HTC Thunderbolt VZW Car dock, bad with music player - Thunderbolt Accessories

This is in reference to the official Verizon Wireless HTC Thunderbolt car dock. Not any aftermarket or third party dock.
Just picked it up today and it's very nice, high quality and nice adjustability.
My issue is with how the phone functions while plugged in. It of course initially launches the Car Panel app, which includes the standard useful gigantic shortcut buttons to maps/navigation and phone. Footprints is a waste of space in my opinion. I'm sure there's no way to adjust that. I hate that the music app isn't built in, what's with that?!?!
Anyway, it appears you have to drop down the notification shade to turn off the Car Panel... no way to just get to the home screen. Lame. When I do this and go to the standard HTC music player app it starts out in landscape (I have the phone in landscape mode) then immediately goes into some weird up-side down portrait mode! It isn't the standard portrait mode either, it's basically the landscape mode smashed into portrait mode, as the equalizer button is gone and I can't hit next/back, etc. Is this happenning to anyone else? Why won't the damn thing stay in regular portrait mode, or at least go in a functional yet upside version of itself?
It's hard to explain, but I'm sure those of you who have the dock have seen this. Any work arounds? They really need to address this. I primarily bought the dock to place my phone in it while playing music while driving, and this just totally kills it.
I know I can use a 3rd party app and it'd probably function better. I've got Winamp installed, I'll see how that goes. But I'd like the standard app to actually work.

Totally agree that the HTC Car Panel is worthless. Unfortunately, there doesn't seems to be a way to adjust this on stock.
However, if you root and install a custom rom, namely "Das BAMF 1.1," it replaces the Car Panel with the Google Car Home app. This app is highly customizable, and you can change which buttons appear on 3 or 4 different screens. It might play nicer with your music player, but at the very least, you can put a third party music player on your Car Home homescreen.
Might just make rooting worthwhile for that functionality alone.

You don't even have to root to get something like that. There are at least a couple of car dashboards available on the market for download.

Yeah. It works just fine automatically. At least when using the Verizon dock that is.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up on the car dock apps in the market, I assumed I'd have to launch those manually myself. I'll take a look into them.
Any of you having issues with the music player forcing it to stay in landscape mode but rotating it into an up-side down portrait orientation? It's really, really annoying.

Vlingo (which is free) is your friend. You can configure it to start when you plug in the car charger.

Here is what the music player looks like, complete crap and unacceptable

load in the google car home, i think you can find it in the market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.carhome
just set it to default to that and use a music player like winamp for android, that one works just fine in my experience

Ive tried on the AOSP Car Home and obviously the Sense Car Home, both work the same. I use Winamp for wireless music transfer but find the overall appearance to be antiquated. I've been mostly streaming music since I got the forever fast 4G that never skips but still frustrating not to be able to use the stock music player in landscape.

Thunderbolt VZW Car Dock and HTC Music Player in landscape
My experience is exactly the same, it's not just you. I wish they'd fix it, it is annoying as hell, as overall I like the HTC Music Player, but that display in landscape makes it unusable. My "fix" is to turn the dock so it's in portrait mode instead, and it works fine that way.
Oh, and for exiting the Car Dock app, I simply choose Menu -> Exit, which does what I want.

This is a severe case of misplaced blame. None of the complaints has anything to do with the car dock itself. The car dock just signals the phone to go into "car dock" mode. Everything else is software on the phone. Oh, and the one Verizon sells isn't "official," or OEM, either. It is an aftermarket, third-party dock made by iGRIP (a German company unrelated to HTC), and branded for Verizon.
First, whatever car dock app is installed becomes the new home screen. This is normal Android behavior, and the phone will do exactly the same thing with any car dock which puts the phone into car dock mode.
Yes, the HTC car dock app is lame. I've been using "CarHome Ultra" (30 day free trial, $1.99 to buy) which can be downloaded from the Market - it allow you to configure multiple pages of buttons, similar to the regular home screen (but no widgets, unfortunately), displays some useful info, and is very configurable. You can also grab "Car Mode Control" (free), which lets you choose which car dock app you want to come up automatically when entering dock mode.
Yes, you use the pulldown to go back to the regular home. You can then place the car dock app on the home screen to switch back.
I use an iPod, mostly (need more than 32 GB), but both Pandora and SubSonic work fine for me in landscape mode.

[APP] PowerAMP-The best Android music player (WITH equalizer!)

