
Good news. I finally got through to Otterbox and they are refunding my money. Apparently the kickstand problem is a known issue and they've been getting some blowback on it.
Too bad. I liked the case otherwise.
Are they paying for the return postage or do you have to?

I don't have to return it at all. I am guessing this has been a HUGE problem and that is why they are being so nice - that or their profit margins are so huge on these things that they are better off just eating a few and maintaining good customer relations than making me return a defective product and having me tell all my friends that they suck.
Their case sucks (the kickstand anyway), but they did right by me.
I called yesterday with a problem of my plastic inner case not snapping closed completely, and they are sending me out a new case nc today...
Yeah, the kickstand is flimsy, but I dont agree its as "thin as a sheet of paper"..
their customer service is top notch, so far....
Yep, I looked at it today and noticed it was cracked so I went ahead and called and they are replacing it for me. I asked if there were any plans on revising it with a metal kickstand and she told me if they get enough complaints then they would but it would take another couple months to do. Great customer service, just wish they would have used metal in the first place.

They offered me a new one but I figured, what's the point? It will just break again. They credited back my money without even asking for the case back. I ordered the Impact which will provide protection but I can still use the EVO kickstand.
I just looked an my Defender again. Lord, that kickstand is destroyed. The weird part is that to this day, I still have no idea what happened to it. One day it was fine and the next day it was shattered. I never dropped it or dropped anything on it.
Who knows. Weird.
The overall case is excellent but the kickstand and the holster are complete disasters. The holster literally rattles when you wear it due to the VERY loose clip on the back. Also, as big as the Defender is, the holster seems two sizes again larger. You could carry a paperback novel in that thing.
Defender - odd mix of awesomeness and complete sucktitude.
Yeah this thing was/is a massive fail from the day one shipping issues to the case (and holster) itself. 8 days of prodding them to get mine and they finally shipped it Overnight. Screen protector giving me the oilslick look so I pulled it off, didn't need 2 anyway. The phone was way loose in the holster so I had to stick some felt pads in there. Today I took the phone & case out of my pocket to show it to somebody and the kick stand was cracked. I haven't even used it because I've been reading about all the broken ones. They had decided not to charge me for the case so I guess I can say it was worth the money.

That's the mysterious part in all this. No one seems to know WHY their kickstands are cracking. Like you, there was no event for me that cracked it. It is almost as if there is a fault in the plastic and it just cracked spontaneously?
I have a feeling that the problem is not in the thinness of the kickstand, but that somehow they got a run of VERY brittle plastic; however, when i pick up what remains of the kickstand and try to break it with my fingers it is very tough and won't break.
Odd.
So it seems that for some reason, the area where the kickstand attaches to the phone is VERY brittle whereas the main body of the kickstand is very tough.
Ah, I see the problem now...
The core of the kickstand on the reverse side is hollowed out. While the kickstand itself is thick and sturdy enough to handle the job, the middle has been shaved down to paper-thin. If there is any twisting of the kickstand at all (like it catches on your pocket fabric as you remove it) that twisting motion puts stress on the weakest part of the stand (the paper thin area between the pins that hold it to the case).
If they had just made the kickstand a solid piece of plastic none of us would even be having this conversation. Since the hollowing out of the kickstand adds nothing to it's functionality and makes it easy to break, one has to wonder why they made that design choice?

After reading what happened to you I won't even try to open the kickstand on mine. As far as the holster is concerned I solved the looseness by small pieces of transparent silicone tape in the inner four corners and it's a snug fit now.
I have done almost everything I could to break mine including bending it pretty good and everything is fine. Doesnt rattle at all and I have opened and closed it over 1000 times.

They sent me a new case and i received it Dec 24, order was placed just a few days earlier by a csr. Was told it had a redesigned kickstand but it is still very similar in design. It is slightly thicker but now has issues with staying locked in when not in use. Durability is tbd.
W t f just used my kickstand 1 time and it popped off.. and I can't get it back in to the slots
from my phone duh

[Q] (Q) What case do you prefer?

