[Q] Help me overcome rooting Road Block for my G2 (OTA) - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am now getting this error on the Terminal Emulator on my G2 after inputting the following command line from rooting instruction...
'You now have read-write access to your /system, hboot, and recovery partitions. But you still need to "lock in" root, and give you 'su' access in the future. So just do:'
"# /data/local/tmp/root" without the # sign
I got this error message
"## mkdir failed for /system/xbin, File exists
## cp: can't stat '/system/xbin/busybox': Not a directory
## Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: not found
## cp: not found
## cp: not found
## Unable to chmod /system/bin/su: No such file or directory"
Once again I am seeking help on this...So if anyone can help...please let me know. Thanks again for all of the support that I have received so far
BY the way the Visionary App doesn't work on my phone so I am using the rooting wiki for the G2 on this site
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...cess_.28Permanent_Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29 ...

I had this problem just use root explorer app and move the files rage, data, root and busybox to your data/local/tmp
and then youll get that first error that meaning you've done it right.
and then all the others should work now because your files were are not quite in the right spot.
so manually move the files to your data/local/tmp they all need to be inside the tmp folder I had to figure that out one by one.

wait which method of prem rooting is this?

This is the gfree/rage method, since visionary doesn't work on my OTA G2

Sorry for the late response I had actually used visionary for the temp-root only just to gain a few sec of access to move the file and type in the commands

you are indeed on of the luck ones who actually got visionary to work on the g2 after OTA update.....you see I have tried visionary r14, r13,r12, r11 and r3 (all of which be could download on the web) none of them work even for temp-root....The only only version of visionary that previously work on my phone was the one from the android market (visionary r7), which is no longer available... By the way, if you still have visionary on your phone could you please check to see if it is the r7 version, if so could you please send me a copy...thanks

Oh wow I didn't even know I there was only a few that visionary worked for. I had used the same guide but I used a video off youtube to sorta get a look at what was going on. but they kept saying the version 11 was the only on that worked but I broke my mytouch like that. Then I got the g2 and went with the gfree true s-off method. and man I wish I wish I had the version 14 file I used but I took that off my phone asap cuz I didn't want something crazy happen. I couldn't find any other version for the life of me lol. They had goten taken down from every site I went to. so I just thought if I used it to get temp root and move the files around I could get it done without a laptop I whould be good. It only took 10 min to get mine rooted.

this happened to me.. re push the files and all the steps from that first file pushing steps over again

Wow I would be pissed lol. And rite they wont load after hitting the temp root to right have you turned on usb debugging on?

Dude that was time well spent.
ADB is essential to android all together, there may be one click root options and other quick fix packages but if your seriouse with android you need to know ADB.
+1 for adb knowledge.

Yeah adb is very usefull. Spending time to learn the commands will help you greatly in the future and also save you a lot of time.

YAY I FIXED IT. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID.
1. reboot
2. Open and run visionary (with set system r/w after root) checked.
3. After root is complete, click root again (should say already rooted)
4. Open Terminal and sype "su" then enter
5. Type "sync" and wait about a min
6. POWER OFF THE PHONE the right way by holding down the power.
7. After reboot it should work! YAY!!

I fixed it as well but I did differently.. maybe it will help those still having trouble.. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID.
1) The first problem I had was I had Visionary 11 AND 12 (+plus) installed and both were set to root on boot. This was just a left over quirk from after doing the perm root since I just assumed it had to be set to root on boot, and after installing Vis12 I forgot to uninstall Vis11. Apparently Vis12 doesn't overwrite Vis11 so having both apps root on boot was a bad thing.
2) So I deleted both visionary apps (When they tried to root on boot I backed out of them and just uninstalled them)
3) Then I rebooted and was still not permrooted (although S was off)!
4) Sooo I reinstalled Visionary 12(+Plus)... and checked root on boot AND the r/w partition setting. Then rebooted..
5) With the lone visionary now installed and working solo it rebooted and ran on root and I was rooted..
So now i"m like, ok.. it rooted with visionary, but I don't want visionary in order to root...
6) So I uninstalled visionary 12 (for the second time) and rebooted and now the root stuck.
I think that visionary 12 needs to run after the first reboot with those two settings checked... run on boot and the partition setting. After that happens once I think it makes the root stick.. or at least it did for me.
I had same issue with S-off but no root. I did the manual method and got S-off but root never stuck. I tried the manual method again and again but when I rebooted the apps would say root access could not be gained. What ended up working was I went into Visionary 12 and pushed the temp root button. Once I had temp root I then pushed the perm root button. It did it's thing and rebooted. Once it rebooted I had root that stuck. Don't know if this will help anyone having this issue but it was the only thing that worked for me. As a side note, it was like seeing an old childhood friend when I flashed Cyanogens bacon bits.

