Thinking of ditching TMo and my N1 and getting and Evo or Epic - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So as not to piss off the Mods, please follow the link to the Epic forum where I posted the question first.

i'd wait just a little bit longer... ctia is coming and there are rumors... go to now.sprint.com/evo3d and get redirected to their home site. enter gibberish after the / and get a 404 error. this, along with somebody leaking a little info, might mean good news.
there's also a rumored nexus s 4g and evo view tablet btw. all of these are rumors thoug.

Wanting to take advantage of the $125 ETF credit Sprint is offering. Have till middle of April though.

yeah if you are thinking of getting a phone now then definitely get the evo. it has the bigger screen. plus i just don't like the build of the epic. also it is from samsung and if you ever had the instinct then you will understand why the evo is better.
however if you can wait there are some exciting rumors about a new evo phone (evo 3d). o would at least wait after ctia happening next week.

evo
i tested evo and epic side by side at sprint store... epic was slower to load fb, you tube..apps, etc. it also has bad reception when in some buildings. i have friends with epics and galaxy we would be watching youtube and theirs would stall. it does have a better looking screen but i went with the evo.

i have the Evo and my wife has the Epic.
I like the Evo more. And my wife ALSO likes my Evo more.
Very telling to me...

Evo 4G 3D? Evo tablet? More at CTIA? Im excited...

i dont like to frequent engadget but saw this on my twitter feed...figured id share here
personally im a bit excited about a nexus s 4G, potentially on sprint. im not a fan of sammy devices(i think its the way they feel to me; ie build quality) but i do like the idea of having a nexus device. and getting the vanilla android experience--also getting OS updates (almost)first. im also excited to see the possibility of a 3D evo even though im not a big fan of 3d.
so ctia is about two weeks away and i can hardly wait to see if they announce a 4g equipped nexus s!
thought id share...boring sunday...
Saw this a few minutes ago and hopefully sprint will deliver haha. Not much of a 3D fan either but hopefully it will be a true successor to the evo
a dual core 3D evo would definitely guarantee my contract renewal with sprint....lets keep our fingers crossed.
I really hope they ditch all the plastic and go with aluminum for the EVO 3D like the thunderbolt.
the evo name gets water down once again with the evo 3d. how you ask.. simple their are some people eho would think that the evo 4g since the number 4 is a larger number is the newer model and think that the 3d is the older model since it has a lesser number, thus they have once again crapped on the evo name.... glad i have traded my evo 4g for the awsome epic 4g,....

Sadly though, he has a point. Reasoning like that is why Microsoft named their current gen console the X-Box 360 instead of the X-Box 2. Sony was gearing up to release the PS3 and MS feared that if they released the X-Box 2 then your average, under-informed consumer would think "Well the Sony system has a 3 and the Microsoft one has a 2.... The Sony system MUST be better!"
Do I think this will happen with the EVO if they call the new on the EVO 3D? Not really, because your average consumer doesn't even call this phone their "EVO 4G" they simply refer to it as their "EVO". Plus most of the people that would flock to buy the new EVO are the ones that are keeping up with boards like this one and are well informed.
I dk about 3d cell phones, but personally I think most people who say they don't like 3D haven't sat down and watched a real 3D tv, like the Panasonic VT25 and just assume it is like the 3D in the theaters. There are currently 3-4 (i forget which) companies doing 3D, and all are different.
Just my 2 cents. If your going to judge 3D based off of one type of 3D, you won't know what you are missing
lol that was the worst syllogism i have heard to date. who cares about the name. anybody who has an android phone hopefully knows enough about technology to know that its not a downgrade from and evo 4 to an evo 3. we aren't dumb iphone owners (lol at people who call it the iphone 4g)
and honestly i was skeptical about 3d but i was at best buy and checked it out on a samsung and i was seriously impressed. its like being right there in person. things dont necessarily pop out, things just have depth for once hence the 3rd dimension. however, in a phone? would this mean i need to carry around freaking glasses?
seems like a little much. i want a clean phone with a crap load of speed. i may have to go nexus s if it comes out

Samsung's 3D isn't half as good looking as the 3D tech on Pannys VT25. So if you thought the sammy looked good...