Hey all. First I will say that I am NOT the creator of this app, nor do I have anything to do with its development. I am simply sharing it since I found a topic on it on the general Android app forums on XDA and have come to love it IMMENSELY.
Features:
-FULL 10-band Equalizer
-Preamp
-BEAUTIFUL and RESPONSIVE clean interface
-Swipe support for changing songs with impressive 3D animation
-Support of just about EVERY music format known to man WITH equalizer and preamp support on all
-Folders as PLAYLISTs support
-Pretty widget
-Easy to navigate, FAST
Did I mention that if you use it on a Galaxy S device, it can sound VERY VERY impressive due to the Galaxy S having a really high-end sound chip (either the best or one of the best on the market currently). To boost the volume use it in conjunction with Audioboost based on supercurio's audio fix. You can find Audioboost on the market or somewhere on the XDA forums.

Woah, I love it. Proper playlist recognition as well so now I can use my playlist files again.
Great software, but people throw around "best music player on Android" too often without realising that it may be only be the best for their use.
I prefer WinAmp for my use for a number of reasons:
- I don't use an EQ, the GS has perfect sound reproduction, so its really not neccessary
- folder play is irrelevant to me since I have a properly tagged music collection
- WinAmps widget is better IMO, and lockscreen widget control is nice
- PowerAmp lacks LastFM scrobbling
(WinAmp also supports playlists, which is indeed nice, hopefully one of these two will support browsing/playing by Genre soon, but for the meantime I have playlists for each genre as a workaround)
Thanks for recomending PowerAmp!
Top player very easy to use and nice interface, i had to look for a new one as Player Pro started giving me lagging headaches, too bad i cant refund now
+1 if it can be used to equalize ringtone as well~~~
nice, but still prefer winamp because of one thing: playlist sync.
i don't wanna have to make my playlists on my phone. i'd rather make them on my pc and sync them to my phone.
hope the dev integrates that function, and i'll switch.
installed the app to check it out and it's reading the playlists from the music i synchronized with winamp. looks like i'm switching after all.
Song lyrics
Is there (or will be) any built-in function to search lyrics?
Alternatively, how can I display lyrics file (.lrc) into the application?
Great application, anyway.
This app is specifically listed as supporting WMA files, but it does not Does anyone know of a good music player that actually plays wma files?
new build available with lots more features added including more widgets, lockscreen widget, skip control from wired mic button etc....
New build 113 definitely is nice.
too bad this version will expire in a couple of weeks.
And strange, most (but not all) of the album arts (I named them AlbumArt.jpg) are not showing on the play screen in this built. build 68 worked just fine.
anyone got similar experience?
any solutions?
i already tried "clear albumart cache and reload media"
Sound @ max realy sucks bigtime, really don't get it i didn't even use a EQ but the basses where destroyed and even if i turned down my carradio the basses still sucked so the phone just destroys it... (3 days ago, uninstalled immidiatly because i ain't gonna listen to **** )... It almost looks like the sound @ max in powerAMP is equell to 200% the loudness of stock player. really annoying!
Wil try i later on maybe it was a bug but i got it and my roommate with his Desire had it to
The app is very nice, with the right settings it gives a great sound quality.
jaapschaap - you have to adjust to Bass Tone it gives too much bass, try my settings, but don`t change the volume from the app button, it has a bug, when you touch it it increases the bass tone to max although the bass tone button stays in the same place, you have to touch the tone button in order to restore it.

Thanks for the info...
Grumble grumble, doesn't the DAC inside the galaxy s have a hardware EQ? Is there any software available that actually uses it, not just software EQ?
Its supposed to be a five band parametric, if my memory serves me correctly.
I am using powerAMP to listen music. When i want to change next song with my bluetooth earphones, Musicplayerpro appears and both of the two players begin to play. if i uninstall musicplayerpro it is okay but i want to keep both players in my phone.
When I reconnect my headset the app automatically launches, Is there a way to prevent this ? I dont want unecessary applications launching automatically and wasting resources/battery

Find the option in Musicplayerpro to turn headset controls on/off and turn it off. With Android it appears that you have to turn headset controls off for all music players except the one you want active otherwise you'll get the behavior you described.

The only options we have there is pause when disconnected or resume when disconnect, theres no option that says dont auto launch the app.
Build 204 (available in Market) has the option to "Resume on Headset Connect".

[APP] Google Car Home 2.2.1.4

I've got the Car Home app working for Galaxy S2. As you can see, it is not available into Market for our phone.
Download the Car Home app and make sure you install first com.android.cardock-8-2.2.apk file.
For those of you with rooted phones, flash the Google signed package from CWM recovery. This is the package I currently have installed on my phone.
The app features the Voice Search integration, allowing you to perform various tasks like calling a contact directly with a command similar to "call Alex mobile" or "listen to Michael Jackson". It also has a cool automatic mode (Day/Night) and links with your bluetooth car system.

Can anyone confirm if the Car Home starts automatically once you place the phone into Samsung Vehicle Dock kit? It should from what Google says... I'm going to get the dock, is damn sweet.
Confirmed. Use it every day!

