[Q] n00b trying to nandoid - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

hi xda
first post, 2 week old first android phone (galaxy s GT-I9000).
I've just rooted my phone using super one click. im always reading that i HAVE to perform a nandroid backup before i do ANYTHING after i've rooted my device.
When i google "how to nandroid", i just get "get into recovery mode, select 'nandroid backup'.
But there isn't any back up options, only the standard 4 options: reboot, apply update, wipe data/facotry reset and wipe cache.
2 questions:
1) what must i do after rooting to make the nandroid option available? Surely doing THAT is doing something, therefore putting my phone at risk?
and thus,
2) what can i exactly do after rooting, before performing a nandroid? one click lag fix? normal use? installing a ROM? My understanding is that the nandroid backup is in case installing a ROM goes wrong, but then again a lot of the 'how tos' say you should instal clockworkmod, or rom manager before making a nandroid.
Please shed light.

You need a custom recovery like cwm installed to do a backup and for flashing ROMs. Whether you choose to do so is up to you, but there are advantages to being rooted either way i.e Apps that require root access to work.

thanks for your reply - please clear something up for me...
Everything i read says do a nandroid before you flash anything, but then it sounds like you have to flash a recovery ROM in order to do a nandroid?
Please let me know
1) how to install cwm recovery ROM and
2) what can go wrong? (since i'm doing this before making a nandroid)
3) can i install the recovery ROM before i root?

okay
at the moment i've got this far:
rooted? check. (super1click)
rom manager installed? check.
problem:
when i click flash clockworkrecovery ROM in ROM manager, it prompts me to choose my model (Galaxy I9000 International). Then it prompts me to allow poweruser functions, which i do. Then it saus something to the effect of "ClockworkRecovery ROM has been downloaded!"
note: not flashed, or installed, downloaded.
That finished the 'flashing' process. Now, if i select back up, it boots into recovery mode, but its still running the stock android recovery (2e), without any option to perform a nandroid backup!
How the hell do i do this? aargh.
help would be apprciated.

Go back into Rom Manager and again select install CWM and then backup current ROM. (sometimes it just needs doing again).
While you are using a stock ROM the stock Recovery will reassert itself on every boot, so having to flash CWM multiple times is not uncommon. Of course, this behaviour stops if you flash a custom ROM.

I've flashed it 3 times.. still no cwm recovery Rom... how many timed should I do this before trying something else, and what is that something else?

Just flashed another 3 times. Still nothing... please help!

THIS is the correct section for your device. I'm sure you'll find the answers you need there.
Good luck.

Recovery ROM

Sorry for the noob question, what are the recovery roms for? Wouldn't you just need a stock to revert to if you messed up the phone royally? Also, where can you find them? I haven't seen the aman-ra anywhere, though people regularly refer to it.
Also, do all of the ROMs listed on the wiki work with 1.47? It doesn't mention the version.

A recovery ROM is what you use to manage full ROMs, you can backup, restore, wipe, mount as USB, all outside of the ROM loaded. These functionalities aren't available from within the system itself.
It's kind of like an advanced BIOS. You can't make a full backup of Windows XP while your IN Windows XP. (ASFAIK)
Edit : Amons recovery is included in all the full root method tutorials. It's called recovery.img
So, the recovery is more of a utility than just a backup. Usually you flash what is called the recovery partition with a recovery image. Once you do that, you don't need a computer to get into recovery. Anyway, the recovery does alia you to do a backup and restore, but it is actually the utility that you flash roms with. It also let's you wipe cache and stuff which is critical to flashing your own Rom.
You would use recovery to restore, instead of flashing stock, because it would return your phone to the exact state it was in when you did the backup. You don't lose any settings or apps or anything.
When you root via toast pt 2 you wind up flashing amon recovery. There is also a thread in the dev section with a different version I think, just search amon.
And most roms on the wiki have the newest ota integrated in the Rom, but you should always consult the first post in the roms thread to see more about that.

[Q] Rooted and can not Flash A Recovery

I am rooted through Unrevoked 3.21 as of today, I insalled ROM Manager from the Market and I am trying to Flash A ClockworkMod Recovery so I can do a nandroid backup. However when I click t o flash recovery and select my phone a message pops us saying an "error occurred while flashing your recovery" any suggestions or help please. Looking to install some custom roms and kernels but I want to make sure I can recover.
Thanks in advance
Anyone have an idea?
Uninstall, reinstall, reboot
This is the absolute easiest way... works when just about everything else fails...
let me know if it worked for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764062&highlight=forever
And actually, this will give you AMON recovery... but that is way better anyway. You can NAND backup from there... and you will actually have wipes that are complete.
Follow the directions for applying the OTA update, but skip the OTA flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790394
BTW you can hold up either leg with one foot one the ground...but you cannot hold up both... You can't flash a recovery from a recovery... (it would over-write itself and execution would resume at some random coincidental opcode).
someone in the development section said this was possible... he explained that he flashed clockwork while already in amon recovery. said he was able to make a nandroid backup thorugh the clockwork recovery then when he rebooted he was still on amon's recovery. i thought it was pretty cool.
i am sorry but i cannot remember who it was that said it.