I prefer the ballistic case hc solved the oil slick effect using the screen protector they give you. I was wondering what a lot of you folks prefer using I don't mind a slightly bulky case fits great in my hand anyways thanks.
Ballistic by far. I use the optional case at work and drop it down to the inside case for everything else. I love that the holster works either way.
My wife is still happy with the Trident Cyclops.
Both of our Seidio Rugged case's fell apart a long time ago.

How did you mess the screen protector up if you got finger prints on it you can wash it down with glass cleaner or water and put it back on put it on wet and use the your ID or a card to smooth out air bubbles. If you really messed it up id check out ebay man you can probably find a screen protector that work like a champ pre cut. Or go by a zagg screen protector it should work for you i find the bottom part cut out on the stock ballastic screen protector annoying cause everytime you press a key down there it kinda sticks lol tho i have gotten use to it.
I gotta throw a vote in for Seidio Innocase Surface II. Not bulky at all. Leaves all buttons very easy to push. Compatible with their kicka$$ Innocase Car kit (cradle style holder - NOT a cheesy universal fit one). Will it hold up to being dropped from a 3rd story window? Unlikely. Can you throw your phone through a wall with this one? Doubt it. But if you're doing stuff like that with your phone (such silliness that requires a Superman-esq force field) - you really need to rethink having a $500 phone.

I do alot of work in a shop and always leaning over a car and under cars plus anything outdoors mending fences and such kinda need the bulk too keep oil and grease and when your phone might get caught on something and yanked from your side its a good thing to have to keep your screen from getting the snot kicked outta it great for keep dust out. Ive seen the case your talking about there a good brand. Really depends on what you need and suit of taste. Ballistic case is rugged great for not in the office sort of jobs and lifestyle.

Gumdrop Rugged Case

Has anyone used a ruggedized case? I bring my tablet EVERYWHERE and need something decent to protect it and was thinking about the Gumdrop cases. Any suggestions?
I use the Gform Extreme Sleeve 2 for extra protection. It says it fits the Ipad but I can confirm that it will fit the galaxy tab even with the stock book case on it. This is the best combination of protection and comfortable usability I have found.
It is kinda spendy but I bought both cases on ebay for less than retail and the samsung book case is definitely not necessary.

Always been curious about these cases that look like tires. Is there any advantage to this over an equally-thick material without the pattern? It seems to me like the tread on this would actually make it more likely to be damaged, not less. There's thin points (for puncture or pressure), and its easier to bend. And though there's probably a small difference in weight (though minimal; the heavier outer coating is larger than if it was flat), I can't imagine the tread makes it more fun to put into or take out of a bag. I've never used one though so I'm curious if there's something I'm not considering.

There's something you've not considered. I think the design helps with the shock displacement. Maybe not, but it's what I figure.
Have you watched the videos? This is one a$$ saving case. LOL
If you're as tough on your tab as in the videos you crazy, but then again, stranger sh!t has happened on accident.

I have one and love it. I got one for my daughter's kindle, too. It does have a built in screen protector but I didn't install it for my case (affects screen responsiveness and feels crappy). The screen is protected from being recessed behind protruding, reinforced edges, so if i drop it it won't break anyway. Also, the case prevents accidentally hitting the power button, which used to drive me crazy. I take my tab to work everyday...get lots of compliments on the case. The material and ridges let me sit it on my couch or lap and not slide out of position. They also feel nice in the hands. I have an otterbox defender case for my evo4g. That's a great case, but I recommend this grippier type of material instead for a tablet. My phone case lets me slide in and out of my pocket easily, but i want traction with my tablet case. I also tried one of those folding tablet cases, but they seem ridiculous to me.
I have the white gumdrop case for my tab 10.1. As far as protection it is great. The corners are reinforced and it has a built in screen protector. You will have no doubt that your tab is very well protected inside this case. It also offers a LOT more grip and security in your hands. The only downside it that is easily doubles the thickness and weight of your tab. With this case on you can easily drop, throw, bang etc.. without even a thought of damaging your tab.
I love my Gumdrop! I wrote an in-depth review if you want to check it out, with more pictures and details then you can shake a stick at, lol.

