[Q] too many issues wih new DHD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys
I have had HTC phones for a long time and generally beed happy eith them .
This in not true with my new DHD.
I have alist of issues and want to know if they are hardware or software.
Rubbish speaker - much more tinny then Hero
Low volume - less the Hero
sometimes no volume
can record HD video but cant play back on phone
now video app bombs out when trying to record HD video.
HD recording is atrociuos
My girlfriend got the samsung galaxy S ( smaller hands- smaller phone)
and its much better, even plays flv
Could this be a Hardware fault or have peeps managed to resolve this with different roms?
Your help is much appreciated

The quality of the speaker is hardware caused. Nothing you can do about it expect not using it. Seriously, I think it's not meant for listening to music with it. I always use headphones or my PC to playback video.
The volume is low, I was also very disapppointed with it especially as I was almost unable to listen to audiobooks while being outside with my headphones even though volume was to 100 %. Good news is, there's a solution: Get a custom ROM like Revolution HD. It boosts the volume. I also got 16 Ohm headphones and now I have the volume down to 30 % where before 100 % wasn't sufficient.
Of course for flashing a custom ROM you need to root/s-off your phone. But there are 1-click apps for this fortunately.
And for playing flv, I never tried it but there will surely be an app that can do it. Same for HD playback.
But you have to consider, even though your girlfriend's phone plays HD the display still doesn't support HD resolutions same as the DHD doesn't. So the video will have to be scaled down. But I'm pretty sure there are apps for that problem as well.
So bottomline, the speaker quality and HD recording quality is something you have to live with. All else can be dealt with by apps/ROMs.
And if you're really not satisfied, you might consider returning the DHD and getting a Galaxy S. Both are great phones and it can well be you'll like the Galaxy more.

RockPlayer plays pretty much every format FFmpeg can decode. Sometimes it is a bit buggy though, like sound out of sync, but nothing major. I suggest you give it a try.

There are thousands of flash players on the market that can play flv.... and there is not one phone in the world with the screen resolution for HD playback. lol

I read that it won't play the HD recorded video back very smoothly because of the cheap and slow SD card they give you with the phone.
Try a faster good quality SD card, Class 6 should work better.

Best Video playback settings/performance of Desire?

Dear Desire users, it's no doubt that one of the points of getting Desire is to use for movies playback, what's your best conversion setting found so far for SMOOTH and HIGH REG. playback?
I've tried various settings and found
Resolution: 720p
Avg. Video Bitrate: 3000k (2500k runs a bit smoother but with noticeable lower picture quality)
Avg. Audio Bitrate: 192k
running pretty well on short HD movie trailer. (just a slight lag while playing w/ HTC album)
Yet, I found Act1 player plays the same file a little bit smoother, is it my illusion?

If you are converting movies specifically to run on your Desire, why bother with 720p when the screen doesn't support that resolution?
I can only really understand it if you are converting for use on other devices that do support that resolution and don't want to duplicate the effort.

Dave

valid point Dave, however, some HD video sources I got got some real "wide" resolutions, such as 1280x532, having the aspect ratio of 2.406, the clip ended up with two black bar on the top and bottom of the screen, that's why I would choose to encode into 720p so that I would got much lost while Zooming in while watching~
besides, I've tried to encoded the same file with same bitrate (3000k), the file size only dropped from 59mb to 57mb, I don't know the reason but I guess the machine speed quite similar effort in rendering both clips right?
please drop some more thoughts guys!
I use the Nexus One defaults from Any DVD Converter:
x264
800x480
1200kbps
25fps
1 encode pass
AAC
128kbps/44kHz
Converting from 1080p source. Looks awesome. Wouldn't bother with higher bitrates, personally.
Daern
Isn't a 3000k bitrate massive overkill for a phone anyway?
I encode my video to iPod Touch presets on Handbrake, so my wife can use the same files on her iPod.
Playing these videos on the Desire is more than adequate visually even at a much lower than native resolution (for my needs at least) and the total bitrate is usually between 550kbps and 600kbps.