Awesome! Can you tell me the feature you like most while driving? Can't wait to test it with a mount.
I updated the screenshots to show the shortcut created by apk...
I like that it starts the Google Music app, if you click on Music shortcut.
Here is a flashable zip. Flash in cwm. Will install apps to system folder.

Thanks for the new files. I really hate that I cannot get the app from the Market, so we get proper updates... Probably Samsung did not wanted the app because they went the VLingo way ("Hi Galaxy") and Google banned the app for all related models.
How I got the app working on my phone:
I Googled forever until I found a compatible cardock launcher file with 2.2.1.4, which for some reason everyone had it named CarHomeLauncher.apk instead of com.android.cardock-8-2.2.apk. Then, I exported both apps with the proper name and version assigned to each file.
Edit: I just found a Google signed package and link it to the first post. I flash it and everything works great.
awesome, thanks
Superb, loving it...
only question -
do you know if it is possible to add a direct dial for a contact?
I can add a contact, but when I press on that added contact I get the contact's options (message/call/email etc...)
Personally I use Voice Search option in Car Home. If I want to call Alex, I just say "Alex" and it will pop the contact. If anyone has other tricks, please share them.
Edit: Whoaa, I just tried the Voice Search feature: "call Alex mobile", it worked!
Works well with specific songs I want to listen to. I said "listen to Thriller":
This is a great app... I'm playing with the other Voice Search options as we speak.
Thanks!
Installed and working perfectly on Epic 4G Touch (SGX2). Thank very much!
So lame that they block us from installing it from the Market. I wonder if it's because of the car-centric crapware that gets bundled on our phone...

Yuck nasty suction mount.
Look up a Brodit Active cradle for the GS2. use inconjunction with the specific pro-clip designed for your car.
You'll never look at another brand of car mount again.
I own a Nokia CK-300 car kit, it connects through the car speakers, mute's them on phone call, connects through bluetooth and streams music through a2dp perfectly. Has a small microphone usually placed close to the driver's head. Also has a small remote control, useless with this phone (voice commands!!)
Will this app work with this car kit? I wonder if Google Car Home will accept commands through BT connection......

I don't think Google Car Home is what you think it is. All it is is essentially just a launcher with big icons which are easy to see while driving. It also allows auto-launching when it detects connection to any bluetooth device.
Any voice-activated programs are a totally separate thing.
I mean, will Google Car Home accept voice commands passing through BT connection?

Google Car Home has nothing to do with voice commands!
If you are talking about Google Voice Search, then no, I haven't found a way to get this to work through a bluetooth microphone. Would be cool, though. In any case, this is off topic and is probably discussed elsewhere.

Using the Galaxy Nexus as a home theater/desktop PC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_--zcmqIyRI
Not thinking "ground breaking" or anything, but very nice stuff none the less.
I had an Atrix 4G with the Lapdock accessory (+webtop mod) before the GNEX, so using my android phone as my computer is something i'm familiar with, even though it was in a different way.
I also have the Rii mini bluetooth keyboard and tried once with the Nexus connected to my TV. Just that one time because I received the MHL adapter very recently.

Any other Nexus owners here using their phone as a desktop PC/HTPC/entertainment center?
Any recommended full sized bluetooth keyboard+touchpad?
Thanks
I just use a Bluetooth mouse and a cheap bt thumb keyboard off eBay with a good layout for direction keys. I don't have an MHL adapter yet but it should work. I think your issue is your keyboard\mouse combo may be too complicated without some software.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - CM9 AOKP
Asus Transformer - Revolver
Something else I've tried is installing ubuntu in a chroot, accessing it through VNC, and using bluetooth mouse+keyboard with MHL output. Results are shaky at best. VNC is the bottleneck - none of the VNC clients I've tried really work perfectly.
Some typical issues:
- Double-clicking doesn't work
- Keys are not always mapped properly. Escape, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, for example.
- Audio doesn't work at all.
- Because it's through VNC, graphics are not hardware accelerated.
The efficiency of using a full linux install with a keyboard is lost when the keyboard doesn't function as expected.
Looks promising. I would like to see desktop programs like spreadsheets, real time financial apps, or maybe sending something to the printer.
I did. No add ons. Everything was from the GN and the MHL adapter with the back cover off.