I got a gumdrop case shortly after I got my tab 10.1, Love it. The silicon cover is very thick especially on the corners, the frame is solid and fits on the tab well, the cover and frame fit together very solid, and the screen protector is actually pretty good. It makes the whole setup look very clean, and my touchscreen is still very responsive with the gumdrop screen protector AND a static adhesive screen protector on.
tldr gumdrop A+

Sorry for the delay, I am working on my capstone project for an EE degree and I have not been on the internets for fun since sunday.
I cannot say I would be able to point out any major advantages between the current design and one that is equally thick throughout, I would probably guess weight and cost. I believe the case is made of a fancy foam that stiffens on impact and does not seem like there is much of an outer coating over the foam but I have not yet cut into mine to find out.
The "tread" really has not caused me any problems getting this into or out of my backpack. The case is not frictiony like rubber but not so slippery that I am afraid to drop it when I carry it around either. I would say they found a happy medium between fly paper and a greased watermelon.
Overall I am very happy with this case and I recommend it to anyone who needs some heavy duty protection. I am even considering buying one for my laptop!
I got mine today left the screen protector off I have a zagg on mine super case I'm going to order one for the wifes Asus transformer

I got my Tab last Fall and a Samsung Book Case shortly afterward. I had looked at the Gumdrop case and thought it'd be good to have, but didn't pull the trigger. That was a big mistake.
My son decided to grab the Tab from the kitchen counter & play games on it in the family room, but the dropped it on the tile floor before he got to the couch. I ended up with a $200 repair bill for a new screen. Needless to say, I had a Gumdrop waiting to be put on the tablet as soon as the repair was complete. This thing feels sturdy & strong. I just wish I had bought the case when I first saw it. I'd be $150 richer.
Got my gumdrop last week and really like it wasn't to sure bout the screen protector at first but its very responsive. Def worth the $.

I ordered one yesterday and then saw this thread. I checked this forum for case info before but didn't see the gumdrop case mentioned. I found it googling rubber corners galaxy tab 10.1.
Great to see positive reviews. Two concerns I have are:
- could the rubber case interfere with the wifi antenna?
- could the battery/electronics get too hot in it under normal conditions?
I notice that when you put your hand on the corner near the power button, the back and front get warm with no case. I imagine the glass acts as a heatsink. If you feel around the warm corner it doesn't spread to the rest of the glass. When I get the case I'll see if the warm area seems bigger.
In the manual it recs use in the temp range O-45c. I searched to see if 10.1's have overheating issues and I see anything to indicate that.
I've had the Gumdrop case on my Tab for about two months now & I've never had overheating issues.

Cheers, good to hear.
I just read somewhere that someone said that a silicone cover on their phone caused wifi loss, but others tested theirs and didn't have any loss.
I haven't noticed a decrease in my wifi reception. It works the same at home, the office, & in public spots like the coffee shop.
I don't think you'll notice any negative issues with the case other than added bulk & weight. Those are a fair trade for the better protection you'll get from the case.
Great, I'll do a proper test when I get it. I should try it with my Samsung Book Cover case as well.
I figure the thickness and security of it might make it easier to hold for long periods despite the weight. I like the idea of being able to grip it by the raised edge while carrying it, and I think I'll now have the confidence to bring it places and let other ppl actually play with it!
It looks like it might even survive a fall down stairs which even iBallz wouldn't
Hey NexVision
Which Gumdrop case fits your P7500? They don't list it on the site and it would suck to get a case and the buttons don't line up. Everywhere I look there seems to be a hundred different model #s (for each carrier, 4G and wifi only etc) and nothing seems to list which models are similar.
I want to chime in here with nothing more than +1 to everything positive mentioned here and No, I haven't had any of the problems asked about in this thread either.