No, the technology they are going to be using on phones is the same that Nintendo is using on the 3DS and that Vizio is going to be using in some upcoming 3DTV's in which the 3D image is generated solely on the device and therefore no need for glasses.

upgrading from evo 4g to???

ok so my evo 4g started having problems part of the screen went dead so i couldn't
tap numbers 4,5,6 and some letters also the usb port won't allow it to be charged anymore with the normal charger it came with i have to use my external drive usb cord to charge it on my pc
i shipped it to htc and i waited a week with no response so i call them to find out it has water damage and it be would be 300 to fix this wouldnt be a big deal if i had actually dropped it in water or ever laid it in something wet
i would had believed them more if they said it was dropped but water damage -_- i'm not going for that
so what new phones are coming out that are going to be better then the evo?
i have checked out the atrix 4g sgs2 and lg3d
wait for evo2
lmao evo2
if there is actually any evidence of a evo 2 link me to it and i would gladly wait
there is evidence of an evo 3d. first, an anonymous leak. then, go to now.sprint.com/evo3d and get linked to homepage. enter anything else after / and get 404 error. htc released evo at ctia, and thats next week. i'd wait.
yeah i will wait having phone shipped back
called them and tried to tell them it wasn't water damage -_- they wouldn't listen
so i got it shipped back >.> very excited to get another new phone though >.>
the evo3d better have monster specs
I am hoping the new HTC-Pyramid is the EVo2, or this phone is coming to Sprint.

It is supposed to, but the Nexus-One took like 2+ months before the official upgrade came out, while the Nexus-S was the sole 2.3 Gingerbread phone for a couple of months.
I am not too confident that the Nexus-S will be first in line to get the next big OS update. I see them coming out with a Nexus-3.0 first phone running "ice Cream" then later on down the road the Nexus-S will get that update, and then the Nexus-One.
I thought Google was going to do it differently ? If there is a "nexus" brand phone, it should get the newest OS right away, that was the whole point of the phone. But the Nexus-S came out with 2.3, and all the Nexus-One owners just kept waiting and waiting, for a few months. That was not cool.
i really enjoy my evo so if it were me, id replace it.
ctia next week should show us something that will prolly launch come summer time. possibly a wimax enabled nexus s if you like sammy mobile devices.
Did the litmus paper on the battery get wet? It should be pink.
ooohhh htc shooter sounds sexy maybe 3d?
sorry to dig up an old thread, but there's no point in making a new one. I've had random issues with my evo and want to upgrade, but i really like mine and the active community behind it. Any other phones have as many devs working on them like we do here? i'd really like to stick with HTC
I'm also thinking of upgrading...phone of choice after research seems to be the Galaxy S II...I just read the side by side comparison vs. the iphone 4s and the verizon droid and the S II gives the best of all worlds.

evo 3d is your phone-whore then. great dual core speed, 1 gig of ram, higher-res screen, and who could forget good ol' 3d games and pics/vids.
i haven't seen it in person, but isn't it smaller than the evo?

A bit taller and a bit thinner. The body itself is a bit thicker, but it has the same thickest point as the og evo because the cam doesn't stick out as much. This makes it feel better in the hand, more solid. Same weight I think.

I'd just keep the OG. It's awesome, the only thing that sucks is that we don't have wimax in San Diego and I don't expect to ever see it:-(

Would you buy Epic Touch again now?

I just became eligible for an upgrade as a Sprint Premier Gold customer - my last one before the program ends in December. I have been thinking about buying an Epic 4G Touch for a while, and am wondering if those of you who got them early on are still happy with your purchase.
As far as I can tell, there is not any Sprint android phone on the horizon that looks any better, and I am not willing to wait until March to upgrade. Also, if it makes any difference I am coming from the OG Epic, which finally seems to be working well thanks to the GB update and the work of our great developers here at XDA.
So, any thoughts? Would you buy the E4GT again? Anything phones coming out soon that you would wait for? Thanks for any input...
If I could have a do over, I would wait until they fixed the LOS issue. Other than that, I love the phone and think it's the best option on Sprint currently (minus the LOS issue of course).
Without a doubt.

