ndCheap Vehicle Mount for Otterbox Defender Users - Atrix 4G Accessories

Everyone knows by now that the Atrix mounts do not work with most cases, especially with the Otterbox Defender case since it is rather large. In my quest for a car windshield mount I happened to come across an extra mount for my garmin Nuvi GPS that I had sitting around. After checking out the size I realized it could easily be modified to be used with the Atrix Otterbox Defender case.

What you need:
Motorola Atrix Otterbox Defender Case
Garmin Nuvi windshield mount (cheap on ebay) http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=garmin+nuvi+mount&_sacat=See-All-Categories
"Compatible Models: Garmin NUVI 200, 200W, 205, 205W, 250, 250W, 255, 255W, 260, 260W, 265T, 265WT, 270, 275T. "
Thin Foam padding (I used some I had left over from an Air conditioner installation)
Scissors
Dremel & #420 Cutoff wheel
All you need to do is trim the bottom and top "tabs" for the Garmin mount with your dremel cutoff wheel. While I didn't do the cleanest job, I'm sure you can make it look nicer if you care to. Use the plastic indentations on the Defender case to determine how much to cut off of the Garmin mount.
You will want to start your cuts to the left side of the original Garmin "tab", The reason for this is that you want the phone to sit the furthest to the right hand side as you can get it, so that the flap for the usb power cord plugin can open without hitting anything. By starting to the left side you will have ample room.
After you do the cuts if you test fit your phone in the modified cradle you will notice that there is a bit of side to side play, and if you shake the crap out of it the phone will fall off of the mount. To remedy this situation and put tension onto the new mounts I used my scissors and cut (2) very thin pieces of sticky-backed foam. I had some sitting around from a air conditioner installation, but you should be able to get it anywhere those types of things are sold. Stick them onto the backing as in the photo above and you are done.
That's it. You now have a nice cheap dock for your Otterbox Defender-equipped Atrix.
Enjoy.

Great mod! I've been looking for something like this since I got my otterbox.
I had been toying with the idea of trying to get a hold of an additional belt clip and modding that with a suction cup mount but they aren't available separate from the case.
It's great to see a simple solution that is readily available and inexpensive to boot.
Thanks for sharing!

Glad I could help, I was in the same predicament. This works great and for cheap. Those mounts sell on ebay for like 4-6 bux or cheaper.

There's no need to trim if you already have the belt clip that comes with the defender case, the Garmin Nuvi holder will just clip right to the belt clip...

Wow. Necropost! Great first post.

(Custom) Window Seat for Evo

Back in the day (2yrs ago) I used the product from Griffin called the “window seat” for my Itouch and I loved it. It never fell, The support was firm meaning when I hit bumps (potholes and the occasional prostitute) the device wouldn’t move but I could easily move it with my hand. so here’s my idea, I am going to get another Window seat (comes with the mount kit/arms an Itouch bracket and an iphone bracket) and cut the mount case for the iphone so that just the back connector is left (basically cutting the case part off). Then I will gorilla glue the bracket to a chepo hard evo case which will serve as my new mount, best of all I can Qik my drives with it being mounted in the window (makes me feel like a celebrity…Now where’s my Bentley?)
My question to you: What hard case would be your first choice? (Think cheap and durable and has to be hard plastic)
Edit: saw this in the other custom mount thread and i think i will take his advice and go with the case from handhelditems.com
Here is a pic of the windows seat so you can get an idea of how it will work.

