[Q] Stutter, lag, choppy 4k video recording on LG G3 - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of the reasons why I bought this phone was for the 4K recording. I have severe stuttering when recording 4k clips with the 5 min cap. This is very annoying. Furthermore, the phone heats up like a bastard, so much so that it almost feels too hot to touch, like it may explode or just melt.
I have the international unlocked version and I am in the UK. In the past 2 months, I have received 2 software updates for power management but that has not helped at all, battery is terrible. When you record 4k, it drops like a ***** almost 10 percent every minute and continues to go down while the phone tries to come back to normal temps.
I have changed the runtime to ART and back to give it a try and its no better. Also did this mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/mod-root-rid-lag-g3-t2819365/page31
With the hidden menus but its not really giving me a boost in processing power and better temperatures. I have searched for a few days now and cannot find anyone with similar issues and I have seen a lot of issues, so starting a thread here.
Please help!

I think the heating while recording a 4k video is a common issue. On my G3,the CPU reachs 67-70°C,hotter than when playing Asphalt 8 and this causes a big battery drain.
For the first question,in poor words the 4k-recorded videos have some lags?
Inviato dal mio Lg G3 con tapataaalk

Thanks for replying. The issue is not recorded video, it's pretty choppy "while" recording 4k. It's choppy playing back the same videos too and consistent to the stutters experienced while recording. The playback stutters at the same place where recording stuttered if that makes sense. I don't think there is an issue with playback but recording.

I am not sure why this happens as it didn't seem to happen when I bought the phone, can it be the software updates for power optimization to blame?

yup i've seen the stutter on playback but only when i play the 4k videos on my laptop.
but on default player in g3 phone, there is none.
in my experience, choppiness when recording vids was due to slow microsd.
i always try to set the recorded vids to internal sd after that.

When my class-10 micro sd arrives,i'll try 4k recording and see if there's struttering...and compare the videos with the other ones made with a class-4 micro sd
Inviato dal mio Lg G3 con tapataaalk

Yeah.. They didn't add the 5 minute cap for the beauty of it. The phone will heat the crap up with 4K.
I don't have issues with stuttering, though I use a class 10 sdcard
------------------
Hey, small add here. I took the phone off the wireless charger (had 100%) and started recording a 4K video. Phone got lukewarm (like browsing on facebook for a long time on 4G). Battery went from 100% to.. well, 100%. But 100% is a bit tough to break, but it when it shows 99%, it's a straight drop from there. No stuttering at all too.

Class 4 is not enough. Class 10 may not be enough either. If you want to record 4k directly to MicroSD, you better buy those "extreme" memorycards. They cost more but trust me, even Class 10 may not be enough.
Oh and by the way, rebooting the device every once and a while is highly recommended.

Highly recommend Samsung Class10 64Gb Pro UHS-I MB-MG64DA/AM, they easily can write up to 80Mb/sec on USB 3.0 cardreader, trust me I checked myself

yeah, truly so, there may be tons of zombie processes, doing stuff in background and messing with SoC, distracting it from encoding process thus causing stutters

Oh trust me guys u have tried rebooting every 5 mins to see if there were no issues. Did factory reset too and it was slightly better. Maybe there were indeed some zombie processes to blame here and I think the sd cards are also n issue. I have now gotten rid of the phone. Too buggy and not optimised. I am now waiting my nexus 6. I hope the camera is at least as good as LG. On my previous nexus devices the camera has been pants.

Nexus 6 and 4k movie
Nexus 6 just can not handle it. I posted a 4K to Facebook and it ended up as junk. I then immediately deleted it. Set Nexus 6 to HD 1080p and forget about the future of 4k in Nexus 6 for now.

GTMoraes: Hi, saw your comment about wishing your G3 had a lower 1080p resolution. Wish I could remember exactly where on these forums, but someone had a couple of lines you can enter in terminal to specify the resolution you prefer for the screen. He said it made the screen faster and the power draw less than the 1440p it's on now. I knew I should have written it down.