Results have varried, but the EG31 modem update fixed the LOS issue for me. Haven't had one since...
I bought mine on launch day, and still very happy with my purchase. I would definitely buy it again.

I did come from the original Epic 4G. I was a lil worried about not having the physical keyboard because I text a lot, but surprisingly it hasn't been a problem. I found that I was using the onscreen keyboard on my OG Epic a lot anyway, and with the added screen real estate, it only made it easier. I have adjusted quite well to all touchscreen.
Yes! Honestly, this phone never fails to amaze me. From how sharp and crisp the screen is, to the speed/raw power as the device as a whole, to the sexyness of the phone, even when the screen is off.
Remember, you will have 14 days to return/switch to another phone.
Its the best out now on any carrier besides the att variant.
The next phone that will be a major step up probably won't be out until next April/may at the earliest (on sprint at least). So go for it.
It will get the ice cream sandwich update so its future proof I'd say, I wouldn't wait on the nexus because by time that comes to sprint, if it does, it will be short lived like the nexus s on sprint (dual cores came to sprint a month later)

I would definatelly buy one again. It is sweet phone. No regrets here.

The phone, as a device, is great. The phone, as a phone, sucks a big fat one. The antenna design and/or radio firmware is causing me to regret buying this device.
Not only is there a LoS issue as others have pointed out, but signal quality itself is atrocious. In general, CDMA is meant to be able to operate at very low signal quality. However, when this phone gets into low signal strength, it chops up my audio send/receive. Moreover, the data speed I get is crap. YMMV.
As I stated earlier, the phone, as a device, is great. It has a beautiful screen, the camera is pretty awesome, and it rarely slows down when using it regularly.
I agree with most of what fadeaway said. I wouldn't buy. Wait for a LTE handset to land unless you plan on buying another phone in 6 months. Here's what I posted on another thread:
I bought the ET4G on a whim after seeing it on Craigslist for an attractive price. After using it for a week, it's going back on Craigslist and I am using my OG Epic again w/ the new Gingerbread release (and physical keyboard fixes!).
While the ET4G certainly offers a snappier Android experience and a better camera than the OG Epic, I didn't find the boost in speed or extra screen real estate to be worth the $325 I paid for the device. I think the only speed boost worth writing home about was the speed of the ET4G's stock browser. Lastly, the audio quality of SGSII is inferior to SGSI and in all honesty not worthy of a high end smartphone - this was the deal breaker for me.
Considering that you already have the OG Epic, I'd wait until the middle of next year so you can get a killer future-proof 720p LTE phone at a fully discounted price. All that said, the ET4G is still a great device!
I just got mine last week, and LOVE it, running Calk's ROM + ICS theme and this phone just looks so cool, the screen is perfect for web page reading, and watching YouTube videos look amazing, and the WiFi signal for me is the best I have ever had, upstairs in bedrooms I still get good WiFi signal from the Basement office, no other phone held connection up on the 2nd floor. GPS is rock solid and locks on instant. Yes I have had two LOS's so far in one week, but no big deal, just restart the phone and it's gone, the phone restarts so fast. And that happened at my Mom's house, a very poor Sprint area, with no bars ever.
I am coming from the Nexus-S 4G which was feeling small to me, and before that my EVO 4G which I loved for a year. The Epic Touch 4G gives me that same wow factor I had when the EVO first came out last year. Oh yeah, the sound volume is great, very loud playing videos, where as my Nexus could barely be heard at full volume, and this is even louder than my EVO 4G, which was good.
There won't be a significantly better phone out until Summer, most likely the EVO-Three and Galaxy S3. And I can't wait till there is a solid stable Android 4.0 ICS ROM out for this phone, then holy cow, this thing will destroy anything for a long time.