Great idea... I need something like this for my Evo to sit in my pop up nav compartment.. Any places that sell this Griffin product on the cheap?
I like your thinking on this. My dashboard, however is not a perfectly smooth surface (2000 Honda Civic), would this thing stick?

probably not if its a soft surface, that's why i stick it to the windshield and hang it right below my rear view, my dash wouldn't allow it to stick lol

A very nice case by the Swiss Army Knife people

I just picked up a case from Walmart for $16 that is made by SwissGear (aka Wenger) that comes with a lifetime warranty. It has a zippered enclosure for the tablet and a zippered front pouch. The Archos 101 fits very nicely in it and if you have a very thin keyboard, that fits in there too, but its pretty snug in this case. I have the Apple mini bluetooth keyboard. There is about an inch on top, but length wise it fits perfectly. So it won't really slide around.
The UPC is 092837762329 and the part number is GA-7623-02.
The computer/tablet pocket is 10.5" L x 1.25" W x 7.75" H
The exterior size is 12" L x 1.5" W x 9" H
Anyway, just thought you all might like another good option.
I got the same case for Christmas. I used the foam insert to make two perfectly sized spacers to put in the bottom of the case, so the 101 fits perfectly.
Pics please?
Yes,pics plz
http://www.walmart.com/ip/SwissGear-Lunar-10.2-Sleeve-Black/14964986
That has pics for those of you wanting them.
To hijack the thread for a brief sec, I did something similar with the foam insert of a netbook case. Target was selling (is selling?) a hard honeycomb style 10" netbook case that is obviously slightly too thick and tall, so I cut the styrofoam packing that was inside, glued each one to hard cardboard, and covered them in felt. Now the top has one half felted up and the bottom has the other; end result is a hard case i can throw in a backpack or toss around the house and the tablet is hugged in cushiony feltness. For $18 bucks and some time it beat paying some of the prices for the flimsy cases designed for the archos that are out there now - although the $25 folio case floating around ebay is tempting.
In case anyone is still interested, here's the pics of my "mod" to the Swiss Army Knife case to fit the Archos 101.
Note: the foam was inside the case when I bought it.
First, I laid the tablet on the foam aligned with the top of it drew a line across the foam using the bottom of the Archos as a guide. I then cut out the piece and duplicated it.

See how the 2 pieces of foam will fill up the extra inch or two at the bottom of the case.
Shove the foam pieces into the bottom of the case and it now fits like a glove.

[Q] Car kit for use with Ballistic case

Hi all,
I have my Evo in a red/black Ballistic HC case and I need a new mounting solution. Was previously using the soundgate M2 but its rather difficult to attach/detach the phone and the plastic disk does not adhere easily to the rubber backing of the Ballistic case. More or less I'm wondering does anyone have a case similar to this one? This would be ideal because I travel alot and could take this with me for use in rental cars. The problem is, I'm not sure it will fit with the Basllistic case on. I know there are alot of other Ballistic owners on here, what are you guys using for car kits? Thanks

thanks, ordered.
theres a guy on ebay that does custom mounts for phones with cases, search Slipgrip Evo or Slipgrip ballistic evo. Ordered one for my innocase II and it worked great, ballistic one coming in the mail
What about just putting the disk on the hard case and covering it with the silicone part, and then pulling the silicone layer off when you get in the car? Free solution.
Here's kind of a DIY solution I came up with for mounting my Ballistic case in the car.
First, I tried this but the phone would fall off quite easily:
http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-Retail-Packaged-Universal-Magnetic/dp/B000KNLG3M?tag=5336653508-20
So, I was at Harbor Freight Tools today when I ran across this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/magnetic-ring-65535.html
So, I bought a couple and here is what I came up with:
First, I broke the eye loop off of it:

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Then I put some 3M double sided tape on it:
Then I went out and stuck it on my dash:
I already had this metal disk stuck on the back of my case from the other magnet mount I had tried. It works great on the back of the hard case and you can't even tell it's there with the silicone cover over it.
Here is the case on the mount. It holds VERY securely, it is NOT going to fall off. (had to take my phone out of the case to take the pics)
First just the hard case:
With the silicone cover on:

I use am Arkon universal car dock. Cost 15 bucks and I've been very happy. Very sturdy
Vibrates in my car bad cause my car vibrates bad but I have it sitting so low I have a shop towel as a damper. I'm sure in a modern car made in the past 20 years wouldnt vibrate. It does block the camera but it holds tight enough to where you can shift it so it wont block. It wont hold as well but it's good enough on my old car so I'm sure it'll be fine for everyone else