I dont plan on using mine as a desktop computer but for my galaxy tab 10.1 I have this bluetooth keyboard from logitech that sync'd perfectly and works well with the nexus also.
It is, I would say, about the size of a laptop keyboard so you can get a good rhythm going once you get comfortable with the keys and the size of the keyboard.
As for mouse, I have no idea. I have this cheap one from that is bluetooth form logitech also but I dont like using it. But in a pinch its better than nothing.
Where did you purchase the serioux keyboard?
I bought the serious from a local store (I found it by chance .. I was not looking for it on purpose). I see that lots of online stores here in Romania have this keyboard in stock ....
If you want to make an idea about the size, compared with a full sized keyboard....
// sent from my green robot //
I have a google t.v. Keyboard Which I thought would work but its not discoverable by default so I will have to buy a bt keyboard and mouse. MHL is nice though its great that this can be done.
I have been using this setup off an on for a few weeks now. I actually had an Apple keyboard and mouse sitting around the house and they paired with the device perfectly.
I also did the Ubuntu install and you are absolutely right... VNC is the bottle neck and it makes everything unusable.
While its fun to toy around with, it is still too clunky of a setup for me to make it my permanent laptop replacement. If I could get the output on the monitor to be a tablet layout instead of a close up of the phone screen, it may be a different story.
My GN has basically become my multimedia hub/ desktop. I used the Samsung mhl adapter to avoid some problems I heard about with other adapters. I use the Logitech bt Android 3.0+ keyboard mouse combo. Got these on Amazon.
On my TV I use Gmail, Calendar, GDocs, Netflix, Music, Weather, Market Movies, etc... I love it.
And even use Google Video Chat off the back camera using the keyboard case stand!

[Q] Car dock app. Where is it?

So we've all seen the car dock accessories but I don't have the car dock but still want to turn my Nexus into the car dock mode when I'm driving.
Does anyone know of any official Galaxy Nexus car dock app floating around. If not, is there any good ICS 3rd party car dock around?

unfortunately google is blocking carhome on the galaxy nexus throught the market, which is dumb because the app works fine.
all you need to do is use the same workaround that was discovered for installing google wallet. the only hitch is the app won't show up in your launcher. i used an app called anycut to create one but since the app hasnt been updated in a while the icon will be kind of cut off. still works fine though.
Well that sucks. I am not sure I can be bothered with a workaround that is still hassle to use, if I'm perfectly honest.
I've gone to the market and picked up a pretty decent car home dock that has a 30 day trial. Seems pretty decent so I'll probably buy the full version.
Sometimes I wonder why Google makes the decisions it does about apps.
I use the gapps from stock 4.0.4 posted here and it has car home on it.

You can just install the APKs through a file manager. I did this installing the Car Home and Car dock APKs witch I have attached. Sorry I forget what forum I found this on, but it does work. Not sure if it will work non-rooted, but you can give it a try. You don't have to side lode or drop this in the system/apps directory, just install it like any regular APK.

[Q] Air gesture to change music track?

I thought the air gesture feature would be really useful to skip music tracks while riding my motorcycle, but I can't get it to work! I'm using the stock music player, loaded a bunch of songs on the SD card and I turned on the air gesture settings. I can get it to skip tracks by saying "next" using the voice command feature, but this probably won't help much in a full face helmet at 70mph!
What I would like to be able to do is have the phone in the transparent pocket of my tank bag and be able to wave my gloved hand over the sensor to skip a track. In theory it should be possible as long as my hand is within 7cm of the screen, according to Samsung. I tried it out just sitting in front of my computer, and no matter how I wave my hand (and believe me, I've tried all sorts of combinations: fast, slow, closer & further from the screen), I can't get the music to skip a track. Any ideas?
My phone is stock, unrooted, if that helps. I do have a Spigen GLAS.t screen protector on there, but it doesn't cover any of the sensors.
Are you sure you click on air gesture and then air browse and selected music

I believe it only works with the stock music player as well. That sucks. Tried it in poweamp and didn't work.

Is there a specific apk in the /system/app directory for the air gesture feature? I can probably edit it to send a media next broadcast instead of being hard coded to the stock player.

+100 to that
Thankyou elflip88... I didn't have it set to change on the lock screen. Now at least that is working! I don't think that solves my problem of changing tracks when the screen is completely off though. Is there a way to make the phone wake up enough to get to the lock screen with a hand gesture? I have it set to where it shows the time and notifications when you reach for it, but I can't change tracks from that screen.

Apparently, the built-in air gesture only works for the stock media player and only when the phone is awake. You should install "wave control". You can set the media player it works with and switch songs with the screen off. I have used it while driving a moving truck and it works very well. :good:

I do have a Spigen GLAS.t screen protector on there, but it doesn't cover any of the sensors.

you all can try Hovering Controls, it emulates Air gesture for all phones (Android 2.2 and up) and works mostly with all music/video players, even with screen off.
you can find it here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.golgorz.hoveringcontrols (for support, Google Play)
and here:

For me wave control did not work. I tried it with pandora (which it says it should work) but every time i tried the gestures it would launch the default music app. I know exactly whats wrong with it but im gonna dig up the Air Gestuers API and make my own instead of editing the smali.