Yeah, that is a great point. I think I am going to call Best Buy and see if they will match Amazon's $149 price for the phone. If so, I may get it tonight...
The hardware is excellent but the phone doesn't get much support, I would have waited if I was to do it all over again. HTC phones get lots of supports, which I would have waited for. I had the ppc6700, mogul, hero, and eve.
One last thing, I thought the EVO 4G when it first released last year was an amazing device, it just blew me away, the big screen, build quality, tons of custom ROM's, just an awesome smartphone for last year.
I feel the Epic Touch 4G, is the true successor and best next gen device for Sprint.
ehh
I think my biggest problem with the phone is that it feels so unpolished, in terms of all the little issues I keep running into it. Granted, LoS only happened to me after a root, but, it was an annoying issue for many other people. The GPS lock is just absolute crap, and the fact that apps keep crashing because of that sound glitch is just plain annoying. I couldn't even finish PvZ because of it...
Honestly, it feels like Sprint and Samsung were trying to sell this phone quick and leave it to dry while they were working on their other new offerings (iphone4s for Sprint, and the Galaxy Nexus for Samsung). Feels very half assed...
Given a second shot, I think I'd have to really reconsider...
I'm on the EG30 modem with ROOT+CWM5 applied. Stock ROM and kernel other then that.
I've only had LOS one time and that was when I was in a basement where there simply was no signal. No Sprint, nothing to roam to either.
When I came out of the basement and was back in an area I knew for a fact should have had full Sprint bars, my phone showed nothing. Said I had no service. I had to reboot to which fixed it.
First and only time.
I love my new Samsung Epic Touch 4G.
I'm not sure that it's really much better then my EVO 4G was either though. My EVO was tweaked VERY nicely and I was getting 30~35 hours of battery life on MikG ROM with a little SetCPU tweaking. I like the slim profile of the Epic Touch 4G though, sucker is THIN and seems to be better built then my EVO 4G.
That said, I really took a hard look at the Apple iPhone 4S when I was shopping.
I almost picked up the 4S simply because I work for a school system that is loaded with iPhones, iPads and Macbooks.
I'm pretty much the only person in my department (technology dept) that uses an Android. I sorta want to get in line with what the district runs. The ONLY reason didn't get the 4S was the size of the screen. If it would have been 4~4.5 inches, I would have gotten one. If the iPhone 5 has a bigger screen, I might consider that at upgrade time. Personally I think both series, Android and iOS have good things to offer.
Anyway, back to the original question yes I would buy the Epic Touch 4G again today.

Why arent more devs on this Phone?!

I got the EVO 3D on release day. The 3D phone is solid, not going to sit here and bash it, but this phone is far better IMHO.
With my EVO 3D in hand I carefully weighed in the pros and cons of both phones and realized that the Galaxy was superior overall to the EVO 3D. I even took into consideration the charging port locations (which sucks on the EVO with the cord coming off the side of the phone). I even convinced the wife to jump ship with me and get this over our EVO 3Ds. She even likes it better, and she doesnt even know what an .apk is.
I rooted both phones, installed mine with Stong Steves, because I like blue and Calkulins on her phone because I have used Calkulin ROMs for over 5 years.
I would think more devs would be on this phone over the EVO 3D. Is it because this is Samsung and not HTC?? Did I overlook something that the other 3D Devs wouldnt want this phone over the 3D? Just curious to see what everyone else thought.
I am Waiting for HTC

I am waiting for HTC to come out with a phone comparable to this one, even little bit less in specs will be okay and I will be done with Samsung...Samsung gives Great Hardware, but ZERO Support...HTC is way better regarding support and update...This phone has been out for long enough and neither sprint nor samsung knows how to resolve the issues...
I wondered the same thing after I switched my gf and I's EVO 3Ds to this phone. I would have to say its because its not an HTC. Their phones get the most attention.