Dave

I personally wouldnt bother with converting. My crummy pentium m laptop wouldnt be able to convert it in a satisfying timeframe anyway.
still hoping that one point in the future a better ndk which would allow access to the gpu video acceleration will allow spiffy stuff like hd video (through coreplayer maybe)

Don't watch any movies on my PHONE, nor play music - it was never a point of me getting it so that statement is a bit off
Watching a film on a tiny screen is the last thing I want to do - besides, battery would die in a couple of hours

Dear Daern & Dave, I admit using 3000k is just kinda trying to test how far the Desire could take, smart people saying that even though the phone can handle it, the battery won't stay long for running massive data, 1200kbps might be just fine for the balance between quality/battery life. but besides battery life, it's absolutely glad to see our Desire could render a 3000k 720p video (without almost un-noticeable flame drops - tested with "bare-eye"). it's impressive. (while my Blackstone could only take around 700-900kbps.

Dear EddyOS, since there aren't too much driving in a tiny place like Hong Kong, movies/favorite TV shows could actually do me some good while riding on a train or bus. Meanwhile, catching some clips in the bath room while handling "big" business is also good.
yet, I have to admit that, I've been surfing multiple Android websites for news and tweaks, and Froyo whenever I got time. hoping that one day I would jump into a web telling me HTC had released its Froyo update for our new (but already old) Desire.

Do you have problems with the HDMI-NHL out?

I've been using it for a week now and a lot of the 1280x720 movies are freezing from time to time. It seems like the phone struggles to output them.
When i watch them on the phone directly (without the nhl-hdmi adapter) it's significantly better but still misses frames here and there. That goes for both the hardware and software decoding.
It was supposed to do that fluently right?
Any advices on how to have steady HD experience?

BoomSound? Blah!

I just got done reading a majority of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243207
Anyone else disappointed in the volume levels?
Quite honestly my ringtones are deafening but when I open up Play Music it really isn't all that loud and I really was expecting more.
I've always noticed that Play Music was lower-quality and more compressed sounding than comparable services like Spotify. Try loading up a high-quality MP3 on your phone and use a media player, I think you will see the difference is night and day.
I took your advice, I'm not so sure that made much of a difference.
I grabbed a file from my Dropbox of one of the artists I mix/master for which was 320kbps, played it in the HTC Music player instead of Play Music and it wasn't much different.
That is what you suggested, correct?
Yeah. Not sure why it seems underwhelming for you then. I just turned my volume to 100% and it was crazy loud, and I don't have the best hearing.
I may visit my store today and try their demo unit to see what I think because it really is quite disappointing.
It's loud, don't get me wrong. it's just not LOUD like I expected it to be.
just a quick question - what did you EXPECT? When you watch a youtube video, you also have to keep in mind that your speakers are probably ALREADY outputting at their own volume level. so you arent actually hearing how loud the boomsound is yourself. I think mine are extremely loud, but I'm basing it off of the sound I hear from other phones, not the sound I heard when watching all of the video reviews.
And my first line isnt in any way meant to sound rude. I'm just honestly asking what you were expecting so we can get a better look at whether the speakers are actually quiet, or if you just thought they'd be louder

No offense taken whatsoever. Honestly, I've had every top tier phone imaginable from Verizon. (perks of being a store manager for a indirect retailer)
I'd say that the volume levels are about on par with the others, just blown in a different direction. I mean with a name like "BoomSound" I guess I expected them to be quite a bit louder. It's really no louder than the S4 I just got rid of a couple of days ago. Quality is great, volume not so much.
yeah if its 'on-par' with the others then there's something wrong. I just startled my mom down the hall playing music on google play at max volume...not even kidding
Well when my girlfriend wakes her ass up I'll play the same song, same app, from her iPhone 5 at the same time and give it a good comparison, maybe I'll even try to do a video with my DSLR
Mine is very loud. Almost as good as a cheap Bluetooth speaker. Sounds like your mp3 files may have been recorded at low volume.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
No that's far from the problem, I think. I've tried my own tracks (I have Pro Tools and all that jazz). I've tried streaming. I've tried YouTube. I've tried just about everything I can think of. They're not that loud.
After looking at that thread, I can confirm that the volume doesn't change much if at all after 50%, which is weird. I guess it doesn't really bother me though, since I mostly use headphones. After doing some reading, seems like most people are saying the phone's volume is comparable to other phones, but louder in noisier places due to the boosted mids brought on by Beats Audio.