OtterBox Armor Review

Bought this case new from ebay knowing about its few problems being reported like the proximity sensor, call problems, and audio issues, but still preferred this over the lifeproof simply for its protection. When i first received it, my initial reaction was "wow, its here, and its HUGE!" But i carefully disassembled it and clean it out just in case, water tested it (passed), dried it off, and finally put my phone in its new suit of armor. It really made the phone huge, and i mean huge, but i honestly dont mind the added bulk because of its substantial protection and it still feels very comfy in hand and doesnt hinder the phones functionality at all. Speaker for music also plays very loudly and crystal clear unlike other reviewers have stated. I think its a great case to buy and kind of essential if you have a very physically active life. Now to the cons (although their aren't many): Unlike many other reviewers of the white version have stated, i dont have call proximity issues, only thing that happens related to proximity is when i turn the phone over to face down while playing music, it pauses, but thats expected because i had that motion option enabled. Next, phone calls work fine and i hear people just fine, but the caller on the other end may have a problem hearing you sometimes. But it rarely happens and most times they can hear you. Easy fixes are bluetooth and earphones. Lastly, the home button definitely requires more pressure to press and the menu/back "buttons" are a little harder to get to but you'll get used to it. Thats the only thing "wrong" with this case honestly and its still excellent to have. I would highly recommend it. If you dont mind a little bulk, get it. Again, great great case :good:
I have a brand new one in original packaging from otterbox if anyone wants, contact me through dm or 6785162209
Personally speaking, at that kind of bulk, I'd rather shove in a 7200mAh Anker. Protection is nice and all but severely handicaps the phone IMO. If you like bulk, might as well triple your battery life.
Furthermore, if it does get scratched/cracked/broken, it's fairly easy to replace (for most members here). For example, you can swap the camera lens for a few bucks if it does get scratched.
I've had my GS3 for almost two years now. Been completely nude the whole time. No screen protector, nothing. There are many surface scratches on the screen which you can only see if you look at it while the screen is off under a super, super bright light. Doesn't affect the image quality at all. Outside frame (the gray part) is a little cracked in few places. Not a big deal.
Runs flawless on CM 10.2.1. Undervolted almost 100mV across the board.
I used to be OCD, but decided to save my health instead.

I myself looked for waterproof. I too believe as you do and went naked on previous phones. But now with a toddler and my part time job in swimming pool service, waterproof was the selling point.

I personally liked the armor series for my S3. I only stopped using mine due to needing to put my phone in my pocket and the armor didn't quite fit the bill. I use my lifeproof nud for daily use at work but when out playing around or working at the house I still use my armor series. And you definitely can't beat the otterbox warranty.

The only thing that makes me take mines off from time to time are the back and menu buttons but once i have it on it rarely comes off. And yea otterbox has great customer service imo. I love my case

Fair enough. I suppose we don't always have ideal circumstances to our liking.

LOL...I love my phone being slim and I can live with scratches. But after a few near misses with my toddler son and getting soaked a couple of times on the job, I decided I would have to give in. Bring without my phone even for a day would screw up my schedule. Amazing how much I depend on it.

I've also bought this case and it turned out to be just what I was looking for. Before I've had Griffin survivor which would be good enough for me except two things, it was not that easy to remove (I prefer naked S3 while not in a hostile environment) and it scratched my S3. After the latter happened I've immediately sold it.
But the reason to post is for everyone with menu/back/home buttons problem. After a proper inspection I've found out that the back cover of the case doesn't give enough support for installed phone. If the phone is fully pushed into the case there is approximately 1.5mm gap between the phone and the back cover. So after first push on menu/back/home button even if the phone is inserted all the way in to the case, the phone backs up a little and that gap moves from the back to the front. In order to solve this problem I've ordered 1.5mm thick silicone sponge to fill the gap between the phone and the back cover. One thing that bothers me about this is that waterproofness of the case might be broken if 1.5mm thick sponge is too much and even bigger problem is how test waterproofness as I don't want to sacrifice my phone. I'll report any pros or cons about my modification. If it solves this problem I'll post some pictures of modification.
I've had the Acase Superleggera Pro Dual Protection Case on my S3 since I bought it and I love it. I've dropped it so many times and not noticed any difference in performance. And it's not super bulky like the other 2 layer cases. It's also less than $10 at Amazon these days.

I tested its waterproof function without phone first and then finally just did it repeatedly with the phone and it hasnt failed me yet, hopefully never. And also ive noticed this gap, i wouldnt recommend filling it because it may compromise as u stated

For everyday protection sure it may be good, but when it comes to 10ft drop, water, being hit, stomped on, and numerous other things, the armor case is the best.