Yea gotta say I don't regret a single minute of searching reading and learning. I just wish I could have had the root and THEN learned how to use ADB simply because I'm an impatient chump at times. Learning how to use it seemed to open up my eyes to things though now I have a better grasp on everything I found confusing when I first came back to browsing the Android forums.

I am just curious: if I do this perm root with S-OFF, but keep the stock ROM for the time being, will that prevent potential future OTA's from T-Mobile, potential upgrades to next versions of Android?
Now, I understand that all those "updates" will also be available via these forums but I'm just a tad concerned that all the custom ROM's might have bugs that would prevent everyday features...
I appreciate stuff like overclocking and tethering/hotspot hacks, but I'm more of a "set it and forget it" kinda guy - most likely I won't have time to constantly test new ROM's and report bugs, wait for fixes, etc.
Just wondering if you have any suggestions?
P.S. Although I am not VERY technical with Android I was able to follow instructions around here to reflash stock ROM, but I was in the "emergency" mode - it was "do it or die" situation made me pretty nervous and I hope not to have to do that constantly
I did everything in the video...and I have s-off and the superuser app every reboot...but root won't stick....and yeah..I've tried temp and perm root with visionary r12 and 13....should I start all over again?
Get r13...it gives you an option to temp root or perm root..click on temp root first than click on perm root..let see if that works

Quick new questions!

Hello! I just got my G2, and I am totally new to this scene. I'm following black prince's video guide on how to root, but when I try to temp root my phone, it tells me I need to enable usb debugging..
Now, I searched all over my phone, google, and the forum but I couldn't find anything besides USB tethering, which didn't work..If anyone can help me, I'd be greatful
also: Once I root my phone, how do I go about putting a custom rom on there/ bacon bits (if anyone can enlighten me what that is)
I looked at guides, but they're confusing talking about pushing and some other stuff that I am not familiar with. Thanks!!
To be honest if you can't find a rather simple checkbox in your phone you really don't need to root
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
But who am I to judge? To find usb debugging go to settings--> applications-->development and there you go click the checkmark.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I feel dumb as hell, thats the last place I expected that to be in. Sorry, and thank you!
Thank you so much, now my device is rooted because it has that s-off as the video said.
Now, what would somebody recommend/ how do I go about doing this the simple way?
Im confused. Are you saying you need to get s-off or do you already have it?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Well you must first ask yourself. What do i want root for? Search the market for "root" thats a good start to give you an idea of some of the things you can do with root. Now you will want to read through the various roms you can flash if you want. Some have the sense ui if thats your flavor or you can go with a vanilla rom or cm6 for a vanilla plus feel. But really just read everything
In the forum and find something that sounds interesting and fun.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Well, I got S-off, so now I believe I'm good to flash roms.
I want something that will either save me battery (such as taking off the stock apps that came with), or some neat rom. Any suggestions?
So I installed Rom manager, and I tried to install Clockwork Mod that it requires you to install but I get the following error
"An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
And when I first open up Rom Manager, it says
"You must root your phone for ROM Manager to Function. Superuser was not found at /system/bin/su or system/xbin/su. "
But I rooted my phone, and my S is off...?

I'm no expert on G2's and I don't even have mine yet but I have been reading about root on the G2 for the past week but are you rooted with GFree? The VISIONary method is old, the new method is with Rage and GFree, the VISIONary method is about 90% real, its not TRUE S-OFF. And when you say terminal, do you mean the emulated terminal? If so, maybe you accidentally have the superuser app to deny root access to the terminal app. Look at your super user app and see if it is in the denied list. And if you did root with the old VISIONary method, re-root with Rage and GFree. I can do my best to help you get a proper S-OFF if you would like.

Is there a pause before it says that ? Because the first time you do "su" a window will pop up on your phone screen from the Superuser app, and you have to authorise Superuser to let "su" have root permissions. If the phone screen is off you might not notice this, then it will fail to get the necessary permission.

G2 root

Can someone please help me root this damn thing. I haven't had root since the first few versions of visionary were out. I have tried the new visionary versions up to date, no luck. I have tried the rage method, and I always get stuck at the command to lock in root. I have super cid, sim unlock, real s off etc... I am able to get a root shell on terminal emulator when I run rage but that is about it. I have had two different errors when running /data/local/tmp/root. One being permission denied and the other a long string of **** ending in unable to chmod blah blah blah. All I have done to this thing was tmp root in the past, then deleted all files associated with that, and i downloaded the nov. Ota from xda and loaded that from recovery. Anyone got any ideas on what is wrong with this phone or me? I follow all guides to exact detail.