Could we turn beats off and then install a sound appnlike Viper?? I had that on my s4 and it was sick!!
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda premium
i can definitely tell you there is a difference between volume level - even above 50%
Something is wrong I think...
I agree. I played a song at 50% then cranked it up, it definitely got louder. Still not what I think it should be. I'm saving down a real quick clip that I did that will show it. In the video, it doesn't really prove my point much but in person there is next to no difference.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
I'll see if I can record a video as well of mine for you to compare.
I might go up to the Verizon store later to compare it with their display model. If there is a difference, I will definitely exchange it before waiting to see if 4.3 addresses any of the problems. On mine, the speaker volume doesn't really reflect noticeable change between 50-100% unless you really listen for it.
I use PowerAmp and this thing is very loud and sounds great. It isn't a home stereo system but it is very very good.
I realize that I probably should have recorded them playing separately for the video to better prove my point, but here's the little video that I did.

[Q] Stutter, lag, choppy 4k video recording on LG G3

One of the reasons why I bought this phone was for the 4K recording. I have severe stuttering when recording 4k clips with the 5 min cap. This is very annoying. Furthermore, the phone heats up like a bastard, so much so that it almost feels too hot to touch, like it may explode or just melt.
I have the international unlocked version and I am in the UK. In the past 2 months, I have received 2 software updates for power management but that has not helped at all, battery is terrible. When you record 4k, it drops like a ***** almost 10 percent every minute and continues to go down while the phone tries to come back to normal temps.
I have changed the runtime to ART and back to give it a try and its no better. Also did this mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/mod-root-rid-lag-g3-t2819365/page31
With the hidden menus but its not really giving me a boost in processing power and better temperatures. I have searched for a few days now and cannot find anyone with similar issues and I have seen a lot of issues, so starting a thread here.
Please help!
I think the heating while recording a 4k video is a common issue. On my G3,the CPU reachs 67-70°C,hotter than when playing Asphalt 8 and this causes a big battery drain.
For the first question,in poor words the 4k-recorded videos have some lags?
Inviato dal mio Lg G3 con tapataaalk
Thanks for replying. The issue is not recorded video, it's pretty choppy "while" recording 4k. It's choppy playing back the same videos too and consistent to the stutters experienced while recording. The playback stutters at the same place where recording stuttered if that makes sense. I don't think there is an issue with playback but recording.
I am not sure why this happens as it didn't seem to happen when I bought the phone, can it be the software updates for power optimization to blame?
yup i've seen the stutter on playback but only when i play the 4k videos on my laptop.
but on default player in g3 phone, there is none.
in my experience, choppiness when recording vids was due to slow microsd.
i always try to set the recorded vids to internal sd after that.
When my class-10 micro sd arrives,i'll try 4k recording and see if there's struttering...and compare the videos with the other ones made with a class-4 micro sd
Inviato dal mio Lg G3 con tapataaalk
Yeah.. They didn't add the 5 minute cap for the beauty of it. The phone will heat the crap up with 4K.
I don't have issues with stuttering, though I use a class 10 sdcard
------------------
Hey, small add here. I took the phone off the wireless charger (had 100%) and started recording a 4K video. Phone got lukewarm (like browsing on facebook for a long time on 4G). Battery went from 100% to.. well, 100%. But 100% is a bit tough to break, but it when it shows 99%, it's a straight drop from there. No stuttering at all too.
Class 4 is not enough. Class 10 may not be enough either. If you want to record 4k directly to MicroSD, you better buy those "extreme" memorycards. They cost more but trust me, even Class 10 may not be enough.
Oh and by the way, rebooting the device every once and a while is highly recommended.

yeah, truly so, there may be tons of zombie processes, doing stuff in background and messing with SoC, distracting it from encoding process thus causing stutters
Oh trust me guys u have tried rebooting every 5 mins to see if there were no issues. Did factory reset too and it was slightly better. Maybe there were indeed some zombie processes to blame here and I think the sd cards are also n issue. I have now gotten rid of the phone. Too buggy and not optimised. I am now waiting my nexus 6. I hope the camera is at least as good as LG. On my previous nexus devices the camera has been pants.
Nexus 6 and 4k movie
Nexus 6 just can not handle it. I posted a 4K to Facebook and it ended up as junk. I then immediately deleted it. Set Nexus 6 to HD 1080p and forget about the future of 4k in Nexus 6 for now.
GTMoraes: Hi, saw your comment about wishing your G3 had a lower 1080p resolution. Wish I could remember exactly where on these forums, but someone had a couple of lines you can enter in terminal to specify the resolution you prefer for the screen. He said it made the screen faster and the power draw less than the 1440p it's on now. I knew I should have written it down.