The charging port on the bottom of this phone is about the only thing I really dislike about it (physically). Actually using the phone while its plugged in makes it way to easy to stress the port.
With the port on the side, I don't have to worry about resting the phone on my body while I'm reading with the kindle app, or doing anything else in portrait mode for that matter!
I think some folks used up their free upgrade for the year on the 3vo, I almost made that mistake. I waited for the ET4G, some didn't exactly, so not everyone has the means to just swap phones like that nor want to. At least that is my theory, that there are plenty of capable dev's that when the "next big phone" drops to Sprint, it should create conditions like the OG Evo. At least that is what I tell myself haha
I got my phone from craigslist. Traded my old lcd monitor and $150 cash. I never wait for upgrades. Craigslist or ebay has sweet deals for upgrades on the cheap.

Samsung Offers Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade for GALAXY devices

Original Source: http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=8894
Samsung Offers Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade for GALAXY devices
first quarter 2012.
Samsung Electronics plan to provide the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for GALAXY devices. The platform update for GALAXY S II and GALAXY Note will start in the first quarter 2012, and other GALAXY devices will soon follow.
The ICS-upgradable devices are the GALAXY S II, GALAXY S II LTE, GALAXY Note, GALAXY R, GALAXY Tab 10.1, GALAXY Tab 8.9, GALAXY Tab 7.7, and GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus.
For upgradable models, Samsung will make separate announcements on details of OS updates schedule for each market according to market situation and carriers’ requirements.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Samsung GALAXY Nexus, the first Ice Cream Sandwich powered smartphone, were first unveiled at a Google/Samsung joint news conference in Hong Kong on October 19th.
Ice Cream Sandwich brings an entirely new look and feel to Android. It has a redesigned user interface with improved multi-tasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot, NFC support and a full Web browsing experience. Ice Cream Sandwich also features a new People App which lets users browse pictures, messages and social network updates from friends, family and co-workers.
Ice Cream Sandwich also introduces innovations such as Face Unlock, which uses facial recognition to unlock the smartphone. Using NFC technology, Android Beam allows users to quickly share Web pages, apps and YouTube™ videos with friends by simply tapping two phones back-to-back. Users can even use fun effects while shooting video or video chatting with Google Talk™.
* Google, Nexus, Android, Android Market, YouTube, Google Talk, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google Calendar are trademarks of Google, Inc.
Doesn't mean much since carriers ultimately decide when to push it out but at least samsung has made the announcement.

speaking as an original epic 4g owner, this doesn't make me feel any more confident that our phones will get an ICS upgrade.
unless you followed the whole gingerbread debacle w/the epic 4g, it's really hard to explain how little sprint and/or samsung cares about giving us an android upgrade. They seriously just do not care.
I've learned that the Sprint Epic 4g is different from the intl galaxy phones. Period. It might as well not even be called a "galaxy" anything.
It wont surprise me at all to see ICS available on the intl Galaxy S2 phones a year or so before it comes to the Sprint Epic 4g Touch. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we never get the upgrade. seriously... I know that sounds crazy but if you look to the original Epic 4g for precedent, announcements that a "Galaxy S2" phone will get ICS means nothing for the Sprint Epic 4g Touch.
When I bought the epic 4g touch, i asked myself "would i be happy with this phone if this was the only version of android i'll ever get?" and decided yes, so i bought it. That should really be the standard for deciding whether to buy a phone from samsung.
I'll be happily surprised if i'm wrong though (and hope I am...)
That doesn't apply to us. From history with Samsung and sprint, the Samsung phones on Sprint just don't get updated. Look at the moment and the epic.

I know that sounds crazy but if you look to the original Epic 4g for precedent, announcements that a "Galaxy S2" phone will get ICS means nothing for the Sprint Epic 4g Touch.
When I bought the epic 4g touch, i asked myself "would i be happy with this phone if this was the only version of android i'll ever get?" and decided to yes, so i bought it. That should really be the standard for deciding whether to buy a phone from samsung.
I'll be happily surprised if i'm wrong though (and hope I am...)

That whole thing gingerbread debacle on the og epic was a pain. Half the year was spent on Gingerbread leaks lol.