Did you read the Rage guide thoroughly before rooting? Because I had no problems with Rage.
Here's another option, check out post #3 in the following thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885430
All I can suggest is read again and try again, this is the simplest root method I've seen so far: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228&highlight=rage
I'm good now, but I'm not sure if I'm perm or I still need to lock it in. I just ran set cpu no prob and rom mangaer and have access to download roms.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
It seems very simple to me to but the fact that things would not go the way they should have,(I am a very good at paying attention to detail) made it difficult. I had to do a few alternate paths to achieve this because of unknown bugs or things in my phone.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
You will soon find out if it's permanent root or not if you reboot, because if you can still get root then it was/is permanent.
If it's not permanent, then we need to know about those errors from the root script that you're running to lock in the permanent root. Something is going wrong if you're getting several errors from it, and it's probably something very simple to fix.
I'm all good now. After a few work arounds I've finally managed to make this damn thing root. Finally have cm6.1.1, my first custom rom, and got this beast overclocked again, with a real kernel for a change. Now to really start "jimmy ****in" my phone. Take care and thanks for the reply.

I tried rage but upon lock in the root (after gfree), it gave msg saying mkdir/system/bin failed, already existed.
I rebooted the phone and still does not have perm root, can not get SU in adb, it keeps telling me permission denied.
Also tried the visionary method posted on theunlockr.com but everytime i insmod the wpthis, it keeps telling me Format exec error
Looking for some helps

Umm..."mkdir /system/bin" isn't in the list of instructions for the rage method. Are you sure you're following it to the letter?
I followed the instruction several times, word by word. After gfree -f, I did the lock root /data/local/tmp/root and the terminal returns the msg saying files already exist

Some people, including myself, are running into the problem with rage because for some reason,(possibly the november OTA update combined with effects from older versions of visionary) Superuser.apk would not properly push to the phone. The nookcolor method of pushing su.apk to the phone works and also locked root in for me, without having to run /data/local/tmp/root at the end of the rage method after gaining s off, sim unlock, and super cid. I simply ran rage and once I was in temp root shell on terminal, I used. The different method to load su on phone and that was that.

It really is odd. I used the link I posted in post 12 on three different phones with no problems whatsoever.
I'm not exactly sure what caused the problems. I never had a problem when the old temp root visionaries were all that was available. I was temp rooted with the stock kernel oc module. Then I pushed the november OTA manually and disabled some bloatware after that. Then I deleted visionary and su when visionary came out with the permroot option. I wiped my phone after that to download visionary 11 or 12, and from then until my last attempt it never gave me any kind of root at all. So I stumbled upon the rage method and then the problems started to come up with that method too, but they were able to be solved unlike visionary.

Temp-Rooting?

since my first thread got close so fast;
as the other thread says, i tried Visionary+ and z4root, and now also Rage(or "gFree" as 3rd poster called it);
when i come to the 2nd stage of this thread ( [GUIDE] Instructions to Root G2 [Temp Root]) i close the terminal emulator, and when i start it again, it tells me i need to force close it, i do that, try to launch it again, nothing happends, the phone hangs, it becomes uber-slow and wont start anything, the only thing to fix that is rebooting, it seems, but then i have to rage it again
so, anyone wants to explain what to do?
(Mods; please don't close the thread until i got it working >_<)
Like the other poster said using the gfree method worked for me but I did use visionary for temp root to get the files I needed to where they had to go.
I hate to tell you to go to a different site but I used the new unlockr.com method which is the same gfree method with a mix of some of the true s-off guides.
because some file pushing commands where annoying so once you get a video guide on what to download and a writen guide over here just put the 2 together.
I moved the gfree file, busybox, data file to your data/local/tmp directory and moved the superuser apk on to the root of the sdcard and then followed the commands that actually use the file that you placed into your data/local/tmp directory.
you will need visionary just to get temp root to access the data privalge you will also need a app called rootexplorer you'll need this to get into your data/local/tmp but after you've read the directions a thousand times you'll know what I had directed you to do and why its easyier to move them manually.
I know that was a lot to read but that is plain an simple ways to manually move the files to the spot you need them without commands to move them you can do it your self but read this and the true root directions and the unlockr.com guide for this phone 3 times before attempting.

But your trying to get temp root and that's it and nothing else like your goal is to get garbage apps off your phone and to wifi tether or your aiming to flash roms and kernels?

well, yeah, i want to get rid of garbage apps and tweak some files, such as gaining my own shortcut key as it was removed to fit Scandinavian language keys.
also, wifi-tethering exist under the name "portable wifi hotspot" in Desire Z

Which phone do you have, G2 or Desire Z? If Desire Z, which rom version is the phone running?

Desire Z, i'm running the rom that came with it.
Android 2.2
build number 1.82.405.1 (<- rom?)
Ahh now I know what your goal is then I could try and help a little more. but the rooting part if you read one part and execute it it won't take long. how far have you gotten did you download all the files need to root the phone from any guides yet?