My Experience with Yu Yureka (Using since a week Now)

My experience so far after using it for 1 day
1) Camera quality: Its good at this price range the clarity is amazing as well as the sharpness front is also great(think about the price first before commenting in negative)
2) Video recording and playback: Video recording quality is really amazing it has capability to record in 1080x1920 and while playing any videos i has great viewing angles
3) Performance: So far i haven't faced any sort of lags i am using this device heavily and my multi task is loaded with full of apps still no lag
4) Battery: To be honest i am really happy with the battery performance i don't know about others, using with full brightness wifi on and continuously downloading and i charged only yesterday to 100% and till now it drops to 69% so i don't think battery will be an issue for people
5) Benchmarks: Got above 32000 score in Antutu,55 fps in Nenamark had tried only these two
6) Gaming: Played asphalt 8, modern combat 5 walking dead season 2 grand theft auto san andreas all on high graphics haven't found any lag apart from a little frame drop in san andreas rest totally amazing gaming experience
7) Storage: All installed application and apps data got downloaded in internal storage which is 16gb but we can move them in the external storage apart from the game data.
8) Call quality: Calling experience was great no issue so far
9) Heating issue: Not much only minor heating issue if paying heavy games rest no major heating issue
10) Audio: The only thing which disappoint me is the audio quality as the ring tone for incoming call and audio video plaback from the speakers is low,it might create some problem for some people, and rest from the headset it will damage your ear be careful
Conclusion: BEFORE COMMENTING IN NEGATIVE DO CHECK THE PRICE AND WHAT THIS DEVICE OFFERS WHICH HAS THE CAPABILITY TO COMPETE WITH HTC OPO AND OTHER MOBILE AT ABOVE 20000 RUPEES
Thanks 4 ur Review.

Salcykhan, You're just describing too much! Internal Speaker is so loud that you can hear it from far in a quiet room... Camera Quality is good, Low Light Pics are great, at least Look at its price. Screen is clear, 1280x720 is good for playing HD games... Might be problem in your Handset...
I haven't experienced any bug yet, the Double tap Wake up is all working Fine...
And even if there's a bug, Man! There's a software update option. Looks Like you forgot...
Regards
N'ayam
I faced a few software problems like the lockscreen wallpaper changes to default, even after setting Swiftkey as the default keyboard and using it for some time it chages back to default
and also the phone charges upto 99% but never to 100% I found that if we remove the cable and plug it again it shows 100%.
Some said photosphere works once. but on second time they need to force stop and clear data for google camera,
Then it takes them .. also only 1A charger for 615 device so itz taking 3 hrs to charge
proxy issue with scratch guard.. some one said to tighten screw below proxy sensor
52.C . Temp while gaming for 30 min.
i'm hearing a lot abt this device ? are these true

Salcykhan, you are great yaar......you said people are running to service center.......where is yureka service center ???? According to company policy, they are giving onsite warranty......if u complain over phone....some technician will come to your place and will try repairing it, and if it is not serviceable at your place....they will take the phone, repair it and will hand it over to you at your place....
Some problems that u r not facing..........you have written.....what are u trying to prove ? The other problems that u have written............I never faced........I'm also using yureka for last 8 days.........
Can u show me a phone of same specification at this price range or even 3k bucks more ??????????
Brother just wait and watch, my phone already at the service center.
Anyway, now i will only buy "sagyus v2" father of all phone- but for that i have wait till june i guess
Remove your sim card and start yureka without sim card and check the battery level
My battery was about 70% then i restarted without sim card and the battery was 15% then it was increasing to 17..18..19%

yup, the low light photography is grainy, but video recording & pics taken on gud lighting is excellent. sharp & focused.
Can't find any issues with screen clarity for a 720p screen. It has gud color reproduction & tonality.
The biggest issue is ext. speaker. Jeez, tht just muffled. Can barely hear anything well even on full volume in a low crowded room.
The earphones i got had decent quality, loud & punchy... no issues there. Call quality also good, the speaker sounds gud & can hear the conversation well even on mid volume settings.
Gaming with high end games was mostly lag free, the fone heats up considerably (but manageable) during extended gaming & camera usage, but thn which fone doesn't?

Rooting does not increase the volume. After rooting you can have access to the system files where you can make some changes that increases the ringtone volumes to acceptable levels.
