I'm wondering what is the optimal encoding specs that would work on the Desire Z?
I have the Rebuild of Evangelion 2.22 on video, but it's in 1080p and it's 6gigs in size. I'm wondering what's the best specs for me to run the video file on my desire z smoothly.
I'm looking at size, bitrate, encoder, and audio specs.
Convert to avi and install either vplayer or rockplayer. No extra bs needed with apps like that.

Like I said you don't need to do anything besides convert to avi. I play bluray rips of very larg size and works fine. When I first started adding videos I was asking the same question you are. Use one of those 2 players.
Or you could google your question and find other answers way faster than waiting for responses here
Why do you want to use mp4? Rockplayer and vplayer play tons more codecs. Less compression=better video/audio

I use MP4 because it is 90% more reliable than other codecs out there and the quality to compression ratio is pretty good. I would like to be able to fit a feature length movie in the small 8gb card I have on my phone (4gigs available atm)
And i have already searched google, nothing really came up. maybe i'm using the wrong keywords, but there was nothing that mentioned resolution, bitrate, etc.
besides, watching 1080p on such a small screen doesn't make it look any better as opposed to it being watched in 720p or so since it's so small.
I've had the best results by using Handbrake and converting the video to mp4 (ffmpeg) format and resizing it to the Z's native resolution. Settings are pretty much default with around 1500kbps (could be too much depending on the source).
sounds good. I'm probably going to leave it at 720p for safety's sake, but I'll re-encode the file to 640x480 for comparison.
I find that I get better video quality results using SUPER than I do with Handbrake, I'm sure it's just a settings thing since they both use the same tools under the hood.
Was searching for a guide as well, from this article, Desire Z has been known to support h264 with baseline profile at level 3

You could try rockplayer (http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2010/06/rockplayer_media_player_beta_for_android.html ) but i have not tested it myself since my phone is at htc service centre
edit: if you want to convert them, I use badaboom (uses my nvidia gpu so goes fast, although it s not able to convert to the maximum resolution of the phone) or handbrake (which uses cpu)

Rockplayer is indeed a great AVI player but I have found a few files it plays slow or stutters on, as it's only beta at the moment I'm looking forward to the full release - in the meantime it's a great app to have.
+1, I've also been using rock player for the last couple of weeks and have had no problems with any dvd quality files. I still use mvideoplayer for x264 stuff though as its better for that and the GUI on rock player is poor - visibility is an issue quite often as it's status bar overlay is transparent with a bit of white meaning you often can't see the timecode on bright images.

hm? gpu converter? I havent seen or tried one yet.
EncodeHD is pretty simple but uses cpu power. http://dcunningham.net/media-tools/encodehd/
I pretty much recommend it if you want 1:1 and dont like messing around with resolutions and compressions.
Badaboom says my system is not compatible. But I got an 8800GT and windows 7. That should be compatible!!!
I did try badaboom now and I'm disapointed actually. It slower then EncodeHD when run from a quad 9300 3GHZ. There doesnt seem to be a way to keep the original resolution either. I mean whats the point to encode to 640x480 or even 800x400 when the original files are only 624x352.
i'm running it on windows 7 x64 with 8600m gt and works like a charm. (for those of you with ati cards there is ati avivo but i have no experience with how it works) @balos no wonder that a cpu based encoder is faster with a 3ghz quad core (i'm only on a dualcore 1.8 ghz). And badaboom not seeing your system as compatible do you have latest drivers installed?
I got it working but it only converts with a disappointing 170fps. When I pick a bigger resolution it even drops to 140fps.
With xmedia encode I can reach 200fps on HTC Desire profile and original resolution of the chosen .avi. On Ipod profile which i used with badaboom where I got 170fps. I can go up to 220fps with other cpu based encoders.
I would recommend Badaboom and similar gpu based converters only when you have a weak cpu or when you need your cpu resources freed for other things.
I'm gonna stick with EncodeHD and Xmedia. Both are free converters and since my cpu is stronger then my gpu and I dont use my computer when I do the converting its the better choice.
Well its true that we got an .avi player now with rock player which even plays them smooth. But .avi format uses about 20% more cpu power then mp4 so it should drain the battery so much faster. If thee is an power source close to where you watch your movies it doesn't really matter.

I use Danuisoft Convereter to Convert , but you can use any converter. You just need to make sure that it is set to
Resolutions : 800 x480
Container: MP4
Video Codec H264
Frame rate 29.4
I set my audio codec to AAc or MP3, but thats up to you.
You can choose h264 is the only codec that show thumbnails currently.
If you jhave any questions let me know.
i hope you only converting HDs with that setting because on the usual .avi it would be a waste.