[Q] too many issues wih new DHD

Guys
I have had HTC phones for a long time and generally beed happy eith them .
This in not true with my new DHD.
I have alist of issues and want to know if they are hardware or software.
Rubbish speaker - much more tinny then Hero
Low volume - less the Hero
sometimes no volume
can record HD video but cant play back on phone
now video app bombs out when trying to record HD video.
HD recording is atrociuos
My girlfriend got the samsung galaxy S ( smaller hands- smaller phone)
and its much better, even plays flv
Could this be a Hardware fault or have peeps managed to resolve this with different roms?
Your help is much appreciated
The quality of the speaker is hardware caused. Nothing you can do about it expect not using it. Seriously, I think it's not meant for listening to music with it. I always use headphones or my PC to playback video.
The volume is low, I was also very disapppointed with it especially as I was almost unable to listen to audiobooks while being outside with my headphones even though volume was to 100 %. Good news is, there's a solution: Get a custom ROM like Revolution HD. It boosts the volume. I also got 16 Ohm headphones and now I have the volume down to 30 % where before 100 % wasn't sufficient.
Of course for flashing a custom ROM you need to root/s-off your phone. But there are 1-click apps for this fortunately.
And for playing flv, I never tried it but there will surely be an app that can do it. Same for HD playback.
But you have to consider, even though your girlfriend's phone plays HD the display still doesn't support HD resolutions same as the DHD doesn't. So the video will have to be scaled down. But I'm pretty sure there are apps for that problem as well.
So bottomline, the speaker quality and HD recording quality is something you have to live with. All else can be dealt with by apps/ROMs.
And if you're really not satisfied, you might consider returning the DHD and getting a Galaxy S. Both are great phones and it can well be you'll like the Galaxy more.
RockPlayer plays pretty much every format FFmpeg can decode. Sometimes it is a bit buggy though, like sound out of sync, but nothing major. I suggest you give it a try.
There are thousands of flash players on the market that can play flv.... and there is not one phone in the world with the screen resolution for HD playback. lol

I read that it won't play the HD recorded video back very smoothly because of the cheap and slow SD card they give you with the phone.
Try a faster good quality SD card, Class 6 should work better.

Do you have problems with the HDMI-NHL out?

I've been using it for a week now and a lot of the 1280x720 movies are freezing from time to time. It seems like the phone struggles to output them.
When i watch them on the phone directly (without the nhl-hdmi adapter) it's significantly better but still misses frames here and there. That goes for both the hardware and software decoding.
It was supposed to do that fluently right?
Any advices on how to have steady HD experience?

Note 4 - 4k Video Quality

This is for anyone looking to get the Note 4 and wanted a sample of the Video quality. The video is done though the Note 4, and nothing was modified or changed in anyway.
You can also get a few photo samples here: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Camera Samples So far the phones camera is awesome in my option.

what color you get?
I went with White. First time too. Had a black Note 3, Black iPhones, Dark red Galaxy S3. I guess we will see how it goes. Also depends on the case I end up with
I feel like with a stable camera mount and high quality external mic you could actually make a beautiful low budget film with this thing! If cameras are getting this good, I'm excited to see what the future holds in store for us all

True but there will never be a good low light phone camera unless the sensor is half of the phone.
If you were a profession, and has everything then I wouldn't see why you can't use this as a 4k video camera.

They don't seem to advertise that aspect of it.
When you start recording in 4k, notice that it tells you how much time remains, and it says five minutes. At the end of five minutes, it stops recording.

It's not like any movie films scenes longer then five mins at a time. Film for a couple mins, then end scene and start again. I have never scene Hollywood roll camera for more then a couple minutes at a time. The only down side would be people who blog or do extended reviews but to be honest your better off at 1080p for stuff like that.

I don't think it'd be hard to chop a vlog into five-minute segments.
But I'll often be in a scenic situation where I want to record video with the camera unattended for half an hour and then edit it down to the interesting parts. With 4k video on the Note 4, that's not possible.

What would be the reason they made it limited to 5 minutes? Also when I do video I Stop each clip so nothing is longer than 3 minutes. Unless i'm doing something else that requires a constant video stream then i guess it wouldn't work.