Edit: I'm pretty sure we need a lot more reading done before attempting root or anything.

since my first thread got close so fast;
as the other thread says, i tried Visionary+ and z4root, and now also Rage(or "gFree" as 3rd poster called it);
when i come to the 2nd stage of this thread ( [GUIDE] Instructions to Root G2 [Temp Root]) i close the terminal emulator, and when i start it again, it tells me i need to force close it, i do that, try to launch it again, nothing happends, the phone hangs, it becomes uber-slow and wont start anything, the only thing to fix that is rebooting, it seems, but then i have to rage it again

pittyboy, i'm sorry but, can you start typing on a computer instead?
you lack of dots, commas and question marks makes it really hard to understand what you are typing.
and i have no problems with using adb at all.
not to mention that your "guide" is almost the same as the one i used in the temp-root part.
the only difference i can see is how chmod is done and if u do /data/local/tmp/root after it .
@ comoba The problem is you have to downgrade your desire Z rom to 1.34 in order to temp root and root. Heres the downgrading instructions. You have the 1.82 rom and Im not sure if the downgrading will work for that rom, others have asked this same question on downgrading the 1.82 rom to 1.34 but I have yet to see confirmation of this.
@prittyboy203 you are giving wrong advice on rooting, you are telling him to push a file specifically for the G2 to his desire Z, you might want to do some research before giving advice.
Specifically this: The following is only for the Tmobile G2...

PERM ROOT
=================================================
ON YOUR PC:
unzip the vision-perm-root.zip and navigate to that folder. There will be four files. You will need to push two of these to your phone- hboot-eng.img, and one of the wpthis-[..].ko files.
If you HAVE applied the OTA update, push wpthis-OTA.ko.
If you HAVE NOT applied the OTA update, push wpthis-pre-OTA.ko.
Code:
$ adb push hboot-eng.img /data/local
$ adb push wpthis-OTA.ko /data/local
ON YOUR PHONE:
You should still have terminal emulator up, at a root prompt. Now run:
Code:
# insmod /data/local/wpthis-OTA.ko
You should see:
Code:
init_module 'wpthis-OTA.ko' failed (Function not implemented)
That means it worked. This next step is CRUCIAL. You must make sure that you are writing to the proper partition here or you could brick your phone. To be absolutely clear- the partition is mmcblk(zero)p(one)(eight)
dd if=/data/local/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
You should see some messages indicating that it was written. Next, run:
# /data/local/tmp/root
This will lock in root, and give you 'su' access in the future. Next, run:
# sync
Now wait at least a minute, just to be safe. After waiting, reboot your phone using the power button. After it finishes starting up, launch the terminal emulator, and type 'su'. You should get the prompt asking you to grant permissions. If you got the prompt, congratulations! You have permanent root!

Sorry for the double post but I wanted you to see this,
The method I gave you above to Downgrade your ROM HERE is confirmed to work with 1.82 rom even though the instructions were written to downgrade from 1.72 to 1.34. Heres the post confirming this.

if i was doing that; temp-rooting the first time, to get everything installed etc, would i still be able to temproot if i upgrade the rom back to 1.82? or should i do perm root because it would be better?

*REFORMAT SD CARD TO FAT+32
*TEMPROOT ROOT YOUR PHONE WITH VISIONARY+ (LEAVE EVERYTHING UNCHECKED)
-DOWNLOAD ANDROID TERMINAL EMULATOR FROM MARKET.
Step one:
-you need root_files.rar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=504766&d=1296452641
-then create a new folder on the root of the SD CARD named root_files and extract everything
in the rar there.
Step Two:
Open term. emu. and type.
(DO NOT TYPE */# just commands.)
$) su
#) cp /sdcard/root_files/perm_root /data/local/perm_root
#) chmod 777 /data/local/*
#) /data/local/perm_root
Now turn off phone, take battery out, vol+down, S-OFF PERM ROOT...
Install Rom Manager, flash CWM, and flash your fav. rom (RoyalGinger)
The most painless way I rooted mytouch!
hope it saves you a headache.
Takes.....5min?
ISSUES: If it doesn't work, do a factory reset, and repeat!

The one from granking works perfectly.... Thats the method most of us use without any issue whatsoever (following step by step in guide) s-off engineering bl and root.

As you can see in this guide the original source is indeed xda. And of course is the one from granking in a thread in THIS forum.

I am with KenpoAP on this one. It uses the same tools as grankin's method, which works, as does this method. They both do fundamentally the same thing; use Visionary to temp-root, then gfree to perm-root. Albeit, this does script it up a bit.
This is getting old with all these "root method that works" threads (no offense OP, seems like you are trying to help). We have a method that works, and works well. He even explains a bit about why it works and is different than earlier methods. I have rooted 3 myTouch 4G's using that method. All without a hitch. I am sure this would work fine also, and seems a bit easier. But, it is not because the other method does not work.