I have made multiple tests and these settings are best for HD and SD content .avi included.
What exactly do you mean? Usually tv shows are in 624x352 24fps. 1000kbps
How could you gain anything from using a higher resolution, more fps and bigger bitrate. Makes no sense. The only thing you will get is streach your avarage 350MB file to 500Mb without improved quality.

Maybe things are different from you, but this works for me. If you have another reccomendation feel free to post your two cents.
no im just wondering how you get out of 24fps 30 and what a bigger resolution brings other then higher cpu usage and slower conversation time. Was always wonering why the cam or TS movie rippers dont just boost the resolution and make HD out of cam rips.
the short answer. It bring nothing. At last nothing good but if it works for you, go with it.
THE real setting for .avi if you want to keep best quality should always be.
h264
keep original fps count
keep original resolution
keep original bitrate.
you may add little sharpness filter.
Best and simpliest converter for this is EncodeHD
I'm looking for a good converter which converts .avi to .mp4. I was using this one for my Touch Diamond 2 but I think the bitrate and stuff could be higher now when I got a Desire with better specs.

I have compared different converters and I recommend Convert-tune to download and convert video and audio easily.
It converts music and movies, and also burn files on CDs. The converter is
easy to install and use.
when using Xilisoft program i had many audio/video , synchronization problems ...

Stick with that converter. It's awesome and there is no point in increasing the bitrate because the screen resolution and dimensions are the same. Increasing the bitrate will not show higher quality pictures.
AVS Video converter 6 is hands down the best converter i have used. Its not free, but its a good investment because it pretty much converts anything you throw at it. Even .mkv.
I use Handbrake on the Mac, think there is a PC version as well, works great.
+1 for Handbrake
You can pretty much just use the iPhone preset. You might need a laptop with some horsepower but it's worth using the h264 codec to reduce file size

You could just use RockPlayerBase to play the AVI instead of waiting for it to encode?
Tried using handbrake but neither Rock or the native player will recognise the m4v or mp4 file - any suggestions?

Why would you wanna use RockPlayer to watch .mp4? Just don't encode the videos.. leave them .avi or whatever, RockPlayer will play it. If you have .mp4 from beginning just use the inbuilt player.
Because I'm trying to save space and cram as many in to the memory card as I can - it's for a 6 week holiday so I want to take as much as I can. 700MB / file is un-necessarily large for a phone?
Well, I got a 32GB SD card right now and that's alooooot of movies.. I don't know what you got but converting to mp4 isn't saving so much space.
I thought a 700MB filecould be halved quite easily without any noticeable loss in quality, perhaps not? I want to take about 30 files with us, so a 16GB card or two won't be enough. We'd need 20 - 25GB of micro SD storage! With that much to carry around for an extended holiday, any saving of space would be substantial. The native player does seem to play the .avi files the files are currently stored in, however it seems a waste to keep them in their current size for such a small screen?

I know you want to get 10 posts, but try posting in newer threads, instead of resurrecting 3 year old ones.
Get mx player and play a avi movie and it starts laggings so I change the codec at top right corner to sw and the video was playing perfectly no lag.

I'm trying for a while now to convert movies to be played on my desire.Right now I am trying using handbrake.However it just won't seem to play whatever I have thrown at it.
My average convert settings are something like this:
An H.264 .mp4 file @ 2mbps bitrate with mp3 or AAC audio @128kbps,resolution 800x480 or 1280x720.
I have also tried to play each converted video with RockPlayer but nothing changes.
Bear in mind that the only size limitation for me right now is fat32's 4GB limit.I use a Kingston 16GB class 10 SD.

Strange, I've got an Avatar rip that I dl'ed and put straight onto the Desire that played with no problems, looks awesome as well. Plays through the default player or through Rockplayer as well

Can you tell me more info on the copy of Avatar that plays ok on your device?
I do it in two steps:
1. PocketDivXEncoder, just to have a "clean" AVI in 640x480.
2. SuperC, no resize (I find PocketDivXEncoder better for resizing).
Video MP4, Codec MPEG-4, 15 Fps, 768 kbps
Audio AAC-LC, 44100, 2 channels, 128 kbps
Perfect, IMO.

Thanks for the reply my friend but that's not what I'm talkin' about...I want high quality when I watch movies.Strangest thing is that I try to make my videos have the same settings that the Desire uses for the videos taken with its camera.To no avail so far!
Also,if anyone uses handbrake I think it would be a more productive thread!
I'm using AVS Video Converter now and my files works flawlessly. The settings are H.264 [email protected], 720p resolution (or native WVGA, as you like it), up to 8000kbps (without any problem for Desire) bitrate, no CABAC, MP4 ISO v2 container. Handbrake lacks some advanced settings, maybe you should try to change it.
But dude,it's a paid program,Handbrake is free,that's why I use it.I will try to find a cracked version though...