I had read a few months back for a prior Galaxy that this was done so the processor doesn't overheat.

If the file system is FAT32, any individual file is limited to 2 gigs. Might have something to do with it.

No, it's exFAT. It's got videos of more than 2 GB. And if it were a file-size limit, the phone should just shoot until the limit is reached, rather than forcing the video to stop at 5 minutes (which turns out to be around 1.7 GB).

I am not very knowledgeable on this part of android, however the overheating sounds like what was the reasoning behind it.

Gaming on the V30 discussion thread.

I didn't see a thread dedicated to gaming on the V30, so I figured I'd create one for us to discuss our recommendations, thoughts etc.
Please feel free to add to the thread.
On a start, I noticed on really dark games, such as Karma incarnation 1, it looks pretty stunning. The blacks are so dark you can't distinguish the screen from the edge of the phone. And the colors of the game look amazing. It's a very dark and odd game though.

Anyone using Pokemon Go, South Park Phone Destroyer or Super Mario Run??.... any throttling after a few minutes or hiccups?
I'm mostly curious about playing and charging at the same time and how warm things get and if the procs slow down to a point it's noticeable in game. My current phone gets real bad with Pokemon Go after about 5 min... it's like a slide show after throttling starts, but it's smooth before the temp increases.
thanks for any info.
I've played super Mario run for periods longer than 5 minutes and it doesn't stutter or lag. The phone doesn't even really get warm. I haven't charged and played yet though as I still believe in the old "battery conditioning". ?

No doubt, even I dislike charging and playing, but when you get into a group and hit raids in Pokemon Go for 8 hours charging with a battery pack on the go is a must, lol. Happy to hear at least for Mario Run you've not seen any issues. Thank you.
Here are my two cents. The games I run are Hyperburner, Hitman: Sniper, Lonewolf, PacMan CE, Star Wars Pinball, with Hungry Shark and Flip Diving for the kids. On those the phone runs like nothing is happening at all, no warming and no lag whatsoever. I also run 5 emulators: NostalgiaNES, SuperRetro 16, MD.EMU, Mugen64Plus and MAME4DROID and apart for MAME not recognizing SF3 3rd Strike's CHD image all games runs ok. The only game I have to run on basically low quality is Star Wars: KOTOR (my favorite game), for some reason it will stutter and almost drop to 5fps if I run it with high-quality graphics, shadows on, grass on and frame buffer efftecs on. I was surprised since this is an old game ported from the main PC code, my guess it is resolution limited but nonetheless, I have to run it low quality. Other than that, no issues on those previously mentioned games.

You're correct, I changed the resolution to both normal and low and the game won't run, it gets stuck on the splash screen. Go back to high resolution and runs as it's supposed to do. Same with framerate. Clearing data didn't help too. I frankly am surprised by this.

Anyone gaming on v30+? It's weird and against all the good reports about gaming on regular v30, but IT'S SLOW! FPS must be around 10-15 fps playing mobile legends, titanfall, actually all games. I can see on some points it improves but only for a couple of seconds.
I've tried playing with the game settings. None improve the frame rate..
I played lineage 2 it ran like crap at max settings . but on my iphone 8 plus not problem. Other games ive tried is kuboom wasnt so great not smooth. Gunz of boom ran ok . over all not impressed maybe lg software might be throttling the cpu/gpu so the phone doesnt get hot. My lg v30+ stayed cool playing 3+ hours straight. Now i dont game on my v30+ all my games are on my iphone.

Change screen resolution?

Hey! I'm getting my pixel 2 XL tomorrow and have been looking around to see if I could change the screen resolution at all. (like on samsung phones) I feel like I'd be okay with 1080p as it's all I've used on oneplus phones for the past 4 years. I'd enjoy the extra battery. The only time I'd want 1440p is when watching video's or movies. Is there anyway to change the resolution completely or have it switch back when apps are open like youtube or netflix? I will be getting an unlocked version so I can root.

Don't bother. In an informal test conducted late last year it was shown the power savings was only a few minutes, with those power savings solely due to a reduced workload for the GPU, and thus not worth the effort. So enjoy the screen as is.