[Q] Clockwork Recovery Question On Stock Rom

Hey, this may seem like a silly question but i would rather ask it than brick my device.
I have rooted and s-off my stock rom, i have installed all my apps and settings and ive got it just the way i like it. i have created a nandroid backup using clockwork mod.
I now want to try Gingervillian rom, ive got titanium backup to install all the apps back and that but what i want to know is:
Will i be able to restore my stock rom from the nandroid backup with all my apps and setting in tact, even though s-off is set and its rooted. i know a read somewhere that flashing a stock rom on a phone with s-off can semi-brick it... so will clockwork recovery do the same?
When you make a 'nandroid' backup via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, it makes essentially a carbon copy of the current setup of your ROM (not your radio, S-Off status, etc.). Literally everything is perfectly as you have it now. It just like doing a full HDD backup of your computer.
When you restore this backup, it simply brings back your ROM from exactly how it was. There is no effect on your root or S-off, or your radio.
So, if you do a nandroid backup, then wipe the device and flash another ROM i.e. Gingervillain, and make a nandroid of that, you can then freely switch back and forth between the 2 (or more) recoveries via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, with no issues.
The issues with bricking as you're referring to are if you for some reason try to somehow flash a non-rooted ROM, which would most definitely cause issues. In order to get back your phone to stock-stock-stock-stock (unroot and S-on), you will need to follow unroot instructions and flash an official unrooted RUU/PC10IMG.zip to get back to everything as it came out of the box.
Hope this helps, let me know if I need to clarify.
thank you very much matey much appreciated!!

Upgrading to GB on the DInc

Hey guys, so I'm a noob and need a little bit of help. I just downloaded this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219407
Now, what do I do with it? Also, will I lose all of my data by flashing this onto my phone? (ie: my texts and my homescreens, etc?)
Thanks!
are you rooted? if not...

once you have clockwork recovery and all that, boot into recovery, 'flash rom from sd card' (after putting the zip file on ur sd) and ur good.
If you dont want to lose everything, after root, download titanium backup and run that. you will be able to apply most of your stuff back on once you flash a new rom.
howbout some thnx -.-'
I'll give you some thanks for that succinct explanation of steps to take.
I'm ready to root with unrevoked - guessing I should use the "flash and recover" version instead of their "forever" one?
I installed Titanium backup, which I'll use after rooting to backup pretty much everything that it can grab.
Then, I'll use the SD card-based install that you mentioned.
I've read that I should do a full wipe before installing the OTA ROMs being offered - is another tool needed for that, please?
- ooofest
You've got it. The newest version of Unrevoked has made the "forever" one obsolete.
You will be able to perform all the wipes required from within Clockwork Recovery.
Also, make a clockwork backup (nandroid) as soon as you have root, so if you run into any problems flashing roms you have something to restore.

[Q] 4.4.4 rooted with TWRP and S-Off but still on stock ROM

I am very new to rooting etc, but managed to root my HTC One M8 Developer Edition 4.4.4 and flash TWRP Recovery with the help of the guides in this forum. Also got S-off with Sunshine. I have not installed any custom ROM and still have stock
My question is - will I still receive OTA's (if and when HTC releases lollipop for the Developer Edition?
You can't take an OTA with a non-stock recovery. It will download, but not install.
Root, on the other hand, hasn't typically caused a problem. (though you almost invariably lose root in the process)
Being S-OFF and actually already being Dev edition all you need is to have a stock backup the way it is before you flash a ROM and when the time comes just wipe from whatever ROM you've chosen and restore the backup along with flash your stock recovery.
Or if you want less steps just download the bone stock no root, stock recovery RUU and rename it to "0P6BIMG.zip" and place it in the root of your external sdcard.
Boot into hboot and when it asks what you want to do just press up ,give it plenty of time to flash and when it finishes just reboot and it will be stock just the way it came out of the box only it will still be bootlooader unlocked and S-OFF
Thanks
Thanks jball and jshamlet
You bet

OK. I have gone through several guides and posts but am still confused. I had installed TWRP recovery and before rooting had taken a backup of apps, data and system. After rooting I have downloaded several paid apps including Titanium Backup. If I restore from the backup that I had made, these apps will not be available right?. Also I have paid apps running off my SD Card. These would not have been included in the backup and also might not be available?
Is there anyway of flashing stock recovery alone. WIll be grateful for any guidance or link to other posts.
Thanks & Regards

After flashing a ROM I do the out of box setup and allow Google to restore what apps I normally use,I haven't used titanium backup sense my S2 days cause it's a tossup that it even works right at any given time in my opinion.
As far as recovery goes
Download and install "Flashify" from the playstore and find the stock
recovery.img file.
After installing Flashify go ahead and open the app, give root permission and choose recovery image, now choose file and navigate with whatever root explorer you use and choose the stock recovery.img you downloaded and tap "yup" and it will flash it for you.

Flashing a recovery in fastboot or with Flashify will do just that: flash a recovery to the recovery partition. Nothing else changes.
Root lives on /system. So as long as you don't flash a non-rooted stock rom you will keep root.
Your paid apps are yours. If you wipe them you can just reinstall them from the PS. If you paid for a root app like TiBu and you don't have root anymore, you still own it but it's not very useful...
You have apps on your external SD??? That is so ICS - don't know if they have libs or app data stored on internal anyway, but let's say you nandroid your current installation, take out your SD card, then wipe everything and install new firmware, recovery and rom. You should still be able to restore just your data partition from the nandroid, re-insert your SD and be good as gold.
As long as your new rom can live with the restored /data that is....
But seriously: Move data to external and install apps to internal - so much easier to manage....
Oh, and once S-off you're always S-off unless you run the code to S-on again. Not even flashing RUU will turn you S-on automatically.