As I've said if not in hostile environment in my case this is mostly dusty air and greasy surfaces, I prefer my S3 naked. So Otterbox Armor is needed.

I tried with 1.5 mm foam and it was just a little too much. Now I am waiting for 1mm which I think it should work. As I've already said, in my case waterproofness is not really needed but I wouldn't like to brake it. Will report again.

I finally got 2mm foam as 1mm is hard to get. 2mm foam goes into gaps between ribs on the rubber on the back cover of the case. So this just might do the trick as the case closes ok.
The for the review, I have an Otterbox Defender and love it to death, but I've been thinking of buying one of these.
i have the Acase Superleggera Pro Dual Protection Case on my S3 and it is great!
Just got my new otterbox armor today!! Love it so far! Any way to tell if it's legit and not a fake? Lol... Paranoid I guess?

Any "otterbox" like cases

I've looked quite a bit and cant really find any good cases that are like otterbox. Its not that i want an otterbox. I just would like something similar that covers up all the ports on the phone. There only seem to be 3. Maxboost hybrid, trident and i bason i think. But they seem to be cheap and dont fully cover the ports. I already have the maxboost, witch is ok, but its pretty cheap, and every time i pull it out of my pocket the bottom half slides off and i have to slide it back in place. Why is there no otterbox? They got something against the N5?, they even got a moto g case. Its all about the $$$

I just bought this, from fleabay, Cant really tell you too much, never had an otterbox..
I can tell you its pretty cool, and the front screen protector is nice, doesnt hinder touch too much
The problem you are going to most likely have with the ballistic (because I certainly do) is the need to remove it once a week or so due to the level of dust that somehow manages to transfer from inside your pocket or anywhere else to under the protector. Unlike an otterbox which actually tries to keep dust out at the top, this is a wide open door. Also, it takes some getting used to looking at the case because of how much the 4 corners bulge out - definitely not the prettiest case around.
But I fully appreciate this case for what it does do right - I have dropped my N5 on concrete numerous times and it's sometimes funny to show off how good of a case it is to people I meet by just saying "oops" and dropping it from shoulder height onto pretty much any surface below. See the looks on peoples faces - worth the money right there. Lol

Ya thats one i saw also. It isnt very appealing.
Just received this hybrid a couple days ago and do far loving it. Tight fit, no play, covers all ports, not lint magnet, nice hard tpu inner and a decent built-in screen protector.

None of them are appealing to me. Even otterbox. On any phone. Just ugly.

Spigen Slim Armor, I have been using it for months. Looks great, protects well, and doesn't add much size to the phone. $15 for the smooth black, great deal
http://www.spigen.com/nexus-5-case-slim-armor.html
Looks arent as important to me, im just worried about the protection of the phone and ports
Most people haven't heard of it but Siedio makes amazing full body protective cases.
Search Google for the Seidio Convert Combo Case Nexus 5. (I'd give you a link but I have 2g right now)
The case makes your nexus 5 a little bulky, but not much heavier ime. It has covers for the ports and its a 3 layer case with a good quality screen protector included.
Honestly, I believe that the Spigen Slim Armor is quite overpriced for what you get. i say this having actually bought one myself. The software is totally rubbish. Also, since it depends on using the proximity sensor to activate the screen, it causes numerous issues with that as well. you could always use it without the software, but it still doesn't change the fact that you just paid $45 for a piece of plastic with a hinge.
+1 on the seidio convert case. I just got it from the android central store during one of their last sales and I love it. It comes with the seidio surface hard shell case with kickstand which is pretty slim and protective on its own, but it also comes with the thicker rubber outer case and hard shell for structure and more protection (and protects/covers the ports), plus it comes with a locking holster that you can switch mounting attachments on between the standard belt clip, or the car mount, running arm band, bike handle bar mount (sold separately).
The case is awesome, I couldn't say more good things about it, great shock protection, great dust protection, light water protection, great button response, and the ability the simply use the surface case in its own right makes this well worth the money!