MountGuys Car Dash Tab Holder

I've just ordered this: http://www.mountguys.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TAB178
Anyone tried it? Once I get it I'm shure to make a review
Shipping to Norway is slooow, so it will take a while
I'd be very interested to see how you like this product once you get it. Specifically, I'd like to know the range of motion the mount has and how well it sticks to the dash, since tab + case can be pretty heavy. Oh, and whether we can access the charging port, buttons, etc.
Thanks, guinea pig
I really don't like those window mounts becouse they block too much of the view. Plus that I got my phone holder sucked to the window already.
I'm not so confident that glue or whatever really does hold up, at least not with my leather case on. It does add some weight.. But I shure will let you guys know how it does
i would love to hear your review of this product. thanks for taking the time to post.
The case came fast considering it shipped halfway across the u.s. in three days from start to my door.
Pros:
Fits the tab well,
built like the mount I'll last
The spring is tensioned enough to hold the tab but not tight enough to be squeezing the tab to death
The sticky mount when put on the right surface holds really well.
Cons:
The grips that hold the tab have to be off set so the top grips don't press on the volume buttons. (This only matters if your ocd and want the grips to be centered xD

The suction cup works amazing IF set in the right surface. My dash is fairly flat but pretty curved and the mount doesn't hold, it feels like its stuck then you stick the tab in and start driving and it randomly lets go a minute or so later. If your dash has a flat surface then don't worry it grips amazing if the surface is flat.
They say it wont leave a mark (residue) but it slightly does. I have two cars, one with a black dash and one with a beige dash. The beige dash has a slight round spot from the pad.
When the tab is mounted it wiggles really easily. Not because its a bad design but its just because its adjustable and adjustable things wiggle when a heavy tab is stuck on it. It stays in a set position but if you tap it, it wiggles.
Seems like there are more cons then pros, but don't be discouraged. For $30 you cant get much better if a dash mount. I love the design and would definitely get another just because the cons are more of miniscule and you won't get rid of them without paying more than this mount is.
Overall I'm impressed
Well worth the $30

One of those Universal Magnetic Car Mount with our ZF2

Hi all...
I've been using this phone for long time but never successfully found a good car mount. I don't want suction cup style, nor air vent clip. I am thinking of getting one of those magnetic ones. I heard comments about strong magnet interferes the screen on/off. But my main concern is the design of our phone. Our ZF2 has curved back. But this magnetic mount required to have best performance on regular phone with flat back.
I would like comment from those who used this kind of magnetic mount.
TIA
I have the aukey one. I bent the metal plate and can fit it behind the stock back cover.
It's the best set up.
No extra bulge. No case.
Jump in car.
Put on magnet. Holds tight.
Doesn't affect GPS or reception.

I use this and work very good
http://pt.aliexpress.com/item/With-..._9&btsid=2e3ff2bf-60e4-47c5-a102-e512c8d66999
No problem with back curve of our zenfone 2. Strong and effective. But with no case. If i try to put magnet inside the case the strong isnt enough. I hold but fall down when you grab a hola in the street
I use with a case and the magnet in back of case. Very nice
P.S - Doesent affect anything in screen or coverage. Double tap work as it should
I had one of this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/MEMTEQ-Univ...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I was very sceptic in the beginning, but it worked nicely, no problem with the curved back. However when I wanted to use it with a cover as well, it didn't hold any more. At that point I replaced the piece of metal provided in the packet with a larger metal piece which I stick in between the case and the back, and that way I got it holding with, but not perfectly.
Conclusion, only buy magnet holder if you are using your ZF without any flipcover or anything else.
Thx! Is yours ball joint standard 17mm one? The thing is... before I could wait someone to feedback here, I decided to purchase the Arkon ones (non magnetic mount) that has a standard 17mm ball join on a AMPS plate (as shown below) that stick with on my existing mount.