I know! ha... i know i play with my phone too much already and this is a sad statement but it was kinda of a mini emotional rollercoaster. please dont laugh.
I am staying confident that we will see an update for our phones in a timely fashion. People need to stop talking about the Epic 4G already, it is getting old.
If you have any friends on Verizon who bought the HTC Thunderbolt, it was released with Froyo and they just recently got GB. Should that mean that HTC doesn't update their phones either?
The Epic 4G touch is in a league of it's own and it is a flagship phone and Samsung knows they are being looked under a microscope right now as far as updates are concerned.
The Epic 4G was never what the Epic 4G touch is and should not even be looked at in the same manner...
I also don't think it will be Sprint who holds up the update and if it is, we shouldn't see the EVO 3D getting updated either. If the 3D gets it's update it will surely not be Sprints fault if the E4GT doesn't get it...
The only thing that makes me skeptical with the announcement is would they have listed the Epic 4G touch separate from the SGS2 like they did with the LTE version, or do you think they are grouping our phone in there with it?

CNET did a great article on phone updates last summer. According to the article, the manufacturers produce the updates and the carriers test and then approve or disapprove them.

it sounds like you're looking forward to ICS on the epic 4g touch- and I am too. My comment wasn't so much saying "samsung sucks, you ain't ever gonna get ICS"- I was just trying to communicate to the OP that there really is no relationship between announcements that "ICS is going to the Galaxy S2" and whether ICS will come to our phone.
I agree that the Epic 4g is an old phone NOW but it wasn't at all old when Gingerbread came out. I think it was out for like, five months? around there, when gingerbread came up. Gingerbread was out for over a year before it came to the Epic 4g. I disagree with you that the Epic 4g Touch plays a bigger role in the Spring phone lineup now, as compared to the Epic 4g when it first came out. Seriously, when the Epic 4g came it, it was Sprints flagship phone. It was in all the commercials, it was the mac daddy... If anything, I would argue they play the exact same role in Sprint's lineup now. If anything, the Epic 4g Touch plays less of a prominent role b/c Sprint go the iPhone a few weeks after the Epic 4g Touch came out.
I also like your points regarding HTC- but seriously, HTC does a MUCH better job of upgrading their phones than Samsung. I think I saw some study somewhere but I cant find it now so I'll drop it but- I only wished Samsung did just as good of a job updating their phones as HTC does.
anyways- my last point on this topic. I would really like to see ICS on our phones but I do not look to "galaxy s2" update announcements and think "oh, that includes my phone"
The OG epic wasn't the commercial success the Galaxy S line is. Samsung would be stupid to not capitalize on the momentum they are achieving in the mobile space with both Android and WM7. If they really wanted to show how committed they were to Android and the Galaxy line, they would make the ROM's available even if Sprint is going to do there thing.
I think were gonna get a kanged version of cm9 this week actually in reference to he who shall not be mentioned twitter.
Sorry if this has been mentioned or a obvious question, but ICS update has NFC? I thought that was something built into the phone and not with just a update. I know there are NFC SD cards you can buy and something with the cover of the slot can't be metal or something but I didn't think this was possible.

What is ironic is the official stock ROM still random reboots if I'm not mistaken, just not as often as the leaks. And the GPS is completely screwed.
Both problems that were fixed within hours by the incredible devs on the OG Epic. Seriously, I don't know how people use the phone without running custom ROMs. (I often talk customers out of buying the epic, despite having owned one myself and being happy with it, because the stock software is BS).
I tend to think Samsung is going to get these builds out as soon as possible.
Hell there has already been one leak even though it sucks.
Lately sprint has been pretty quick to push out updates once they get their hands on it.
i think the diffrence between the og epic and gingerbread and ics is there was no press release. they seem serious about making this update happen. samsung and sprint could save alot of head aches and let the code get released here. perfected and then give it back to send to peoples device.
hess really needs to get his ear to the street on this stuff.

I mentioned something similar in another thread. The SGS2 is getting much more publicity than OG Epic did. It would be a PR disaster if they didn't update to ICS. They would lose a lot of potential GS3 customers