I do a H.264 @3Mbps,but I am confused with the advanced settings of it and probably that's where it all goes fuzzy!
I managed to snatch a copy of Avatar with Handbrake that plays well,but it's MPEG-4 @2Mbps(although it seems that higher would play no prob).But H.264 is better,so I want that if possible!

Following your instructions and settings pigbrother,I got a small length video(a 1080p trailer of Harry Potter 7 I downloaded from youtube),I converted it according to what settings you used with a 3250kbps bitrate and 720p and it played super smooth while having the best quality I'd ever seen on a mobile device!Then,I converted Avatar with exactly the same settings and it wouldn't play!I tried stock video player,mVideoPlayer and RockPlayer but none worked,it just said it couldn't open the file.The only thing I can think of is that there is some sort of limitation regarding the size of the file to be played(mine was 3,8GB),because the only playing copy of Avatar I got was an exactly 2GB big one I got with Handbrake.
Please guys,If you can think of something help me!

So,guys,this is interesting.I made another copy of Avatar using AVS and I used some higher profile settings(like CABAC) to make an 720p H.264 mp4 file @4Mbps and checked the option to split it in 2000MB files.Total size is about 4,8GB for 3 files and it plays like heaven!The picture of it is the absolute best I've seen until now!
So guys,there is no meaning in disabling all those advanced options as they only give better compression and quality(while making the process of conversion slower however,mine took 7:30 hours with my E8400 Intel Core2Duo).You should only put a limit to the bitrate so that the output file doesn't get bigger than 2GB.
So that's it!Now,if there is any way to make the conversion using the PCs GPU which will make it far faster I'll be happy!

Hi guys I am starting this thread because i didn't find much information regarding:
1)Video conversion softwares.
2)Best video formats for obtaining least size with highest possbile quality
3)Converting full HD videos to be able to play on defy with the best quality
4)Best players available for defy to play good quality videos smoothly.
I have started experimenting on this..
I am using total video converter for conversion and Moboplayer for playing.
Keeping Resolution 854x480 and Video bit rate 2500Kbps.
I get a file of size 55Mb .avi(H.264) after conversion of a 113Mb .mov(1080p) file.
I want you people to tell me your methods and softwares for doing this.
I hope this thread will help all people having trouble in playing HD videos on their Defy.
I will keep updating whenever I find something new and useful info.

For the Defy, my favorite video conversion software is Handbrake.
It's free and it's the best at letting me crop 4:3 format videos the way I want easilly.
- Choose the 'iPphone Legacy' format
- Uncheck 'large file size' and 'Iphone 5G support'
- Select your file name/location and resolution [make sure that keep ratio is enable];
- Choose auto or set your custom cropping
- Let it do the re-encoding; it is very fast: it keeps both my cpu cores at 100%
The Defy will basically play anything smaller or equal to its native screen resolution but most of the time, I find that 640x360 looks just fine.
What is the best container for 720p movies? I tried .mkv but Software decoding is too slow...Video is chopy but sound is good.
I made my own HD video with Defy camera (auto packed it as .3gp), and when played it was also chopy and even slower than .mkv :S

Ok, that is cool...I have MS2Ginger1.0 with 720p video shootin, but I can't change format when shootin a video...It saves it like .3gp :S

I used the handbrake part of the lifehacker guide on ripping blu-rays. http://lifehacker.com/5559007/the-hassle+free-guide-to-ripping-your-blu+ray-collection. Streamed and transcoded over Plex, it works nicely.
I just use the android tablet (on the latest version) and that generates mp4 files that play without issues on my Nexus. Dunno if there are other adjustments for even better quality video.
I may be the oddball here, but I have been finding that the N7 (with MXPlayer or VLC) will play 99% of HD files directly without conversion. There IS the issue of file space, but if your goal is the best video quality and aren't concerned about storage, then playing the original file and not transcoding it seems to be the way to go.
That said, I really can't see the difference between a 1080p and 720p encode, so I DO transcode to save space on the device. I have been using Handbrake with a 720p preset (can't remember what it is at the moment...) and they look great!
The hardware decoder works well up to H.264 high profile level 4.1. From my own tests it will start dropping frames at level 5.0.

Absolutely! MX Player with ffmpeg for decoding multi channel audio works perfect, even when streaming from OTG! :good:
I usually try to convert so that movie playback does not consume crap loads of battery.
